David Letterman signs off with epic, 33-year montage as Foo Fighters play 'Everlong'

David Letterman’s connection to Foo Fighters runs deep. As Letterman said before introducing the band during the final moments of the last Late Show with David Letterman, Foo Fighters’ “Everlong” played a part in his recovery from open heart surgery in February of 2000, and the group went out of its way to perform the track for Letterman on his first show back after the surgery. “Happily, ever since, we’ve been joined at the hip,” Letterman said during his final goodbyes.

But while Letterman and his studio audience enjoyed Foo Fighters’ stirring rendition of the 1997 song, home viewers were given an added bonus: a photo montage of Letterman through the years that included everyone from Barack Obama and Bill Clinton to Jay Leno. Watch the touching final tribute above.
