Meet The Daily Show’s New Host

11 hours ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Trevor Noah! You know Trevor Noah, the 31-year-old South African comedian who only made his first appearance on The Daily Show in December. The rumor had been going around all weekend and was confirmed by Comedy Central this morning. Noah, who speaks six languages, has been doing stand-up internationally for years, and his act tends to focus on issues of race and international relations. His first segment on The Daily Show was about America's perception of Africa, emphasizing that many American cities are in worse shape than African ones, joking, “I never thought I’d be more afraid of police in America than in South Africa.”This news comes a little less than two months after Jon Stewart's announcement he'd be leaving the show he's been hosting since 1999. For anyone following the story, it seemed Comedy Central didn't have an easy time finding a replacement. John Oliver, the correspondent most prepared to take over, »

George R.R. Martin Will Sit Out Season 6 of Game of Thrones

17 hours ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

George R.R. Martin revealed on his blog this weekend that he won't be contributing to Game of Thrones' sixth season on HBO. "Writing a season six script would cost me a month's work on Winds [of Winter], and maybe as much as six weeks, and I cannot afford that," he wrote. The author already said he was sitting out season five, which is a bummer, because he usually pens at least one episode per season. But hey, everybody kvetching about the guy's slow writing progress has finally gotten what they've wished for — no distractions. Or so it seems. It sounds like Martin's still juggling half a dozen projects, plus some appearances (which may or may not get canceled).  »

The Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver on head games and super speed in 'Ultron'

32 minutes ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

The two biggest additions to the "Avengers" ensemble in next month's "Avengers: Age Of Ultron" are Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. They play a key role in the mega-sequel, and they manage to create some interesting tensions for both the heroes and the villains in the film. Olsen was the first to sit down with us on the set, and we jumped right in, having already heard a number of things about her character from the rest of the cast. Can you talk about your Eastern European accent? (looking at the Marvel producers) Can I talk about it? We know that we're from Eastern Europe, so, okay, so, yeah, it’s something that we got to create. It's a make believe place, so it's something that Aaron and I, with the dialect coach, kind of created together.   What's the name of the fake country? That I can't talk about, but it's, »

Wilco cancels Indiana show after 'Religious Freedom' law passage

33 minutes ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

In 2010-2011, after a controversial immigration law was passed in Arizona, some musicians and sports event organizers (among others) boycotted by refusing to tour through the state in protest. The Arizona boycott reportedly cost the state $140 million in its earliest months. The "Indiana Religious Freedom Restoration Act" is showing some early signs of sparking a similar movement. Pan to Wilco's Facebook page: We are canceling our May 7 show at the Murat in Indianapolis. The “Indiana Religious Freedom Restoration Act” feels like thinly disguised legal discrimination to us. Hope to get back to the Hoosier State someday soon, when this odious measure is repealed. Refunds available at point of purchase. Connecticut is the first full and official state to jump on a nationwide movement to boycott Indiana; San Francisco was the first city. As outlets like the Washington Post point out, however, there are several other states that have similarly inacted »

Thanks to the news of Trevor Noah taking over Jon Stewart's "Daily Show" desk, we remembered something: Wow, "Daily Show" alums have basically taken over the world. If they're not landing primetime sitcom gigs, they're scoring Oscar nominations and populating romcoms. To celebrate Noah's new post, let's take a look at five Netflix picks starring the friends, colleagues, and cronies of Jon Stewart. Watch 'em now.  "Trevor Noah: African American" If you haven't been introduced to your new "Daily Show" host's brand of observational humor yet, check out his comedy special where he discusses his home country of South Africa and why racial relations there, even during the age of apartheid, are/were less complicated than in the U.S. His bit about Oprah Winfrey's leadership academy is particularly inspired. And a little unsettling! "Bruce Almighty" Oscar nominee Steve Carell wasn't always scarring you with his fake "Foxcatcher" nose and deathly "Foxcatcher" stare. »

Dennis Hopper’s Last Film Reaches $90,000 Kickstarter Goal

53 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

A Kickstarter campaign to complete Dennis Hopper’s unreleased final film has topped its $90,000 fundraising goal in three weeks.

The funds will enable director Linda Yellen to finish the comedy “The Last Film Festival,” which was halted in 2010 when Hopper died. The funds will pay for the rights to use footage from other motion pictures, edit the movie and add special effects to complete the film’s narrative.

Yellen said she plans to release the movie in May to coincide with the fifth anniversary of Hopper’s death. She explained that other investment offers would have required cutting certain scenes, altering the film’s score and changing Hopper’s voice.

“Dennis saw a rough cut of the movie before he died and loved it,” she said. “We want everyone to see the same film that Dennis and I envisioned.”

Wilmer Valderrama and Demi Lovato's Big News!

Wilmer Valderrama and Demi Lovato are taking their relationship to the next level level. While they're not engaged (yet), I can exclusively reveal that the two are going to be working on a movie together. And not just any movie—it sounds like it will be the one that will mark Valderrama's feature film directorial debut. The former That '70s Show star told me earlier today that he's close to announcing the project. "I won't be able to [shoot] it this year because this year's pretty much gone with my schedule but early next year, I'll probably be directing my first big film," Valderrama said while promoting his new indie murder thriller, The Girl Is in Trouble »

‘What’s the Deal?’ With Steven Spielberg’s Shift From DreamWorks to Warner Bros. (Video)

58 minutes ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Sneider thinks Oscar winner Steven Spielberg is the perfect choice to direct Ernie Cline‘s ode to ’80s pop culture because he understands gaming and is capable of bringing the author’s ambitious story to life. To do that, he’ll be working with state-of-the-art technology created by Magic Leap, which you can get a taste of in the accompanying videos below. Spielberg’s involvement in “Ready Player One” represents a serious time commitment that begs the question of what will happen to DreamWorks while he’s working on the Warner Bros. lot. Film Review: ‘In Her Place’

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

An urban woman arrives at a failing farm to watch and wait until an erratic teen gives birth to the child she’ll adopt in Albert Shin’s confident, acutely observed “In Her Place.” If elements of other directors come to mind — Polanski, Bergman — it’s because Canadian helmer Shin, working for the first time in his ancestral land, has co-written a script of discreet probity and quietly chilling tension, about three unnamed women whose psychological profiles are given equal, nonjudgmental weight. A healthy, award-wining fest life may presage a place on arthouse screens, though critical push will be necessary for the film to go far beyond VOD.

Viewers can’t be faulted for questioning why the characters aren’t assigned names: It’s one of the few missteps here, and while the rationale was possibly to lend the story some sort of universality, the concept is upended by the »
