We're starting our bid to find the ultimate Pokémon team. Our plan is to find out which Pokémon of each type is your favourite and then we'll whittle it down to the six essential Pokémon that everyone should have in their monster squad. We started by asking the ONM forum members to name their favourite Fire Pokémon and here are the results of the best flame war ever.
Debut appearance: Red/Blue
Charmeleon may have lost Charmander's cheery smile but it gained so much in evolution. This reptilian creature's fire burns hotter than Charmander's and it has developed sharper claws which are useful when performing a Slash Attack. Apparently Charmeleon tend to be stubborn, bad-tempered, and simply hot-headed. You couldn't tell by looking at them could you?

Debut appearance: Gold/Silver
Along with Wailord, he's one of the the least imaginatively named Pokémon in existence. So we know that it's a hound, but what else? Well, it has the most vicious dog breath ever. It has toxic flames in its belly and shoots malodorous flames from its mouth.

Debut appearance: Red/Blue
A cross between a mythical Salamander and a duck, Magmar is an awesome Pokémon who can spit powerful flames from its mouth, setting fire to its surroundings. And even though he's not fully evolved, it can use Hyper Beam and Giga Impact.
You say: Magmar is powerful, has a decent defence and isn't the slowest Pokémon. It also looks awesome. Generation 1 all the way! awesomeadam15
Debut appearance: Diamond/Pearl
This one looks like Krusty The Clown in Watford colours but we wouldn't say that to Magmortar's face. Why? This Pokémon can blast fireballs that are over 3600 farenheit from its massive cannon arms.

Debut appearance: Red/Blue
Pokémon's own phoenix from the flames, this legendary bird creates a brilliant flash of flames when it flaps its wings. As a dual fire/flying type, it also knows the powerful move Sky Attack. However, we reckon its finest moment was popping out of a ball in Smash Bros. Brawl to flame its opponents.

Debut appearance: Diamond/Pearl
Two words. Magma Storm. As the only Pokémon who actually knows this move, Heatran is pretty special. He's like Johann Cruyff before everyone nicked his turn. This move traps the target in pillars of fire for 2.5 turns and inflicts damage at the end of each turn. And, you've got a Grip Claw, the duration of Magma Storm is five turns. Not bad for a tortoise.

Debut appearance: Red/Blue
Look at the picture. Unlike Charmeleon, Arcanine lost none of its good looks when evolving from Growlithe. This legendary Pokémon may have the mane of a lion and the stripes of a tiger but it has the speed of a panther. It is one of a few Pokémon that knows ExtremeSpeed.
With the exception of one or two, They are all legendaries and starters. :S
No Typhlosion?
Not a personal favourite of mine, but I would've bet on it being in the top 10.
Charizard is a definite #1
I'd put houndoom further up the list just for his pokedex entry that says a burn from his flame will never stop hurting.

HAHA! I doubt that. He's not the best pokemon in terms of fighting with, but he's cool! LOL! I don't think it's much about how good he is, but how popular he is.
its typhlosion for me cause it is the first pokemon i got to lvl 100 without cheating. oh and it friggin awesome. by the way guy who says groudon is not technically a fire pokemon that does actually mean that it is not a fire pokemon altogether.
Where's Typhlosion? Out of the list, I'd say Charizard, it just pwns. xD
For battling, I'd say Arcanine or Heatran though.

I can't believe that Typhlosion didn't make the list! Typhlosion is my absolute favourite Fire mon and probably my favourite mon out of all of them.
Charizard is my second favourite with Blaziken rivalling him for second spot.

Yeah, my favourite fire type pokemon are just the same, but with typhlosion on instead of charmeleon.

but, anyway i probably would not say charizard is the best because it is flying type and that sorts of let it down so for me i would of probably put either typhlosion or obviously Ho-oH 1st but charizard is still good but i would of said something like 5th.

My personal fave is Entei just for his appearance. Charizard and Arcanine also get podiums places!

Why on Earth is Infernape ranked so high? It's ugly and lacks charisma. Charmander should be there instead!

Unfortunately there are hardly any fire types which is why I suppose most of the ones on the list are starters or legendaries.
Because it deals damage on the switch in taking into account weaknesses and resistances? Meaning a pokemon that is both fire and flying will receive 4x the SR damage than a normal, meaning every time Charizard switches in it loses 50% of it's health? Perhaps because gen IV is HUGELY Stealth Rock dominated meaning Charizard NEVER gets a safe switch in? Also because Charizard works best on offense without access to healing and maybe, infact, holding a LO that keeps draining it's health anyway?
Whichever way you cut it, SR = Charizard being pwned.

Charizard is and always has been, my favourite pokemon.. but he MIGHT not be the best fighter there.
Infernapes a good fighter, mine knows; grass knot, aerial ace, focus blast and flamethrower ...... hes pretty damn strong

Good to know there's some Charmeleon loving going on. It just looks so badass compared to the wimpy looking Charmander, and although Charizard is far more useful due it having the ability to Fly, Charmeleon is just way cooler.
Although of course, I'm inclined to say that Ponyta is the best Fire-type.
Speed + Ability to scorch enemies= Incredibly short battles, therefore, Win!
yeah, Charizard is cool but Heatran is just a powerhouse, in my copy of platnum when my Heatran was Lv 60 i had him destroying Lv 80s

It should of been one pokemon from each evolution chain. I mean Magmortar was higher than Magmar, and Charizard higher than Charmeleon, so the lower should of got forgotten and different mon should of took their place like......TYPHLOSION!!!

I'm already putting together my ultimate team, but I'm still far from finished. It's a lot harder than I first thought. My current line up is as follows, complete with moveset:
Infernape Lvl 100 (Flamethrower, Close Combat, Thunderpunch, Protect)
Dragonite Lvl 100 (Dragon Claw, Waterfall, Fire Punch, Protect)
Kingdra Lvl 100 (Brine, Dragon Pulse, Ice Beam, Protect)
Electivire Lvl 100 (Thunderpunch, Brick Break, Earthquake, Protect)
I'm training a Cherrim to act as a support type with its Flower Gift ability. It'll know Solarbeam, Toxic, Sunny Day and Protect. The final member I'm still deciding. I'm thinking perhaps Spiritomb or Chimecho.
