After being delayed back in the spring of 2013 due to creative differences, it sounds like New Line's reboot of Vacation, the classic comedy starring Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo, is finally back on track. Ed Helms is still leading the film with a script from Horrible Bosses writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, and the two are also making their directorial debut on the film as well. And now THR has news of two more cast members joining, one of them surprising and the other not. Horrible Bosses co-star Charlie Day is taking a role, but so is Marvel's Thor franchise star Chris Hemsworth. Read on!

Day's role is merely a cameo as a river-rafting guide that a grown-up Rusty Griswold (Helms) and his family encounter on their road trip. Meanwhile, Hemsworth's role will be Stone Crandall, an up-and-coming anchorman who is the husband of Rusty’s sister, Audrey. The role of Audrey has yet to be cast, and it's not clear if she and her husband are on vacation with Rusty or if they merely pay a visit to see her on their trip. While Day is a seasoned comic actor, this is the first straight-up comedy role that Hemswoth has taken on, though he's shown solid comedic chops in small doses in Marvel's cinematic universe. Production on Vacation finally begins in September, so stay tuned for more.

One question, why? Are we at the point in the film industry to were all we can make are reboots and adaptions of books? The original Vacation films were awesome, no need to taint the series with a modern day reboot with the Griswold kids.

There are so many movies being made now - they've become over saturated. Fresh ideas are hard to come by. I think movie makers are looking for brand recognition and franchise names that people know and feel nostalgic for and already have a fan base. The book adaptations are mostly young adult books, and they are best sellers, and make a lot of money generally. So more of them means more money to be made. I never cared for the Vacation movies - But yeah, I don't like this trend either. I'd rather see someone remake a movie with a great premise that didn't reach it's potential.

And why not? Should the franchise be over? Should every franchise stop? Which ones? Especially in the comedy realm are plenty of 'original' movies I think. For superhero and dramathriller I could agree but is there some reason why the Vacation movies (is this under the National Lampoon's label still, I wonder?) can't exist past 2014 without it being a hacky money-grab? I'd like to see more original films make it to the big screen, but I have nothing against most sequels.

    Eh.

I cannot stand Helms. I am sure this will be pretty bad.

More Charlie Day exposure is never bad. He needs more work!

I take it he'll be taking on the Christie Brinkley role?

This is going to be abysmal. Ridiculous to even try, and now Charlie Day in there to ruin it even more.
