So my female ~12 yr old calico has been dealing with excessive itching for about the past year. She over-grooms her belly and the insides of her legs and scratches bald spots on the sides of her face. She's inside only and has been checked for fleas multiple times (all negative). The treatments have been as follows:
Last September: First noticed the bald belly, vet gave steroid shot. The itching stopped and she seemed fine. The fur mostly grew back.
Last December: Noticed she was licking a lot and getting bald again so back to the vet. This time she got 3 steroid shots once every 2 weeks.
March: Same thing, back to the vet, tried the 3 x 2 weeks shot thing again.
June: Itching again, vet prescribed Atopica liquid. She HATES taking it. I've been mixing it with tuna water just to get her to swallow some. Around this time we also started to look for causes of the allergy. We switched to a limited ingredient food and changed the litter brand. Also started giving her salmon oil.
August: Atopica seemed to work well at first, and then not as well. Back to the vet for another steroid shot and blood tests. Everything good in blood and urine, no hyperthyroidism and no liver issues from steroids. Vet said to keep giving Atopica as that + steroids might work.
Present: The last steroid shot worked like the ones before, but now seems to be fading. I'm still giving salmon oil and the Atopica, but really feeling like neither one is doing much of anything to help. I work from home so I see her quite a bit grooming. She's pretty aggressive and bites her skin a lot. I can tell she's irritated and will go from calmly sleeping to awake and biting at her paw or belly really fast. Just about the only thing that I've done so far that I think actually worked is the salmon oil might be helping her hairballs.
So, any ideas on what to try next? The vet seems pretty intent on the atopica, and while it kind of works, it's certainly not controlling the issue even when given every day. Also, it's a fairly expensive and difficult to administer option.
I'm wondering if at this point, it might be better to work on the symptoms rather than the allergy. I'm looking at oatmeal/anti-itch shampoos and I really wouldn't mind bathing her once a week if it would help. She might not like it but it's a small price to pay.
Also there was a product the vet recommended that I can't quite recall the name. It was a fish oil/moisturizer drop that you put on the cat's skin once a month. It was sort of like flea medicine and came in little droppers. I'll post more info on that if I can figure out what it was called.View Thread
