EXCLUSIVE: Brooklyn councilman wants flashing lights, loud sounds on snow plows after two people killed this winter

Mark Treyger says the requirements, which he will introduce in a bill this week, would let pedestrians know when a snow plow is approaching during dangerous weather conditions. This winter, a 36-year-old pregnant woman was run down by a plow in a Sunset Park parking lot, and an elderly man was hit and killed in Brighton Beach.

City councilman Mark Treyger (D-Brooklyn) says he will introduce a bill to require snow plows to have flashing lights and emit loud sounds to alert pedestrians they are approaching.

After two pedestrians were killed by snow plows this winter, a city councilman is proposing to require plows to have flashing lights and make sounds to warn walkers.

Mark Treyger (D-Brooklyn) said the bill, which he will introduce this week, would let pedestrians know when a plow is approaching in snowy conditions.

“You’re dealing with low visibility,” he said. “If we can buy a few seconds for these pedestrians to give them time to react, this could save a life.”

Plows would be required to have flashing lights and make a loud, distinctive noise, such as the beep large trucks emit when they back up.

Two people were killed by plows this winter in Brooklyn. A 36-year-old pregnant woman was run down in a Sunset Park parking lot, and an elderly man was hit and killed in Brighton Beach.

“These are vehicles that are deployed during emergency situations, and they should be treated like emergency vehicles,” Treyger said.

The rules would apply both to Department of Sanitation vehicles and plows contracted by the city to clean up snow.
