Orthopaedic Surgery Programs & Services

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is one of the largest and most accomplished orthopaedic surgery programs in the country for the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in patient care, education, and research. Basic and translational orthopaedic research is based at our Musculoskeletal Research Center, where researchers work to create and discover treatments, techniques, and devices that improve the treatment of a wide range of conditions, from arthritis and fractures to damaged cartilage and genetic disorders that affect the musculoskeletal system. The clinical expertise of the faculty represents all subspecialty areas of orthopaedic surgery, including Adult Reconstructive, Sports Medicine, Spine, Shoulder & Elbow, Foot & Ankle, Hand Surgery, Trauma & Fracture, Orthopaedic Oncology, and Pediatric Orthopaedics. These divisions provide care to tens of thousands of patients each year: from infants to the elderly, from the simplest orthopaedic cases to the most complex. In addition to our subspecialty divisions, world-class patient care is delivered via the department's specialized orthopaedic centers:

• The Bone Healing Center cares for patients with problem fractures and conditions that impede bone healing. The Center's multidisciplinary team use novel treatments for bone healing, including stem cell treatments, electronic bone stimulation, bone morphogenic proteins, platelet rich plasma therapy, ultrasound therapy and other cutting-edge therapies.
• The Diabetes Foot and Ankle Center provides interdisciplinary care for lower extremity diseases in patients with diabetes, evaluating and treating all podiatric conditions including nerve damage, foot ulcers, foot deformities, and poor circulation.
• The Joint Preservation Center is dedicated to advancing the operative and non-operative treatment of joint related problems affecting the knee, shoulder, hip, elbow and ankle, aiming to reduce symptoms, restore function and delay the onset of degenerative arthritis in the young, active patient population.
• The Joint Replacement Center of NYC is one of the world's largest providers of total joint replacements, performing over 3,000 procedures annually and featuring some of the world's top clinicians.  
• The New York Hip Center provides an integrated, team-oriented approach to the evaluation and treatment of developmental, traumatic, or degenerative hip disorders in patients of all ages. The Center specializes in the cutting-edge, minimally invasive anterior total hip replacement technique.
• The Occupational and Industrial Orthopaedic Center (OIOC) provides clinical, educational, research, and consulting services in the prevention and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries, disorders, and disabilities in the workplace.  OIOC is known worldwide for its Return to Work program, with extremely high success rates for returning individuals to work.
• The Orthopaedic Immediate Care Center (I-Care) is the only walk-in orthopaedic care facility in New York City, offering a unique service that deals specifically with urgent orthopaedic injuries.
• Spine Center surgeons specialize in conservative care for spine disorders and use the most up-to-date treatments, including artificial discs for the neck and back that lessen surgical complications and post-surgical pain and disability. Center physicians evaluate and provide ongoing care to more than 5,000 patients and perform over 1,300 surgeries every year.

Rheumatology Programs & Services

The Department of Medicine's Division of Rheumatology is a nationally known center for the diagnosis and treatment of rheumatologic disorders including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis, lupus, fibromyalgia and vasculitis. The Division of Rheumatology at HJD is world-famous for the translational research conducted at its Rheumatology Research Laboratory, the Peter D. Seligman Center for Advanced Therapeutics, renowned for breakthrough research in arthritis and Systematic Lupus Erythematosus, and at its Osteoporosis Center. Research conducted includes the study of drugs, drug delivery systems and protocols, and the roles genes play in the development and treatment of rheumatic diseases, with a particular focus on the highly complex autoimmune diseases.

The Division also offers care to patients with rheumatological conditions at its dedicated centers:

• The Center for Arthritis and Autoimmunity offers an integrated, interdisciplinary program for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of rheumatologic conditions. Patients have access to complete rheumatologic evaluations, orthopaedic and neurological consultative services, and participation in clinical trials using the most advanced interventional therapies, highly sophisticated diagnostic testing, and complementary medicine.
• The Center for Lupus Care and Research offers innovative programs in research, education, patient care, and community outreach for patients with Systematic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE).  The center has a preeminent lupus study and treatment program, particularly for pregnancy and lupus. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Registry for Neonatal Lupus is located at HJD.
• The Osteoporosis Center offers a multidisciplinary approach to the evaluation and treatment of osteoporosis, including a range of advanced drug therapies. Center faculty and staff also conduct pioneering research on new ways to manage osteoporosis.
• Behçet's Syndrome Evaluation, Treatment and Research Center is the largest center in North America that focuses on Behçet's syndrome, a vasculitis that effects young patients in their 20s and 30s, and can cause skin, gastrointestinal, eye, and brain involvement in addition to arthritis.

Other Specialized Programs & Services

The Hospital for Joint Diseases offers a number of unique and highly specialized services to provide tailored, world-class care to patients with specific musculoskeletal conditions and needs:

• The Center for Children, created under the auspices of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, is a key component of pediatric musculoskeletal care at HJD. Here, children receive personalized, interdisciplinary care for musculoskeletal and neuromuscular disorders in a "white-coat free" zone, to minimize patient anxiety. The Center also features an interactive play area to entertain children while they wait to see their specialists.
• The Harkness Center for Dance Injuries provides high-quality, affordable care for the dance community, delivered by faculty who are highly respected and accomplished in dance and athletic medicine. Since opening in 1989, the center has been visited by more than 8,000 dancers and has served as the official orthopaedic consultant for a number of leading professional dance companies. 
• The Helen L. and Martin S. Kimmel Wound Healing Center is dedicated to improving the quality of life for patients and their families through research and clinical care of the wound patient, using the most advanced, evidence-based techniques to track the progress of the wound from initial visit through each subsequent visit to ensure the wound is healing.
• Initiative for Women with Disabilities Elly and Steve Hammerman Health & Wellness Center (IWD) is a multidisciplinary center committed to providing respectful, high quality medical and gynecological services in a fully accessible environment for women and adolescent girls with physical disabilities. The center also offers nutritional consultations, wellness services, classes such as yoga, Tai Chi, and fitness, and mind-body physical therapy.
