Fairfax offer may spark bidding war for BlackBerry patents

We may see a lot of action surrounding BlackBerry over the next 60 days while Fairfax Financial conducts its due diligence and while BlackBerry seeks out alternate bids. One particularly interesting thing to watch will be if the Fairfax offer draws any outside interest from companies who are interested in BlackBerry’s patent portfolio, which has an estimated worth of between $2 billion to $3 billion. Chris Marlett, CEO of IP-focused investment bank MDB Capital Group, tells CNN that BlackBerry’s patent portfolio could draw substantial interest because it’s the last major treasure trove of mobile patents that hasn’t been gobbled up by the larger players in the smartphone market. Verizon CEO: Unlimited data plans are a dead end, despite Sprint and T-Mobile

Do you regret giving up your unlimited data plan when you first made the jump to capped 4G LTE services? Well too bad, says Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam: Unlimited data plans are gone for good. CNET reports that McAdam this week said during an investor conference that there was no way rival carriers Sprint and T-Mobile could keep offering smartphone users unlimited data forever because “if you allow unlimited usage, you just run out of gas.” McAdam then went on to blame the usual suspects for the death of the unlimited data plan: Bandwidth-hungry mobile users who keep clogging up Verizon’s precious spectrum with their high-definition videos. What Microsoft can learn from BlackBerry’s big mistake: People like ‘toys’ after all

What Microsoft can learn from BlackBerry’s big mistake: People like ‘toys’ after all

“Tools, not toys! Tools, not toys!” Does this refrain sound familiar? It’s the same tune that BlackBerry executives whistled in the dark as they insisted that people didn’t really want iPhones and Android smartphones because those devices weren’t secure and couldn’t help people do “real work” as BlackBerry devices did. We all know how well this has turned out: It seems that most people did actually want iPhones and Galaxy smartphones after all, no matter how often BlackBerry and its fans derided those devices a mere “toys.” More →

Apple iPhone 5c BOM Analysis

This is the No.1 reason why Apple is replacing the iPhone 5 with the 5c

This is the No.1 reason why Apple is replacing the iPhone 5 with the 5c

When it launched the iPhone 5c this year, Apple broke its long-standing tradition of keeping its most recent high-end iPhone model on the market and selling it out a discount. And now we have a good idea of why: It’s all about money. AllThingsD points us to a recent iPhone teardown conducted by IHS estimating that it costs between $173 and $183 to build an iPhone 5c, which means that it’s around $20 to $30 cheaper per unit to build than the now-discontinued iPhone 5. The math for Apple is pretty obvious in this case: It could either keep producing a hard-to-build high-end model and sell it on contract for $100 as it’s done with other older iPhones, or it could produce an easier-to-build model for less money and sell it at the same on-contract price. Seen from this perspective, it’s easy to see why Apple isn’t too worried about the 5c cutting into its margins anytime soon.

Elop’s contract reportedly gave him a big incentive to tank Nokia’s stock, sell company

Wild-eyed believers in the Grand Elop Conspiracy might feel a little less crazy this morning. Frequent BGR contributor Tero Kuittinen, writing over at Forbes, points us to some reports in the Finnish press showing that former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop actually did have massive incentives in his contract to tank Nokia’s shares and sell the company off. According to Kuittinen, Nokia added a clause to Elop’s contract that “entitled [him] to immediate share price performance bonus in case of a ‘change of control’ situation… such as selling of Nokia’s handset division.” Unsurprisingly, this clause was not part of the previous Nokia CEO’s contract. BlackBerry Fairfax Buyout Offer Analysis

It looks like Fairfax or bust for BlackBerry

It looks like Fairfax or bust for BlackBerry

Although Fairfax Financial is offering to pay $4.7 billion to acquire BlackBerry and take the company private, it’s still giving the BlackBerry board of directors some time to shop around for better offers. The chances of BlackBerry scoring a deal better than the one Fairfax is offering seem decidedly slim at the moment, however. Per Barron’s, Citigroup analyst Jim Suva writes that Fairfax likely went public with its buyout proposal to spur other bids in the company, an event that he describes as “unlikely.” What’s more, Suva thinks that Fairfax may have difficulty raising the capital it needs to buy BlackBerry because “the severity of [BlackBerry's] business fundamentals deterioration poses a real risk in this transaction.”

It’s about time: FAA to finally change in-flight electronics rules

It’s taken a long, long time but the Federal Aviation Administration finally looks poised to relax rules on using electronic devices during flights. The New York Times reports that the FAA this week will issue a set of recommendations to ease “most of” the rules that restrict what fliers can do with their smartphones, tablets and PCs while on airplanes. Among the restrictions the Times expects to stay in place are bans on making phone calls during flights, on using Wi-Fi during takeoff and on sending emails and text messages during takeoff. Just because the FAA is finally coming around to letting people use their electronic devices more on planes, however, doesn’t mean that the change will come soon: The Times says that the rules on in-flight electronics use won’t go into effect until next year.

BBM for iOS and Android launch delayed for at least a week

When it rains it pours for BlackBerry. Although there has been considerable interest in the new cross-platform version of BlackBerry Messenger, BlackBerry announced on Monday that the launch of BBM for iOS and Android has been delayed for at least another week. BlackBerry’s BBM chief Andrew Bocking said in a company blog post that the delay happened after “an unreleased, older version of the BBM for Android app was posted on numerous file sharing sites,” which “resulted in volumes of data traffic orders of magnitude higher than normal for each active user and impacted the system in abnormal ways.” The BBM team is now working to completely block the leaked versions of BBM from accessing BlackBerry’s servers before it launches the final version of the app. Bocking said that the fix isn’t expected to occur this week.

Gold rush: Champagne-colored iPhone fetches $10,000 on eBay

We finally might have found an Apple fan who is sillier than the ones who sat outside during a typhoon just so they wouldn’t lose their place in line for the iPhone 5s. As Business Insider notes, eBay users are now selling gold iPhone 5s models for thousands of dollars a piece, including one gold iPhone that just sold for a winning bid of more than $10,000. Gold iPhones have been in high demand ever since the iPhone 5s launched last Friday and we’ve heard several reports of early supply shortages for the device. Even so, it’s unclear why anyone would spend $10,000 for a device that will at some point be available for just $200 on contract especially since Apple is reportedly planning to ramp up gold iPhone production to meet demand.

BlackBerry announces $4.7 billion buyout plan from Fairfax Financial

BlackBerry’s fate is coming into focus. The company announced on Monday that it has signed a letter of intent with a consortium led by Fairfax Financial to buy out the company for about $4.7 billion, or $9 per share. Fairfax CEO Prem Watsa, a former BlackBerry board member, said that the buyout would make BlackBerry a private company and would “open an exciting new private chapter for BlackBerry, its customers, carriers and employees.” BlackBerry says it expects Fairfax to finish conducting its due diligence by November 4th. Even though the deal is non-binding at this point, BlackBerry will still have to pay Fairfax a fee of $0.30 per share if the deal doesn’t happen. BlackBerry shares jumped about 3% on on the news. The company’s full press release follows below.

Sorry, Microsoft: The Surface 2 looks dead on arrival

So Microsoft unveiled its Surface 2 tablet on Monday and there were absolutely no big surprises. The device features a 10.6-inch 1080p full-HD display, a Tegra 4 processor, a USB 3.0 port, a 25% improvement in battery life and a redesigned kickstand. The device is priced at $50 less than the original Surface RT at $449 but overall this is basically the Surface RT with better specs and a presumably improved Windows RT 8.1 operating system. It goes without saying that this will once again not end well for Microsoft. More →

Apple now letting customers check iPhone availability, pick up devices in stores

It’s taken a while but Apple has now added a feature to its Apple Store website that lets users check for iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c availability in their local Apple stores and reserve devices for pickup. Interested buyers can now check for availability in their areas after they select a finish, model and wireless carrier for their new iPhone by clicking on a “check availability” button and entering in their zip code. Once they see that there are iPhones available in their area, they can place an order with the store that will give them the option of picking up their device within an hour or so. Apple will send customers an email when their device is ready for pickup.
