Microsoft is live-streaming today’s Build keynote – here’s how to watch

Microsoft made some mistakes with Windows 8. The software, which was the first major step toward realizing Microsoft’s vision of a future where PC and tablet interfaces merge, was not well received by consumers or businesses. PC sales have slowed even more as a result, but Microsoft has shown that it is willing to take a few steps back by undoing some damage with its upcoming Windows 8.1 update. The Start button is coming back, though it likely won’t satisfy the horde of users wishing Microsoft would bring back its old Windows Start menu, and several other changes are in store as well. Microsoft’s annual Build conference kicks off with its customary keynote where Microsoft will focus on Windows 8.1 and more, and video of this year’s event will be streamed live on Microsoft’s Channel 9 site. The show begins at 12:00 p.m. EDT, 9:00 a.m. PDT, and a link to the live stream can be found below in the source section.

Samsung has been announcing new smartphones over the past few weeks like it’s going out of style. The Galaxy S4 mini, Galaxy S4 Zoom, Galaxy S4 Active and other handsets have all debuted recently, and Samsung is expected to have them all on hand during Thursday’s press conference — along with a few surprises. While some find it confusing, unveiling more than a half-dozen versions of the Galaxy S4 might be a smart play when it comes time to talk numbers; just as Apple lumps all of its iPhone models into one total sales figure, Samsung will be able to include all of these Galaxy S4 versions in a single shipment figure now that sales of the flagship model seem to be slowing. A wide variety of options has always been part of Samsung’s game plan though, and now we get to see exactly what the company has in store for us this summer. Samsung’s “Galaxy & Ativ” event is scheduled to kick off at 2:00 p.m. EDT, 11:00 a.m. PDT, and live streaming video of the press conference can be viewed below. More →

Apple’s WWDC keynote now underway: Tim Cook starts with state of the Apple union

Apple might not be the darling of Wall Street that it once was, but Apple fans and mobile developers are just as enthusiastic as ever. Tickets for WWDC 2013 sold out in under 3 minutes — it took just 71 seconds, in fact — and the line to get into the Moscone Center in San Francisco this morning stretched as far as the eye could see. Apple’s opening keynote is finally now underway, and CEO Tim Cook started things off by noting that Apple now has more than 6 million registered developers and 1.5 million of them have registered in the past year alone. Does the world need another new mobile OS? Firefox and ZTE think so

The new ZTE (0763) Open is perhaps more significant for what it’s not than what it is. The handset does not run Android, iOS, Windows Phone, BlackBerry 10 or Tizen. In a world dominated by just a few established major players, the introduction of Firefox’s new mobile OS, alongside handsets such as the Open, is pretty big news. Banking on the untapped demand in emerging markets yet to see the explosion of smartphone growth that has swept the rest of the planet, Firefox and ZTE are hoping to make headway with their own unique offering. ZTE Grand Memo preview: Destined to get lost in the phablet crowd

One thing is quite clear: Samsung’s (005930) gamble on the 5-inch handset market is catching fire. Manufacturers seem to be scrambling to concoct their very own iteration of the “phablet,” clearly attempting to capitalize on the newly forged market space created by the world’s largest Android manufacturer. Unfortunately, where Samsung led with innovation and foresight, most of these other companies seem to be playing a rather embarrassing game of catch up. Case in point is ZTE (0763). More →
