Best Adventure Game

Traditional adventure games don't focus on shooting, fighting, or other action elements, but rather showcase their exploration, puzzle-solving, and storytelling components. While the PC adventure genre has been on the decline in recent years, adventure games have been experiencing something of a resurgence on consoles and handheld game systems. The following games are finalists for the best of the diverse 2005 crop.

Though the game is heavily text-driven and there's little replayability, it's a bright, rich, and lengthy adventure that could hardly have been improved upon otherwise.

Trace Memory

ESRB: Teen
Check Prices

Trace Memory serves up an interesting story with a handful of inspired puzzles that are all too quickly conquered.

And the winner is... Indigo Prophecy
Platform: PC
ESRB: Mature

Adventure games tend to have strong storytelling, but Indigo Prophecy elevates the genre to a sublime, cinematic level. The engrossing, malleable tale of a man trying to solve a murder he himself committed is matched with a unique control scheme that does away with inventories and layers of menus. With simple and intuitive command gestures to handle everything--from dynamically evolving conversations to tense action scenes--Indigo Prophecy earns this award not only by being a great game, but by managing to infuse a somewhat stagnating genre with new and vibrant life.
