Do you have a problem with your periods?

If you are concerned about your periods, we have information on:

Absent periods (not having periods)

Heavy periods

Irregular periods

Painful periods

Starting periods

Tips for parents on what age to talk to daughters (and sons) about periods and what to tell them including common questions and answers

A period is the part of the menstrual cycle when a woman bleeds from her vagina for a few days. In most women this happens every 28 days or so.

It's common for women to have a cycle that's longer or shorter than this, from 24 to 35 days.

Girls have their first period when they start puberty. This can be between the ages of eight and 16 years, although girls most commonly start their periods at about 12 years old. Your periods will continue until the menopause, which usually occurs at the age of around 45 to 55.

The menstrual cycle

Each menstrual cycle starts on the first day of your period (day one) and lasts until the day before your next period begins.

To understand periods and the menstrual cycle, it helps to know about the reproductive organs inside a woman's body. These are:

  • two ovaries, where eggs are stored, developed and released
  • the womb (uterus), where a fertilised egg implants and a pregnancy grows
  • two thin tubes called fallopian tubes, which connect the ovaries to the womb
  • the cervix, which is the lower part of the womb that connects to the vagina
  • the vagina, which is a tube of muscle connecting the cervix to the outside of the body

In each menstrual cycle, rising levels of the hormone oestrogen cause the ovary to develop an egg and release it (this process is called ovulation). The womb lining gets thicker, ready for a possible pregnancy.

The egg travels down the fallopian tube and you can get pregnant now if the egg meets any sperm. Find out more about your fertile time and getting pregnant.

The egg lives for about 24 hours. If pregnancy doesn't happen, the egg is absorbed into your body. The womb lining comes away and leaves the body, mixed with blood, as a period (the menstrual flow).

Getting pregnant

Your fertile time (when you can get pregnant) can be difficult to pinpoint. It's around the time you ovulate, which in most women is around 12-14 days before the start of their next period.

A woman can't get pregnant if she doesn't ovulate. Some hormonal methods of contraception, such as the combined pill, the patch and the injection work by stopping ovulation.

Body changes

Your body produces different amounts of hormones at different times during your cycle. This can cause changes in your body and your emotions.

Your vaginal secretions, for example, change throughout your menstrual cycle. Around the time of ovulation they become thinner and stretchy, a bit like raw egg white.

You may also have mood swings in the days before your period, or notice your breasts getting swollen and painful.

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a range of symptoms that can affect women in the days before their period.

Hi

I hav been using microgynon the combined pill just for one month and had sex with a guy just twice in that month.I stopped the pill after having it for 21 days as instructed by the doctor and waited for my periods. 4-5 days after the pill being stopped I got my period but then the doctor said since there was a delay of 4-5 days it might not be a actual period but can be a bleeding. So I was tensed and soon after the 3 weeks of intercourse I took pregnancy test twice, both the results were negative.I was relaxed but then my next period was due on 7th of this month but till now (today's date is 13th) I have not got it.So is there any chance that am pregnant or will it be some delay? Should I wait for some more time to see whether I will get a period?

I don't know if anyone actually replies to these comments as they are all questions and no answers, but here goes....
I have had a Mirena Coil sionce 1998 (refitted every 5 years), and had it removed in December as we plan to try tfor a baby. I had no periods, or only occassional spotting on teh coil, which was normal. Since I have begun having periods again, they are regular - 26 days, but only last 2 days each and are very light. Before the coil I had painful, fairly irregulr but very heavy periods.

Are such short and light periods normal or can this affect my fertility? I mentioned this to my GP who said @that seems bit odd' which was helpful!!

To all worried that they may be late starting their periods: I am 32 and started mine when I was 14. At the time peers can make you feel like it's a big issue but it really isn't: it soon becomes as normal as eating your tea or brushing your hair. I have a friend who is much curvier than me and started when she was 15. There is really nothing to worry about unless you're 17 or older and nothing's happened.

I have recently been learning about natural contraception/fertility awareness from an excellent NHS practitioner in the field, and it's been a revelation. It's high time the menstrual cycle as a whole was better taught in schools, rather than just the "periods" part of it. I've learnt, for instance, that the sticky white, or sometimes clear slippery, 'discharge' (I prefer the term cervical secretions) which all of us experience is a normal and healthy part of the menstrual cycle. And to think that for years I thought there must be something wrong with me?!

Also that a normal menstrual cycle can be anything between 21-36 days. Also that a healthy cycle varies: anyone who tells you their periods are "as regular as clockwork" is either on the pill (and hence not having a true period) or not telling the truth! Also that there are a number of days each month when you're infertile.

I'd highly recommend fertility awareness/natural contraception as it has been really empowering for me to find out how it all works and get to understand myself better. It involves keeping a daily record of your temperature and any cervical secretions noted. You are definitely in a much stronger position to make choices about your health and fertility once you have this knowledge. It can also be used to assess when you are likely to be most fertile, if you are trying to conceive. Highly recommended!

Hi, i have had bad periods for about 13 years now. im in my mid 20s and i suffer from really bad period pains, so severe that i cant go to work or do anything. i also get very dizzy and nauseous. i have been to the doctors alot of times, they have prescribed me all sorts of drugs, neither have worked. I am now on the contraceptive pill which works perfectly! I still get the pain but not as bad as it was.

I have had an ultrasound to see if there are any problems and were told there werent.

I dont want to be on the pill for the rest of my life as it can cause problems and is a pain to take on a day to day basis. If i come off the pill, i get bad pains again and the symptoms come back really strong.

is there any other tests i can have that would determine if there is anything wrong?

Hi, I'm 32 and have been on the pill injection for 5 years........2 years ago i came off the injection, with the hope of becoming pregnant....This has not yet happened. I have had a few appointments with an endocrinologist, who believes i may have polycystic ovary syndrome. I've had a transvaginal ultrasound which showed up a 3cm cyst. He is now referring me to a gynaecologist. I'm feeling very low and worried that i won't conceive. I have not had a period since i began the pill injection, which is now 7 years ago.......I'm desperatley worried and don't seem to be getting much help. I have an 8 year old daughter and really want to give her a brother or sister, can anyone suggest anything that may help?

I am now in my thirties and have tried both the injection and the coil.

Firstly I remember my periods didnt start untill I was in my late teens and were increadably heavy for 7 days, and were usually preceeded 7 days before I came on with migraines.

To everyone. Don't worry too much you are all unique and will start when it is right for you, I found my mum has always been great support when I had worries and concerns. Mainly because she remembers what it was like for her. I also found when I was away at university the practice nurses were great wells of information and really supportive as well.

Periods are a natural part of been us and as women we shouldnt be afraid to talk about it when something concerns us.

Personally I found the injection weas great for me as it reduced my periods down to the point where i never had any because i had been on it so long, then when i changed to the coil i continued to have none.

Now I have periods that last 3-4 days and are so much lighter it is bliss. Though I still get the period cramps it has always made things managable.

Hope this has helped people.

I am 21 years old in good health, i came off my pill 3 and half weeks ago halfway through my packet (id already missed a few so thought it would be best to come off them) I had a bleed 3 days later which was like a normal period and lasted 5 days as usual.
I have started trying for a baby with my partner, however we are worried as we have both have chlamydia twice, each time not very long and has been treated straight away. My partner did give it to me first and was unsure how long he had it. Will this effect me getin pregnant, either me having problems or him having problems...

I stopped taking my pill last month as I am now trying for a baby.
I have been on the pill for about 13 years and I know it can take a while for your body to get back into it's natural sync. So far (over a month later) i've not had a period but I know I'm not pregnant yet. Does anyone know how long it could take for my body to get back to normal, or if being on the pill for a great length of time can mean getting pregnant could take ages!
I know someone that conceived within months of not taking the pill and they were on it for 10 years, but i've been told this is uncommon.
Any advice appreciated.

Hi, I really need some serious advice. I'm 18 and for the past 3months ive been on my period constantly. They are sometimes heavy or light. I don't want to visit my doctor because I really don't like to speak about things like this to someone I don't no face to face. I'm a virgin so it can't be anything to do with sex. I'm currently with someone though and having to put off sex all the time due to this is becoming a HUGE problem. I'm really worried there is something wrong so please can anyone reply.
Thanks.

TO JESSIE
Firstly, what an eloquent comment!
Re: advice on inserting a tampon, I had great difficulty with this too during the early years of my period.
You already know to relax, great start.
It can be easier to insert if you stand with one leg on the floor, with the other foot and leg on the toilet seat. Sounds funny but it can help!
My other piece of advice is try using a vaginal lubricant, such as KY Jelly. I know it might be embarrassing to buy, but it definitely helps. Discuss this option with your mum- you don't want to worry her that you're having sex too early, it's just to help with tampons.
As for everyone else who is still waiting for their period to start and worrying- DON'T! I miss the days when I was pain-free and didn't get bloated and depressed because of my periods (I get very heavy ones)! It can hurt, make your breasts uncomfortably swollen (it hurts to take my bra off during this time because they're so heavy and tender) amongst other things- just enjoy being yourself- adulthood comes quickly and it doesn't go away! It doesn't make you any less female or grown-up/mature if your period hasn't started and other girls have. It just means you save yourself some soreness and you can spend the money that you would have spent on sanitary towels/tampons on something nicer!
Hope this helps. xxx

To almaaa,
Hi My name is Jessie and i'm 14, i have only just started my periods this year. I used to stress and stress over it, and i was so worried that i would never start. But actually you need not worry if you havn't started your periods till you are arounf 16. And then you should visit your doctor. my mum started her periods when she was 14, knowing that made me feel better before i started, and at the moment my periods are very irregular, i have one in april then one in july and then one in september that has just ended! I think you should ask you mum when she started, and it will probably be around 14! That really made me feel better to find out! And recently I got an amusing leaflet about periods which i passed arround my class and we all had a good laugh, then when we talked about it (this was year 9) i descovered that only about 75% of the class had started, that surprised me cos i thought everyone whould have! But I think you should just not worry about it! Because when you get your periods its a relief but actually you might get period pains (i didn't till my third period and my mum gets them all the time) but even if you dont you have to buy all the stuff, then change them reguarly, which is annoying at school, then you have heavy flow at some times in the period (i have it on the second day of 'flowing'). Then yuo cant swim unless you wear a tampon, (and tampons are quite easy to put in (if you relax, tensing muscles makes it impossable) but can be uncomfortable if they are not in properly and i can never seem to get them in far enough!
So please dont worry about them, because they are not that bad, but they are not that good, just wait till you get them and dont try and bring them on, they start when your hight and wieght even out (fat people start earlyer than skinny people who start later). But dont put on weight just to start, there is no need!
If anyone has any advice about putting in tampon i will check this page regularly!
Love Jessie xxx
