FINALY! I've waited for this book it seems for EVAH! By now y'all know how much I love this author's work and as much as I was looking forward to this story, once I found out they were changing the title (I will ALWAYS refer to this novel as THE MAKING OF A ROGUE) and then the cover (which is not consistent to the series), I was getting anxiety attacks in regards to the content. See, this is what happens to someone like me who takes her ROMANCE reading to a whole new level. And for that, I give Shana Galen full credit. If she didn't write her characters so well, I doubt my feelings would be engaged at all.

Well, I should not have fretted at all, although there is one itty-bitty thing that I would have preferred, and that is the Prologue. The other two books in the series, `The Making of a Duchess' and `The Making of a Gentleman', both start with the Prologue of the faithful night as peasants break in and I hoped this one would be as well because I wanted to find out how Bastien got away. So this is one more thing that `they' changed, and changing these three things in the middle of the series (or in this case at the end of it) aggravated me to no end. However, after reading the story, I'm now past it and let me tell you my thoughts on this wonderful end to this series.

If you've never read The Sons of Revolution and this is your first book in it, S.T.O.P. Do not read it...YET. Please, please find the other two and read them in order. You will be glad you did. This third installment can stand alone, but it shouldn't. This is a series that you'll enjoy so much more once you read Julian and Armand's stories.

Sebastien Harcourt, Marquis of de Valere has survived that night, but scars he carries are not on the outside but rather buried deep inside his heart. He is certain that he's lost his whole family to the fire and to survive he needs to be far away from France and boarding a ship he heads out to sea.

Raeven Russell is an Admiral's daughter with vengeance in her heart. She aims to avenge the death of her fiancé who, it was reported, has been killed by Captain Cutlass and she is more than ready to face the bastard pirate. Nothing and no one will stand in her way when she spots him in a local tavern and challenges him to a sword fight.

Bastien, now known only as Captain Cutlass, is taken aback by a challenge of this young `man' who wants to cut him to pieces, and fighting `him' isn't what he's looking for. He has much more urgent business to attend to, like finding Jourdain, the pirate who killed the man who taught him everything he knows about ships and sailing. He's been on his trail for a while now and he knows that he won't rest until he gets his revenge.

What a shock he's in for to find out that the `boy' is no boy but a young woman! And here's where we're off on an adventure along our impetuous heroine.

This ending was bittersweet for me as I said goodbye to Harcourt's (until the next re-read only). Ms. Galen delivers high sea drama, humor and action, so well that you better bring your sea legs along for this adventure!

You'll root for these two as they pursue the enemy while facing their individual vendettas and help each other heal. Together they'll face her father, English Navy, nasty pirates, their past and the de Valere family.

This is a wonderfully entertaining, fast pacing conclusion to the Sons of the Revolution series that had me laughing out loud and shedding a tear or two. Harcourt men, Julian, Armand and Bastien stole my heart and I thank Ms. Galen for bringing them all to life! Highly recommend it; not to be missed and always to be re-read!

Melanie

1.0 out of 5 stars An Unbelievable Book... February 14, 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
...and not in a good way. (Spoiler alert-I will be discussing things from the book)

I constantly found myself rolling my eyes while reading this book. I should have downloaded a sample first prior to purchasing, but I have read the other two books in the series and don't remember disliking them...I don't remember really loving them either, but that's another review. From the start, the heroine, RaEven (must have the E so as not to be confused with the bird, although she was named after the bird because she has black hair), is immature and I questioned a lot of her actions. If you are afraid of blood, why are you so bloodthirsty? What end effect are you hoping to achieve when you practice swordsmanship, or throwing your dagger? There will be blood when you use those instruments on other people. If you are the daughter of an English admiral, why are you being raised on a ship? Your father really couldn't afford to keep you with a nanny or relatives? Okay, so maybe Galen wants a spunky, ballsy heroine...nope, this girl was childish and didn't make any sense. She's avenging her fiance, but is hot for her enemy. She hates the hero, but can't keep her hands off of him. She challenges him to a duel, but can't seem to kill him...As you can see, I found her very annoying and questioning her every move, which in turn made the book annoying.

The hero, Captain Cutlass, was the redeeming factor in this book. His only fault is finding RaEven attractive. Maybe he was at sea for a LOOOOONG time before he saw her...Oh, no wait, I'm sorry. He does have some faults. He is a successful pirate, yet when he is in the lurch with an enemy, he turns to...RaEven?? Because she's so bright...and constant...

I am upset because I felt I couldn't put it down. I kept reading to see if it would improve, but it didn't. Everything was predictable, everything was tied up neatly in the end. I think the end to the series, and Bastien's story could have headed in a different direction. Maybe Galen was in a rush to finish?? Maybe she ran out of plausible ideas?

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, Fresh, Fascinating! February 9, 2012
By Joan
Format:Mass Market Paperback
The mark of a truly talented writer is not seeing their mark at all. Fantastic writing takes years of hard work and perfected skills. A fantastic writer makes it all look effortless. Shana Galen shows that kind of talent in the pages of this fabulous February release, THE ROGUE PIRATE'S BRIDE.

This is the third book in Sons of the Revolution series, but the first that I've read, so let me tell you now, you will thoroughly enjoy this book even if you have not read the first two. In fact, I venture to say you might even enjoy it more.

As a lover and eternal student of writing craft, it's rare to find a book that takes me away. Consciously or unconsciously, I look for style, technique, voice. Within a few pages, I knew Shana Galen's THE ROGUE PIRATE'S BRIDE had it all. But I quickly discovered it had one hell of a lot more, too. I read this book from the first page to the last and couldn't tell you where I stopped noticing all Shana's clever techniques, because I lost myself in Raeven and Bastien's world.

The book begins with a heroine I couldn't help but love--spunky, determined, courageous and foolish in the name of love, which I found completely endearing. Raeven believes Bastian, the hero, has killed her fiancé in a battle at sea and is determined to avenge his death. Bastian is impossibly intriguing. Dark and mysterious, dubbed a pirate, he is definitely in that yummy bad boy class. He's strong and capable, arrogant and cunning. Together the two shoot sparks across the pages.

With chemistry like that, Shana's got a hot start. But Shana amps the sexual tension when Bastien tires of Raeven's diligence and takes her as a prisoner of sorts to play cabin girl for him aboard his ship. The combination of the interplay between the characters and the situation is fabulous fun - and never a dull moment when Raeven, the clever sprite, escapes the ship.

When the two meet again, Raeven still bent on revenge and Bastien searching for the man who killed his mentor, the two collide in another burst of lusty sparks and quick wit. Adventure, snarky dialogue and hilarious situations ensue as they are chased by Bastien's enemies, and ultimately Raeven is caught up in Bastien's personal fight.

But Bastien's got another fight on his hands because not only is Raeven is a spit-fire who pushes all his buttons and challenges him in ways no other woman ever has, but she's the daughter of a British Navy Admiral who will stop at nothing to get his daughter back from this thieving pirate.

While the entire book skipped at a fantastic pace, the last third was a can't-turn-the-pages-fast-enough read. Shana writes action with skill, turns plot in unexpected and thrilling ways and designs fresh and fascinating characters.

One intriguing twist to Bastien's background - if you've read the first two books in this series, Sons of the Revolution, you already know what this is - which is developed toward the end of the book unravels into a thoroughly satisfying conclusion, providing not just a happily ever after, but a nearly fairytale ending I found extremely fulfilling.

THE ROGUE PIRATE'S BRIDE is a true romantic adventure--fun, fresh and fascinating.
