review
The Simon Sisters consisted of Lucy Simon and her younger sister, Carly, both of them daughters of the co-founder of the Simon & Schuster publishing company. The sisters formed a folk duo in the early '60s and were signed to Kapp Records. "Winkin', Blinkin', & Nod" (sometimes printed as "Winken, Blinken and Nod") was Lucy Simon's musical adaptation of the children's poem by Eugene Field. It made for a lovely folk song when sung in harmony by the sisters, who accompanied themselves on acoustic guitars. Released as a single in the spring of 1964, it was a little bit behind the curve of popular music -- the folk boom was quickly giving way to the British Invasion -- but it still managed to get into the charts briefly. The sisters followed with "Cuddlebug," but "Winkin', Blinkin', & Nod" turned out to be their commercial apex, and they broke up when Lucy Simon got married. Carly Simon, of course, went on to emerge as a major singer/songwriter in the early '70s, while Lucy Simon, sticking to the children's theme of "Winkin', Blinkin', & Nod," wrote the music for the 1991 Broadway musical The Secret Garden.
