Jets sign free agent quarterback Drew Stanton and wide receiver Chaz Schilens

After three relatively quiet days, the Jets signed their first two free agents on Friday.

The Daily News first reported on Twitter that Gang Green signed quarterback Drew Stanton to a one-year, $1.25 million deal. The team announced that it also agreed to terms on a deal with wide receiver Chaz Schilens. A source told the News that Schilens inked a one-year deal for $765,000 (with $500,000 guaranteed).

One week after the Jets renewed their commitment to Mark Sanchez by signing him to a three-year contract extension, Gang Green has found his backup for 2012.

The Jets targeted Stanton, the Lions’ second-round pick in 2007, shortly after the start of the free agency on Tuesday. Stanton flew to New Jersey on Thursday before coming to an agreement on Friday.

"I'm extremely excited to get an opportunity to come to an organization like this,” Stanton said in a team press release. “Everybody from top to bottom has impressed me. I just think everything in general is first-class. The nice thing is we're all going to be learning Tony Sparano's offense together. My goal is to help Mark (Sanchez) produce on the field and to help this organization win football games.”

Stanton, 27, had four career starts in four seasons in Detroit. He won two of his three starts in 2010 after getting thrust into the starting role after injuries to Matthew Stafford and Shaun Hill.

Stanton didn’t take any snaps as the Lions’ third-string quarterback last season. He left little doubt that he wanted an opportunity to be a No. 2 quarterback.

Now, he gets his wish.

"It's tough to survive over a long haul as a third guy in this league," Stanton told Pro Football Weekly earlier this month. "I feel like I have a unique situation where I still have room to grow and learn stuff from the upper-echelon guys in this league that have established themselves ... like a Dallas, or something of that nature. Tony Romo has kind of ingrained himself as the starter, and it would be a great opportunity."

"Then you look at something like Tampa Bay, or New York, where I have more experience than those younger guys and (can) kind of maybe help them along, show them the ropes a little bit," Stanton added. "It's that fine line, but I think I can play both sides of the fence, which is exciting for me in looking at different teams that need something like that."

The 6-4, 225-pound  Schilens played for new wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal in Oakland. Although Schilens fits the profile of a tall and speedy wideout that the Jets’ were lacking, he’s had trouble staying healthy in the past.

Schilens, who played four seasons with the Raiders, missed 13 games from 2009-2010 due to injury. He has 72 career receptions and seven touchdowns.

“It was just too good a place to leave (without signing a contract)," Schilens said in a press release. "It was a combination of everything that impressed me. The two most important things were the mindset of the coaching staff on where the team is going, and the overall feeling of the commitment of the team to want to win with this great facility. I just always liked playing the Jets — it always seemed to be a big-time game. I always liked the type of players they have on their team. And I like Rex Ryan's mentality."

HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY

"Nelson is the cover Safety

"Nelson is the cover Safety we've been looking for and Landry is the big hitter causing fumbles and turnovers..."

For those streamers not familiar with Reggie Nelson, think Kerry Rhodes (during his best years with the Jets) without the Hollywood crap and with a relentless passion in hitting people.

A colleague texted me saying Nelson has signed and is a NY Jet. Maybe some streamers could verify this for me? I might have to kill that guy if he was just joking so I will consider his text a joke (until further notice) of course.

I don't let either Nelson or

I don't let either Nelson or Landry leave without contracts. Nothing makes more sense than to upgrade the safety position. Jets probably are set at the DL with the signing of Pouha. With the Thomas signing and the Maybin tender, Jets probably won't sign another LB until the Scott smoke clears and after that it will be a 2nd tier player (McLean (sp?) from the Ravens). CB position is set.

Draft an OL in round 1, a WR in round 2 and a RB in round 3.

If/when the Jets dispatch

If/when the Jets dispatch Scott, they will also sign JCo.

Cotch is visiting the Chiefs

Cotch is visiting the Chiefs on Monday & Tuesday, so they better get a move on.

I'm in your camp on this one,

I'm in your camp on this one, if he goes to KC, better the chance Edwards returns.

Time to chase the pot of Gold

Time to chase the pot of Gold on the other side of the rainbow,later...

Sign Nelson and I could deal

Sign Nelson and I could deal with Smith if we couldn't sign Landry.Landry has Achilles problems and has about four other teams possibly driving up his price...

Landry can be a difference

Landry can be a difference maker, Nelson will be solid. Landry will be considerably less expensive than a blue chip OLB. He'd be the 1 big ticket FA the team can sign.

We cold also snag a good

We cold also snag a good Safety in the Second rd. of the draft. Please, just sign Nelson and take from there...

could

could

The only thing that bothers

The only thing that bothers me is that there are a lot of different numbers out there on what cap space we actually have. I'm going with Jets Cap number since they are usually dead on...

I don't think cap space would

I don't think cap space would prevent them from signing both Nelson and Landry, I think it's Ryan cutting Smith.

I like Smith,he just was

I like Smith,he just was never a starter. He's meant for coming off the bench...

He's too slow to start and

He's too slow to start and too expensive as a reserve.

As per Jets Cap we currently

As per Jets Cap we currently have 13.1 in cap space before the current signings which are 2m. in total leaving us with 11m. to work with...Merriweather set the current market at 3m. for Safeties lets hope Nelson or/and Landry aren't above that mark...

GJ, You think the Jets are

GJ,

You think the Jets are actually contemplating signing both Nelson and Landry?

If like I posted they don't

If like I posted they don't exceed 3m. per,I could see it. Re-work Smith's deal or cut him loose..

Smith's deal has no dead

Smith's deal has no dead money so he could potentially be cut without a loss to the cap. He counts 2m. against we could draft a guy and save 1.5...

Which means they can cut or

Which means they can cut or trade Smith. I think Nelson will cost the same as Smith. Landry will be more expensive but they can massage that by giving him a longer term.

If they could sign both for

If they could sign both for under 6m.,I think that's the magic number. Nelson is the cover Safety we've been looking for and Landry is the big hitter causing fumbles and turnovers...

If Schilens signed for $1

If Schilens signed for $1 mil, than they have saved a net $2.5 at the 2nd WR position. Poole cost about $1 mil, so that covers Nelson. They cut Smith, they could sign Landry and be about net even on the cap.

Do you know what are the cap

Do you know what are the cap implications of cutting Smith?
