Organization and funding

Financial contours
The NanoLab NL programme covers a 80M€ investment over 5 years from the NanoImpuls (NI) programme, the NanoNed (NN) programme, and from the universities taking part.

Organization
The NanoLab NL organisation is managed by a steering committee with four members, plus representatives from the central NanoNed organisation, and Philips Research:

  • Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials Groningen: Siemon Bakker
  • MESA+: Miriam Luizink
  • Kavli Institute of Nanoscience: Emile van der Drift (chairman)
  • TNO Science & Industry: Wart Mandersloot, Michael Engelmann
  • Philips Research: Frank Dirne
  • NanoNed bureau: Léon Gielgens

Mode of operation
The long-term investment programmes NanoLab/Nanoimpuls (2003-2007) and NanoLab/NanoNed (2005-2009) constitute the frame for NanoLab NL to operate in. Yearly, an investment scheme is extracted from the long-term programmes for realisation in that particular year. Year plans includes both investment and matching parts, and are submitted for approval by the NanoNed board. To anticipate the natural dynamics of cutting-edge research, the partners have (limited) flexibility to deviate from the original investment scheme, based on open discussion with all partners. In addition, annual reports are prepared to provide an overview of the actual progress in NanoLab NL.

Future funding
By agreement the parties of NanoLab NL build up a reinvestment fund from their own capital to enable the continued build-up of vital nanotech equipment even after the closure of the overall NanoNed and NanoImpuls programmes. As a rule 1% of a given NanoLab NL investment from the subsidy part per year for the period of 10 years will be allocated for reinvestment. It implies cumulative growth of this fund to the amount of 10% of the total investment.
