Last week we told you that Activision and franchise lead developer Beenox would be officially announcing the next "Spider-Man" game at this weekend's WonderCon in San Francisco. Apparently, they were all just to excited about the new game to wait. And so today brings the announcement of "Spider-Man: Edge of Time," a follow-up of sorts to last year's solid Spidey continuity jumper, "Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions" (pictured).
"Edge of Time" has the wall-crawler facing "one of his greatest challenges ever - saving Spider-Man." Much like "Shattered Dimensions," the new game will jump back and forth between different Spidey story continuities that have been established in the comics. The previous game spanned four different threads; "Edge of Time" only covers two: Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2099. The two Peter Parkers will be working to "correct a timestream gone awry and prevent a catastrophic future brought on by the early and untimely death of Peter Parker."
Bummer.
"At Beenox, we are constantly listening to the fans and looking for new and creative ways to innovate the gameplay experience for them," Beenox studio head Dee Brown said in the press release. "We want to create a totally distinct experience in 'Spider-Man: Edge of Time' by working with Peter David on the story and creating this urgent, high-stakes experience where time is working against you and the fate of Spider-Man hangs in the balance."
David is an established Marvel Comics writer and the co-creator of the "Spider-Man 2099" comic book series, which also factored into the story of "Shattered Dimensions." There's no gameplay detailed in the release of than the new "cause-and-effect" gameplay, in which ""players will see how the immediate and sometimes unexpected effects of their actions as one Spider-Man changes the timeline of the other Spider-Man."
"Spider-Man: Edge of Time" is set for release this fall. No platform is specified, but it's a safe bet that it will at least be coming to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, if not the Wii and portable gaming devices.
