Billy Ray Cyrus 'Mending' His Family After Bad Week
Billy Ray Cyrus has recovered from a recent bout of foot-in-mouth disease, telling
PEOPLE he's "mending" his family after saying in a
much-maligned interview that he was "scared" for his daughter Miley and blames Disney's 'Hannah Montana' for tearing down his family.
Cyrus conceded that his GQ interview was "explosive, and unintentionally so." He adds, "My family is the most important thing I have, and we are working together to make sure our future is stronger and healthier."
In the lengthy profile, Cyrus blamed the Disney show for the current trouble in his family, including his divorce from wife Tish. "I hate to say it, but yes, I do. I'd take it back in a second," he said of the show.
He also said he worries about the people surrounding his daughter, who are tasked with helping her make career decisions.
"I'm scared for her," he said. "She's got a lot of people around her that's putting her in a great deal of danger. I want to get her sheltered from the storm."
The comments set off a firestorm and apparently deepened his rift with Miley, who
reportedly vetoed Billy Ray's planned appearance on 'The View' on Wednesday out of concern he would be coaxed into opening up too much again.
With a week to think about what he's done, Cyrus is now trying to reconcile his relationship with his daughter and asks that everyone give them the time and space to do it.
"It is all a learning process, and we thank everyone for their support and respect of our privacy as we sort through very important family issues," he tells PEOPLE.
He adds, "It is very important to me to work on mending my family right now."

Billy, Billy,,,button your shirt, stop wearing tight jeans, take off all of that jewlery around your neck. Shave that thing off of your CHIN, and GET A HAIR CUT. You have looked silly for years now, its time to grow up. All of that was alright during the ackey breaky years, but those years are long past.

You couldn't've put it any better YellowRose. Guy looks like an absurd emo rodeo clown. The achey breaky years are long long past. I s'pose he gets royalties from his one hit and continues to make appearances and all that, but still at some point try to move on.

Billy Ray Cyrus is not "washed up". Have a little respect. He was a celebrity before his daughter. I would venture a guess that it was Miley who rode on her father's celebrity to get her show with Disney.

Miley's 18 now...and now you speak up! You should have been parenting her all along instead of letting her fame and fortune cloud your judgment. You should have put you foot down when she was 15 and posed practically nude for Vanity Fair magazine. You let her change her legal name from Destiny Hope to "Miley." Really?? You seem to have let her do what the hell she wanted to do and now you're fearful...well you should be. You helped create the monster now you have to deal with it. She's 18 now and considered an adult, legally anyway. Now that there is no more Hannah Montana, it's just a matter of time before she begins seeking negative publicity, then she'll be a REAL mess because she won't be relevant or in the limelight anymore.

Miley got a shot because of her Dad being in the business. She would never had made it without him. She would have just been another contestant on "American Idol". Billy and his wife need to be her PARENTS, not her friend. She seems to think that since her career became bigger than her Dad's, that she is in charge. What a spoiled little brat. She is on the same path that Lindsay Lohan took, and we all know how that turned out. So...some day she may end up in the same cell and it will be HER fault. Trailer Trash is as Trailer Trash does.
