The view is toward the southeast, from a viewpoint over the location of Sandpoint, ID. On the left, the glacier is moving up the Clark Fork valley and Glacial Lake Missoula is in the distance. In the upper right, the glacier fills the deepest part of the Lake Pend Oreille basin and terminates near what is now Farragut State Park. In the lower right, the glacier is moving into the drainage of the Pend Oreille River.

When the dam failed, the main outburst was through the Lake Pend Oreille basin, across the site of the state park and then into Rathdrum Prairie, roaring toward present-day Spokane. A number of graphics presented to the public mistakenly show the main outburst taking the Pend Oreille River route.
