Will Visual C++ Express 2010 include compiler for 64-bit? Or still "C++ Express = no 64-bit development"

Could you elucidate on "Team Foundation Server is now included in all versions of Visual Studio 2010."

Does this mean TFS client licenses are now available to all version of VS 2010 (except, I presume, Express?) Does this mean, you now only need to purchase a TFS server (assuming TFS Basic isn't sufficient) for those of us without the cash to purchase the high end MSDN offerings?

I am extremely interested in TFS Basic, especially since our current version control provider flaked out with their latest release. Unless it is missing some core functionality, TFS Basic would be perfect for our needs (especially since the internal requirement that we support Linux clients has been quietly dropped.) Management will be justifiably upset that we flushed over $12,000 down the drain, so I'd need to really line everything up, but if TFS Basic is less than our license renewal, they'll be happy again.

Where does windows mobile development fit in?  Hopefully, express editions will be included this time.

All versions of Visual Studio 2010 that include an MSDN Subscription will also include a client & server license for TFS. You will be able to install this either on your client machine (very similar to client side SCM such as VSS) or on a server machine just like TFS 2008.

Great release! I can't wait to evaluate this stuff. TFS, .Net 4 and VS have come a long way.

I have to express some disapointment though. Yes the sku's were simplified but I really wish there was just one.

The price is too high. It's a barrier for many small comapnies that can use free tools. The features I find most interesting, test and lifecycle management, all require Ultimate. Same goes for Web and Load testing. If it wasn't for tools such as ReSharper or CodeRush I would never use VS as my editor.

Anyway, just a request that you further simplify the product line and lower the cost barrier.

Daren, there is Channel 9 movie explaining setup of VS 2010 Beta 2. It explains that Beta 2 does have a go-live license.

The TFS installer includes the 'Basic' install option which can be installed on a client OS.

The simplified product lineup eliminates the Standard edition.  No upgrade price is listed for the Professional edition.  Effectively, the new product lineup appears to be a 400% price increase for anyone who needs the Standard edition.  Don't you think this kind of price increase deserves at least a little explanation?

Team Foundation Server 2010 will be included in the MSDN subscription that comes with Visual Studio 2010 Professional, Premium, Ultimate, and Test Elements. This copy of Team Foundation Server in licensed for unlimited development and test use (as is all MSDN software) and licensed for one production deployment. These MSDN subscriptions also include one CAL.

Team Foundation Server has three installation choices - Basic, Advanced and Custom.

Team Foundation Server will also be available in retail for around $500 USD and will include a license term allowing up to five (5) named users without CALs to use Team Foundation Server. To grow to more than five users, simply buy CALs for the new users. This enables small teams of five or fewer to get up and running on Team Foundation Server for as little as $500 USD.

Of course having Visual Studio 2010 with MSDN means you can get Team Foundation Server up and running at no additional cost.

I like the overhaul a lot so far!

Everything on MSDN feels a lot cleaner than it used to be, and it is nice to FINALLY see some actual personality on the webpages!  (I loved the 'This is no namby-pamby beta.' line on the VS2010b2 download page)

Really looking forward to giving the new font rendering and LayoutRounding in WPF4 a spin.  This is shaping up to be quite an excellent release!

As a Microsoft Gold Certified partner with ISV competency (amongst others), we had permission to have one instance of TFS 2008 running with about 25 CALs of the VSTS 2008 Team Development edition. Since Microsoft merged the Development and Database edition we could also make use of the Database edition.

Now that there is a new product line up, how will that influence our current licensing situation?

Where do we find back the Dev and DB edition and what's with the Tester and Architect edition? Will those be included in a package we can use due to our company status right away now?

Hi bobrik,

The C++ Express product won't support x64 "out-of-the-box" but that's mainly to save on the download size. The subsequent Windows SDK will contain all the 64-bit libraries and tools and will light up the Express IDE when you install it.

What about users like myself who have an active Visual Studio Team System 2008 Development Edition with MSDN Premium subscription with Software Assurance, will my subscription also automatically transition to Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate with MSDN when Visual Studio 2010 RTMs?

Anyone know of a download location that supports resume?

Just had my download fail after 1GB... at which point I am reminded that most of the MSDN file servers don't support download resuming!

Features wise VS 2010 look promising but why you people suddenly started changing logos for all products. I have been using Visual Studio + MSDN since 1996 and what I have notice is the NEW LOGO design/color are very poor compare to existing one. I think, before changing mainstream features, UI & UX, MS should have conducted a survey to get the feedback from the people who are using these products around the world. These new logos are not giving stand-out impression as previous one. I am sure none of the customers may have asked MS to CHANGE logos & MSDN UX!

Can you do the impossible and delight us by making RTM available on DreamSpark the same day as TechNet and MSDN? Or will we have to wait for months again?

I'd like to add to what David Jacobson said and voice my concern with you dropping Standard edition. Express editions don't currently support add-ins or packages, i.e. cannot be extended at all, whereas Standard edition could. I can install Standard edition, install a few add-ins and get a very nice env going. We are now forced into high priced and often unjustified upgrade path, especially in this tough economic times. Offering a limited time upgrade is just a temp solution and doesn't address the fundamental problem of not having a good entry level env, one that can be extended. I use Pro version at work but need Standard one at home. I suggest you reconsider while you have a chance. Give developers more choices, not less.

I must admit I was hoping that covariance and contravariance wast at least implemented on the IEnumerable<T> for this release. Is there any chance we can get those bits before the final release?

Will VS 2010 Beta 2 support MS Surface development out-of-box?  Will there be videos on how to develop Surface apps with VS 2010?  TIA.

Ignacio: IEnumerable<T> is covariant in Beta2.  You can check out the documentation below for more details.  Is there some particular behavior you're noticing that would indicate variance is broken with IEnumerable?

I echo the comments about an ISO.  The public download page only lets you download the web installer.  I would like to download at work (where I have a nice fast connection), put the ISO on a USB stick and take it home to install.

Please let NON MSDN subscriber to download ISO image! Thank you. (Why this web installer... useless setup...)

Why doesn't it support Windows Mobile development?

Sadly the product crashes for me on startup with an annoying "The application cannot start." error. I have already filed a report at Microsoft Connect:

I have almost exactly the same problem as Michael. The first time I run the product, I can create an MFC project. It won't edit any source files those with a "Can't open xxxx" error. After I shut down, I can no longer start the application with "The application cannot start." error.

(Oh, I was able to edit the really, really annoying and oh so useless ReadMe.txt file. The editor was slow, cumbersome and ugly.

Finally, the color scheme and UI design really stinks. Please rehire your talented usability experts.)
