For some children a tutor is essential as they are off school with a long-term health problem. Occasionally, families who are travelling for an extended period take a tutor with them to keep junior’s brain ticking over. Others need someone to maintain schoolwork during a difficult period – an exclusion or a family break-up. School-aged film stars have their own tutors who keep them up to speed in between takes.

ChildrenFinding tutors is no easy task. A number of tutor companies claim they can guide you to the ideal tutor but how do you choose between them?  Some tutorial companies are run from sitting rooms and work with only 20–30 tutors. Some have extensive offices and may have 2,000 tutors on their books.

Some are trying not to expand, relish long-term, close relationships with clients and tutors and acquire both solely by personal recommendation. Others are busily trying to meet a voracious demand and are wildly recruiting in all directions.
