Prime Minister Visits Oxford

The Prime Minister, The Rt Hon Gordon Brown MP, visited Oxford University on Friday 27th February to deliver the Romanes lecture on Science and our Economic Future. Stressing the importance of scientific research and of science as a way out of the global economic crisis, the Prime Minister pledged to maintain the government's investment in science and to double the number of state school pupils taking triple science by 2014. He also toured various University facilities, including the new Biochemistry building, where he was briefed by Professor Ilan Davis, Senior Research Fellow in Biochemistry at Jesus College. OxNosh

Kat Emmett, a former Chemistry student at Jesus College, has launched a web site called OxNosh, detailing everything you want to know about food, and food in Oxford. You can find recipes, tips on the basics of cooking, advice on healthy eating, guides to the good food shops and restaurants in Oxford, and simple overviews of current issues such as organic food. The site was launched with the aid of the Antony Fletcher Innovation Fund.

Sporting Achievements

The Jesus-Exeter women's rugby team have yet again won Cuppers (Rugby 7s), beating a team of graduates from a number of colleges 5-3 in a thrilling final.

Last term, the Jesus men's hockey team rose to first place in the University's top hockey league.

WJEC Student of the Year

Elliot Crowley, a first-year Engineering Science student at Jesus College, has been named by the WJEC as Student of the Year 2008 for achieving the highest UMS score of all candidates in all subjects. Elliot, formerly of Bassaleg School, Newport, received his award at a ceremony on 15th December in Cardiff Bay.

The Handel Blog

Dr Suzanne Aspden, Fellow in Music at Jesus College, is one of four experts and advocates writing blogs as part of BBC Radio 3's Composers of the Year 2009 series, celebrating the lives and work of Purcell, Handel, Haydn and Mendelssohn.
