WASHINGTON DC, November 18, 2008 – World Wildlife Fund (WWF) will host “Biofuels: Which Are More Sustainable?” on November 19-20, 2008, this year’s Kathryn Fuller Science for Nature Symposium. The symposium will present the “state of the science” with regard to biofuels and their impacts on biodiversity, the environment, greenhouse gas emissions, and food supply and will build consensus among scientists, conservation practitioners, investors, and policy makers regarding key impacts and acceptable performance.
Biofuels have been hailed as the solution to the environmental problems created by the use of fossil fuels. A closer look, however, has begun to reveal significant– and at times alarming– impacts of this rapidly emerging industry. We need common metrics to compare the impacts of producing biofuels, define acceptable impacts, and create acceptable standards. The 2008 Science for Nature Symposium is convening at a time when the need for credible alternative energies is becoming more urgent. The policy, science, business and conservation communities need to understand the global implications of our choices.
During the symposium, experts will share their research findings and insights. Each speaker will also address the following questions:
- Where is there general agreement about the topic?
- Where is there little or contradictory information?
- What science is most urgently needed about this topic?
- How should we prioritize future research?
