The New Zealand Geographic Place Names Database includes details such as location (latitude and longitude) and spelling of place names included in LINZ's topographic data. There is also a dataset available to download.

Exclude any geographic name extensions such as: (name) "bay" or (name) "river" as the names will not necessarily be recorded in the database with this extension.

You can also search street and place names by using LINZ's electoral streets and places data or find out more about Antarctic place names.

Macrons for Māori names are not displayed in the database due to technical limitations. The New Zealand Geographic Board compiles lists of official place names with macrons to assist in mapping, signage, reporting, legislation, or other official documents.
