Adult Modern Dance

Adult Modern Dance

Summer Modern Dance Intensive
Featuring Sherry Saterstrom and Mel Claridge
July 16, 2007 through August 10, 2007

Modern Dance Intensive workshops focus on technique, composition, and improvisation. Enroll in one or both two week sessions, either for credit or personal enrichment. Our guest instructors bring years of educational, professional and performance experience to our workshops.

Sherry Saterstrom will teach from July 16 – 27.

Sherry Saterstrom

Sherry is a lively, energetic teacher who, through improvisation, challenges our notions of dance and where it should be performed. To counter her wild side, she is also certified as a Body-Mind Centering practitioner. Never one to sit still, Sherry is a mover and a shaker in both the educational and professional arenas of dance in the Midwest.

After completing a masters degree in dance/humanities at Arizona State University, she danced away the years in elementary, junior high, and high schools as a solo artist and with her company Dance Co’Motion (1979 - 84). She also has enjoyed performing with such noted dance artists as Bill T. Jones, Maria Cheng, and Dancers, Paula Mann, Lovice Weller and Cindy Stephens.

Sherry has a particular passion for improvisation in movement technique and performance and created The Improvisation Ensemble, an improvisation performance company that challenges notions of where dance should be viewed with an intent to discover new things about ourselves as movers and as human beings. Since 1984 Sherry has concentrated her work in the area of body-mind studies as they relate to dance/movement and the process of learning.

She is a certified Body-Mind Centering practitioner and includes Laban/Bartenieff, Todd/Sweigard, Zen meditation, tai chi, authentic movement, and yoga in her movement practice.

Mel Claridge will teach from July 30 – August 10.

Mel Claridge

Presently Mel is an assistant professor at the University of Wyoming, where he teaches all levels of modern dance, jazz and ballroom. He is a graduate of Brigham Young University and is one of the most versatile teachers we know. While at Brigham Young University he performed with The Dancers’ Company, Dancensemble, Ballroom Dance Company, and Theatre Ballet.

His dances have been presented on several ACDF Gala performances. He has a master's degree where he performed with The Dancers’ Company, Dancensemble, Ballroom Dance Company and Theatre Ballet. He has also performed professionally with Jazzin’ and he directed his own company The Art of Jazz.

For ten years he directed the modern dance program at BYU Idaho and toured his work extensively throughout the world with Extravadance.
A choreographer extraorinaire, Mel has choreographed works that have been presented at regional American College Dance Festivals, many of them chosen for gala concerts. “Hytara,” choreographed while he was at BYU Idaho, was chosen to be performed at the National festival the first junior college work chosen for such an honor.
