PM offers train crash help

PRIME Minister John Howard has offered Victorians whatever help they need following the "heartbreaking" rural train crash which has claimed at least eight lives.

At least eight people were killed and 24 injured when a truck collided with a passenger train about six kilometres north of Kerang, on the Murray Valley Highway.

Mr Howard offered his condolences and promised to make available any assistance the Victorian government needed.

"Like all Australians I was deeply saddened to hear the news of the tragic accident in regional Victoria today,'' the Prime Minister said.

"It is heartbreaking.

"On behalf of the Government, Janette and I express our profound sympathy and condolence for those who have lost family and friends in this terrible accident.''

The Government has already offered the services of the Australian Transport Safety Bureau to help with any investigation.

"If the Victorian Government requires any further assistance from the Commonwealth, it will be made available,'' Mr Howard said.

Opposition Leader Kevin Rudd said he was saddened and shocked by the news of the train crash.

"The news that at least eight people have died, with many more severely injured, is heartbreaking,'' he said.

"My thoughts and prayers tonight are with those still fighting for their life in hospitals throughout Victoria.''

Mr Rudd sympathised with the trauma being experienced by the tight-knit communities in north-west Victoria.

"I have no doubt that every Australian will spare a thought and a prayer for all the families and communities whose lives have been touched by this terrible tragedy,'' he said.

"Country Victorians will have to call on all the strength and courage for which they are famous to overcome the sadness and heartbreak of this crash.

"They have the support and prayers of the nation in this terrible task.''
