Centenary of The National Library of Wales 2007


Centenary Logo

2007 is a very important year in the history of The National Library of Wales, as we celebrate the centenary of receiving our first Royal Charter in 1907. It is a great opportunity to look back over a century of valuable service, and also to look forward into the next century and beyond. The Library has arranged a wide-ranging programme of events for 2007, offering something of interest to everyone.

 

 



 


Monthly Lectures


In addition to the highly popular lunchtime lectures given in the Drwm (on the first Wednesday of each month), we have introduced lunchtime film viewings on the third Wednesday of each month.

Centenary flagWe hoist our centenary flags above the Library. These will be flown for the duration of the centenary year except when official occasions are marked with national flags.

Gwyneth Lewis
Library Open Day
. Join well known poet Gwyneth Lewis, National Poet of Wales 2005-6, for a children's poetry workshops in the morning at 11.00 am (aged 8-10), followed by poetry readings by Gwyneth at 2.00 pm. A series of tours around the Library will be conducted highlighting different aspects of our collections and work. Various additional children's activities will be held throughout the day. BBC weatherman Derek Brockway will join us at 3.00 pm in the Pen Dinas restaurant, and there will be an opportunity to meet him, obtain a signed copy of his latest book 'Weatherman Walking', and enjoy a cup of tea.


1 March 2007. Book Day.


Lecture in Welsh by Dr Rhidian Griffiths 'A city built on a hill: the century of The National Library of Wales'. Seminar series, at the Centre for Advanced Welsh & Celtic Studies, University of Wales, Aberystwyth, 5.00 pm.

Our Education Department will also hold workshops on the theme 'Journey of the Book', aimed at primary school pupils.

A television programme Defodau Dewi Sant will be broadcast on S4C. The programme will feature The Penpont Antiphonal, which is one of the Library's medieval manuscript treasures. The programme will consist of a performance of this rarely heard music manuscript, in celebration of St David, our National Patron Saint.

Centenary Day. The Library will send greetings to the National Libraries of the world, composed especially by Gwyneth Lewis, National Poet of Wales 2005-6. In the afternoon celebrations will be held for Library staff.


In This PlaceOfficial opening of the Library's centenary exhibition, In This Place, by Dr R Brinley Jones, President of The National Library of Wales, at The National Library of Wales at 2.30 pm. Later in the afternoon celebrations will be held for Library staff. In the evening the Library's new floodlights will be switched on.


Glaniad Launching of Glaniad - a new website that recounts the history of the Welsh settlements in Patagonia, at an exhibition opening relating to Patagonia, in Cardiff City Hall, 4.00 pm in the presence of the Rt. Hon. Rhodri Morgan, First Minister of the Welsh Assembly Government and Sr. Mario Das Neves, Govenor of Chubut.

Trevor FishlockBBC Wales will be broadcasting four weekly documentary television programmes, Tales from The National Library, relating to The National Library of Wales, its history and treasures. The programmes will be presented by Trevor Fishlock.

Latvia Launch of exhibition CLIC: Visualising Wales / Delweddu Cymru at the National Library of Latvia, in Riga. CLIC is the first collaborative project to be developed as a result of contact instigated between The National Library of Wales and Latvia. The project is mainly visual in its content, comprising photography by four staff members of The National Library of Wales. The exhibition will be held from 5 April to 3 May 2007.

The Urdd National Eisteddfod. Adjacent National Library of Wales and National Museum Wales presence on the Eisteddfod field. The National Library of Wales is sponsoring the Chairing ceremony, held on Thursday 31 May. An unique opportunity to support young poets of the future. Also on Thursday at 11.30 in the Library pavilion on the eisteddfod field, Mererid Hopwood will launch our centenary volume Yn y Lle Hwn.

The Sir John Williams Lecture, delivered by Dr R Brinley Jones, President of The National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth, held in the North Reading Room of the Library, together with reception. Launch of a special Gwasg Gregynog limited edition publication featuring the Library's 2007 commissioned poems by Gwyneth Lewis.

Royal Welsh Logo The Library is planning a joint presence with National Museum Wales at the Royal Welsh Agricultural Show, Builth Wells.

The Library will hold a joint promotional stand with National Museum Wales at the National Eisteddfod of Wales, Flintshire 2007. The 2007 Crown, designed by the Llanelli-based jeweller Mari Thomas, will be jointly presented by The National Library of Wales and National Museum Wales, on Monday 6 August.

Film Festival: Wales Screen Classics
: The National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales and the Aberystwyth Arts Centre join forces to further the Library's centenary celebrations. Screenings will be held at both venues.

The Friends of The National Library of Wales visit National Museum Wales.

Lens 3. People and Portraits.  Festival of Welsh Documentary Photography. The third annual conference of this highly successful event, for everyone who has an interest in photography in Wales, held at The National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth.


December 2007

Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales logo
Plans to assist with the launch of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales 2008 centenary celebrations to be held at The National Library of Wales.

During the centenary year various radio programmes which highlight the Library will be broadcast. BBC Radio Cymru will broadcast the series Dweud Cyfrolau, presented by Hywel Gwynfryn (2 January 2007). BBC Radio Wales will broadcast the series Shelf Life, presented by Trevor Fishlock (1 February 2007). BBC Radio 4 will broadcast a programme featuring poetry in the Library's collections in its series Great Libraries (March 2007), presented by Joan Bakewell. Radio Ceredigion will also broadcast a series of eight 50-minute programmes, which will feature staff members discussing the Library and its work.

During the centenary year celebrations, a plaque will be erected on the Old Assembly Rooms, Aberystwyth, to commemorate the site where The National Library of Wales was first situated.

A series of touring exhibitions based on The National Library of Wales will be held at various public libraries throughout Wales. These will include Wrexham, Merthyr Tydfil, Pembrokeshire and Gwynedd.
