NEW DELHI: Rajesh Ranjan, also known as Pappu Yadav, an independent candidate, emerged victorious with 5,67,556 votes, securing a margin of 23,847 votes over his nearest rival. Santosh Kumar from the Janata Dal (United) party came in second place with 5,43,709 votes.
Bima Bharti from the Rashtriya Janata Dal secured 27,120 votes, trailing the winner by 5,40,436 votes.Arun Das from the Bahujan Samaj Party received 10,619 votes, while independent candidates Satyendra Yadav and Noman Alam obtained 8,459 and 7,693 votes, respectively. Kishor Kumar Yadav from the All India Forward Bloc secured 6,854 votes.
The "None of the Above" (NOTA) option received 23,834 votes, which was 5,43,722 votes less than the winning candidate's tally.
In the Lok Sabha elections of 2024, Purnia constituency went to the polls on April 26 as part of phase 2. Situated in Bihar, Purnia constitutes one of the 40 parliamentary seats in the state, holding a general category parliamentary seat status and boasting a literacy rate of 40.96%.

In the 2019 elections, Santosh Kumar of the Janata Dal (United) emerged victorious with 632,435 votes, securing 54.8% of the votes. The runner-up was Uday Singh Alias Pappu Singh of the Indian National Congress, who secured 369,278 votes, accounting for 32% of the votes.

In the 2014 elections, Santosh Kumar of the Janata Dal (United) won the Lok Sabha election by securing 418,717 votes, capturing 41.6% of the votes. The runner-up was Uday Singh Alias Pappu Singh of the Bharatiya Janata Party, who secured 301,979 votes, accounting for 30% of the votes.
According to the 2011 Census, around 14.3% of the voters belong to the Scheduled Caste (SC) category, and around 5.9% belong to the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category. Muslim voters comprise around 23.3% of the electorate, based on voter list analysis.According to the 2011 Census, the rural population dominates the voter list, constituting around 87% of the electorate, in contrast to urban voters, who make up around 13%. During the 2019 Parliamentary Election, Purnia witnessed a voter turnout of 60.3%.
