'Ox Pasture'

'Ox Pasture', the Salem Howe Wales estate built c. 1880 and later enlarged by Carrere & Hastings in Southampton.  Wales was a partner and managing editor of Scientific American magazine, president of the New York City's Park Commission and New York City's Dock Commission, and founder and trustee of the Hahnemann Hospital, the New York Homeopathic Medical College and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  His daughter was married to Elihu Root who also had a residence by Carrere & Hastings nearby named 'Mayfair'.  'Ox Pasture' is no longer extant.

'Mayfair'

'Mayfair', the Elihu Root estate designed by Carrere & Hastings c. 1896 in Southampton.  Root, an attorney and prominent politician, served in various political functions including Secretary of War (1899-1904), Secretary of State (1905-1909) and U.S. Senator from New York (1909-1915).  He was also an author and trustee at major NYC institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the New York Public Library.  Click HERE to see 'Mayfair' on google earth and HERE on bing.

'Linden Hill'

 'Linden Hill', the Richard Flint Howe estate designed by Carrere & Hastings c. 1915 (with alterations in 1917 and 1927) in Brookville.  Howe was married to Abby Deering, daughter of William Deering of the Deering Harvester Company, later the International Harvester Company.  He was a partner, secretary, treasurer and director at the International Harvester Co.  His son William Deering Howe resided at 'Highpool', also by Carrere & Hastings c. 1926 at the northern end of the property (now Long Island Lutheran High School).  Howe's brother-in-law James Deering owned 'Vizcaya' in Miami.  'Linden Hill' burned down c. 1970 after becoming the Tam O'Shanter Club, click HERE to see on google earth.  Click HERE to see the still extant outbuildings to the estate on bing which appear to be a separate residence.  Click HERE to see a 1966 aerial shot of the property.

'Longfields'

 'Longfields', the William Payne Thompson Jr. estate designed by Carrere & Hastings c. 1910 in Old Westbury.  The estate was inherited by Thompson's nephew William Payne Thompson Preston Sr. in the early 1930s and these photos are courtesy of his daughter, Elizabeth Preston Hutchings.  The estate was sold to Ambrose Clark in the 1940s and the house was eventually demolished so Clark could incorporate the property into his adjacent estate 'Broad Hollow House'.  Click HERE for more on 'Longfields' and HERE to see the estate ruins as they look today.

'Burrwood'

'Burrwood', the Walter Jennings estate designed by Carrere & Hastings c. 1899 in Cold Spring Harbor. 'Woodfold'

 'Woodfold', the Robert Scott Lovett estate designed by Carrere & Hastings c. 1911 in Lattingtown.  Lovett, an attorney, was general counsel and later president of the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific Rail Roads.  Lovett also had Carrere & Hastings design a stable, farmhouse and gardner's cottage as well as alterations to the main residence in 1915 and 1925.  The estate's subsequent owner, Albert Henry Diebold, founder of Neuralgyline Co., had C&H design alterations in 1927.  The estate was later owned by Diebold's son Trevor Diebold.  'Woodfold' was demolished sometime in the late 1940s.  Click HERE to see where 'Woodfold' stood and HERE to see the entrance gates to the estate.  The stable seen in the photo below that sat across from the entrance to the house are extant, click HERE to see the site on bing.

'Ontare'

'Ontare', the James Alonzo Blair Sr. estate designed by Carrere & Hastings c. 1910 in Oyster Bay Cove. G. Clinton Mackenzie designed the estate's barns. Blair was a founding partner of the investment banking firm of Blair & Co. The interior of the house has since been split into two homes and continues to function that way today. 'Bagatelle'

'Bagatelle', the Thomas Hastings estate designed by himself (of Carrere & Hastings) c. 1908 in Old Westbury. This was the first incarnation of 'Bagatelle' that would go on to burn down but Hastings would rebuild to the same specifications in 1913.
