Depecheowie

From the CD vaults I found this crazy mash-up called Depecheowie.  Sprinkling some Bowie instrumentals with some Depeche Mode loops. A very unlikely marriage.  This was the time when I had a Dell computer and  was experimenting using separate sound files  composed of breaks and edits. I would splice them up to create loops and record them on external mic in front of the speakers for the final mix. I bit obsolete by today's standards I mus say but still sounds nice. Enjoy

Sound & Vision: Glamjack's In Memoriam "Re-Visioned" Remix

Here is a homage remix to the great David Bowie featuring Kodo's "Zoku Japanese Drums".  I had this idea I wanted to add some type of marching drums to this stripped down version of "Sound & Vision". Also, there are other added elements as well.  Enjoy!

David Bowie's Best Dance Songs

I had to make peace with the reality that this genius musical artist has left us too soon. So what better way than to list my best David Bowie dance songs that can make me break down and cry! See you in the cosmos!

We begin with "Let's Spend The Night together". It is a great fast pace rock foot stomping classic that always amazes.

then here is the  haunting and dramatic Owellian inspired song filled with power and always makes me want to move:

Just as good and hard and as the disco version period.

Needs no explanation!

An ode to the DJ's of the world! Beautiful

This is one of the New Romantic anthems for all the dance floors of past and present

Traaaansmission.....need I say more

Oh and this one is pretty much the cosmic disco version of the original. Brilliant!

This one never cease to amaze. Pure brilliance! One of my favorites. The break here is Balearic magic.

This one is a stunner. Hard to pin point but to me,  this is a sweet and countrified journey. A dance classic in my book!

Of course this the major one that could never have happened without Nile Rogers! An indisputable dance classic!

and this is the other monster dance classic from the same era!

The 90's version has more punch yet keeping the integrity of the original

This one is an interesting '90's take on the original classic. It has grown on me through out the years!

This Pet Shop Boys production designed to please  the hardcore gay boys at the clubs!

James Murphy did an amazing remix here with Bowie's 2013 brilliant comeback album The Next Day.  This remix brought me full New Romanticism circle by adding sections from "Ashes to Ashes".

and pretty much everything from Young Americans, even the slow ones where Bowie merged beautifully soul and the Philadelphia sound from the title track to "Fascination" and  "Right which is t is one of my all time favorite to close any night of dancing.

and I of course this list  wouldn't be complete with "Young Americans". This was a live version from the Dick Cavett show from 1974.  Pure brilliance!

Other songs that deserve to be on this list but made it very difficult for me  to choose, so I will call it

R.I.P Beautiful Alien: David Bowie 1947-2016

Loss of words and sad for one of the greatest, a true legend and a one of a kind artist/genius/pioneer has left us to another galaxy.  I just finished listening to "Blackstar". Wow! My heart goes out his friends and family. See you on the next plane my beautiful alien.

R.I.P. Steve Strange

'80's British icon, born in Welsh sadly passed away today. He was a true original who created a new look and sound during the early part of that decade.  Strange formed the band Visage,  he also appeared in Bowie's video "Ashes to Ashes" while he was the host with the most at the seminal and famous London nightclub " The Blitz" where he originated the New Romantics movement which became the backbone of the British new wave "invasion" that took over pop music during the most part of the '80s inspiring several of the big names in music of that amazing time in music where art, fashion and music melded with such beauty and purity.   Here is a sample of his brilliance that pretty much became my soundtrack   of self discovery while growing up in south Louisiana.  You will be missed and your legacy will live on forever, thank you Mr. Strange. RIP

The Next Day: Extra

By far the best album of the year is clearly David Bowie's The Next Day.  After ten years in hiatus, the beauty, purity and longevity of his twenty fourth studio release that came unannounced during his sixty sixth birthday was pure genius with a collection of songs all bound to be classics. Tony Visconti produced it and recreated the magic that pretty much changed the face of music.  Extra has just been released with five new songs and two remixes.  Here is the remix of "Love is Lost" by non other than DFA's James Murphy. Pure brilliance!

Going Kaputt

Snow day in the city today and so far this is the best new release of 2011! This masterpiece is  the perfect antidote for those cold winter days and it's delivered by Canadian singer/poet/songwriter Dan Bejar.  Bejar has been on the scene since 1995 releasing interesting music meshing blues, folk and glam which has led him to be sporadically compared to David Bowie by sharing the same great songwriting and unique incorporation of  lyrics/vocals.   Kaputt is his ninth LP under the Destroyer moniker fusing spacey electronics to acid jazz inspired by the music of Bryan Ferry and Gil Evans.  There are so many great songs in this release that it was difficult to choose one and settled with the emblematic and gorgeous "Song For America".  Joined by Vancouver native Sibel Thrasher on vocals, whose vocals are used beautifully and consistently on this entire record.  "Song For America" is clearly his take on retro funk with amazing lines  like "winter, spring, summer, and fall, animals crawl towards death's embrace"and easily could be the catchiest song to date.  All nine tracks are stunning including the remarkable  "Suicide Demo for Kara Walker", "Downtown" and "Bay Of Pigs" to name a few.   It is evident the new revisionist movement of  80's soft rock, synth and jazz is gaining momentum and it will make an even bigger splash this year with bands such as Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti  fronting this new pop movement.  Personally, upon first listening, I thought of the late Malcolm McLaren during his Paris period and of course Neal Tenant from Pet Shop Boys.  This record left me speechless and I highly recommend it!

Right

I have been wanting to post something by one of my favorite performers of all time and interestingly enough, last night while I was out hanging out at the Metropolitan Bar, I heard an amazing DJ work the turntables by mixing amazing songs back to back between Berlin era Bowie and late '70s Talking Heads.  I was stunned to realize how this is 20th century music and it still sounds incredible timeless and dance friendly. It felt so 'Right' to dance to it and it feels so 'Right' to post this one today.   Although this song is not exactly Berlin era Bowie but more of a Philly soul influence, it blended nicely with his late '70s stuff.  "Right" is from Young Americans, his eight album released in 1975 on RCA Records.  With this LP, Bowie made a sudden and jolting step in a new direction, shedding his glam rock past and exploring Philadelphia soul with backing from a pre-fame Luther Vandross.  Young Americans contained his first number one hit in the U.S.,  "Fame" co-written with John Lennon (who also contributed backing vocals), and work from Carlos Alomar, who would eventually work with Bowie on ten more studio albums. Enjoy

September Mix

September is here and it always feels like an intense month.  Seasons change, historical  events and/or defining moments seem to fall around this time whether catastrophic ones or just time defining.  September seems to stand for a time for change as well.   This mix here reflects a myriad of feelings and musical reflections that seem to be somehow disjointed yet harmonious.  Some of he musical selections are rather obtuse.  I can only say that this mix has a life of his own.  Enjoy!

Criminal World

Here is a song that I never seem to get out my mind.  It's hard to believe that this song is from 1977 with  lyrics and arrangements that sound so poignant and current. "Criminal World" is a song written by Duncan Browne, Peter Godwin and Sean Lyons of the band Metro from their debut self titled album in 1977.  David Bowie recorded it in 1983 for the album Let's Dance.  When first released it was banned from the Radio One play list for its "suggestive" lyrical content.  It is rumoured that the US military played it through a large PA system as a form of aural encouragement whilst trying to dislodge General Manuel Noriega from his office during their invasion of Panama in 1989.  "Criminal World" is not a disco or dance song per say but it has some great hooks and great melodies with some insane guitar solos.

Ce Soir (Je Sens que tout peut m'arriver)

"Ce Soir (Je Sens que tout peut m'arriver)" according to google translator  means "Tonight I am meaning that anything can happen".  Ummm... I wonder....Anyhow, this is a song that I love very much by Adrienne Ste-Claire. She was part of the trio called Beauregard, Violetti & Ste-Claire also simply known as BVS.  During the mid '70s this group titillated everyone with provocative titles such as "Orgasm", "Undo Your Blouse" and "Frenzy".  Although it was obvious they were influenced by David Bowie and The Bee Gees, this trio made quite a stir in Europe and Canada with their musical style that was unique and unlike anything else at the time.   Their first album,  En Plein Orgasme (In Full Orgasm) is full of beautiful rock ballads, early disco and Glam in a style that is sensual and bitter at the same time.  It was only launched in Quebec and France, featuring one of the most beautiful cover art ever seen for an album in Quebec.  The photo is a result of the work of Daniel Poulin, and the mouth belongs to the comedian and actress Dolores McDonough.  This cover art caused controversy at the time but ironically not about it's sensual nature but rather because of the fact that the record company CBS in Montreal released the rights and the same concept was used for a Wild Cherry LP cover that has become quite famous.  This infuriated the members of the group, a lawsuit ensued and the group is no longer registered for CBS.  I found this album at a Montreal record shop about four years ago. The clerk informed me that this is considered a total classic and it is a hard to find LP.  This is an amazing record that informs the beginnings of Disco, funk and 70's rock with a French twist.  This album also contains a fierce French version of LaBelle's "What Can You Do For Me"which I am planning on posting it in the near future. In the meantime enjoy "Ce Soir"!
