Use of horseradish peroxidase to study the antagonism of Clostridium welchii (Cl. perfringens) type D epsilon toxin in mice by the formalinized epsilon prototoxin

Intravenously administered horseradish peroxidase was shown to leak from the brain
vasculature of mice which had received lethal doses of Clostridium welchii (Cl. perfringens)
Type D ε-toxin. This leakage was prevented by the prior administration of formalinized ε-
prototoxin, but the inhibition was relatively short lived. It is suggested that ε-toxin may exert
its effect through specific receptor sites on the vascular endothelium. Antigenically similar
formalinized ε-prototoxin blocks this effect.
