LD 291 & Maine Native Studies

In 2001, the Maine Legislature passed LD 291: An Act to Require Teaching of Maine Native American History and Culture in Maine's Schools. This act amended the statute Title 20-A - §4706. Instruction in American History, Maine Studies and Maine Native American History to require that Maine Native American history and culture must be taught at all elementary and secondary schools, both public and private.

Abbe Museum
The Abbe Museum is the first and only Smithsonian affiliate in Maine. The museum showcases history and cultures of the Native people in Maine, the Wabanaki, are showcased through changing exhibitions, special events, archaeology field schools, and workshops.
Sunlight Media Collective
The Sunlight Media Collective is an organization of indigenous and non-indigenous media makers and activists, including Wabanaki tribal members, working to document and present stories affecting Wabanaki people and highlighting Wabanaki perspectives, with a particular emphasis on the intersection between environmental issues and tribal rights.
Wabanaki Alliance
In June of 2020 the tribes in Maine (Aroostook Band of Micmac, Houlton Band of Maliseet, Passamaquoddy Tribe and Penobscot Nation) formed the Wabanaki Alliance. The Wabanaki Alliance was formed to educate people of Maine about the need for securing sovereignty of the tribes in Maine.
Wabanaki Public Health
Wabanaki Public Health and Wellness’ (WPHW) mission is to provide community-driven, culturally centered public health and social services to all Wabanaki communities and people while honoring Wabanaki cultural knowledge, cultivating innovation, and fostering collaboration.
Wabanaki REACH
Wabanaki REACH supports the self-determination of Wabanaki people through education, truth-telling, restorative justice, and restorative practices in Wabanaki and Maine communities.
