Stratifies patient’s functional outcome after acute brain injury
The Extended Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS-E) was created as an advancement from the original GOS. It uses categories which are broader and less sensitive to change. It also seeks to improve internal validity with better inter-observer reliabilty.
The GOS-E adds to the original 5 GOS categories, with 3 additional categories. The 8 categories are: Dead, Vegetative State, Lower Severe Disability, Upper Severe Disability, Lower Moderate Disability, Upper Moderate Disability, Lower Good Recovery, and Upper Good Recovery.
A structured interview has been provided to improve reliability of rating. Good interrater reliability and content validity have been demonstrated for the GOS-E. Compared to the GOS, the GOS-E has been shown to be more sensitive to change in mild to moderate traumatic brain injury. There is no formal training mechanism for administering the GOS-E.The GOS-E is not meant to be a self-perception instrument. Raters should rate each item based on the most accurate information they have, regardless of source.
