• Thank yourself for an edit on betacommons using an alternate account
• Go to https://commons.wikimedia.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/Main_Page?useskin=minerva

What happens?:
Next to the user menu there is a red circle with the number one in it. When clicked, the "your alerts" menu opens. As "thanks" is a notification and not an alert*, there's nothing to see here. If you click on "All notifications" the "thanks" can be seen there, but there is no indication that's what you need to do to see the notification.

What should have happened instead?:
If I see a red circle with a one in it and I click it, I'd expect to see some sort of unread update or message.

*Don't look at me, I'm just the messenger, there's a difference for whatever reason

Note: when using the mobile domain (https://commons.m.wikimedia.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/Main_Page) the behavior is different: the menu opens in a different way (comes in from the side) and alerts and notifications are mixed.
