A PEACEFUL DESIGN FOR LUXURIOUS ON-WATER LIVING

LUXURY YACHT DESIGN THE LILLIUM BY BILGIN YACHTS

The 48-meter Lilium is a prime example of luxury yachts design and Turkish Craftsmanship. The yacht can accommodate up to 10 guests in her 5-cabin layout and features many interior and exterior jacuzzi and is surrounded by U-shape sunbeds. The interiors were curated to bring a sense of peace to the yacht, as described by İsmail Şengün as “peaceful brightness”. The color palette is mostly made of whites, with a few black touches and golden details. Brass was used throughout the yacht, as in the cabins’ lighting, to create a warm atmosphere. The lighting is one of the most important elements of the yacht, which is described as “luminous”. And while natural lighting brightens the interiors, the designers selected Tycho wall lamp by LUXXU for the cabins, a lighting fixture that takes yacht design to another level.

Lilium, named after the beautiful white flower, is a promising yacht - a promise of sunny and happy on-water living. Designed by Unique Yacht Design on the exterior and manicured on the inside by H2 Yacht Design and Bilgin Yacht Design.

Intricate and unique joinery and carpentry, metalwork, marquetry, paintwork and countless other disciplines give superyachts an unrivalled degree of sophistication. Thousands of highly skilled men and women are employed at superyacht yards around the world, many of them from families that have

SUPERYACHTS ARE GETTING GREENER SUSTAINABILITY IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST TRENDS Superyachts of the future: bigger and greener. Sustainability has become a hot topic in the yachting world, with many superyachts developing innovative solutions to help reduce their environmental footprint. Savannah, an 84m Feadship, was billed as the first hybrid superyacht with a single-engine, three generators and a combined total of approximately one megawatt-worth of batteries. Black Pearl, the 107m sailing yacht from Oceanco, meanwhile, uses special shaft generators which create free electricity by allowing the propellers to turn when the yacht is under sail. Fuel cells are also gaining momentum, with Italian shipyard VSY developing a concept powered by hydrogen fuel technology, together with renowned designer Espen Oeino, Siemens and Lloyds Register.

that very same vision. That matter also ends up being a factor that, for Ken Freivokh, defines a lot of the features of many current yacht owners. “I find that current yacht owners are more prepared to accept innovation, and to allow designers to create a yacht which is totally unique and personal, and expression of the owners tastes and interests.” When it comes to projects, aside from some aforementioned superyacht designs, Freivokh has also had a series of relevant collaborations with several production yacht builders which includes names such as Sunseeker and Discovery Yachts. Aside from developing several interior design styles with these two companies, Ken Freivokh has also developed tender designs with Pasoe. In all of his work it’s evident that quality and bespoke craftsmanship has a relevant role in the quality that is reflected on each of his company’s projects, and the designer knows this. “There will always be a role for bespoke craftsmanship, even in the most simple and minimalistic designs, and such skills are essential and reflect the quality and intricacy of the design.” It’s very evident that Freivokh, alongside his team, throughout many years have been responsible for the creation of a variety of stunning yacht exteriors and interiors. The studio has gained a reputation very notable for showing a common element to their projects: cutting edge and often futuristic concept designs. However, the designer stated that he believes that the industry can still move forward a lot faster through the adoption of other more creative and advanced design methods. He believes that the designers in the industry are more than ready to take on the challenge of adapting to that change, and it’s only a matter of preparing the other groups inserted in the community for this eventual change.

“I believe that yachts could still move forward adopting more creative and advanced techniques, three dimensional structural solutions such as space frames and geodesic structures, much greater use of structural glass to achieve amazing panoramic views from all key areas of the yacht. The designers are ready, the owners can be made ready, the shipyards have to brace themselves to be ready!” COVETED MAGAZINE PAGE 47.

Speaking of their type of clients, most of them are billionaires, many of whom come from industries such as fin-tech and e-commerce. Aside from looking for something unique and suiting for their lifestyle, they are very detail-oriented in their vision of a dream yacht. The team at Winch Design has a good habit of getting to know their clients, more specifically their tastes, preferences and habits, and from there initiate a collaborative conversation which will be an essential base step towards achieving an incredible final result. “It’s great when the client is fully involved and there is a creative

dialogue between them and our designers as it means that we are able to understand their dreams in their entirety.” The team shares a passion for delivering designs imbued with the Winch ethos for beauty, uniqueness and perfect proportion. The work created by the Studio over the last 33 years speaks for itself and current projects continue to push boundaries and expectations of design. They’ve also managed to create some relevant relationships with many of their suppliers, each of them being a master in their own craft. Craftsmanship, for that matter, is a matter that the team gives a great amount of emphasis to, seen as they invest in it for the final results. When it comes to trends in the yachting world, Jim points to the increasing popularity that explorer yachts are gaining throughout this period. According to him, these vessels have features such as robust hulls, higher crew capacity and superior storage space, alongside with the fact that are vessels equipped with the tech, durability and propulsion power which allows the owner, guests and crew to enjoy travels across a variety of extreme environments. As a matter of fact Winch Design has been working on three projects directed toward that sense, seen as these yachts are taking over many sea lovers. “Clients are expecting a flow and consistency between their spaces on land and at sea and want their yachts to be multi-functional and capable of functioning in the same way as a home on land. Some clients are choosing to spend extended periods of time on board, some are even choosing to live permanently on board. “

When it comes to some possible changes in the yachting industry, Jim Dixon predicts a dramatic change in the superyacht industry in this upcoming decade. There are a series of rules which are being applied to help the the move towards carbon neutral methods of propulsion, in order to help control the levels of pollution in several areas at risk. He predicts a huge increase in Hydrogen fuel Powered Yachts, a type of vessel which will be protected from loss of value and produce no harmful emissions, as well as a resurgence of interest in sailing yachts, which are boats that can be very luxurious, and also help on the ecological matter. In Norway, for that matter, certain fjords have banned combustion fuelled liners and yachts from entering in a bid with the goal of eradicating the high levels of pollution detrimental for the local environment. Jim manifests a hope that the yachting community will start to turn to discussions regarding ecological and sustainable matters through which the boating industry can help protect the environment.

MOTAR YACHT A DESIGNED BY PHILIPPE STARCK Blohm + Voss strike again with the 390 ft (119m) luxury motor yacht, “A”. Built in Kiel and launched in early 2008, it’s currently one of the largest motor yachts in the world. It features a panoply of unique features, from her innovative engineering and design to the fantastic and completely ostentatious three swimming pools that create currents. It can accommodate up to 14 guests and is designed for 35 crew members on board. Costing around 300 million dollars, the superyacht is an homage to the contemporary design, although its interior is also very under wraps. UNIQUE CIRCLE DESIGNED BY ZAHA HADID Blohm + Voss make yet another appearance and top our list with a collaboration with one of the most well-known and remarkable architect studios in the entire world: Zaha Hadid. This contemporary take on a superyacht concept and design delivered a prototype for a 420 ft (128m) yacht. The design inspiration is taken from fluid dynamics and underwater ecosystems, with hydrodynamic research shaping the design of the hull. Also, this exoskeleton connects the various levels and decks of the ship seamlessly via expressive diagonals. Zaha Hadid has created intense connectivity between the various decks and elements of the modern design: a language of the master prototype has been applied to subsequent variations of the Unique Circle Yachts 90m yacht concepts, creating a comprehensible and clear design with the highest correlation between the various design possibilities. The clean, white, contemporary interiors were also inspired by the ocean’s fluid form. It’s still unknown if and when the Zaha Hadid-designed superyachts will be built, but it’s still an unique project, with Blohm + Voss and Zaha Hadid Architects working together to address the practical challenges of designing a yacht while remaining true to the strong, unique design language of the master prototype. The resulting designs are the synergy and collaboration of Zaha Hadid’s design vision and the technical knowledge of Blohm + Voss, consenting flexibility and customization in the eventual design of the luxury yacht. MATSUHISA MUNICH MUNICH, GERMANY

Considered one of the trendiest culinary addresses in the heart of the Bavarian capital, restaurant Matsuhisa Munich is a must-go for gastronomy lovers. This elegant and minimalistic restaurant is located on the first floor of the luxurious Mandarin Oriental hotel and is, so far, the only restaurant from chef Nobuyuki “Nobu” Matsuhisa in Germany.

The outstanding menu has the signature of the acclaimed Chef Nobuyuki “Nobu” Matsuhisa, famous for his fantastic twist on classic Japanese food. Trendy, stylish and unconventional, the menu is centred around a dynamic Japanese-Peruvian gastronomic experience that you won’t regret. The culinary highlights include seafood, traditional sushi, black cod sashimi, yellowtail sashimi with jalapeños and hot dishes, such as tea-braised Rib Eye with Peruvian anticucho sauce.

WORLD’S FINEST RESTAURANTS //

Chef Nobu’s rich and diverse work experience made this symbiosis of Japanese and Peruvian cuisine deliciously possible – thanks to the exotic marinades and spices that pair wonderfully with fish and meats – and has avoided the trend-chasing, fusion cuisine. The Matsuhisa Munich follows the successful formula of the original Matsuhisa Beverly Hills restaurant and his eight other exclusive restaurants around the world. Even though Matsuhisa was trained as a classical sushi chef, his path and incomparable culinary style result in the perfect combination of flavours.

Matsuhisa Munich’s space offers an intimate atmosphere with a semiprivate section for up to 10 guests, where it’s possible to experience Omakase – a bespoke culinary experience exploring the chef’s best choices. Stylish and comfortable, the warm brown and gold hues and Asian decorative elements, as well as palm-and-leather furniture, decorate the appealing space. Matsuhisa Munich also features an exclusive eightseat live cooking counter, where skilled chefs will prepare a variety of Matsuhisa’s famous Japanese-Peruvian dishes. NAUTICAL PASSION The classic sailing trip has always been synonymous with glamour, style and elegance. There’s nothing better than to feel the wind in your hair and the sun on your skin as you sail through an incredible sea, all while enjoying a cocktail on the deck of a gorgeous superyacht. With all this nautical passion and lifestyle in mind, CovetED Magazine brings you our biggest inspirations for the nautical world, starting with the newest Cruise Collection by Chanel and followed by some of the most iconic stars of the 50s and 60s that have influenced the nautical lifestyle to this day.

STYLE ICONS //

CHANEL CRUISE COLLECTION 2020 Following in Karl Lagerfeld’s footsteps but trying to leave a mark of her own, Virginie Viard’s first collection as Chanel’s new Creative Director was laid-back and relaxed whilst staying true to the brand’s classic style: lots of skirt suits, bows and ballet flats. But there were some mood swings as

Viard presented a simple train station, with signs that directed to Europe’s most coveted vacation destinations, such as Venice or the French Riviera, both perfect to strut the Cruise Collection on a jawdropping superyacht.

well, with many wide pants, blouses and even tweed jackets worn over leggings. The opening look of the show was respectful but, at the same time, portrayed how the liberated and young Chanel herself would have dressed in 2020, with a black jacket and wide-leg pants. On the other hand, the final look was a clear homage to Karl Lagerfeld, with the model dressed in a halter dress with an Edwardian collar, in the late designer’s trademark black and white. The collection was presented at the Grand Palais and the show was quite different from the iconic spectacles Lagerfeld gotten the world used to.

GRACE KELLY Grace Kelly made history on April 1956 when she married into royalty and set sail for a dreamy honeymoon around the Mediterranean on an incredible superyacht. She is undeniably one of the most glamorous stars to ever be featured on our screens and this classic yacht represented her presence perfectly. The yacht was gifted to the royal couple as a wedding present by Aristotle Onassis and, today, the refurbished M/Y Grace cruises the crystal clear waters of the Galapagos Islands, where you can enjoy its amazing wooden deck

BRIGITTE BARDOT Considered one of the world’s sexiest actresses ever, Brigitte Bardot made her way to St. Tropez in the 50s to star in “And God Created Woman”, a movie that propelled her and the peaceful fishing town into stardom. Nowadays, thousands of visitors walk the beaches of St. Tropez each summer, with the French village continuing to proper thanks to its image as one of the world’s most glamorous sailing destinations. The now-iconic picture of Bardot on a Riva Aquarama speedboat represents what nautical living is all about: effortless elegance and luxury.

SOPHIA LOREN Sophia Loren is often referred to as a ‘cinema treasure’ and, to this day, still radiates allure like no other. The actress shot to stardom in the late 1950s thanks to a contract with Paramount that secured her image as a poster-girl for Mediterranean glamour. Loren often sails the waters of the Italian coastline and is even asked to christen mega-ships. Her personal radiance mixed with an incredibly designed boat make for the perfect combination.

STYLE ICONS //

JOHN F. KENNEDY Former American President John F. Kennedy’s favourite way to escape the chaotic life in the White House was to set sail on his beloved yacht, the Honey Fitz, nicknamed the ‘White House on the water’. This incredible wooden vessel was built in 1931 and served five American presidents, from Harry S. Truman to JFK, whose wife, Jackie installed the boat’s very first colour television in the 60s. Both Kennedy and Jackie exude glamour, with Kennedy being considered one of the most handsome presidents of all time and Jackie is a style icon to this day. Both are a major inspiration when it comes to nautical style and aesthetics.

AUDREY HEPBURN The iconic “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” star had her hearts from the very beginning of her career. Always stylish from head to toe, Audrey’s style at sea was always impeccable and inspiring. After filming “Roman Holiday” with Gregory Peck in 1953, Hepburn resided in the Italian capital for over 20 years. Often spending summers sailing around the Mediterranean, Audrey’s classic sailing style is still imitated today by women all over the world.

ELIZABETH TAYLOR The incredible Elizabeth Taylor loved to sail and looked incredible doing it. Taylor’s husband, Richard Burton, purchased their Edwardian motor yacht, the Kalizma, for her in 1967. After renting the iconic boat, the couple bought it and had it completely refurbished. Nearly every week, the yacht was moored at one of the beautiful ports along the Mediterranean and boarded by famous friends and guests who indulged in lavish meals as they sailed the stunning coastline together.
