Northumberland’s leading residential and commercial property experts

www.bradleyhall.co.uk

Welcome

Since our first edition in 2019, we’ve opened our shop in Warkworth, grown our team, expanded into new locations such as Berwick and Boulmer and navigated around the challenges of Covid-19 restrictions. We’ve come out the other end more passionate, delighted to have welcomed so many holiday makers and be a part of creating so many memories during a difficult time, and thrilled that there’s more of us to spread the word! Our last edition was to celebrate our 21st year in business, and this time around we’re closer to our 25th anniversary. We’re one of very few

independent, family-run agencies left in Northumberland and we see this as such an advantage, as it allows us to give a bespoke service with strong local knowledge at the helm of our passions for the area. This edition features some of the more hidden areas and businesses in Northumberland, as we encourage you to dive a bit deeper into the history of our magnificent county and step a bit outside of your comfort zone. For those who have stayed in Northumberland before, you may find a place or an idea written in here that you’ve never explored, igniting an excitement for

your next upcoming trip. For those new to the area, we dare you to step off the beaten track and make your first impression of Northumberland as magical as possible. As typical Northerners, we’re friendly and love a good chat, so pop in to see us! We’re open 7 days a week and we’re not hard to find, as we’re right in the centre of Warkworth Village. One of us here will greet you with a big smile and a warm welcome. Thank you to every customer and owner who has supported us during such a challenging time. We’re immensely proud of our Coquet family and we can’t wait to see what the next couple of years bring us. Julie, Stephanie, Mark and all the team at Coquet Cottages.

NORTHERN NARRATIVES

Historic

Northumberland Northumberland is one of those places that continuously finds itself on the UK’s ‘must-visit’ lists, and for good reason. Famous for its untouched countryside, picturesque beaches and friendly locals, it also happens to be one of the most important historic counties and is home to the former Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria. If it’s history you’re after on your next break, Northumberland is certainly the place to be. We’re sharing some of the area’s top historical landmarks (and a few lesser-known gems along the way) along with fabled folklore and local legends that can trace their roots all the way back to ancient times... MYTHS & LEGENDS First stop on our historic tour of the area is the mysterious Drake Stone. Nestled in the depths of Northumberland National Park between the River Coquet and the Cheviots, this druidical relic is said to have supernatural healing powers and the ability to cure the sick. This legendary vantage point dates all the

way back to the Bronze Age, and those who are nimble enough to climb to its 30ft summit will be rewarded with spectacular views down onto Harbottle Castle and beyond to the sea. A short 20-minute drive towards Rothbury lies what remains of Lordenshaws: the ruins of an Iron Age hillfort and Bronze Age burial mounds. Here you’ll find one of the largest recorded clusters of cup-and-ring stone carvings in the country. These curious hollows and grooves are thought to be ancient rock art created by our Neolithic and Bronze Age ancestors. Lordenshaws’s archaeological importance is significant to

NORTHERN NARRATIVES

Northumberland’s rich history, and its weaving network of walls, ramparts and boulders caters to both the curiosity of children and budding historians alike. Continue your journey in an eastward direction towards Bamburgh and you’ll reach the birthplace of local legend Grace Darling. The daughter of a lighthouse keeper, Grace bravely risked her life to help rescue survivors from the Forfarshire shipwreck just off the Farne Islands in 1838. Widely considered a national heroine, she was the first woman to receive an RNLI medal, and you can discover more about her fascinating story at the dedicated Grace Darling RNLI museum in Bamburgh.

KEY LANDMARKS

Lindisfarne Priory

Berwick-upon-Tweed

The Northumberland coastline lays claim to being the landing point of the first recorded Viking raid in England, which took place in 793 on nearby Holy Island: the next historic goldmine on our whirlwind tour. The priory was destroyed, goods were stolen and blood was shed. A trip to the island wouldn’t be complete without viewing the famous ‘Domesday Stone’ held at Lindisfarne Museum – a ninth-century carving immortalising the grisly attack. The island is cut off by the tide twice a day, so be sure to check the causeway crossing times before setting off. Once you’ve made it back to the mainland, head to England’s northernmost town of Berwick-uponTweed to discover the Elizabethan town walls. Built in 1558, they’re the only remaining bastioned town walls in Britain and are one of the best preserved examples in the whole of Europe. Our verdict? If you’re after a combination of scenic walks and ancient defence lines, these remarkably intact fortifications are well worth adding to your list. For visitors who love to discover hidden gems off the beaten track, it doesn’t

COQUETCOTTAGES.CO.UK 07

NORTHERN NARRATIVES

get much more secluded and remote than Warkworth Hermitage. Set into a cliff face on the north bank of the river Coquet, this atmospheric chapel and priest’s house cannot be accessed by foot. Book tickets at the castle, then wander down to the riverside jetty where a friendly gentleman will take you over in a small rowing boat. It’s a truly memorable experience that’s guaranteed to transport you to another era entirely.

CASTLES Northumberland is no stranger to conflict, evidenced by the countless battlegrounds and strongholds that once acted as a buffer between Scotland and the rest of England. It’s one of the reasons why Northumberland has more castles than any other county in England. Let’s start with one that’s guaranteed to thrill any visitor who sets foot into its hallowed grounds: Chillingham Castle. Described as ‘Britain’s most haunted historic castle’, this ancient fortress boasts a gruesome past and has seen its fair share of turbulent times. “How many castles are still inhabited to this day by direct descendants of the original bloodline?” asks owner and baronet Sir Humphy Wakefield. “Not many! William the Conqueror sent our relations up here to help keep the Scots at bay, and the rest is in the history books.” He goes on to say that Chillingham has seen “countless battles, crusades and even royal visits, from Henry III in 1255 to Edward Hammer of the Scots in 1298.” And as for the castle’s 21st-century guests? “Just 18 months ago we were lucky to have our last visit from HRH Prince Philip,” he reveals fondly. Alnwick Castle is worth a special mention, too. It’s best known as the filming location for the Harry Potter films and period drama series Downton Abbey, but few members of the public are aware that the surrounding gardens were actually

08 COQUETCOTTAGES.CO.UK

designed by Britain’s most famous landscape gardener, Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. He was commissioned by the 1st Duke of Northumberland to redesign the grounds between 1750 and 1786. So now you know – those magnificent views didn’t just happen by chance. Last (but certainly not least) we’re returning to Bamburgh, this time to focus on the castle itself. It ranks in the world’s top ten Anglo-Saxon archaeological sites thanks to the

plethora of priceless treasures that have been discovered during excavations over the years. Don’t miss the so-called ‘Bamburgh Beast’ gold plaque and the rare pattern welded sword on display in the on-site Archaeology Museum. Spend a morning uncovering the past in the State Rooms, King’s Hall and the Armoury, then venture out onto the Battery Terrace in the afternoon to reenact cannonball battles of epic proportions with younger members of the family.

OUR BUSINESS IN THREE WORDS…

Wow, this is hard! Northumberland is such a diverse county, but I suppose my ‘must-visit place’ is walking along the River Coquet. I find it bewitching. In the summer, very early in the morning or at dusk when the stars are starting to come out, it is warm and calm and the sound of the birds fill the air. It is glorious. By contrast, the autumn is a Japanese quilt of colours and reflections and the migratory birds are a show in themselves. And last, but not least, winter is all bright blue skies with frost tipped grasses and silhouettes of trees with the castle looming through in all its splendour.

WHAT NORTHUMBERLAND MEANS TO US… Northumberland means home and in this, is the beautiful complexity of the soaring Cheviots in the west and then the slow geographical decline east. It’s the sunkissed beaches and historic castles, the wet dog days and picnics on the beach, it’s walking in forests and cycling through little villages, it’s being quiet and still, yet being active and energetic. Northumberland is simply home. cabossechocolates.co.uk

The Hungry Obbit Hilltop Farm Animal Sanctuary is not only home to hundreds of amazing farm animals, it’s also a place where you can enjoy one of the most unique dining experiences you can hope to find in Northumberland! Join us as we step inside The Hungry Obbit, with founder Robin Hills… Nestled away on the green fields of Gorfenletch, near Morpeth, is one of the most charming farms you’re ever likely to discover. Hilltop Farm Animal Sanctuary has been caring for unwanted farm animals for over 20 years, offering a safe haven and rehabilitation for these wonderful creatures right in the heart of Northumberland. At the helm of this heart-warming operation is Robin Hills, the founder and working manager of the farm. He’s been working at Hilltop with his mother since they moved there in 2000. Having known he wanted to turn the farm into a sanctuary, Robin decided to move down south and become a veterinary nurse so that he could learn to help the animals as much as possible. This is where he first had the idea for The Hungry Obbit! “I was working as a practice manager and head veterinary nurse in Northampton,” Robin says. “I’d just hired a receptionist at the practice and I learnt that she had a small hobbit hut in her garden. She and her husband had built one to encourage her not to smoke in the house. “One day she asked if I fancied cooking

“The best thing about The Hungry Obbit is that it combines two of my greatest passions - food and animals! I get to raise awareness of the sanctuary whilst treating guests to a lovely homecooked meal by the fire” what can you expect from The Hungry Obbit’s food? Well, the evening menu kicks off with a rich cheese fondue mixed with locally sourced cider, alongside some crunchy celery sticks for dunking. On to the main course. For carnivores there’s a juicy prime 9oz steak or a in the hobbit hut, as she knew I liked to cook in my spare time. Of course, I said yes! “The second I stepped inside I had this vision of me cooking for guests on my own farm to raise money for the sanctuary. And that’s where the idea for The Hungry Obbit came from!” Robin moved back up to the North East and got to work on building this oneof-a-kind dining experience that would in turn keep the sanctuary running. The Hungry Obbit first opened its doors in 2017, inviting diners to spend an evening on Hilltop Farm in Robin’s super cosy hut. Quickly, word spread online and The

Hungry Obbit went from strength to strength as more and more people raved about it. People were blown away by the food and how charming Robin is; you can’t scroll past a review without a mention of his excellent hosting abilities! “The best thing about The Hungry Obbit is that it combines two of my greatest passions - food and animals! BUSINESS FOCUS

Five minutes with...

NAME: Martha Gothorp JOB TITLE: Owner and silversmith BUSINESS: Salt & Co.

OUR BUSINESS IN THREE WORDS… Sterling silver jewellery.

THE DAY JOB BRINGS… I start each day with my three great loves: coffee, my little dog, and a walk on Alnmouth beach. I drive from one seaside village to the next, where I open the doors to my shop. I work at my little jeweller’s bench, where I can enjoy views of Amble Pier and the little shore beach, making online orders or restocking the shelves in the shop. I spend the rest of the day chatting to customers and people who pop in, gift wrapping their purchases and making jewellery in between it all! If I can, I spend my evenings in the sea, on my paddle board, kayaking or surfing. I like to take every opportunity I can to be outside when the weather is nice, and nothing makes me happier than eating my dinner outside or on the beach if possible.

26 COQUETCOTTAGES.CO.UK

WE’VE INVESTED… This year I made the leap to open my first shop after being an online business for quite some time. My little shop is a dream come true and is in a fantastic spot, just five metres away from the sea. The perfect spot to be inspired, day in and day out. You can find me and my sterling silver jewellery in the new harbour master’s building, between the little shore beach and the Fish Shack in Amble.

SOMETHING SPECIAL… When I was young and we first moved here, my Dad and I would go on little adventures. We once discovered a place we called ‘the secret beach’, which is now not so much of a secret, and a spot enjoyed by many between Alnmouth and Warkworth beach. It’s a magical place that on the right day feels totally remote and sacred. The surf is usually great there too.

WHAT NORTHUMBERLAND MEANS TO US… Northumberland is home. It’s where I grew up, where I spent my childhood in

the sea, exploring on kayaks or building sandcastles and waiting for the tide to come in. It’s home to all of my inspiration, where all my silver creations stem from. Northumberland is where I found all the things I love and with the coast on my doorstep, this place is my haven and not a day goes by that I’m not grateful for it. Salt & Co. Holburn Mill Cottage

Owner feature...

Christine & Alan Chilvers

Far enough away to enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside, close enough to explore the best Northumberland has to offer. Christine and Alan, owners of Holburn Mill Cottage and Horseshoe Cottage explain why their love for Holburn Mill continues to flourish… Both originally from Tyneside, husband and wife duo Christine and Alan, have lived in a number of places but always intended, when they could, to move to Northumberland. Their search brought them to Holburn Mill. “We loved the location and the history of the mill as well as the gardens and outside space. Having a holiday cottage had never been something we had considered but the mill just so happened to have Holburn Mill Cottage already with it so, here we are,” Christine begins to explain. Retirement for the couple was about finding somewhere within touching distance of the best Northumberland

32 COQUETCOTTAGES.CO.UK

has to offer, but far enough away to enjoy the peace and quiet with the only distractions being the surrounding wildlife: “North Northumberland just seems that bit more unspoilt and quieter. We love the coast and the countryside and feel we have the best of both here. One of the big things for us is that in just 10 minutes we can be on an almost empty beach, visiting a castle, in the Cheviots or in a town or village and then return to a peace and tranquillity that you don't get in many places.” Located within a prime location for exploring Northumberland, there’s much to see and do nearby including

a visit to Holy Island or Bamburgh Castle, a spot of lunch in one of the local pubs or restaurants, beach strolls and countryside hikes and ample opportunity for exploring local culture and history with trips to likes of Chillingham Castle. “There is an abundance of wildlife both in the garden and surrounding area which we love to watch. We regularly see deer, hares, pheasant, partridge, ducks, red squirrels, owls and more. We can even look into the stream and watch the small wild trout rise for flies or spot the odd eel. The sunsets and sunrises are stunning and, on a clear night, it is amazing to look up at the sky

RENOVATION EXPERTS

of the workings are intact. We have a 'workings room', grinding stones in the floor and even have the large wheel in our hallway,” she begins to educate. “Holburn Mill Cottage was once the cart shed for the mill and Horseshoe Cottage, the stables. The cottage was already named when we arrived and had been used as a holiday cottage but was lacking personality and comfort so we went about putting 'our stamp' on it.. “I tried to take some inspiration from the surroundings for the interior decor of both cottages. Holburn Mill Cottage was the first and I wanted a calm, comfortable interior with mostly muted colours but using colourful accents with wildlife and flowers for cushions and artwork. We love art, so and see so many stars, there’s always a chance you might get to see the Northern Lights too.” As well as the cottage gardens and outside spaces, guests are welcome to use the lawned area next to the drive and pick apples from the trees. “We try to keep the river bank quite natural as we find this attracts more wildlife. Much of the planting in the gardens and courtyard is there to attract wildlife and pollinators. “We have a small flock of Hebridean sheep who keep the paddock at the

time, especially when we had so many sets of twins, but the Hebrideans are great mums. We also have a flock of free range hens who provide much entertainment as well as the most delicious eggs for both us and the cottages. “One of the nice things with having the two cottages is that they can be booked together so friends or family that want to holiday together but not 'live' together, can have their own space. Holburn Mill Cottage has a dining table and outside seating for

the pictures in both cottages (with one exception) are either original or limited edition prints from North East artists. “The watercolour of the hare in the

back of the mill under control for us. They are very friendly, will eat from your hand and come when called. We had our first lambs this year which was both exciting and terrifying at the same

four so it is possible to still eat together and share outside space if they wish to do so.” Holburn Mill Cottage hasn’t always been the cosy idyllic retreat that it is today. Christine explains: “The earliest written record of the mill is 1539 when it was thought to be a single storey thatched building. It was added to in c1789 and finally in c1891 to be the building it is today. Amazingly it milled corn right up to the mid 1950s but then fell into severe disrepair until work began to convert it to a home in 2005. All of the buildings are Grade II listed and the mill is considered an important example now as so much

bedroom of Horseshoe Cottage was actually done by my mother. We didn't want both cottages to look alike so, with Horseshoe Cottage, I decided on a more vibrant and modern approach but also trying to remain peaceful. The focus for this came from the pheasant cushions and thistles. Again art was important and we love the vibrancy of the Bamburgh painting in the lounge and the quirkiness of the pheasant cushions also both by North East artists. “We hope guests feel rested and enjoy the peace when staying at the cottages and maybe catch a glimpse of a hare runing past or a cheeky pheasant looking through their window!”

GREEN STAYS

Cleaning up

Northumberland

Northumberland is renowned for its pristine beaches and idyllic countryside. The beauty of our county draws in tourists from near and far and while this is great for our local economy, it can have a detrimental effect on the environment. When visiting Northumberland there are a number of things you can be mindful of to ensure you’re doing your bit to help reduce this impact… FIVE WAYS TO HELP… 1. Take your rubbish with you Whether it’s a day spent by the sea or a picnic in the countryside, please remember to take your rubbish with you when you leave. One empty plastic bottle of water may not seem all that damaging, but can in fact cause devastation to both sea life and wildlife. When you arrive back at your cottage all of your rubbish can be emptied into the correct refuse and recycling bins. Please see your property guidebook for more information on each cottage's recycling methods and bin days. 2. Stretch those legs… Northumberland is home to many beautiful destinations and must-visit attractions and it can seem easier to get it all done in one visit by car. But actually, a lot of it can be achieved on foot which can help to reduce your carbon footprint. An example? Start your day with breakfast at The Ship

Inn in Low-Newton-by-the-sea before strolling along Embleton Bay, taking in the sights of Dunstanburgh Castle and ending up in the beautiful fishing village of Craster. Multiple destinations ticked off in one walk. If walking isn’t an option, check out local transport links for getting about.

holiday. But the reality is, most of the stuff we buy comes back or is wasted and thrown out. We like to prepare for all occasions, but next time, consider making a small list and only purchase the essentials. Instead of buying new toothpaste, pack the one from home. Instead of buying a lettuce because you might have a salad if you stay in for

3. Eat local… There’s nothing better than trying new foodie spots when visiting new places. Whenever possible, try making a conscious effort to eat locally. Seek out those farm-to-table spots and dine at restaurants that pride themselves on using locally-sourced ingredients. The less your food has to travel before it ends up on your plate, the better for the environment. Reduce your carbon footprint, while enjoying bespoke dishes and local cuisine too.

lunch, plan in advance. Small changes can make a huge difference.

4. Shop less, optimise more… We can all be guilty of over packing and buying too much when we’re going on

5. Take part in local clean-ups… The local community sticks together to ensure their stunning coastline remains that way and you can join in too. There are plenty of group cleans-ups happening across Northumberland for all to get involved in. No group clean-up during your visit? No worries. If this is something you’d like to get involved with, you can always go solo. Walk along the beach, collecting rubbish along the way, leaving the beach in a better state than you found it.

NORTHUMBERLAND WILDLIFE

The combination of Northumberland’s breathtaking, rugged coast with its endless beaches and the country parks and nature reserves offer an abundance of wildlife. With the chance of sightings of puffins, grey seals, wild cattle, ospreys, red squirrels and rare roseate terns, you’ll be hard pushed to find another part of the UK that boasts so many treats for wildlife-lovers. It’s a place like no other…

Puffin spotting There are few better places to see these rare, quirky birds than on the Farne Islands. They’re a firm favourite with visitors and provide endless, perfect photo opportunities with their distinctive features, beautiful markings and vibrant colours. Often referred to as a sea parrot, in Northumberland, these cute little birds are lovingly known as a ‘Tommy Noddy’. They’re unusual in the bird world as the males and females look almost identical, the male just tending to be slightly larger. They nest underground in a burrow and raise a single chick, called a puffling, which looks nothing like the adult birds - instead just a little charcoal coloured ball of fluff! Their parents desert them shortly before they are ready to leave the nest, the timing of breeding in puffin colonies is highly synchronised, so the departure of all adults takes place within a few days. The youngsters leave their nest burrow and head to the sea, normally under

Seahouses harbour too. The best place to see them is on the offshore islands where they haul themselves out onto the rocks for a rest, with the outer Farne Islands and Coquet Island being key haul-out areas all year round. There are boat companies at Seahouses that provide special trips to the Farne Islands to view seals in the autumn when the females come ashore to pup. If you’re visiting during the summer months, you can see hundreds of seals on the sand flats at Lindisfarne national nature reserve and the best place to view them from is Heugh at Holy Island. Despite their friendly, cuddly appearance, these wild animals can be easily disturbed and a frightened seal can turn defensive if it feels threatened. This is particularly important to note if you have dogs with you.

Whales and dolphins - collectively known as cetaceans - are certainly more elusive than grey seals so viewing them on the Northumberland coast can’t be guaranteed. It’s well worth a try though! Harbour porpoises stay in the waters up here all year round and are best viewed through binoculars or a telescope from the shore. Some go-to places include outcrops at Dunstanburgh Castle, Cullernose Point or Emmanuel Head on Holy Island. Bottlenose dolphins and white-beaked dolphins are rather particular about temperature, weather conditions and food availability so there’s a little bit of luck involved in whether you’ll spot these fascinating creatures. Late summer is the best time to see white-beaked dolphins, and you’ll

cover of darkness to avoid predators. Puffins usually reach breeding age at five to six years old and often live for 20 years. Seals, dolphins and whales The stunning Northumberland coast is one of the most important areas in Europe for the Atlantic grey seal so it’s the perfect place to visit to see them at any time of the year. Even better, sightings of dolphins and whales off the Northumberland coast are becoming more common. You can often see seals’ heads bobbing on the surface of the water while they’re at sea and they’re often seen in

increase your chances if you choose a day when the sea is calm. Minke whales are also easier to spot on calmer days. If there have been a few recent sightings, the boatmen at Seahouses may put on special trips, so keep an eye out.

These spectacular fish-eating birds of prey boast a wingspan of over five feet. They became extinct as a breeding bird in England in 1840 and in Scotland in 1916, primarily due to Victorian egg collectors. They have re-colonised

After a brief pause in opportunities to view ospreys at Kielder, due to Covid, the Kielder Osprey Project has been working on a new viewpoint and Osprey Watch facility at Tower Knowe, thanks to funding from Northumbrian Water. It is hoped that this will be available during 2022. There is still a good chance of seeing these amazing birds during a visit to Kielder. Ospreys For many years, ospreys were seen passing through Kielder without stopping, always heading north to nesting sites in Scotland. But, as the species flourished and more of the best nesting sites were taken north of the border, it was only a matter of time before some opted to stay south. To encourage this, Forestry England installed a number of platforms around Kielder Forest, with great success. After an absence of around 200 years in Northumberland, ospreys returned to nest successfully at Kielder in 2009.

Roseate terns These elegant birds, named for their rosy hues during the summer months, are one of the rarest seabirds in Europe. They nest in colonies, often alongside other terns and gulls, which help protect their eggs and chicks from predators. These medium-sized terns only have one breeding colony in the UK, on Coquet Island, with occasional pairs also nesting at other sites including Cemlyn Bay, Anglesey, the Firth of Forth in Scotland and Larne Lough in Northern Ireland. They visit Coquet

Island during the summer and are usually the last breeding tern species to return to Northumberland each year, rarely arriving before May. Wild cattle The rare and beautiful Chillingham wild cattle can be found roaming through their natural habitat at Chillingham Park, near Alnwick. These fascinating creatures are natural clones and thought to be rarer than the giant panda. These cattle are genetically identical, each one has received identical genes from both parents, which is unique among wild living animals. At Chillingham Park you can get up close and personal with these woolly wonders as they roam through 330 acres, which also boasts fallow and roe deer, red squirrels and a wide variety of bird life. The cattle can breed at any time and are known for being true survivors. It’s thought they have been living at the park for more than 700 years and the fierce winter of 1947 almost wiped them out, reducing their herd to just 13. There are now over 100 animals,

taken care of by a specially formed association. They are completely wild and potentially dangerous so must be approached with care; so visitors are only able to see the cattle when accompanied by a warden. You can’t miss seeing these amazing animals during your visit to Northumberland because this is the total world population - you can’t see them anywhere else! chillinghamwildcattle.com Wild goats These feral goat herds are found in the Cheviots and are considered a good example of a primitive goat that helped sustain people of the British Isles from the times of the earliest Neolithic farmers. These hardy animals,

which live a totally wild existence, vary in colour with black, white or brown shaggy coats. The male (billy) goats can be identified by their large horns, sometimes half a metre long! Northumberland National Park Authority and the British Feral Goat Research Group work closely with the landowners and farmers on whose land the goats graze to make sure they survive into the future. During most of the year they remain in small family groups while larger numbers can be seen together during the autumn rut when clashes between males can take place. Their kids are born from mid-February onwards. Their mothers sometimes leave newborn kids lying in sheltered spots while they go off to graze, so don’t be alarmed if you see one on its own - mum won’t be far away!

HOLIDAY HAVEN

Owner feature...

Paul Battrick and Claire Lowrie Husband and wife duo, Paul and Claire, fell in love with Northumberland from the moment they first came to the area for a holiday 14 years ago. Now they have a stunning property, St. Pauls’ View, in Alnwick that is part of the Coquet family…

Paul and Claire had thought about buying a second house for many years but mainly focused their search in London and Italy, where they’d spent most of their holidays. After the passing of Paul’s mum in 2021, he and his Uncle Jack had the idea of looking for a house in Northumberland where the family could have a base to visit relatives in the area. Paul picks up the story: “I looked at towns and villages we knew in Northumberland online and No.9 Percy Street in Alnwick came up. On looking at the property further, it was already being used as a holiday let which appealed to us even more, as not only would we have a base for ourselves and family, but we could let the property as a holiday home the rest of the time.” Keen to purchase a property as soon as they could, Paul made an offer on St. Paul’s View prior to even booking a viewing! Four days later, they went to visit the property and their offer was formally accepted within a week. “Finding this property and all the circumstances surrounding it was like all the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle coming together. It just felt right,” says Paul. When the couple, who live in Northamptonshire, first began spending their staycations in Northumberland fourteen years ago, they used Coquet Cottages. Their first-hand experience of the high

54 COQUETCOTTAGES.CO.UK

standard of quality and exceptional service meant there was no question that, when the time came, they were keen to become part of the Coquet family. Claire continues: “We remember meeting Julie Ringland on one of our first holidays in Coquet View. Julie came over to see if everything was okay and to plant a tree in the garden. We also met Julie’s husband, Mark, on a few occasions. They’re such a lovely couple. “We have now had the pleasure of meeting Stephanie, Julie’s daughter,

and many other members of the team, and can honestly say that they are the best group of people that you could wish for in helping us start this new venture of running a holiday let. They have gone out of their way to guide us through areas that we are unfamiliar with and we couldn’t thank them enough.” St. Paul’s View is a Grade II listed period property which, according to original documents that are kept framed in the lounge, was built in or before 1833. Claire explains: “One of the indentures,

For those who know English history, they’ll know that Percy is the family name of the Dukes of Northumberland, often said to be the most powerful family after the King in times gone by. For those less interested in history, but who like a laugh, you may recall Lord Percy of Blackadder! That’s certainly what springs to a lot of people’s minds when they hear the name.”

It’s a luxurious retreat for a small family or couples staying together and offers the convenience of a vibrant town nearby that is still far enough away to feel like you’re getting away from it all. Claire says: “Alnwick is not just a fabulous town with everything you could want without even having to get in the car, but there are so many other places nearby to visit also. “We adore this part of the world. During summer, there are usually 35 stall holders selling everything from artisan soap to local landscape photography and delicious treats. “If you’re looking to pick up a memento from your weekend in Alnwick, look no further than A Taste of Northumbria. This shop, in the main square, sells a wide range of products from across Northumberland, including the legendary Alnwick rum and gin, Lindisfarne mead, ales, wine, teas and tray bakes.” Also found in the market square is the Pig in Muck Bar, Claire and Paul’s favourite watering hole. “This is such a beautiful place on a lazy sunny afternoon,” says Paul. “Most cocktails are made with locally made gin. My favourite is their Pigroni! This place is well known for its cocktails, including a salted caramel espresso martini and a lemon meringue pie cocktail. It’s well worth staying for at least two!” It’s clear that Claire and Paul are very fond of Alnwick and proud to own a stunning property in such a vibrant, beautiful town. “Alnwick is just lovely to wander around with all the individual shops,” continues Claire. “There’s so much to explore including galleries, a museum, the theatre, delicatessens, a cheese shop, antique shops, a butcher, interior shops - plenty to while away the hours. “And if you run out of things to do in Alnwick you can always visit Alnmouth beach, Warkworth Castle, the Hermitage, Embleton Bay and Dunstanburgh Castle, Howick Hall Gardens, Berwick, Morpeth, Amble, Seahouses… we could go on but think you get the idea!. “And after each wonderful day out we hope our guests will enjoy a stint in the sauna, a dip in the hot tub and sitting down in the garden with a drink made

My book ‘Verses the Virus’ had a mention in the Daily Mirror and a feature in Prima magazine. It also includes a nod to Warkworth and is still raising money two years on. “The inspiration behind the poem for Coquet Cottages was simple. Having been lucky enough to visit many parts
