MINDFULNESS REALLY DOES MATTER. When I was planning this issue, I knew I wanted an emphasis on mindfulness, but I felt apprehensive. Is it a bit 2019? Hasn't it been done to death? Is it up there with 'pivot' and 'unprecedented' as words so overused, they have come to mean nothing?

Miffy Plush www.hipkids.com.au As a huge Miffy fan for life, there is no way I can go past this super cute corduroy Miffy. Available in various colours and textures, you will be sure to find your perfect Miffy. For the kids of course...

But, when I really thought about it, I realised mindfulness can't be a trend. It is actually an ancient practice that has stood the test of time in serving humanity, and for many in our contemporary world, it’s an essential way of life. So here we are. Issue 15, where mindful really does still matter. I called on my friend Jacquie Ward, founder of The Brave Space, to share her expertise on the subject. For me she summed it up perfectly with this 'Mindfulness demands only that we raise our consciousness to prioritise living in the moment.' Succinct and brilliant right? Yet, I know in this world we live in, this is far easier said than done. I believe instilling this principle from a young age is critical for our children's successful life-long mindfulness practice. Thankfully, we are lucky to have access to many tools that will help us do just this. I have rounded up some of my favourites in our Be Mindful, Shop Mindful feature. As for living in the moment, what could be more aligned than play? We uncovered three benefits of play that may just surprise you. Be sure to check them out, along with some play must-haves that will offer boundless opportunities for imaginative play.

Cheeky Peach Decals by You Give Me Grace www.yougivemegrace.com I've been in love with these decals from day one. When we had the pleasure of shooting them for this magazine, my love grew even more! The quality is beautiful, application is fun and easy, and they are removable so an investment piece that can grow with your family.

Kinsfolk Wooden Peg Dolls by Little Big Learning www.littlebiglearning.com.au Just like all of us, these beautiful, hand turned peg dolls each have their own identity to share. Kinsfolk are made from sustainably sourced woods types. There are no dyes or stains used, just different trees, carved into different shapes to bring representation right into your kids play.

Tan Fawn Sandals by Oak and the Little Folk www.oakandthelittlefolk.com.au These unisex baby sandals have me feeling very clucky! Made from gorgeous waxed leather with a soft suede sole, they are the perfect blend of 'vintage cute' and 'sensible choice' for growing feet. They are also available with a hard sole for the bigger kids.

I was lucky enough to squeeze in a trip to Brisbane to visit Françoise Baudet, Minty's inhouse photographer and master of minimalism. Françoise generously shares her tips on running a mindful home and how she manages to combine minimal design with kids. No easy feat! And, as always, it is a delight to share the beautiful rooms created by interior designers and mums alike, all with a shared goal. To offer kids a place where they can be themselves, be safe and ultimately loose themselves in many moments of joy. I hope these pages bring some light in these heavy times and inspire you and your family to breathe a little deeper, love a little harder and play with reckless abandon.

Chunky Knit Rainbow Jumper by Aster & Oak www.asterandoak.com.au This cosy knit will be sure to keep your little one warm as the sun goes down on Spring days. The earthy tones match everything, and the soft organic cotton and oversized fit make it perfect for layering. It would be so cute with bloomers!

Mindful Matters Why mindfulness matters for kids, and in the spaces that we create for them.

"You only need the light when it’s burning low, Only miss the sun when it starts to snow..." – Passenger

"You only need the light when it’s burning low, Only miss the sun when it starts to snow." He’s singing about lost love of course, but the sentiment is very much relevant to our lives today. As much of the globe finds itself in times of unprecedented uncertainty and upheaval in light of the corona virus pandemic, many of us are searching for peace and a sense of security in our day-to-day lives that seems to have gone amiss. Our children are no different of course – for many, this is the first time in their young lives that they have experienced things like lock-downs, that they’ve been unable to connect with friends and family, or have the adventures they might have had previously. We are all craving the freedom and sense of calm we once took for granted. While we may not be able to influence the state of the pandemic, there are absolutely things we can be doing to restore equilibrium and wellbeing in our homes. Mindfulness – the practice of ‘paying attention, on purpose’ – is the antidote to getting

caught up in our feelings and anxieties. The goal of mindfulness isn’t to control your thoughts, it’s to stop letting them control you. Put simply, mindfulness is a state of consciousness in which we intentionally observe what is happening in the present moment in our bodies, our minds and the world around us. By existing in this way, we can acknowledge how we’re feeling, and then, let it go. It’s a deceptively simple concept, but one that has been linked to a whole host of benefits including reduced anxiety and depression, higher self esteem, greater resilience, improved cognitive abilities and lowered stress levels. It’s likely that you know at least a little about the practice of mindfulness; it’s hard to scroll Instagram or read any media article related to wellbeing without hearing mention of the term. This is no short-term fad however; it originates from ancient Eastern Buddhist tradition and has been practiced by individuals seeking everything from enlightenment to inner peace for literally thousands of years. So how to do we introduce this into our children’s lives, and into the spaces we create for them?

"Often it will mean embracing simplicity, choosing a few quality pieces that reflect your aesthetic over an abundance of ‘things’, which in turn allows the space for creativity and calm to preside."

The Brave Space www.thebravespace.com.au @the_brave_space_

Children are naturally mindful. You only need to walk in nature with them for a short while to realise this. They get lost in the rhythm of their steps, are fascinated with the texture of leaves they collect, the feel of sand and dirt beneath their toes. The secret is to tap into this inclination and make space for it to bloom. Bedrooms and play areas that have been mindfully created might include soothing colours, unique textiles offering tactile experiences, and décor that speaks to the individual child’s interests. Often it will mean embracing simplicity, choosing a few quality pieces that reflect your aesthetic over an

P14

abundance of ‘things’, which in turn allows the space for creativity and calm to preside. It gives our children the opportunity to grow and play, mindfully. The beauty of mindfulness is that we don’t need to wait for the light to burn low, or the sun to go, to start. Mindfulness can undoubtably help restore a sense of wellbeing during challenging times, but it is just as valuable and important for wellbeing and happiness when things are going well, too. It demands only that we raise our consciousness to prioritise living in the moment. What could be more nourishing?

THREE SURPRISING BENEFITS OF IMAGINATIVE PLAY

M

But there are other benefits to imaginative play that aren’t as commonly discussed. Here are three lesser-known reasons why imaginative play is so important for the development of our children. Imaginative play exercises the muscles of emotional intelligence According to Neuroscientist, Dr Stephen Porges, play is a neural exercise that helps children work through their fears, whether they be conscious or unconscious. Dr Porges refers to the neuroception of safety as an indicator of how well we develop in an unknown and often frightening world. Paediatric Psychologist, Dr Mona Delahooke further explains that when children feel safe in body and mind they can undertake essential requirements for healthy development – to play, grow and restore. When they don’t feel safe, they move into fight or flight, a state in which spontaneous play shuts down. P 17

Dr Delahooke concludes “Play is exercise for the child’s brain and body (they are connected) that enhances the development of emotional health. Play is fun, but it also allows children to explore uncertainty and fears under conditions of safety, gaining mastery over fears and across emotional states.” https://monadelahooke.com/cantlet-play-disappear-childrens-lives/ Imaginative play helps with smoother school transitions A 2020 study on the Effects of an Unstructured Free Play and Mindfulness Intervention on Wellbeing in Kindergarten Students, found that incorporating opportunities for unstructured play in conjunction with mindfulness practice could facilitate a smoother transition process in kindergarten children. The study found “through play and self-reflection, children strategize about change and transition which characterize early childhood.” In examining physical, emotional, and social wellbeing, increased physical activity (contributing to physical wellbeing), happiness (contributing to emotional wellbeing), and playfulness (contributing to social wellbeing) were identified following this combined intervention. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/ articles/PMC7432887/

MINTY

ost of us are aware that imaginative play fosters creativity, improves problem solving and promotes both fine and gross motor physical development. It’s been well documented, and we may have experienced these benefits first hand with our own children, or children in our care.

Imaginative play isn’t just for kids

MINTY

Dr Stuart Brown ascertains that we all, children and adults, have untapped play resources that we can draw on in difficult circumstances. Our ‘play reservoirs’ have been provided to us by nature, and have seen the human race through varied historic situations. When we tap into them, we remain positive, upbeat and resilient. Dr Brown explains “When examining the lives of non-players, comparing them to play-fulfilled individuals, research has been able to show how play itself contributes to getting along better with ourselves, (play as a good anti-depressant) and certainly provides the tools to better get along non-violently, cooperatively and innovatively with each other.” https://www.playcore.com/news/ play-is-a-universal-gift-of-naturein-times-of-challenge-and-stress

A New Education MINTY

Raising Resilient, Kind and Compassionate Kids with Mindful & Co Kids

A holisitic mission Born out of the innate groundings that our mind, body and spirit are holistically intertwined, Mindful & Co Kids has a mission to inspire, strengthen, and foster happier, healthier more resilient young minds through mindfulness. The end goal? To change the staggering and alarming mental health statistics for young people. Mindful living Throughout her years of study, Mindful & Co Kids founder, Jacqueline Yeats, found herself spending countless hours researching the art of mindfulness, and the indisputable benefits it has for the mind, body and spirit. With the light, however, comes the dark. As a mother, child psychotherapist and qualified youth counsellor, the confronting truth about mental health and youth suicide statistics in Australia truly struck home. It was her work as a psychotherapist that opened Jacqueline's eyes to the benefits of mindfulness.

P24

Grounded by the belief that the principles of mindfulness and self-awareness can confront negative emotions before they take hold, Jacqueline began to introduce the concept of mindful living to her own child from a young age. The results were incontrovertibly positive. Before her eyes, she saw her daughter, during moments of overwhelm, hold the ability to self-soothe, regulate emotion, and practice self-awareness. Not just to herself, but to those around her, even their pet dog, Charlie. Mindful living had an immediate and positive effect on her child. This started a ripple effect throughout every area of her life. Jacqueline spent a further two years conducting research on the scientific benefits of mindfulness as a treatment for anxiety and depression as part of her research-based Master’s degree. As a result, Jacqueline holds the firm belief that mindfulness has the ability to help decrease youth suicide rates and helps young people overcome stress, anxiety, and depression.

Jacqueline and her team believe the greatest gift we can give our little humans is the knowledge and strength to move through life, gently and consciously. To teach them how to be comfortable in silence, how to love themselves fully, and how to unashamedly trust their inner voice. "Through yoga and mindfulness exercises, we invite our children to connect deeper with themselves, and the world around them. We give them the tools to take into scary situations, difficult relationships, big life decisions, and feel assured and safe in their choices" explains Jacqueline. A new education By instilling the practices of gratitude, self-affirmation and kindness, and

P27

inspiring a future where every child has access to an education in self-awareness, Jacqueline believes together, we can influence and empower the next generation to live the fulfilled life they deserve. Driven by the desire to help other parents educate their children in the art of mindfulness – it is Jacqueline’s hope that she is able to inspire a new generation on their journey to success, growth, and happiness through Mindful & Co Kids. A range of beautiful resources designed to teach our children to unwind, see the world beyond the gadgets and become emotionally smarter is on offer at Mindful & Co Kids. A few minutes a day dedicated to mindfulness is all it takes to see significant improvements in the physical, mental and emotional wellbeing of our children. The Mindful & Co Kids games and resources make these daily practices achievable and enjoyable for the whole family.

MINTY

Beyond the yoga mat At Mindful & Co Kids, mindfulness goes beyond a class, or a yoga mat. It is a way of being that empowers and encourages young minds rather than hinder them. It is distinct. A new perspective. And ultimately, a better way of life.

Françoise’s innate sense of style, photographic talent and all-round passion for design make her an obvious choice to include in our ‘AT Home With’ series, but it is for reasons other than these that we couldn’t wait to share Françoise’s kids’ rooms with you. For one, Françoise is an avid devotee to the practice of mindfulness. It plays an integral role in her family life and her aesthetic values, which is naturally reflected in the way she has designed her home and her children’s rooms. And two, Françoise is a self-confessed minimalist. We all know minimalism and children don’t always go hand in hand so we are thrilled to showcase the approach Françoise has taken to minimalise their home with two young children, and show how it’s possible to achieve despite the perceived difficulties.

P33

So here we are, in the beautiful home of Françoise, her husband Matt and their two children, Xavier and Lucette. Xavier is a seven-year-old boy with ‘a tonne of energy’ as described by Françoise. He is inquisitive and loves sport. He particularly enjoys mountain biking, surfing, swimming and soccer. Lucette is a sweet and bright fouryear-old with a love for all things rainbows and unicorns. Their rooms have been thoughtfully designed and curated by Françoise to reflect their interests and passions while maintaining the minimalist philosophy. What was the brief for Xavier & Lucette’s rooms? Having recently moved the family to Brisbane, I wanted the kids to feel excited about their new rooms. I felt it was important for them to have their own special space. My brief was also to inject some personality with fresh colour, and design it to grow with them so that it wasn’t too young and wouldn’t need updating for a while. I wanted them to be practical and prioritised the custom joinery in the budget to create the desks and shelves.

MINTY

his may not be the first time you’ve seen the name Françoise Baudet on the pages of Minty Magazine. For the past five years, Françoise has been an integral part of Minty, bringing her expertise behind the lens as our in-house photographer.

We had recently bought Lucette the Plyroom bed and so I wanted her room to feel more grown up. My goal was sophisticated and feminine without it being too soft.

We often talk about the mood of the room. I wanted to create something calming for Xavier’s room so took inspiration from the Noosa Surfer picture. As the room is also our guest space, lush bedding was an important consideration.

What was your inspiration for each room? I wanted a brighter and more energetic mood for Lucette’s room to match her personality. I have family in New York, and spent time there myself, and as such felt drawn to the “I’m in a New York State of Mind’ print by Hotel Magique. It created the foundation for the room.

P35

Your use of colour is beautiful, how did you settle on your selections? I’m a minimalist at heart and find colour hard! But, I wanted to make sure the kids’ rooms were warm, inviting and fun. The navy Mustard Made cabinet was my starting point for the colour palette in Xavier’s room. I felt it needed a strong wall colour in a similar tone to complement it. I went with Porter’s Paint Newport Blue. Xavier also loves surfing and chose the Noosa Surfer picture. Blues and greens were then a natural choice. Lucette is very feminine so I knew I had to incorporate pink or I would be in big trouble. Wanting to stay modern, we selected a warm grey (Porter’s Paint Smoke) half wall as our base so that we could add pinks to soft furnishings which we can change over time. I added terracottas, reds and blacks to the palette to toughen the pink, match the hardware and avoid it being too pretty.

What is your favourite feature in each room? I love the built-in desks. It was the perfect solution to those nooks. They feel so grown up at their own desk and it’s nice to be able display their favourite toys and books on the shelving above. If you had to pick one thing you most love about each room, what would it be? I think I would say having colour on the wall! It instantly brought both rooms to life. I find the Newport Blue in Xavier’s room so calming. You have a beautiful playroom for the kids – what were your must have’s in this space? My must have for the playroom was nice storage for the toys. I don’t like clutter and wanted a solution that would hide the bulk of the mess but was still easy for the kids to access. There are such beautiful kids toys these days so it’s nice to be able to display them properly. P36

With a concrete floor and white walls, I brought in some wood furniture to warm up the space. I love pieces like the white Mustard Made locker – so beautiful and practical. We can store a lot in there! What are your must haves/must do’s for keeping your home calm? While my home is rarely calm, what we can control – well mostly – is our physical space. My husband and I like having a place for everything so we can keep things relatively tidy and organised. Custom cabinetry has been a life saver. We recently installed a mudroom style cabinet in our entry way which means all that junk goes straight in there as we walk in the door and not littered throughout the house! A designated cupboard for the kids really helps and teaches them to put their things away, out of sight. P39

"Plenty of nature time is another remedy for us in keeping our home calm. We love bush walking and getting to the beach as much as possible."

My other go-to is Marie Kondo’s book, The Lifechanging Magic of Tidying Up. It’s an oldie but a goodie. Living in Sydney in a tiny apartment helped to train us into living with what you need and love and skipping on the clutter.

MINTY

Plenty of nature time is another remedy for us in keeping our home calm. We love bush walking and getting to the beach as much as possible. We know you practice mindfulness at home regularly. Why is it important to you? Any hot tips? Life as a parent and small business owner is pretty full. I try to not to put too much pressure on myself to practice mindfulness perfectly. But it is an important part of surviving family life. I know it really helps me and helps the kids. Xavier has a lot of energy, so we try to incorporate mindfulness into our evening routine to help him wind down. Small things I aim to do regularly after dinner is light some incense or a candle, keep the lights low and have no screens. Quiet activities like looking at books or puzzles are helpful if I need to kill some time with the kids before they sleep. It’s small but helps to set the tone. My husband and I both meditate, so we like to share that with the kids. We love Insight Timer’s kids’ section. Or a simple meditation like putting a small cold stone, tile or crystal on their forehead and asking them to try not to let it slip is a good one. We also have a grateful jar which we all enjoy.

icole Rosenberg knows something about the importance of children’s spaces within the family home. Founder of Liberty Interiors, the interior decorator and mum of three has honed her passion and expertise for creating beautiful spaces that are also practical and reflective of its inhabitant’s individuality. First-time parents, Jessica and Carly Wilde, were eager to reap the benefit of Nicole’s years’ of experience as they planned for the arrival of their baby. HUGO’S ROOM Wanting a room that was warm and inviting, the pair worked with Nicole to create a timeless space that could evolve with their child and reflect a few of their favourite things. So with travel, books and animals slotted into the design agenda, Nicole started with a foundation of earthy tones and classic navy blue via the Thibaut Pinellas wallpaper from Natty & Polly. The natural tones of the Bayliss Rugs Stripe Taupe White Rug and the Leather Stitched Stacked Handle by Made Measure add the desired warmth to the space.

“We wanted something that we could adapt as Hugo got older, and we could with time incorporate his favourite things.” Working against tight timelines, made more difficult by the global pandemic, Nicole certainly had her work cut out for her. But though the realm of international travel may have hit the pause button, inside little Hugo’s sanctum of love it became a focal point thanks to the beautiful world map artwork Nicole was able to source. Undoubtedly the highlight of their firstborn’s room, Jessica and Carly are avid travellers and fell in love with the geographic piece that will enable them to share their passion with Hugo while they wait for the world to catch up. Taking turns to sit in the Sarah Ellis Alva feeding chair, both confess to being initially uncertain about such an extravagant purchase but in retrospect deem it to be one of the greatest additions to a room with relaxation at its core.

P

hotographer and mother of two, Jess Obrien, has a passion for styling both her children and the interiors they inhabit. With an eye for beautiful details, notable in her dreamy Instagram feed, Jess is drawn to an aesthetic that is rich in warm tones and rustic timber accents. When she is not on the tools in her own home, Jess spends her time capturing real-life moments through her photography business Dusk Til Dawn.

RIVER’S ROOM Creating a space for her son, River, Jess wanted to incorporate those warm hues and the particular Scandinavian trends of styling that most appeal to her. Taking her design cues from the fun and frivolity of circus and carnival, Jess found an adorable cream and deep caramel canopy tent and bunting from Bee&M Kids to set the tone and dictate her colour palette of sage, caramel, cream and mustard. P 69

The Namely Co personalised blanket in sage, combined with the Seakaboo Kantha Half Moon quilt, complements the palette beautifully and creates the perfect home for River’s tonal soft toys. Jess effortlessly incorporates the rattan trend with functionality through her choice of the stunning desk and wall shelves from Poppy’s Little Treasures. The rattan softens the aesthetic and provides the most gorgeous setting for the treasures and trinkets in the room. Perhaps the biggest scroll-stopper of all is the timber feature wall. Jess created this look with Bunnings Laminate flooring, cut to size and hung from the ceiling down. Paired with Dulux Bryophyte, it instantly captures the coveted hygge atmosphere. Adorned with rattan animal heads, the muted bunting and canopy, and a handy leather wall hanging, the stunning feature wall becomes a playful, yet sophisticated backdrop for River’s room.

“I do love the canopy tent and also the rattan wall animals. They bring the overall theme together.” says Jess.

MINTY

Reflecting the wild and vibrant personality of her almost 5-year-old without wanting to overcrowd the room, Jess achieved a harmonious balance of colour, light and shadow in the pieces she chose. From the rattan animal heads from Nestling and Nook and spotted floor bean bag from Hunter & Nomad, to the gorgeous calendar from Oskar’s Wooden Ark – these beautiful pieces string a story together. The inclusion of the Rugabub padded playmat grounds delightful, imaginative play in comfort, providing River the perfect place to explore his toys and books. Whilst styling is always front of mind, it wasn’t the main objective for this space. Jess sums it up beautifully; “As much as I love creating a styled space, I still wanted something fun and inviting. My son’s imagination is amazing, and that was why I created this space for him. To see him being inspired to play out his own stories is incredibly rewarding.”

Let's Share Zhana Garkinis, owner of Fourteen Oh Five, was approached by Kim, mother of three, to design a new room for her youngest son, Eli (two), before the arrival of their baby girl. Zhana found that after getting to know the family, the brief shifted from a room for Eli to a shared bedroom for Eli and his older brother Isaac (four). In this interview, Zhana discusses how she reworked the brief to cater for their unique family needs and delivered a delightful space for two brothers. Tell us about this project and how it came about? My client Kim is a mum of two boys and at the time, pregnant with her third child. She contacted me to design a bedroom space for her youngest son, Eli. The idea of narrowing down her inspiration from Pinterest and Instagram was daunting and she wasn’t sure where to start. With a lot already on her plate, the idea of sourcing everything and then pulling it all together was feeling overwhelming. What was the brief for this room? Kim wanted to create a tidy and uncluttered space that reflected their love of animals. She told me that she was looking for a concept that was unique and special. The idea was to design a room for the youngest boy, Eli, who was ready to move into his own big room, however there was a sense of nervousness as he had some health issues since babyhood. Working so closely with clients helps me to understand their needs (plus I have two boys of my own) so I presented an option for her boys to share a room instead. This meant that Eli and Isaac could be together, which gave Kim some comfort and reassurance, especially with a baby on the way. P79

Before we launch into discussing the project, tell us a little about your business, Fourteen Oh Five After working for many years in the corporate world and then having two boys of my own, I went back to study and explored the world of interiors and design. Following that, my business Fourteen Oh Five was born. I’m very passionate about design and the way that a beautiful yet functional space makes you feel. It is very rewarding when you walk into a room and get that sense of calm and feel at ease. Good design can directly impact how we feel day to day. I truly believe that every space has the potential to be beautiful. What was your inspiration for this project? I connected with my client Kim on a personal level as I have two young boys of my own. I can appreciate P83

How did you select your colour palette? Kim loves navy and green tones and I took some inspiration from the jungle, as both boys love all things animals! I then introduced mustard and navy accents as well as muted grey tones to soften the space. Tell us more about the wallpaper selection To create something truly unique for the boys, I reached out to Kristy the owner of Minnie & Me Interiors. After going back and forth with a few variations, we landed on a bespoke wallpaper with animal spots which is perfect for the space.

What is your favourite feature in the room and can you tell us why? The bespoke wallpaper is the highlight for me. It’s fun and bright, but the colours are still subtle enough to feel calm. The added bonus is that it’s removable so if they decide to update or change the room it’s an easy fix.

selections were well considered. It was still important to source good quality furniture and décor items that would grow with the boys. The other challenge was trying to fit in two king single beds (which were on the must-have list) plus a bedside table but we made it work!

What was the biggest challenge with designing this room? The biggest challenge was the budget because initially the brief was for one room. When we agreed to go ahead with a room for the boys to share, there wasn’t a significant increase to the budget so I made sure that the

What is your overall favourite thing about this space? I really love the reading nook that’s tucked in the corner with the jungle wall decal, because I can see the boys playing and making memories there as well as sharing stories and reading their books at bedtime.

t is an exciting milestone when your child is ready to move from a nursery with a cot to their big girl or boy room with a bed. For the child, it is when they start to gain more freedom in how they use the room, while for the parents, it is an opportunity to invest in helping their evolving little human use the space in a mindful manner. For Matilda ‘Milly’ her new room just had to be green and Mum, Jemma Johnson of Styled By Jemma, more than succeeded with the custom designed wallpaper from Minnie and Me Interiors. Jemma asked for the ‘Milly’ wallpaper to be a delicate floral on a sea-green background. The result is a stunning motif which is modern yet will age gracefully as Matilda grows up. Jemma explains, “I wanted to create a room that Milly loves now, but one that is classic and will also suit her as a pre-teen and even as a teenager.” The bonus being that the wallpaper is removable and reusable so if the Johnsons ever move house, they can take it with them!

The choice of bed is all-important, being the raison d’être of a bedroom. Jemma took her time in choosing Matilda’s bed to ensure it set the vintage tone she was aspiring to. The Macy bed from Village Little Interiors is a work of art and an heirloom in the making. “It’s so special knowing that each piece of Matilda’s bed was hand-cut, joined and hand-turned. In a world where so much is made by machinery, it gladdens me to know we have such a special piece of furniture created by the hands of skilled artisans from my hometown of Perth WA”, says Jemma. When selecting other colours for the room Jemma wanted contrast to the green but in a way that created cosiness and warmth. Enter the caramel tones of the Rumi and Fae French Oak wooden hook rack, rust tones from the Pop Ya Tot canopy and tan of the Ohh Happy Home Cotton Berber washable rug. To complement the colour palette and continue the feminine theme,

Jemma chose the chalk Bonne Mere pillow and bedspread set from Willow and Reign with its beautiful, scalloped detailing.

Being realistic about what can be achieved in a room is a hurdle for every design. Blocking out the noise of so much choice and honing the vision is a process which often benefits from some expert help. Jemma has found that her dual skillset of interior styling as well as product photography and videography has given her ‘snapshot vision’ where she can see each part of the room as an image yet can link these images together to achieve cohesiveness and a story that makes sense. For Matilda, her story was all about the calm of green whilst taking you on a whimsical European jaunt. “Milly loves her room and so do I. It is a space which invites her in to make childhood memories which she’ll recall fondly as she grows up”, confirms Jemma.

Jemma was purposeful in her design, wanting to promote imaginative play and make it a technology-free zone. To encourage Matilda to interact with the space this way, Jemma took care in keeping the space open for fun and relaxation. “Milly will often curl up and look through her favourite books or play with the antique dollhouse I upcycled for her. What both Matilda and I love is that she can be in here independently, or we can be doing something together which was a challenge considering the room size”, explains Jemma.

Coastal dream

C T I C

MINTY

Heather Gampe and her friend Sarah Jobse were two mums with a passion for design and renovation. Taking a cue from their husbands’ joint home building venture, this driven duo set about launching their own dream home-inspired business. “For us a ‘dream home’ should not just look great, it should be a dream to live in.”

"For us a ‘dream home’ should not just look great, it should be a dream to live in."

With practical ideas and tips for everyday families at the helm of their business philosophy, the pair launched their debut online video series in 2020. These YouTube episodes add another dimension to the women’s existing Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest platforms, with two further video series due out this year. When it came to her children’s personal spaces, Heather was eager to apply all she’d learned from her years

P95

of home redesign. With particular attention to proper storage to keep their bedrooms looking tidy, the Mum of three included built-in desks in each kid’s room. “We wanted them to have a place they could sit and do quiet activities, whether it be colouring in or building LEGO – we just didn’t want it spread through the house.” Taking her design cues from the timber ceilings that feature in all three kids’ bedrooms, Heather wanted to create a warm and relaxed coastal aesthetic with a minimalistic approach.

STELLA’S ROOM Music-loving Stella is the oldest of Heather’s tribe.

MINTY

Wanting to give her literary and art-loving 9-year-old a special spot to escape to, Heather had to pay serious mind to the makeup of the timber ceiling as her design choices involved drilling into it to accommodate the hanging chair from Barbara’s Storehouse, that she had chosen for her daughter. “I love coming into her room and finding her sitting in it reading. I just have to make sure her brothers don’t swing in it and hit the walls.” Both a highlight and challenge to the way Heather chose to style Stella’s room, the ceiling lends a hard, rustic feel which led the designer to offset it with soft, feminine Adairs bed linen and a statement pink palm print European

cushion from CottonBox. Adding to the overall coastal, holiday vibe of the room, the colour palette of muted pinks is perfectly complemented by the pops of white, rattan and gold interwoven throughout the interior. “She may not want pinks in her room forever but for now I love the softness and almost gentleness it creates against the hardness of the timber ceiling.” As a family who love to curl up in bed with a book at night, Stella’s fabric bedhead from BedsAhead is a feature that is also repeated in her brothers’ rooms. Encouraging her children to immerse themselves in literature as a way of both learning and spending quality time with their parents, Heather was adamant that their bedroom interiors would reflect this.

AMI’S ROOM

MINTY

"He loves to build LEGO and just tinker in general, so having a space for him to sit and do that quietly is great."

Ami is Heather’s middle man. He loves sports, cars, LEGO and has a keen interest in anything mechanical. Wanting to facilitate her 8-year-old’s passion for connecting those little bricks while maintaining a sense of decorum, Heather installed a bedside table with drawers for tidy storage. Noting that the greatest challenge when designing a kid’s bedroom is creating a stylish look which can easily be kept in order, Heather paid close attention to practicality. “He loves to build LEGO and just tinker in general, so having a space for him to sit and do that quietly is great.”

P99

Thinking ahead, the reno-expert Mum chose a double bedhead for Ami’s King single bed with a view to upgrading it as her son grows. In the meantime, the empty space provides the perfect spot for that all-important bedside table. One of Heather’s favourite colours features prominently in this room, with a soft green feature wall and matching cushion perfectly tying into her chosen muted coastal colour palette. The vintage looking surf van print from Little Ink Empire is the perfect artwork for automotive-minded Ami, its monochrome style expertly complementing the minimalist aesthetic of this relaxed haven.

ACE’S ROOM Ace is the baby of the family, Heather’s inquisitive little creative. “We often find Ace playing alone quietly in his room – usually drawing or engaging in make believe play.” Heather’s choice in beds for each child’s room, feeds into their unique personality traits. Each room features a King Single bed with a trundle underneath allowing them plenty of space to explore their individual play pursuits by day and share their space with cousins or friends by night.

Positioned at the front of the house with a view of the Dragon Tree beyond the double sliding doors separating his room from the outside world, 6-year-old Ace’s room is filled with natural light. Given their home’s generous acreage, all three children benefit from the same light-filled space.

younger generation.

Light is certainly a theme Heather applied to the whole interior, still with that holiday vibe in mind. When it came to the carpet of her children’s rooms, she opted for a solution dyed nylon fabric that could better withstand the test of time, not to mention the marks typically incurred by the

A love for nature and the ocean is evident throughout the room, from the surfboards artwork from Boho Art & Styling to the ‘mountain stream’ blue feature wall behind it. It is the perfect sanctuary for Ace to hide away and enjoy his own peace and quiet.

P 10 0

Her attention to detail is impeccable, extending to the Laminex desktops which can easily be kept intact regardless of how many crayon slips occur during an enthusiastic art session.
