However, it’s not always as easy as it may look on the gram! When it comes to kids’ rooms, the reality is, we have to get real. So, this issue of Minty is looking at just that: the genuine challenges we face in kids’ rooms and how we can overcome them to create the beautiful and practical rooms we crave.

One of the biggest challenges in designing beautiful spaces for children is storage. Where do we store the endless toys, books, games and clothes? I called in some experts in the field, Nicole Rosenberg (Liberty Interiors), Sandy Folder (Mini Casa) and Tennille Burnup (Tennille Joy Interiors) to share their insight on the topic, in addition to rounding up my favourite storage solutions and products for the modern home. There are some gorgeous and innovative options that I am excited to share with you.

5 QUICK TIPS FOR MAKING A BIG IMPACT ON A SMALL BUDGET IN A RENTAL PROPERTY
1. Upcycle Look at what you already have and consider how you could reuse it. In this case, the existing bed was repainted in Porters Paint – Bayleaf for a whole new look, and a large splash of colour against the rental’s white walls. 2. Choose versatile pieces When faced with a room with no built-in wardrobes, think outside the box. A Mustard Made locker looks fantastic and provides flexible storage for the bedroom. Free-standing and easy to move, this versatile piece will come with you to your next home with ease. 3. Shop second hand Scour Marketplace and Gumtree before you spend big on furniture. Buying second hand is great for the environment and your budget. In this room, the Lilly and Lolly oak chest of drawers was purchased for a fraction of the retail price on Gumtree.

4. Invest in moveable items A room on a budget doesn't have to feel like a budget room. Investing in the items that aren't affected by your rental floor plans – such as bed linen, rugs, and art – will serve you well. It will lift the overall aesthetic of the space in your current room as well as rooms to come. 5. Ask for permission Tenancy agreements are always changing and you just might be surprised what you can actually do in a rental if you ask. Taking the plunge and installing your art and/or a shelf or two will instil a feeling of safety and permanence for your little love.

HOW TO TACKLE STORAGE IN KIDS ROOMS –

The struggle is real and the truth is there is no perfect solution. Every child is unique. Their toys are unique, and our homes are unique. Storage solutions need to be tailored to suit your family. Sandy Folder, interior designer at MINI CASA explains, “Prior to visiting my clients in their homes, I always ask them not to tidy up so I can truly see how the space is being used and what limitations there may be. Then, I like to provide simple and effective storage solutions and mix them up. It’s important to provide age appropriate and safe storage options tailored to each child. I consider the age of the child first and then review the space. For example, does the child need wall shelves, bookshelves, baskets or hooks?” Once storage solutions have been selected, Sandy assesses any safety concerns, and makes sure tall and heavy items are fixed to the walls to prevent tipping over. Interior designer, Nicole Rosenberg of Liberty Interiors, asserts, “Aside from the essential items in a child’s room like a bed and bedside table,

storage is one of the key factors that we think about and is always high on our priority list. Solutions can be found in the form of large storage baskets with lids, storage baskets that sit on a shelf, under-bed storage or even creating extra usable toy storage in a cupboard - the more storage the better!” Nicole goes on to say, “After we have re-designed their rooms, we like to emphasise to our adorable little clients that there is now a spot for everything - we want them to take responsibility for the items in their space and feel like they know where to return things. We often create custom tags on each box so that everything feels organised and tidy for bedtime – nothing like trying to fall asleep in an untidy, cluttered room!” Tennille Burnup, interior designer at Tennille Joy Interiors, focuses on two types of storage when she’s designing kids’ spaces. “The first is open storage. This enables children to grab things on display easily, and it’s also very comforting for children to have their favourite toys and books on display. The second is hidden storage to hide the clutter. My favourite is drawers under beds. They can store Lego, linen and larger items like puzzles.” Our experts overwhelmingly agree – more is more when it comes to storage. Remember, your storage solutions can actually enhance your room design as well as keep it tidy. The easier we make it for our kids to store their belongings, the calmer and more beautiful our homes will be.

MINI CASA Design Principal Sandy Folder knows a thing or two about creating beautiful and practical children’s spaces. She walks us through two bedrooms she transformed with the right colour and textures.
I
Following an extensive renovation in Sydney’s Lower North Shore, my client found that her girls, aged six and nine, were not interested in spending time in their bedrooms and enlisted my help to change that. PINK AND BLUE TWEEN SCENE I designed this room for a fun-loving, active nine-year-old girl who loves blue and pink. In terms of style, I took my cue from the client’s own artwork – glamour mixed with a touch of sophistication. I used the colour in the artwork which sits between pink and red, to help select a colour palette that her eldest daughter could grow into. Porter’s Paints Explorer Blue is a dusty blue with a warm undertone from a touch of red tint. Colour has

the power to affect our emotions, mood, and energy and as you enter the room you immediately feel a sense of tranquillity. When asking a client to agree to a bold colour choice I always have a trial run. I typically paint A4 sample sheets and put them up on the wall so my client can see them in different lighting situations. The pink accents like the velvet Lucia Lounge Chair are bright yet delicately luxurious. Curved lines are becoming one of the most defining décor trends this decade and provide balance in angular spaces. Creating a workspace for homework was important. The Benjamin desk offers a minimalist look with drawers and signature contrasting button-like handles. These hints of natural timber create visual interest and add warmth to the room. Little references within a room help build the narrative. My choice of the sheepskin throw purposefully references the fluffy jumper worn by the girl in the artwork and makes the chair even more inviting.

I designed this bedroom for a gentle six-year-old girl who loves pink. By opting for a softer shade of pink and a light grey to provide subtle contrast, I managed to incorporate the requested colour whilst creating a visual expression of personality. The walls were painted in Porters Paints Himalayan Salt, which had earthy tones and looked flat. I suggested painting the wall with Porters Paints Seashell which has a pink/purple tone. The transition of colour from grey carpet to soft pink on the walls is quite serene and gives the bedroom a dreamy aesthetic, perfect for both play and sleep. The next step was to bring in the texture by way of natural materials. A linen bedhead and matching chair by Papaya bring a durable yet relaxed look and have the added benefit of being fully removable and dry cleanable. The linen ruffle edge cushion adds a playful touch, while the waffle fleece blanket adds interest. Adding variation in textural elements allows a space to come to life. In a bedroom this can be achieved by adding scatter cushions, a throw or rug. Wall hangings like macrame are another way to bring texture in via organic or pleasantly chaotic shapes. Another key element in a space is lighting. While the main source of lighting is important, the use of accent lighting is a clever way to draw focus or enhance the theme. The balloon lights do this perfectly in this space.

A beautiful beginning In 2021, Kylie Hackett was juggling a full-time workload as a software developer and business analyst and being mum to her daughter Luna, when she felt the need to pursue her creative side. Wanting to create a space for Luna that she could grow with over time, and feeling disappointed by the flimsy, primary coloured children’s furniture and décor offered by the mainstream stores, Kylie was inspired to create Cowrie & Conch. The name is definitely a reflection of her gorgeous Tweed Coast surroundings and Kylie says she is lucky to be surrounded by lots of creative role models in her hometown. Cowrie & Conch is a one-woman band, born out of Kylie’s passion for giving children the enjoyment that colour can bring to their world. Kylie says, “I’ve always been that person that tries to push boundaries. I wear clashing prints, mismatched colours – I never really take what I wear seriously. In fact, the less it matches, the better!” She brings this sense of fun and irreverence to Cowrie & Conch, and is guided by a philosophy of “see the box – and then step outside of it!” Of course, starting

a new business, especially in an area outside of her expertise, was a challenge, but Kylie has relished the chance to adapt and grow, despite the many late nights spent dreaming and planning. Unique products that last Cowrie & Conch offers décor, accessories and furniture for children aged 18m and over. There is a focus on beautiful upholstery and texture and on sourcing truly unique and hard to come by items from all over the world. Kylie’s aim is to add “spunk and creativity” to your children’s spaces with gorgeous pieces that will last for many years. She believes all children have their own sense of style and personality and she loves seeing her designs in their rooms. “I love walking into a house where colour is celebrated... I think colour gives a room its heartbeat. It can be a real mood changer.” Although it’s hard to pick a favourite amongst the many fun offerings in her range, Kylie does admit a particular fondness for the tufted Affirmation mirrors, which encourage little ones with positive vibes every time they check out their reflection!

Caring for the environment

As a long-time vegetarian and lover of the ocean, the impact we have on our planet is always at the front of Kylie’s mind, and it is no different with her business. Cowrie & Conch uses FSC timbers and all furniture is made of ethically sourced materials. Many of the plastic products are renewable and recycled from offcuts and wasted materials, then remolded. To limit waste, manufacturing is done in small batches. Importantly, the furniture is designed to have a long life and to be able to sustain wear and tear from kids – and adults! Each piece holds weight up to 150kg, so adults can use them too. All shipping both internationally and domesticwally is carbon offset. Kylie made the decision to limit excess packaging from factories and has refused plastic wrapping, boxes and pretty packaging, choosing recycled and compostable boxes and satchels. “Everything needs to be a conscious decision”, says Kylie. “I felt the pressure to make an unboxing experience for the customer, to wrap things beautifully with pretty papers, foams and colours but I felt this was an elaborate gesture which impacted the world much longer than any ‘feel good’ moment.” Instead, Kylie focuses on minimum packaging and getting the product to her customer quickly and in one piece.

nspired by marshmallow skies and scrumptious sorbets, this perfectly pastel room was bought to life by stylist Madeline McFarlane and the Minty team to celebrate the joy of colour. The pastel trend is nothing new. The 1950’s saw entire homes decked out in these infamous soft hues. From kitchens to bathrooms to appliances, it was a trend embraced whole-heartedly. Come the 80’s and pastel colours were booming again – they were championed in pop-culture (look no further than the iconic Miami Vice) and fashion (as a perfect partner to the preppy polo’s of the time). Now, as we are immersed the digital era, pastels have come back stronger than ever. Easy on the eye and full of positive associations, pastel colours are vibrant, yet soothing. A calm break in a busy world. Interestingly, the term ‘pastel’ originally referred to an artistic medium, for example, a pastel sketch. Pastels consist of raw pigment combined with water and a binder, then dried and formed into a stick. Generally, pastels had a lower saturation of pigment than other mediums, such as oil paints. It is a natural assumption that this is why the term, over time, came to refer to the less saturated colours on the spectrum.

A technique long-sequestered to the high walls of art galleries, pointillism has been given a new lease of life by way of Victorian artist, Donna Taylor. Imbuing unwavering patience, passion, and a steady hand into what is also known as dotwork or stippling, Donna has established her award-winning aesthetic on the Australian art scene, and beyond.

hen Hannah Goldberg’s daughter Libby (four) was ready to move from her cot into a big bed, Hannah - the Director of Zenn Design - was inspired to make over the bedroom Libby shares with older sister Raizy (seven). Given the Zenn Design reputation for handcrafted luxury, innovative design and quality materials, it’s no wonder that the result is a beautiful, airy sanctuary that the girls love to call their own.
For this very personal family project, Hannah wanted to maximize the use of space whilst also ensuring functionality. Keeping the room open, light and airy with a considered use of colour were priorities, as was involving Libby and Raizy in the creation of a bedroom they cherish. Hannah describes her two girls as complete opposites in both looks and personalities, but absolute besties. “Raizy is smart, playful, confident and very bubbly while Libby is charming, cheeky and an easygoing little girl. Raizy loves drawing and does weekly art classes. Libby loves to dance!” Hannah allowed the girls to lead the way when it came to the colour palette. Libby and Raizy were firm on their desire for new, pink beds, which Hannah says was a little out of her comfort zone!

Hannah worked around the pink beds by adding in neutral bed linen by Abode Living and a modern dots grey wallpaper by Pickawall. She added a custom timber bedside table made to her specifications by Melb Design Co and kept the Zenn Design luxury going with gorgeous curtains, an ottoman and scatter cushions. Hannah is constantly inspired by Australian design and it was important to her to showcase some of the incredible local brands and suppliers in her daughters’ shared bedroom.

It was, however, very special for Hannah to be able to give her girls the joy of brand new custom beds from her own range. She selected the Harper (a Zenn Design bestseller), which is a fully upholstered bed with a perfect minimalistic yet kid-friendly design, with an easy gas-lift bed frame feature. This allows for lots of extra hidden storage space that the girls use to store all their toys. As Hannah says – “best decision ever” – and all parents everywhere wholly agree!

One of the biggest challenges was selecting a wallpaper design. Hannah felt the wallpaper could make or break the space, so it needed to be just right. She’s thrilled with her final choice and credits the Pickawall team for being fantastic to work with. The addition of a beautiful artwork by Kimmy Hogan is inspired and the perfect complement to the dotted walls. In the end, Hannah’s overall favourite thing about the whole process was the way she worked with Libby and Raizy to create a soft, feminine, girly room that they had fun designing and imagining together. “It all came together so seamlessly... and they are very proud of their shared bedroom too!”

Building a home is an exciting yet stressful experience. So many decisions need to be made over a relatively short timeframe that even the best of us can reach a point of decision fatigue. aul and Leanne had spent so much time and energy on the rest of the house they realised if they didn’t ask for help when it came to the children’s rooms, they might not honour the detail and care they had managed elsewhere. They chose to partner with Sandy Folder from MINI CASA whose timeless aesthetic appealed to them. “I wanted each room to be unique to each child and I felt a designer could help me draw these differences out. We were on such a roll with the rest of the house I was worried that I wasn’t going to truly hear what each child wanted without someone else listening too”, explains Leanne. Jonathon was only two when this room was designed so he didn’t have too many opinions to give. Instead, his love of animals and a clearly curious nature informed the style choices. When Sandy started the
journey with Paul and Leanne, they had already chosen the wall colour and the timber joinery. Add in the original fireplace and it really became about making a unique and beautiful space for Jonathon that worked with these existing features. Having only one uninterrupted wall meant careful thought was required to make sure the space did not feel too busy, though high ceilings certainly helped as well! Drawing on the animal theme was a non-negotiable but doing so using an African feel enriches the story of the room as does having the different animal forms: the Charlie in the Woods framed art, ferm LIVING hand carved toys, Fiona Walker felt animal heads, plush toys, cushions and even the careful selection of books on display. The lion head mirror from Etsy continues the animal parade taking pride of place above the mantlepiece.

When you have an appetite for dessert, the aesthetic has to match, something Melbourne decorator, Nicole Rosenberg understands very well! Feeding into young Sophia’s taste for all things pink, fluffy and dessert-centric, Nicole was careful to cater to these requirements while also being careful about the tones of pink she chose for the room. “We wanted to do a pink room but we didn’t want it to be too bright,” she said. So, to diversify the colour palette Nicole sought inspiration from the Adairs’ ‘Daisy’ range, mixing in the same orange and white hues as on Sophia’s bedspread, as well as sage green courtesy of the custom-made bed and Norsu desk lamp “to give the space an extra pop of colour!”

The space may be small but it is full of life thanks to a beautiful hanging plant and the natural light flooding in through the bedside window. Everything has its place and the soft pink interior ties it all together in a subtle and pretty way.

ennille Burnup of Tennille Joy Interiors is one of Australia’s leading interior designers and has a career spanning more than twenty-five years. She also comes from a family of stylish people – she is a third-generation interior designer. She grew up watching her mother create beautiful and considered spaces and loved nothing more than exploring the furniture and textiles in the family store. Tennille has beauty and style in her bones! Capturing the moments and memories that tell the story of the room’s inhabitants is what motivates her. When it came time to create a bedroom for her five-year-old son, Tennille wanted the space to reflect his curiosity and passion for far away places - and his love of marine life and any type of animal! Inspired
by this theme of exploration and wonder for the world and its creatures, Tennille set about dreaming up a beautiful sanctuary full of fun and unique details for her son to enjoy. As a starting point, Tennille selected her colour palette, choosing the wallpaper first from her own range. And what wallpaper it is! The gorgeously illustrated world map design gives the room its central focus and has become Tennille’s favourite feature in the space. “We are currently ‘eating’ our way around the world. We put stars on the countries where we have tried and tasted the cuisine!” she says. Keeping in mind the need to include the essentials of a double bed, book storage and toy storage, Nicole let her creative juices run wild! And the result is an animal lover’s paradise, complete with unique custom features and timeless pieces that can adapt and grow with Oscar as he ages. Nicole is truly passionate about producing calm, happy yet fun spaces that are a reflection of the child’s individuality and desires. Inspired by Oscar’s love for animals, Nicole knew she wanted to focus on featuring some cute animal themes throughout the room but she was also keen not to be too traditional or obvious. Thinking outside the box, she started with designing a custom animal footprint wallpaper, which envelops the room and gives the space a sense of consistency and warmth. The wallpaper will feature in a soon to be released range by Liberty Interiors.

At the same time, Nicole was finalising the colour palette for the room, settling on the very current trend for browns and warmer palettes. “I love mixing blue with browns and tans and so I focused on these three palettes for Oscar’s room and added in wooden accents to give it a more earthy, outdoorsy feel,” Nicole explains. Working with the challenge of a small space and having to fit quite a lot in without it appearing cramped, Nicole decided to make the bed a feature. It has turned out to be her favourite part of the room! The bear bedhead is custom designed by Liberty Interiors and made by The Upholstery House. Wanting the bed to have longevity, Nicole has designed the bed so that the bear ears can detach when Oscar grows out of them, leaving behind a gorgeous arched bedhead – beary clever! Next to the bed is a stunning side table from Uniqwa Furniture Collections. Its reclaimed hardwood base with clear glass top brings the outdoors feel into the bedroom and perfectly holds a pile of bedtime books and some cute felted toadstools. Directly above swings a very cheeky monkey lamp from Fenton & Fenton – what a fun way to illuminate Oscar’s nighttime reading sessions!

On the opposite wall, Oscar the bookworm has his pick of reading material from the impeccably styled Mini Library by Oeuf. This piece displays a consideration for functionality paired with high-end modern design and is an easily accessible library for Oscar now, and as he grows. Nicole chose baskets from Mondocherry for toy storage and has scattered a few prize possessions across the shelves. Above the Mini Library hang some artworks and mounted animal heads, creating an eye-catching display. Mum-of-three Nicole knows that while it’s important to have a child’s bedroom looking gorgeous, it’s also key that it is practical and functional. Oscar’s room is exactly that – a fun and inviting space that superbly captures his interests in a unique and creative way. Nicole adds that one of her favourite things about the room is that there’s a specific spot for everything, so it’s simple for Oscar to keep his room neat and tidy. And the best bit? Oscar – and his parents – absolutely adores his room!
