ADAM JACOT DE BOINOD

Adam Jacot de Boinod is a British author, most famous for his works about unusual words. He has written three books, the first two (The Meaning of Tingo and Toujours Tingo) looking at words that have no equivalent in the English language, and his latest book (The Wonder of Whiffling) looking at unusual words in English. He worked on the first series of the television panel game QI. His research on the show involved him reading an entire Albanian language dictionary and noting down any words that he found interesting. He formed the idea that there are 27 different words for moustaches and 27 words for eyebrows in Albanian, including, “vetullan” (“very bushy eyebrows”), “vetullor” (“slightly arched eyebrows”) and “vetullosh” (“very thick eyebrows”). After leaving QI, he began to investigate other languages, examining 280 dictionaries and 140 websites. This led to the creation of his first book in 2005, The Meaning of Tingo, a book featuring words which have no equivalent in the English language, “tingo” being a word from the Pascuense language of Easter Island meaning, “to borrow things from a friend’s house, one by one, until there’s nothing left”. He then wrote up a follow-up book entitled Toujours Tingo in 2007. In 2009, de Boinod wrote The Wonder of Whiffling, a book about unusual words in English, the word “whiffling” having several meanings, including, “one who examined candidates for degrees… an officer who cleared the way for a procession, as well as being the name of the man with the whip in Morris dancing.” Volume 4, Issue 4 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

his issue is all about beautiful and comfortable spaces for families to gather and the designers who created them. As we enter the holiday season and celebrate coming together with friends and family, we look at unique homes from a surfside chic Nantucket 1970’s redo to the beautiful Kips Bay Palm Beach showhouse. Layton Campbell takes us on a journey to the Lake for a couple relocating from Houston to a complete new build designed around enter-

taining family and friends. Wendy Fennel from Bohemian Bungalow shows us the possibilities of extending our living room and taking it outside. How we co-exist with nature in our outdoor living spaces. The design luminary Ray Booth shares his young spirit and old soul. His philosophy and a little bit of advice. Architecturally trained and interiors practiced Ray is the master of modern elegance. We step into an Amagansett home he designed for a young restauranteur family from New York. A home to entertain with beautifully prepared lunches and dinners. As a result the kitchen became the primary focus. A visit to the Living room of Aiken - The Willcox hotel was a step back in time while seamlessly walking in the present. Unlike any other year in the near past we have spent more time at home then ever before. We have grown to value our shelter, home and see its reflection of ourselves and how we live. Many of us have used this time to redecorate, repurpose and refurbish. Whatever project or design we have taken on over the past few months, one thing is for sure, we treasure our homes more now then before and most important is the family we share it with.

COVID-19 FLIES WITH THE GREATEST OF EASE. To keep the virus at bay, it helps to understand the basics of how

things like the force of a cough or a sneeze (some particles can hit 200 mph), how good or bad the ventilation is and which way the proverbial wind is blowing. Contain yourself. Should you cross paths with a cloud of viral particles, researchers believe that it doesn’t take much – possibly as little as a few thousand or even a few hundred – to infect you and make you sick. Though we don’t yet know the exact number of COVID-19 particles that constitute the minimal infectious dose, we do know that a number of outbreaks have been traced to events like church services, funerals and family celebrations, where one asymptomatic person in relatively close quarters sickened many others, sometimes fatally. When it comes to COVID-19, it’s believed the bigger the viral load you’re exposed to, as in, the more particles that find their way into your system, the more severe the symptoms of the disease. So prolonged exposure is very likely to make matters worse. While a quick trip to the pharmacy would be considered fairly low risk, a full day of work in a multi-person office or manufacturing plant is not, far from it. But low risk or high, keeping the virus out is paramount, which is where masks come in. When you wear one, you’re primarily helping to prevent any virus you’re harboring (unknowingly, if you’re asymptomatic) from infecting others, but you’re also creating somewhat of a physical barrier between yourself and the viral droplets (large or small). Another mask-wearing bonus: you’ll be a lot less likely to transfer viral particles from your hands into your nose or mouth!

WORKDAY WISDOM. As we return to our office towers and public transportation, masks and gloves are simple and effective barriers that will go a long way in keeping you safe from viral invaders so use them without fail (style be damned). If you need a bit more peace of mind, you might also consider wearing safety glasses to prevent particles from entering through the eyes, either directly (yes, you get sneezed on) or indirectly, by rubbing your eyes. Keep spare masks, gloves and eyewear in sealed plastic bags and store in your desk drawer or in briefcases and backpacks so you’re not caught short. If your commute is a manageable one, instead of taking the bus or train, consider walking, biking or using a scooter to minimize exposure to both asymptomatic and symptomatic commuters and infected surfaces along the way. At the office, dispense with handshakes, fist bumps, elbow bumps and business card exchanges, and always maintain social distance. Keep in-person meetings to a minimum or, when feasible, consider conducting meetings outdoors, where distancing, sunshine and breezes can help minimize exposure. Why step outside? One small preliminary Japanese study recently found that risk of transmission indoors was almost 19 times higher compared to an outdoor environment. Indoors, be conscious of shared office equipment and high-touch surfaces: break room fridges and microwave handles; coffee-making equipment; door handles; elevator buttons; shared printers; copiers, etc. – and thoroughly wash hands (gloved or not) every

GET IN, GET OUT.

chance you get, turning faucets on and off with paper towels as a barrier to help prevent infection.

So, what do those viral clouds mean in the real world? In enclosed spaces, even with social distancing, it means increased risk for contagion, so the modern ‘open plan’ office is a major concern. If you’re one of the millions who are being called back to work in an office, at a time when a COVID-laced sneeze or two can potentially infect most of the room, insist on finding out what protocols management will be implementing to minimize infection risk. In addition to work-from-home options and flexible hours, on-site basics like increased physical distance between colleagues; physical barriers; upgraded sanitizing procedures; upgraded ventilation/airflow; ending the practice of ‘hot desking’ and making masks mandatory for all – are a good place to start.

START SELF-INOCULATING WITH HEALTHY HABIT INTEGRATION. With obesity, high blood pressure and heart disease being closely associated with poor COVID-19 outcomes, I cannot stress enough how important it is that you take your nutrition seriously, and work on getting those issues under control now. If you’ve made it through this first wave un-scathed, that’s great, but you may not be so lucky when the next COVID-19 wave likely returns in the fall. And if you’re already on a healthy path, now is the time to upgrade a bit more. The more you can fortify your body, the better equipped Volume 4, Issue 4 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

Nomadic Wealth focuses on the philosophy and practical steps necessary for anyone to achieve true freedom in their lives. As both technology and our world economy continue to evolve many Americans have fallen victim to an antiquated education system that hasn’t prepared them for the rapidly changing economy we have today. In this remarkable new work, Jason Stapleton presents a unique perspective of both financial independence and liberty by reimagining what it means to be free in the 21st century, and what needs to be done to seize borderless financial independence. This comes at a highly pertinent time in human history, as government interference in regional economics due to COVID-19 have left millions unemployed, unsure of their future, and in need of a new way of approaching financial security. “This book is a culmination of the techniques and lessons I’ve gleaned over the past ten years building myself and my companies,

Nomadic Wealth keys on several primary principles, including: • The 4 things necessary to achieve real freedom in your life. • The 3 Pillars of Nomadic Wealth. • Why working a 9-5 is far more risky and less secure than working for yourself. • Traditional entrepreneurship vs. the Nomadic Entrepreneur. • Why most people are unhappy regardless of how much money they make and the one thing you can do to start being happy now. • Why the rich get richer regardless of how many social programs we create. • The difference between a producer and a consumer and why all the money flows to producers. • The 7 things a business needs to create nomadic wealth.

• What the future of employment will look like over the next 20 years. • How you can use the principles of nomadic wealth even if you already own a traditional business. Stapleton provides a perfect platform from which to educate, having experienced the harshest of life challenges as a special forces marine, and then creating his own finance-centric empire with Trade Empowered in 2009. Trade Empowered became one of the largest and most respected trading education firms on earth boasting tens of thousands of clients in over 110 countries. Jason Stapleton is an American entrepreneur and former special ops Marine. In 2014, while still running Trade Empowered, Jason launched Wealth, Power & Influence, a podcast dedicated to helping people better understand current events and how to have more control over their lives. It quickly grew to more than 30,000 daily listeners and hit #1 on iTunes in multiple categories. The success of this podcast allowed Jason to leave Trade Empowered in 2017 to focus on financial education and influence in a broader sense, and develop his consulting arm, The Jason Stapleton Group.

POMPANO & CRAB ROULADE The Kimpton Vero Beach Hotel and Spa in Florida is home to two restaurants, Cobalt Restaurant and Heaton’s Reef, where Executive Chef Winston Guerrero recently traded in his Rhode Island snow days for beach days. A Barranquilla, Colombia native, he’s always felt compelled to give back in charitable ways. Through the African Alliance of Rhode Island, Winston taught classes on how to use locally grown African and Latino ingredients to cook healthy meals, and undoubtedly is finding his way to now plug into his new community. For Thanksgiving, he suggests considering a Floridian favorite, Pompano. He says, “The fish is firm but finely flaked with a sweet, mild flavor. The flesh is pearly white, with a moderate fat content, and cooks up white. The fish is delicious and ver-satile, allowing it to be cooked and served in a wide variety of ways.” When selecting Pompano at the store or fish market, Guerrero recom-mends checking “the structure (or grain) of the flesh, to make sure it’s smooth and intact, not broken or flaky. And, be sure the flesh feels and smells clean.” **Wash hands. Thoroughly clean/sanitize your utensils, equipment and work surfaces.**

For the Crab

INGREDIENTS:

• 1 lb super lump pasteurized crab meat; not drained • 1/2 tsp salt & pepper • 1 tsp Old Bay • ¾ c panko breadcrumbs • 1 lemon squeezed for its juice

• ¾ c mayonnaise • 1 filet of Pompano de-boned skin on or off (I prefer the skin on) • ½ lemon • 1 tbsp butter

METHOD OF PREPARATION FOR CRAB: 1. Preheat oven to 400° F 2. Place crab meat in a large stainless steel bowl over an ice bath. Using gloved hands very carefully break apart the crab meat removing any shells or cartilage. 3. Add the remaining ingredients. 4. Gently mix the ingredients together using "soft" hands. You do not want to break up the large crab pieces.

CATCH DIRTY SOUTH OYSTERS A Wilmington, North Carolina native, a James Beard Finalist for best Southeast Chef and featured on Bravo TV’s Top Chef (season 9) owner and chef, Keith Rhodes opened Catch Restaurant in 2006 in hopes that diners would catch his passion for North Carolina seafood. His menu features dishes that highlight seasonal flavors that are sourced from organic growers and local fisheries that support sustainable practices. He says, “Oysters are a perfect shellfish for holiday occasions that represent eastern North Carolina, whether stewed, roasted, grilled, fried or baked, they are totally customizable and have such a good flavor.” When selecting oysters, Rhodes encourages you to try to always pick local oysters, “They should always be cold, If buying in the shell, shells should be fully cleaned, no mud. Shells should be closed and the oyster when held, should smell like ocean water.” Three Little Spats, Nsea, Middle Sound Mariculture and Carolina Mariculture are some of his top local, farm-raised choices, along with wild-caught Stump Sound oysters. Chef Rhodes sends his best Thanksgiving wishes, “Always live to eat, and remember good food equals good times.”

INGREDIENTS: • 12 shucked oysters on the half shell • ½ cups seasoned/cooked collards or spinach • 4 slices bacon • 1 c pimento cheese • ½ c Parmesan cheese • 1 c seasoned bread crumbs

METHOD: 1. Preheat oven to 375° F 2. Cut each slice of bacon into 3/4 pieces. (depending on size of bacon slice) 3. Stack oysters with a tablespoon of greens on each oyster, then add a half tablespoon of pimento cheese on top, then a piece of bacon. 4. Top with 1 tsp of bread crumbs and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. 5. On a baking tray, crinkle a sheet of foil and pull back out over pan. Foil should be kind of crinkled so you can place each oyster on foil with light pressure. The foil acts as a brace so the oysters don’t tip over. 6. Bake until bubbly on top rack. His lat-est venture slated to open this fall, Hooks and Chops, in Commack, New York puts his spin on a traditional steakhouse, as a seafood chophouse where he says, “I'm grateful to still have the opportunity to be able to open Hooks & Chops during a pandemic.” Being on Long Island and having the accessibility of all the fresh seafood, del Lima finds great inspiration, “I love using local ingredients as much as possible on my menus and I enjoy supporting local businesses as much as possible.” This time of year, he enjoys working with local oysters and yellowfin tuna from Montauk. When storing oysters at home, del Lima advises refrigerating them in a mesh bag, or an open container at 33-37 °F covered with a damp towel for up to 5 days, but that their flavor is best when eaten within 24 hours of purchase. When it comes to tuna, he says, “Shop with your eyes and your nose. Appearance and odor are very important when selecting tuna. Fresh tuna is moist in appearance, but not overly wet. It should also be firm, shiny and uniform in color. Tuna that looks dry, flaky or is brown on the edges is most likely not fresh.”

INGREDIENTS:

• 3 each Semolina dusted Peconic Bay Oysters, cleaned, shucked and soaked in buttermilk, to cover oysters • 3 oz. Charred Yellowfin Tuna, pre-charred, chilled, and sliced lengthwise • Hickory Seasoning for Tuna, enough to dust • 6 Tbsp Semolina Dust • 2 Tbsp Asian Pear Salsa • 1 oz. Wasabi Aioli • 1 oz. METHOD:

FALL/WINTER RTW 2020-21

Trend Report by: sharon jane | @itssharonjane

The air is getting cooler, the leaves are changing color, the magic of the holiday season is beginning to twinkle in, and the romance of autumn and winter is breezing in as nostalgic yet powerful looks were seen all throughout Fall-Winter 2020-21 ReadyTo-Wear fashion week. The shows were graced with inspirational comebacks, megaphoning hope for a revival even after all we have gone through since the COVID-19 pandemic arrived. Although the grand majority of the Fall-Winter 2020 collections were presented prior to the pandemic, some labels like J Brand and Tommy Hilfiger had to shift their plans since these shows were planned to be presented right when the pandemic was at its worst. Nevertheless, the labels that presented after the beginning of the pandemic still made the effort to showcase their collections digitally.

times, staying hopeful in the present and being ready to face the future with no fear but certainty that this too shall pass. As fashion is now an incredibly important and moving voice for positive changes in societal issues, the industry has once again united to become a shoulder to lean on as we saw so many designers rushing to donate, digitize, protect, inspire, and motivate those like you and myself that see fashion as an artform and armor that incites us to persevere whatever circumstance comes our way. It is known that we can always expect an energy boost from fashion week as designers inspire us through the blood, sweat and tears they thread in every detail that is in every garment, outfit, collection and the overall atmosphere of their presentations. Fall-Winter 2020-21 was overall an homage to the things we treasure and feel nostalgic about, presenting collections inspired by the free 70s, the grungy and toughchic 90s, as well as giving us staple details to keep in mind like headscarves and bigger-than-life sleeves. Rest assured, here are the top 6 trending looks of Fall-Winter 2020-21 Ready-To-Wear.

HEADSCARVES First things first, I have to mention that headscarves dominated the runways. From Dior’s rock-and-roll bandana style to Jacquemus’s late 90s inspired triangle headscarves, the scarves ranged from bold-printed to solid pastel-toned that were usually paired with monochromatic outfits (like Marc Jacobs did). The headscarf is key to reviving the late 90s/early 2000s nostalgia seen on run-

Momentum proudly represents

some of the finest artists in the region, presenting their work in the greater context of exceptionally made work from around the country. The gallery is owned and operated by longtime Asheville art insider Jordan Ahlers and his wife, Shifra. Ahlers curates the space personally, allowing Momentum to offer considerable diversity but maintain a distinct point of view. The gallery has a strong focus on paintings and original prints while continuing to offer a surprising amount of alternative, sculptural choices to these traditional framed works including dynamic, low relief wall sculptures in glass, ceramic, wood, metal, and textile. Jordan comments, “I select art that moves me–unique, emotive, and provocative works that I can show in impactful arrangements. My primary concern is keeping the quality at a high level, so visitors and locals alike remain stimulated and engaged by our programming. There is a sense of curiosity and discovery with many of the works in the gallery.”

Step into an outdoor living space created by Wendy Fennell of Bohemian Bungalow Design. Wendy is an artist with a flair for bringing the outside inside to create livable outdoor areas. Showcased as a guest designer at the Interior Design Company (IDS) ‘s 2020 Showhouse, Wendy Fennell was the imagination behind the Veranda in the “Southern Living House”. The builder, Southern Cottage, provided a blank canvas for Wendy’s creative outdoor fusion to flow. Holiday Parties Event Planner Style

Q

Dear Claudia,

We normally go home to visit family for the holidays but won’t be traveling this year because of the pandemic. My mother is a pro at entertaining; however, I don’t seem to have inherited that gene. Also, my dining room’s color palette doesn’t work well with the normal red and green color scheme that I associate with the Christmas season. How can we make our holiday festivities feel extra special this year? Thanks, Fiona in Fairfield, CT

A

Dear Fiona,

You’re in luck! I’ve partnered with Lauren Pressley from Southern Savvy Events and Deedie Springer of Springvine Design (in the Charlotte, NC area) to show you how to transform your dining room for the holidays and set the theme for a joyous and festive occasion. Happily, we got to use my own dining room to demonstrate how it’s done! Volume 4, Issue 4 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

asked Lauren what she typically considers when planning a special event. “When hosting guests for any type of event, whether it be a simple dinner party or a holiday like Thanksgiving or Christmas, I try to keep the five senses in mind. Sight, hearing, smell,

taste, and touch. Hearing is easy - keep easy listening or seasonal music playing softly throughout your home. My trick to tying the other senses together is to use menu ingredients, such as herbs or fruit, as cocktail accents, place setting details, and sometimes even adding them to the centerpiece. Most importantly though, anticipating your guests' needs or wants before they arrive is always a priority - do they have food allergies, what is their favorite variety of wine, etc... thinking these things through before they arrive will always be appreciated.” When creating the tablescape, Lauren considered my dining room’s palette, which doesn’t necessarily support traditional Thanksgiving and winter holiday décor. Lauren utilized a cool color scheme of blues and gray to compliment the room while Deedie added pops of burgundy and magenta to the floral arrangements to reflect a holiday aesthetic. Simple but elegant black and gray plates from Heath Ceramics grounded the tablescape and kept things from feeling too

Ray exercises because he recognizes that his brain needs it…I am gushing, but seriously, I appreciate having fabulous people to look up to. So, what inspired Ray’s path in the first place? His mother, of course! Long ago, somewhere near Atlanta, Betty left her family home to live with distant relatives. Before this, the tiny tot had grown up in a home that lacked running water, and an outhouse was a normal part of her life. She first experienced grandeur at the Gower home (family friends of the distant relatives she was living with). Small eyes feasted on a parlor with a grand piano and a sweeping staircase. This is not a rag to riches story—not really. Rather, it is a study of benevolence and how kindness paid itself forward and manifested. You see, when Betty sees an Antebellum home, she internalizes more than the grand façade. That stateliness stirs deep emotion within her because she never fails to recall the kindness that the Gowers showed her during that young, vulnerable month away Volume 4, Issue 4 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

She never recalls the impressive Gower residence without expressing gratitude for the kindness and generosity she experienced. COMING HOME Designer Sue Shannon Shares the Trials, Tribulations, and Triumphs of Building Her “Final” Home

The idea of “home” can trigger many emotions, both good and bad. But if fortune smiles upon you, that structure can become sacred to you. Then, no matter what exotic destination beckons you to visit, the moment you return and open the door to your home and walkinto that space, it envelops you with comfort, peace and solitude. At that moment you realize the priceless value of “home.” Volume 4, Issue 4 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

At Nandina we have the privilege and honor of helping to create homes every day. Understanding just how personal and emotional that process can be for our clients usually becomes much more real when we find ourselves walking in their shoes! As designers we are exposed to many beautiful spaces that stretch the limits of creativity. We fantasize about building or renovating the perfect home for ourselves and our families. When the opportunity and the funds finally do come to fruition, the reality is that the actual process mirrors all of the angst, agonizing over selections, managing details, and organizing orders that we handle every day with our clients. Only this time we are our clients! And often, own expectations are more difficult to manage than those of our clients! When my Nandina business partner Sue Shannon and her husband Tim decided to build their new home, Sue often said, “This is it! My next home is an assisted living facility!” We were in the throes of building our business and Tim was working long hours as a busy surgeon in a large orthopedic medical practice. When I sat down with Sue to interview her about the interiors of her home for this feature, we were both flooded with memories of how eye-opening that experience was eight years ago.

Susan Victor (SV): As a busy person building a design business, how did you make the leap to take on building a new home? Sue Shannon (SS): Well, no one ever realizes just how much time and energy it takes to build a custom home. We had built two other homes before, and I think I just assumed it would be easy and a new challenge. I spent a lot of late nights poring over magazines and finish samples. I didn’t want my personal project to take away from my commitment to clients during the workday. One night around midnight, I remember being in tears as I counted and re-counted every cabinet door and drawer in the entire house so I could finalize the hardware order. Honestly, I felt like I didn’t have a day off for the 18 months it took to build our home.

100

Volume 4, Issue 4 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

SV: How did you begin the creative process? Did you have a plan and then find the property, or the other way around? What came first, the chicken or the egg? SS: The “property egg” definitely came first! It is shaped like a piece of pie with a tail, and there were utility lines running through it that couldn’t be crossed. Because it’s in the historic district and has large setbacks from the golf course, the actual buildable space on the lot was quite limited. I knew that building on this property was going to be a challenge, but the location checked all the boxes for Tim and me. It was in town, which made it closer to our store for me and closer to the hospital for Tim, but most of all it was one of only a handful of properties available on the historic city golf course – a major plus for Tim! Before we ever purchased our quirky plot of land, we hired Jeff Burden as our architect to make sure we could actually build a livable house on it. Jeff got right to work scribbling on a napkin to show us just how the house could nestle into the hillside and give us that downtown home on a golf course that we were looking for. Jeff has a focus on historical design. We felt strongly that we wanted the exterior of the home to reflect the historic neighborhood in which it sits. He had been recommended by friends, and after meeting him I felt he was the perfect collaborator for me to make our vision become a reality. We asked Jeff to design the exterior so that it would fit into our very old, historic neighborhood. We gave him free rein on the style and trusted his judgment. He jumped off existing larger homes in the neighborhood and used some elements from them to make the house feel and appear as if it had been here a long time. Jeff likens the house, built on this property, to Marilyn Monroe squeezed into her red dress, bursting at the seams!

SV: What were the most critical and difficult design decisions you had to make during the process? SS: The Lot shape was tricky. We ended up needing to purchase an additional slice of land to make the front fit comfortably on the street. The slope of the lot dictated that the house would be a two-story with a walkout lower level. We ended up with a larger space than originally intended because of this. On the interior, the ceiling millwork was selected as the house was being built. We decided on many of the designs once the house was framed and its character began to take shape. The choices that we made at this point are some of my favorites. The “doughnut hole” into the great room with the natural plank ceilings, the high/low ceiling in the study, and the Hitchcock ceiling in our bedroom are unique characteristics that I appreciate every day. Jeff suggested using old wood for our hardwood floors throughout. He linked us up with David Howard, a master furniture and flooring craftsman from Tennessee, who can make magic happen with wood that originally looks beyond repair. We trusted him as he traveled to Pennsylvania and took down most of an old barn to harvest the wood we used throughout the house. He did an incredible job with finishing and added some special design elements that instantly helped to give this new-build some age and character. Volume 4, Issue 4 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

adult children when they are in town, but also gained a space that’s great for storage. We especially love our covered upstairs porch and outdoor fireplace. They are equally as comfortable for two as they are when set up for a large gathering. SV: What was your design inspiration for the palette and style of the interiors? SS: I was much more concerned about the interiors, not surprisingly. I love a clean, uncluttered, transitional space, but felt strongly that the surfaces in this home should reflect the aesthetic and time period of the neighborhood. While at High Point Furniture Market, before we’d ever broken ground, I found a beautiful Oushak rug that I loved. It later became the starting point for our whole design. As time has passed, the interiors have changed and become more layered, just as our lives and interests have SV:

on their heads as they worked. I remember you and I wanted that perfect khaki color that wouldn’t throw pink and still allow the wood grain to show through. What a challenge! But thankfully, we finally nailed it. SV: Describe how you live in the house. After this much time, what decisions still ring true for your lifestyle? What would you change? SS: Our overall goal was to design a home for our new life as empty nesters and have comfortable space on one-level to live in and entertain friends and family. We wanted create a setting where we could age in place. My husband, Tim, loves to cook, but wanted a prep/cooking area where two cooks could work and guests could be a part of the process. He stayed out of the way on most selections, but had a strong voice when it came to flow and function throughout the main level. He was right, and I’m glad I listened to his wise counsel. We ended up with a large lower level, which houses our

COSTA RICA S

by Adam Jacot de Boinod

urely one compensation for having to stay put this year is thee opportunity to save this year’s holiday money and to put it towards,

and plan properly for, that dream holiday of a lifetime for 2021. Make up for it all by going somewhere breezy in its natural setting, life-affirming as a result of the wonderful range of animals to witness and with an upbeat and charming population to attend to your every need. Up on the Pacific side and close to Nicaragua is an area of Costa Rica called Guanacaste. It means ‘elephant-ear tree‘ and became incorporated into mainstream Costa Rica when the Inter-American Highway was built in 1954. And when Liberia Airport was built in the mid 1970s, bringing with it an 80% influx of Americans, this remote and once poor province, formerly owned by farming families from Cordoba in Spain, had turned into the next luxury hotspot as it moved away from fishing and agriculture to tourism and hospitality. You can fly direct from Miami, Houston, Atlanta, Los Angeles, New York, Dallas, Charlotte Douglas and Chicago .to Liberia Airport in Guanacaste or else take a charming short flight from San José, capital and largest city of Costa Rica. The luxury resort area of Guanacaste is Papagayo, said by some to be shaped

like a fire-breathing dragon and means parrot (rather than the often quoted father rooster). I loved exploring this peninsula which, along with two prestigious hotels, has beautiful villas and developments that have become vacation homes and residences to the wealthy looking for sustainable luxury, along with all that it entails: peaceful, unspoiled nature and wildlife, beauty and excitement. It is very much an American conceit with its buggies the most common form of transport for visitors. The 18-hole golf course, designed by Arnold Palmer and with Ernie Els as its ambassador, has games played out on ‘paspalum’ the sumptuous carpet-like grass. Near the main entrance there’s a marina to dock 355 slips where boats for cruising, yachting and sport fishing, particularly for both the black and blue marlin.

The Canopy Suites offer real privacy and have rooms with triangular interior roofs and rounded sofas to offset the square dimensions while the veranda railings echo the shape of the branches. The outside of the standard Guest Rooms have three-pronged buttresses that also echo the branches of the surrounding trees. The colours are consistent throughout and blend organically with their natural surroundings. The earth-toned stucco exteriors were computer-generated from actual dirt samples to replicate the deep browns, oranges and reds of the soil and the roots of the land. The roofs are designed to resemble the interior architecture of the conch shell and blend into the background like the backs of the armadillos, turtles and butterflies that inspired them. Breakfast boasted inventive mixes of juices and smoothies, but the real treat was the avocado flatbread with egg white scrambled bites, chipotle aioli and mixed salad leaving an aftertaste with a lovely contest between the differing herbs and spices. A real explosion of flavours. The chia pudding with caramelized pineapple and the acai and tapioca combinations were also rather memorable though less in conflict with each other. I experienced the unobtrusive yet attentive service of a characterful staff who enjoyed, and appeared proud of, their jobs.

As Isadore Sharp, the Canadian founder of the Four Seasons Hotel Group, rightly says: “some of life’s fondest memories are made around the dinner table” and for the most typical guests who get to stay a week at the resort it’s wonderful that there’s a healthy choice of restaurants. The three main ones are all sideby-side. Añejo, the Asian fusion with Costa Rican food was casual and informal both inside and out, with tapas including salmon tostadas and charred tuna wonton tacos, ‘lomo salteado empanadas’ and ‘hamachi tiraditos’. I enjoyed the live music of an upbeat local trio at the Bahia Grill that overlooks the Playa Blanca and, along with succulent steaks and fish offers interestingly charred eggplant dip, wood-fired roasted cabbage, roasted cauliflower, grilled avocado and asparagus. And for my last night, at Pesce an Italian and Costa Rican fusion offering pastas and risottos, I chose the delicious local produce ‘lattuga del giardino’ salad to go with my lemon-crusted red snapper. I couldn’t get enough of this delightful country. I have to go back. Whenever but soon.

And, though the list of hotel amenities is long and enviable, it’s really the hotel itself that’s the draw. Magnificent architecture, grand fireplaces, and museum-quality furniture make a stay at The Willcox Hotel worth repeating. Your pet gets a cozy bed here, as well as a home-baked treat. There’s a turndown service for you and one for your furry friend. Access to dry cleaning and laundry services makes your stay that much more comfortable. Guests will feel the difference from the moment they step into the grand lobby, which the locals have lovingly nicknamed The Living Room of Aiken.

Exploring the Charm and Gentility of Aiken, SC Aiken is known for the role it plays in national and local equestrian events, including The Carolina Cup, the Aiken Spring and Fall Steeplechase events, and Pacers and Polo -- the third event of the Aiken Triple Crown. Thousands of guests flock to this area every year to join the excitement and thrill of the race. Aiken is Thoroughbred County and home to the Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame. Then there’s Oktoberfest and the Festival of 1,000 Lights to round out the year. There’s always something fun to do and somewhere exciting to go in Aiken.
