A message from our CEO No matter how much of the world you’ve seen, there’s always more to discover – even in those places you think you know inside out. 125 YEARS OF CULINARY ART This year, as we celebrate our 125th anniversary, we take time to reflect on our journey which began in a small Berlin Delicatessen and wine store. Throughout our long, rich history, we have stayed true to our European roots and nowhere is our heritage more strikingly apparent than in our restaurants and cuisine. Our founder, Berthold Kempinski, took pleasure in delighting his loyal clientele with new and inventive approaches to food and drink. Today, our talented chefs throughout the world continue this tradition, serving innovative dishes that skilfully combine European influences with local flavours and ingredients.

As well as imaginative produce and ingredients, M. Kempinski & Co. served its loyal clientele with the finest wines. Today, Hans-Martin Konrad, sommelier at two Michelin star restaurant, Lorenz Adlon Esszimmer at Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin, takes inspiration from Berthold’s legacy when selecting wines. “I always try to think about what Berthold would have chosen,” he says. “I truly believe he would have approved of these excellent local labels which represent the current gold standard of German wine".

Down in the Engelberg valley, in central Switzerland, we discover green pastures, gentle landscapes and the hustle and bustle of village life with its culture and handicrafts. While in the mountains, nature, spectacular wilderness and tranquillity dominate. Engelberg brings these two worlds together in a wonderful setting that can be explored in many different ways, making it a particularly attractive holiday destination – in summer or winter.

Wild or tamed – Engelberg combines the best of both worlds BY ANDREA HURSCHLER*
Engelberg is a high valley in the midst of Switzerland’s most beautiful mountains. This panorama can be overwhelming at first, but seemingly isolated from the rest of the world, it’s surprising how we quickly relax and begin to explore. M A J E S T I C M O U N TA I N S A N D I M P R E S S I V E TRADITIONS
Standing in the hollow of the valley since 1120, the Benedictine monastery is a very special, tranquil place, and has helped to put Engelberg on the map. According to legend, the monastery was built here thanks to an ox! Zurich nobleman, Konrad von Sellenbüren, believed the creature would show him the optimum spot and it eventually chose Engelberg. Behind the thick walls, the impressive interior reveals a place for us to reflect. However, although it is the village’s defining feature, our gaze always turns to the mountains. Titlis, Hahnen and Gross Spannort are the three best-known and most distinctive peaks. Hahnen was formerly known as ‘Engelberg’ because legend claims angels flew around it. Hahnen and Spannort can be explored only on foot and with appropriate climbing gear. Rarely does a person feel as small and yet as grand as they do up here. Titlis has been accessible by cable car since 1967 and so is easier to get to. The ‘Rotair’ – the world’s first revolving cable car – takes us on the final section. Arriving at the top, at 3,020 metres above sea level, we alight in a different world: one of snow and glacier, 365 days a year. A ride on the Ice Flyer chairlift over impressive crevasses, a journey across the windy ‘Cliff Walk’ suspension bridge, and a tour of the glacier grotto make this visit unforgettable. Other cable cars take you quickly and easily from the bottom of the valley to the mountains where you can enjoy many activities such as hiking, biking, climbing, and of course winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding. On the Titlis side is the extraordinarily beautiful Trübsee mountain lake. It’s a good spot to pause and enjoy the view of the mountains reflected in the lake or take out a rowing boat. The Fürenalp is just as impressive. You might not relish the idea of a ride on the small train from the end of the valley up to 1,850 metres above sea level, but it’s worth it. The mountains seem close enough to touch! There are countless small cable cars known as ‘Buiräbähnli’ in the Engelberg Valley which were once used by mountain farmers. They are now part of the unique Buiraebähnlisafari, a hiking tour
incorporating several rides on different, sometimes spectacular Buiräbähnli. Fun fact: the Brändlen Cable Car is also used to transport the stocky Dexter cattle! On the Alpkäsetrail, a similar hiking tour, we visit seven Alpine cheesemakers. We enjoy the view, while sampling the finest Alpine cheese. It’s difficult to choose a favourite, but we can reveal that Rosmarie Hurschler from Hüttismatt and Sälmi Töngi from Gerschnialp have won various prizes. Experiencing first-hand the exhausting life on summer farms, we get fascinating insights into cheese production. It quickly becomes clear why Alpine cheese tastes so good. The herbs growing on the unfertilised, species-rich pastures are particularly aromatic which is reflected in the milk, and therefore in the cheese itself. Some of these cheesemakers are located on the sunny Brunni side of Engelberg. People from the misty lowlands are especially drawn to this area, made popular because of its high levels of sunshine and varied, family-friendly activities. For a spot of natural wellbeing, we take a tour around the Härzlisee, next to the Brunnihütte, and walk barefoot along a ‘tickle path’ encircling the small lake. One of the most beautiful high-altitude hiking trails starts here at 1,860 metres above sea level. The Walenpfad leads into the Bannalp area and offers unobstructed views of the Mittelland. The valley is also full of traditions and experiences waiting to be discovered. The Tal Museum, an old Engelberg farmhouse, is a house of stories. It’s striking before you even step inside because of the coats of arms emblazoned on its façade. Alongside that of the municipality, 17 other coats of arms represent distinguished Engelberg families. Inside the museum, the historic living quarters reflect everyday life in the 18th century and we learn fascinating things about the distinctive local dialect, and the history of the valley. The traditional crafts, still practised in the valley, are one of its many delights. In Wolfenschiessen, Beat Mathis artistically embroiders cowbell straps. In the Blatter Holzkunst souvenir shop, next door to Kempinksi Palace Engelberg, Werni Blatter creates impressive wooden figures. The valley also has a variety of restaurants and it’s worth leaving the village centre to discover local eateries serving traditional Swiss cuisine. Look out for Ende der Welt, Schwand, and Gasthaus Gerschnialp. It’s this combination of modern and traditional; mountain and valley; being active and relaxing, that makes Engelberg truly unique!

Engelberg is a place where the beauty of nature is closely connected with traditions. On various mountainsides, farmers make cheese from fresh Alpine milk. When the cows return from the mountain to the valley in autumn, they wear bells with wonderful, elaborately hand-decorated straps. Only the monastery is older than these Alpine traditions: it has been the centre of the village since 1120 and its architecture still amazes visitors.

Amidst the magic of the mountains Embraced by the majestic Swiss mountains that attract visitors to Engelberg-Titlis, Kempinski Palace Engelberg is the first international five-star hotel in Central Switzerland’s largest allseason holiday destination. With a history rooted in the Belle Epoque, this beautiful property has a genuine sense of place at the centre of the village. The two are intertwined and have grown together to create a truly magical location. Successful Engelberg hotelier, Eduard Cattani, commissioned his brother Arnold, a renowned architect, to design the property. The first building in the country with central heating, it opened its doors in 1904 as Grandhotel Winterhaus, and became known far beyond Switzerland’s borders. Recent renovations have continued its story with the addition of a second building which interconnects seamlessly with the original hotel. Now heritage-listed, this architectural masterpiece houses one of Switzerland’s best preserved Belle Epoque ballrooms – a much treasured feature. Historical elements have been sensitively preserved throughout the hotel. From vibrant Havana to the mellow coral islands, a trip to uncover Cuba's soul. BY ANTOINE GAUVIN
The sun is sinking, setting ablaze the cheerful façades of Old Havana. The sign of Floridita lights up to greet passers-by. This legendary bar where Hemingway had his own table still serves the best daiquiris in Cuba. Candy-coloured 1950s Dodge sedans with gleaming chrome trims are parked in front. Opposite, the restored façade of Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski is brightly lit. This is where we start our road trip across the fascinating land of mambo and salsa. The island, with its mix of cultures and its gentle lifestyle, is 1,200 km long. We're heading for Cayo Guillermo, a small coral island north of the mainland where there's a new Kempinski hotel, a relaxed resort amid white sand beaches, turquoise sea and pink flamingoes. Our first stop, on the way to the Bay of Pigs, is Ciénaga de Zapata, the island's largest nature park. This gigantic maze of mangroves between land and sea is a paradise for tropical birds. The landscape has probably not changed since Christopher Columbus landed not far away in 1494. There's mystery beauty, and adventure too: the park is home to Cuba's impressive nine feet long crocodiles, which stare at you with yellow eyes. The Bay of Pigs is not just a landmark of Cuban history, it's also sheer heaven for snorkelling and diving. The seabed here is magnificent, with thousands of fish darting around the corals in an endless ballet of phosphorescent colours. We pick one of the many spots along the bay to pause our journey long enough to explore beneath the waves of the Caribbean. Deep blue sky, music, cocktails – bliss! This is Cuba, gentle and full of joy, calm yet buzzing. CIENFUEGOS
Further along we find Cienfuegos, the 'pearl of the south', tucked away in a tranquil bay, replete with opulent mansions that tell the rich tale of Cuba's sugar trade. One of the most iconic is the astonishing Palacio de Valle, a 19th-century architectural folly mixing Gothic, Venetian and Moorish styles. If you take the small hidden staircase behind the Neo-Moorish arcade, a surprise awaits: a splendid terrace café serving welcome refreshments. Cienfuegos's historic centre, with its Neo-Classical colonnades, has UNESCO
World Heritage status. Next morning, before leaving, we visit the botanical garden, one of the largest in Latin America. It is home to nearly 200 species of palm and cactus, and banyan trees with their aerial roots encroaching on the surrounding space. TRINIDAD
Our second overnight stop is Trinidad, our favourite Cuban town and the third UNESCO World Heritage site in Cuba after Havana and Cienfuegos. Time travelling again! Cuba's decades of isolation have enabled it to preserve its old-time style. The streets are still paved with river cobbles and the large central porches of the townhouses still lead straight into living rooms. Here, there's no strict boundary between indoors and out; people exchange greetings between home and street and the two tall windows typical of Trinidad's houses are wide open day and night. When evening falls, lively conversation takes place by the light through the windows and the old street lamps. In this soft and gentle atmosphere, we head for a 16th-century palace that's now a restaurant. The owner has kept all the decor intact, with family portraits and even the precious china and silver cutlery. There's a trio playing 'Son Cubano', music with an African tempo and Spanish influences. A rare and delicious moment. In the early morning, as a cart rattles by, it's time for us to leave and head north. Inland, the countryside is fertile, with the best land still producing the sugar cane that in recent centuries forged the country's history and identity. Crossing the island to the other side we discover the Jardines del Rey islands, a sanctuary for pink flamingos and royal palms. These coral islands are said to have been the lair of pirates. Thoughts of pirates vanish at the sight of endless white sand beaches, turquoise sea and white egrets perched on old seableached tree trunks. Palm groves add a touch of soft green to the monochrome of sea and sky. Welcome to Cayo Guillermo, the small unspoilt island where at last we find our final stop, Cayo Guillermo Resort Kempinski. Named after Hemmingway's boat, Playa Pilar is one of Cuba's finest beaches and is right beside the hotel. After this colourful 700 km tour it's time to enjoy the clear, warm water, the music and the authentic kindness of the Cubans. Grilled lobster, glassbottomed boats and idle hours lie ahead.

No one comes to Havana without taking a ride in a Cadillac convertible (top left). Cuba's 1950s American cars have been granted ‘national monument’ status. Incredibly well maintained, they are now one of Cuba's landmarks. The Neo-Classical Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes dating from 1913 (above) and the 1915 Neo-Baroque Gran Teatro de La Habana (top centre) are two of Havana's most emblematic buildings. An astonishing mix of Moorish, Spanish, Venetian and Gothic elements, it’s been a private home, a casino and a restaurant. All the building materials – marble, alabaster, ceramics, ironwork and forgings – were shipped from Europe. The Bay of Pigs (right), a famous site in the Cuban revolution, is now a peaceful place for swimming, fishing and enjoying life. Snorkelling places like this one, Caleta Buena, with its fine natural swimming pool, are very popular.

In Trinidad, time has stopped. This delightful town halfway along the south coast has retained all its 18th-century elegance. In the town's central square, Plaza Mayor (top left), the 19th-century street lighting still works. Bands play everywhere in the evening, and sitting on the steps of the main square is a good place to enjoy a cocktail. The Santisima Trinidad parish church (bottom right) houses an 18th-century wooden statue made in Barcelona. It was originally intended for a church in Mexico, but the ship that carried it was driven onto the shore here by a gale. Local people saw this as a sign from heaven and the statue is greatly revered.

Cayo Guillermo is one of a string of unspoilt islands off the north coast of Cuba. It can be reached by a 27 km causeway built in 1988. Wooden huts under the palm trees serve delicious grilled lobster. The seabed of the coral reef offers a magnificent sight for snorkellers or from a glassbottomed boat. Pink flamingoes, their feathers tinted by the quantities of shrimp they eat, are among the many species of bird that inhabit the untamed mangrove swamp.

PERFUME INSPIRED BY SILK Have you ever wondered how a fragrance is created and what defines its individuality? Who are the people behind the perfumes we wear and what special qualities do they need? We spoke to Alienor Massenet and Emilie Coppermann, two ‘noses’. Together they have created Storie di Seta - a line of fragrances for Ferragamo, inspired by the exquisite, beautifully designed silk collections of this iconic fashion house.

A Master Perfumer since 2016, she still feels proud and emotional when a brand announces that a perfume she has created will receive their label. Mother of four, Emilie lives life to the full, balancing a busy work and home life, and she still finds time to play the piano!

Meet the Ferragamo noses BY ELAINE SWIFT
What was the starting point for the Storie di Seta fragrance collection and which natural ingredients did you choose?
How you get your inspiration? Do you have a particular method?
Alienor Massenet: Over the years, Ferragamo has created a stunning range of silk patterns which are still very popular today. Silk has a specific touch and sound. Like perfume, it’s very sensorial. We took our inspiration from the brightness of the colours, the magic of the motifs, and from a vision of the ancient Silk Road.
AM: My inspiration comes from many things: reading books, watching a show, visiting an exhibition, seeing a TV report, talking with different artists, walking around the streets where I live, and yoga too. I often think of my scents in terms of shapes, colours and materials - like architecture or a painting. When I’m creating, I like having my feet level with my hips. So, either I sit on the floor in lotus position, or I put my legs up on a chair. I find it relaxing. I’d love to have a Japanese-style office with a floor-level table!
We then created a ‘Silk Thread’ - an exclusive accord that unites all four fragrances in the collection and creates a powerful multisensory impact. An accord is made of different notes, blended together so they lose their individual identity and create a new, unified scent. Among the elements that compose the Storie di Seta fragrances are notes of iris with a hint of lily of the valley, along with Lilybelle® a new eco-sustainable molecule from perfume manufacturer, Symrise - created from orange peel. Next, we added the softness of leather and a touch of ethically extracted Timut Pepper. Emilie Coppermann: We had carte blanche on the choice of ingredients. Both Ferragamo and Symrise are committed to sustainability, as well as respecting natural resources, and supporting the communities that produce the ingredients, so this was front of mind. For example, the Filo di Seta accord uses ingredients that are 62% renewable and 99% biodegradable. With Giungle di Seta, we focused on mandarin, peony and an original crisp note of green pea. Savane di Seta features bitter orange, an essential oil of carrot seeds, and ginger - the result of a cooperation with farmers in Madagascar.
EC: I get inspiration from everyone and everything around me. When I’m creating, I’m open to all ideas, and to criticism as well - it’s always interesting whether I choose to listen or not. I have infinite sources of inspiration - travel, literature, art and also people! I like to get people around me to smell my creations and exchange ideas with them. I really like successes that are the result of teamwork. I’m especially happy when I succeed in my constant quest to create something that has never been done before - something disruptive and unexpected, yet harmonious of course. Please can you explain the term ‘olfactory pyramid’ and give us an example? AM & EC: The olfactory pyramid is a perfume’s structure which is composed of the top, middle and bottom notes. The three levels of the olfactory pyramid correspond to a perfume’s different scents, from the most evanescent to the most persistent. The ingredients don’t all have the same importance or the same longevity. This composition, which varies from one perfume to another, explains why the scent evolves throughout the day.

We’d love to hear a little about you both…
Does your personality influence the creation of a perfume?
AM: People often describe me as chic and eccentric! I grew up in a family rooted in tradition with a taste for luxury, and respect for age-old rituals. While I’m proud of my background, I’m a liberated and iconoclastic perfumer. I have no trouble expressing my creativity and I give free rein to my instincts and to the emotions I detect in other people. I love contrasting natural raw materials with molecules and captives, and teaming them with the latest discoveries in neuroscience.
AM: Of course! Every perfumer has a style and expresses their creativity in different ways. My perfumes are very direct with a readable signature, but they are also facetted with colourful accents to make them come alive. I’d say my style is still evolving each day. For Storie di Seta, we wanted to create a signature that could both reflect our personalities, and at the same time be authentic and true to Ferragamo. The collection reflects the spirit of the House, by using the very best quality, most innovative ingredients to create fragrances that are combinable.
EC: “I’ll be where I’m least expected.” This could easily be my mantra given that my creations cultivate a signature that is both delicate and full of surprises – a harmony of opposites and counterintuitive choices of ingredients. I grew up in Paris, raised by hippie parents, and my grandmother. I have a boundless love for my native city and a passion for travelling. I became Master Perfumer at Symrise in 2016 and I’m part of a team that’s one big happy family. On top of this I’m a mother to four children and somehow find time to play the piano. I’m living life at full throttle, and I couldn’t be happier!
EC: I would define my style as unconventional and playful: I like to create surprising concepts and unexpected associations. However, creating for a fashion house such as Ferragamo means acknowledging and working with its heritage. We are like actors who have to get to the essence of their character. For example, all Ferragamo perfumes have a certain roundness, a caressing smell, and convey a certain joy. We had to bring that across into this collection too. I like how the contrast and duality create a unique story and give the perfume another dimension, a deeper identity.
