ANDREW HILL TURNED HIS PASSION FOR FISHING AND WATERCRAFT INTO HIS BUSINESS, AND ALONG THE WAY HELPED BRING THE SEA-DOO FISH PRO TO LIFE. Andrew Hill embodies everything about the Sea-Doo FISH PRO. Instrumental in the development of the model range, Andrew lives and breathes PWC fishing adventures. Having tinkered with do-ityourself solutions to equip his old PWC for fishing, Andrew worked with the Sea-Doo team to help create the FISH PRO. Now fishermen (and women!) everywhere can take an adrenaline ride to their favourite fishing spot and cast a line easier than ever before.

“With the FISH PRO, Sea-Doo have made it easy for anyone to buy this craft and do what I do out-of-the-box. Before then, people would watch my videos and DIY fishing rigs on their watercraft. Unlike a boat, it’s easier to get on the water quickly and head to your favourite fishing spot, and catching fish is a great reason to get out on your craft more often”, said Andrew. He added, “Planning adventures is the coolest part. There are no limitations. You can go to remote places, you can launch off sandy beaches – it just opens up new worlds. And when you add a friend it goes to a whole new level.” And it’s not just the fishing. With the FISH PRO, half the fun is getting out to your fishing spot on the ski. “Going out at first light and seeing the sun rise is so special. Riding along at speed, accompanied by dolphins and orcas, is just magic,” Andrew said. One of the most popular events Andrew runs is the annual Monster Snapper Hunt which attracts over 80 anglers aged from 16 to 70 years. Helping others master fishing on PWC is one of Andrew’s great passions. “For me, I get the most enjoyment watching other people catch their first fish, or their first fish on the FISH PRO,” said Andrew, who not long ago landed his largest ever Snapper – a specimen weighing in at 30+ pounds, a milestone that had eluded him for many years.

His dream fishing trip? “We do an annual trip to Great Barrier Island off Auckland. It’s the purest island in the region, and is home to many big fish species. We put the skis on a barge to get to the island, for five days of fishing and camping – it’s an epic adventure!” So what’s on Andrew’s bucket list? “Definitely New Zealand’s South Island Sounds. This is pristine wilderness with spectacular scenery that would make for a memorable fishing adventure.” For Andrew, the FISH PRO lifestyle runs in the family. His kids regularly join him on the water for fishing and fun. And he even named his new puppy Rotax after the Sea-Doo powertrain.

“Growing up, I’m sure at some point I made a mental note to go try tanker surfing.” N I C K TAY LO R

HARNESSING THE POWER OF TANKERS AND DODGING SHARKS, NICK TAYLOR AND CO. CATCH A WAVE IN AN UNFAMILIAR LOCALE. When it comes to riding a wave anywhere on Planet Earth, being in the right place at the right time can take years of reading forecasts, understanding seasonal trends and generally, a whole lot of luck. When it comes to the niche sport of tanker surfing, things get just a little more complicated. But with a little bit of ingenuity, it can deliver the ride of a lifetime—and that’s what professional surfer Nick Taylor brings to the table. A little known corner of the wave-riding world, tanker surfing, or riding the waves generated by the large tankers that deliver goods to the port in Galveston, Texas, has been going on since the early 1970s. Pioneered by a few hearty locals, the sport has slowly picked up in popularity in the past decade. One way to ride these waves? The up-and-coming sport of hydrofoiling. Pioneered in Hawaii by big-wave surfers, the sport has gained immense popularity over the past decade. By utilizing technology similar to how an airplane wing flies, the sport involves riding a wakeboard

or surfboard with a wing mounted to the bottom, delivering a smooth ride for the rider, who is elevated off the water’s surface. That’s where Nick Taylor comes in. A Florida-born waterman who originally made a name for himself as a professional wakeskater, Nick hopped on the bandwagon when he heard of the new sport. Of the many advantages of a hydrofoil, one of its most common uses is to ride waves that are not favourable for traditional surfing—and that’s where the collision of the world of tanker surfing and hydrofoiling occurs—right underneath Nick Taylor’s feet. “Growing up, I’m sure at some point I made a mental note to go try tanker surfing,” Nick said. “But as a surf-starved grom, it would’ve been difficult to peel my focus away from the world-famous traditional surf spots like Pipeline, Uluwatu and Kirra.” But when this new sport came into the fold, his priorities were rearranged. “It had never looked so appealing as it now did, viewed through the expanded filter of hydrofoil possibilities. While too mellow on the face for aggressive maneuvers on a shortboard, the tanker wakes are long, perfectly shaped power sources for riding a foil,” Nick Taylor said. So Nick gathered a crew, with wakesport legends Parks Bonifay and Brian Grubb, along with another wake-world mainstay Guenther Oka, and headed to the small town of Galveston, Texas, on the Gulf Coast. While plenty have tackled the tanker-surfing scene, this crew was unique, in that they tackled the waves on hydrofoils. And because the tanker swells don’t generate enough power for the waves to be paddled into, the crew used their Sea-Doo Wake Pro to tow each other. This way, they could get up to speed, at which point they could let

go of the tow rope and ride for miles on end—literally. “There were times when my legs gave up a couple of miles before the wave was done trimming across the Galveston sandbars,” Nick said. With the help of local surfer and tanker wave pioneer Capt. Joe, a local tanker captain who can read a tanker swell forecast with the best of them, the crew had the session of a lifetime—and managed to stay safe while doing so. “We’re operating in close proximity to some of the largest machines humanity has ever built while moving at crazy speeds, and keeping in mind the massive sharks that follow closely behind every tanker/cargo ship that comes in from the open ocean,” Nick remarked. Even with some dangers, it’s hard to not enjoy yourself when there are no crowds, plenty of waves, and a new experience that’s hardly comparable to anything else in the world of tow-surfing. “There’s great joy to be found in trying something new and stepping outside of your normal bounds—even if you have to go to Galveston, Texas to do it.” These are professionals with the knowledge, training and experience to be able to participate in this activity safely. IF KYLIE ELLMERS ISN’T PILOTING HER CRAFT TO ANOTHER TITLE WIN, YOU’LL LIKELY FIND HER HARD AT WORK PREPARING RACING CRAFT FOR HERSELF AND OTHERS. Kylie Ellmers grew up in a small town in New Zealand where the local sports were either surfing or speedway. She spent many hours with her family at the race track, then took her love of highperformance racing to the water and became a champion Sea-Doo racer.

Over a 25-year racing career, Kylie has won every title worth having, in every craft class, including multiple world titles. She even mixes it with the men, winning numerous international Open titles and forging a path for other women in the sport. Competing at the top level takes a lot of discipline and practice, and a keen awareness of weather and wave conditions. “I love competing, the challenge of pushing myself against the best in the world, and conquering the conditions on the day,” says Kylie. And it’s not just going fast on the water where Kylie has an impact on the sport. Off the water, Kylie has two automotive industry qualifications and brings those skills to a performance workshop where she spends her time designing and making hulls, and tuning performance watercraft for other racers and owners. On race day, while other racers are quietly preparing to compete, Kylie is often working hard behind the scenes preparing the watercraft of other competitors and their teams, before joining them on the starting grid. Says

Kylie, “I’ve often been in a situation where I’ve helped prepare other watercraft that are lining up to race against me. And even though I always want to win, it’s a special feeling if one of my customers or another team I helped prepare gets a win on the day. One of my proudest moments was seeing watercraft I worked on fill all top five places in a race.” What’s on the horizon for Kylie? “After enduring months of on-again, off-again lockdowns and travel restrictions in 2021, I’m looking forward to joining the last round of the Aquabike World Championships in UAE in December, then kicking off 2022 with my favourite event, the Jet Ski World Cup in Thailand in January,” said Kylie. Whatever the future holds, it’s certain Kylie will be getting there at top speed.

PFD Size Chart How to Measure Lots of options, tons of safety. Whether you’re getting wet and wild or heading out on a long, easy cruise, we’ve got the right PFD for you.

For best results, have someone else take measurements. Measure body in swimsuit or undergarments. Tape must be snug but not tight. If measurements fall between two sizes, order the larger size. Chest Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest. Waist Measure around your waist at the narrowest place. Hips Stand with legs together, measure around the fullest part of your hips, ensuring the tape is level.

Safety Checklist PROTECTIVE CLOTHING WEAR PROTECTIVE CLOTHING as well as a PERSONAL FLOTATION DEVICE (PFD). All riders must wear a certified PFD that is suitable for Personal Watercraft (PWC) / Boat use. Wet suit bottoms are often forgotten, and while they are not legally compulsory, they are a necessary addition.

ENGINE / THROTTLE MANAGEMENT ATTACH ENGINE SHUT-OFF CORD (LANYARD) to PFD and keep it free from handlebars so that engine shuts off should you; the operator, fall off. REMEMBER: YOU MUST APPLY THROTTLE TO TURN. After riding, remove the cord from PWC or Boat to avoid unauthorised use by children or others. When riding; DO NOT APPLY THROTTLE IF ANYONE IS AT THE REAR OF PWC – turn engine off or keep engine at idle. KEEP AWAY FROM INTAKE GRATE while engine is on.

SCAN CONSTANTLY & MAINTAIN A SAFE DISTANCE SCAN CONSTANTLY for people, objects, and other watercraft. Be alert for conditions that limit your visibility or block your vision of others. Do not go near others to try spray or splash them with water. Do not ride erratically. Be prepared to stop or alter course in emergencies (Keep right when approaching other vessels).

KNOW YOUR BOATING LAWS KNOW BOATING LAWS. If applicable by state; always ensure your PWC license is on you and follow navigation rules and provincial/state and local laws that apply to PWC / Boat. Know the waters you will operate in and observe all navigational marks and signs. Ignorance is not an excuse.

ALCOHOL / DRUGS DO NOT USE ALCOHOL OR DRUGS before and during operation (both driver / passenger)

When riding for the first time, it's important you don't go out alone, get yourself familiar with your machine and surroundings by practicing in a controlled, safe environment, close enough so others can see you.
