The enigmatic and magical moments when enjoying a superlative performance that is rising far above the norm is comparable to watching Nikola Jokic perform at Denver’s Ball Arena.. For basketball aficionados his re markable court performances have placed him securely in the crème de la creme of the uncompromising and supremely com petitive world of NBA Basketball. A sea son-ticket holding fan was overheard say ing, “Watching Nikola Jokic perform at Ball Arena is like sipping fine champagne at the Ritz London. His feet movements are like those of a master Serbian dancer, and we’re so blessed to have such a superb and inspired athlete representing Denver.”

The Historic 2014 NBA Draft

A huge gold star to the Denver Nuggets scouting team who finally decided to give Nikola Jokic a look or he might have been entirely bypassed as a future Nuggets pros pect. Astonishingly, 30 NBA teams over looked Nikola in the first round of the June 2014 draft that took place in Brooklyn’s Bar clays Center, including the Denver Nug gets who had the 11th overall pick. Nikola’s older brother Nemanja, 6’6”, a former col legiate basketball player, and a University of Detroit Mercy alum, was watching the draft on television in New York City, anxious ly wondering when Nikola’s name would be selected and questioning, “Isn’t there a team out there that can simply acknowl edge someone with a gift for the game?”

Measuring a lofty 7’ in the morning and 6’11” at night upon retiring, Nikola enjoys incredi ble court vision. Together these gifts put him on the NBA block, but neither could guaran tee him the notice of an NBA scout nor the opportunity to fulfill his dreams. The NBA is the absolute elite for every basketball pros pect, but for most players it is only an ephem eral dream of the briefest of memories.

Following a long night for Nemanja, the second day of the NBA draft rolled around, and Nemanja wondered again whether and when Nikola’s name would be acknowl edged. Nikola Jokic was finally selected by the Nuggets near the end of the draft as the 41st overall pick. The announcement came while ESPN was running a Taco Bell com mercial, his name popping up on the chy ron crawling at the bottom of the screen during the commercial. Nemanja, with unending brothers love, excitedly called Nikola who was sleeping soundly in Som bor, Serbia, the Jokic’s hometown. “You got drafted in the NBA! How do you sleep right now?” Nineteen years old at the time and with a profound sense of humor Nikola first thought his brother was joking and went back to sleep but said in a much-publicized Denver Post quote, “Hopefully, I’m gonna have some percentage from the Taco Bell.”

Having been bypassed 40 times by NBA teams including the Nuggets, the 41st selection in the 2014 NBA draft will forever be engraved in NBA history.

Sombor, Serbia, Family Basketball Haven

Nikola was born February 19, 1995, in Sombor, Serbia, a town in the northwest corner of the country that dates back to 1340. More than 100 miles from the hustle and bustle of Belgrade, Sombor is quiet and peaceful, a tree-lined town with fascinating Architecture and historical monuments, a neo-classical townhall, and a monastery built by the Franciscan Friars. Encir cled by plentiful farms who source the restau rants farm to table, the town exudes a roman tic panache enhanced by the ubiquitous and endearing Fiacres—small, horse-drawn, fourwheeled hackney carriages first introduced in Paris in the 1640’s—that weave through Sombor’s attractive leafy streets. Adding to the town’s ambiance are the gaggles of young boys who love to play basketball in the shade of the 18,000 trees that dapple the landscape.

Nikola spent his youth in a small two-bedroom apartment shared with both parents, a grand mother, and his two older brothers. Nikola be gan refining his playmaking skills and tech niques playing hoops with his brothers who were talented and impactful influences, and a father who was likewise an avid sports and bas ketball fan. Nemanja, 6’6”, 11 years older than Nikola, played basketball for Detroit Mercy and was undrafted in the 2010 NBA Draft. Strahin ja, the oldest, 6’8”, played European basketball. By age 16 Nikola’s basketball abilities had im proved enormously and he was invited to play with the Mega Leks, a Serbian Team in the Adriatic League. Nikola was overweight - fat,

as he has affirmed - with a love for ice cream, soft drinks, horses and harness racing. Yet, in 2015 Jokic received the Adriatic League Top Prospect Award and Most Valua ble Player, (MVP), thanks to eminent Ser bian-style coaching, and a brothers love.

Nickola’s LoDo Neighborhood

After the fateful 2014 NBA draft, Nikola played another year in a European league, and ultimately signed a Nuggets contract for the 2015 season arriving in Denver and settling in LoDo the city’s oldest neigh borhood. He shared a three-bedroom apartment overlooking Coors’s Field with his brothers and his girlfriend, Natalija, a former volleyball player. At the end of his first year with the Nuggets, after elevating his dining habits and reducing his soft drink consumption—achieving a much slimmer playing weight of 284 pounds—Nikola was honored as a member of the NBA All Rookie Team, a notable achievement in the world of professional basketball, and the lowest draft selection in NBA history to be a member of the Rookie Team. Nikola’s down-to-earth, nonchalant personality, lack of interest in personal statistics and accolades, unusual ly humble attitude, and dedication to being the first to arrive and last to leave at workouts, was a dream for Coach Malone, and perhaps a rewarding surprise as well. It is a rare NBA player who is as seldom demanding or dif ficult as Nikola, though he has been known to reciprocate if fouled, even unintentionally.

Accolades Abundantly Awarded

The NBA quickly grasped Nikola’s basketball gifts, his unusual court vision, playmaking skills, and brilliant technique, ranking him one of the greatest passing big men in NBA history. A four-time NBA All-Star, he was honored with a Most Valuable Player Award, for the 2020-21 season, and awarded a rare

second consecutive Most Valuable Player Award for the 2021-2022 season. He was also named to the All-NBA First Team and was the first Nuggets player to earn this honor four straight seasons. Though he shared the ball in the 2021-2022 season with 7.9 assists, he still averaged a whopping 27.1 points on 58.2 percentage shooting with 12.9 rebounds.

The Denver Nugget front office and Coach Malone traveled to Sombor to surprise Jok ic with his second MVP Award to find him approaching his horse stable in a Fiacre. It was likely the only MVP award, past or fu ture, ever to be presented in a horse stable.

The NBA aside, for Jokic a high priority was playing for the Serbia National Team in the Olympics, earning a silver medal for his country while averaging 25 points a game. Even this pales in comparison to his most significant accolade—his October 2020 mar riage to Natalija Macesic, a private ceremo ny in his hometown with family and friends. Natalija, a working Psychologist, first met Nikola in high school. The two added to the Jokic family with the birth of their daughter in 2021. Nikola Jokic’s current contract is a five year $254 million supermax extension –the largest contract in NBA history for now, but for Denver Nugget fans Jokic is a treas ure, and though he wears number 15 on his jersey, it’s number 41 that should be framed and hanging from the rafters in Ball Arena.

A Female Fashion Dynasty

Irresistible family love, overwhelming empa thy, brainy forthright intellect, and a tanta lizing desire to succeed were instilled in the five Fendi sisters: Paola, Anna, Franca, Carla and Alda. Recognized among the most re nowned sisters in all of Europe, they have a unique history in the fashion industry. One and all shared the allure of imagination and wide-ranging curiosities, as well as the pre cious and rewarding introspective of life, and were responsible for developing Fendi into a billion-dollar dominant fashion showcase.

Fendi’s Rome

The dynasty began with a small but shrewd move in 1918 at the end of World War I when Adele Casagrande, 21, strikingly attractive, astute, and gifted, opened a small fur and leather shop on the corner of busy Via del Plebiscito in central Rome. Working with carefully selected leather, and creating hand-stitched handbags and quality leather goods, Adele was motivated by the expertise of dominant Italian saddlers, similar to Pa risian harness maker Thierry Hermes, origi nator of the Hermes family empire, who too was obsessed with the fortunes of leather. The word quickly spread and Adele’s smalland medium-sized leather creations were successful with the Romans who praised Adele for her surprising standard of work manship and artistically treated leather. Handsome and observant, Edoardo Fendi with a good eye for a young, gorgeous, and skilled entrepreneur, fell in love with Adele and her adroit management skills. Edoardo tenaciously pursued her and in 1925 the young couple married, moved to a building nearby, changed the store name to Fen di and during their first few years of mar riage lived in the rooms above the shop.

A Stellar Roster Of Talented Fendi Sisters

From 1931 to 1940 Adele was equally busy rais ing five daughters, Paola being the first born, Alda the last. The business slowly expanded and the sister’s youth was spent in the midst of the Fendi’s work rooms. They share tales of taking afternoon naps in the atelier’s purse drawers, playing with scraps of material, and growing up firmly rooted in the meticulous and problematic environment of fashion being, as they were, constant fixtures at the atelier. Unfortunately, Edoardo died in 1946 but Paola, age 15 was greatly inspired to help her mother. She led the way and by 1954 her teenaged sisters were all working in the shops part time while attending school. Uni ty was a catch phrase throughout their lives.

The Fendi Maison continued to develop and grow, moving to a former theater on via Bor gognona, combining the showroom, atelier, and workshops, and mounting a large photo of Adele in the entrance. The sisters collabo rated intensely to build a company based on unified concepts, the intimate expression of their ideals that revealed a loving meld of family togetherness, with each contributing her own emerging talents in a specific focus: Paola, inventive and artsy, became proficient in the involved development of furs; Fran ca was the designated store manager, and Head Purchaser interacting with the Roman clients; Carla with world-wide media lean ings was the Accounts Manager, and built up the global appreciation of the Maison; Alda was Director of the Ateliers, and trans actions; and the imaginative and resource ful, Anna, the second born, was the Head of Development, responsible for licensing and planning, and for overseeing the expansion of the entire Fendi collection for some 30 years, while also working in leather goods,

creating first-hand ideas, updating hand bags with an inventive softness to the touch using bracing and innovative materials. The sisters’ love of art was set, especially for the enthralled Carla, when Adele on Sundays gathered her five daughters and took them to visit and enjoy the local artists, all dressed in black and navy, unity incessantly the norm.

Fendi Lagerfeld Alliance

With the strength, ingenuity and discipline to apprehend that the five of them were lacking in sketching skills, and the Fendi Fashion Mai son was in need of a dramatic boost, in 1965 they hired Karl Lagerfeld to work with their fur line. The Lagerfeld Fendi collaboration was a fashion classic. Lagerfeld designed the “dou ble F” Fendi logo, created an incredible 70,000 original sketches during his 54 years with Fendi which is the longest relationship in the fashion industry between a designer and a Maison. His fur creations later caused a major controversy through he never wore fur and rarely ate meat.

The team of Lagerfeld and the sisters pro pelled Fendi upward to a dominate marketing influence launching a ready-to-wear line and footwear. His artistic creations were inspired by the cadence of the streets, of refinement, capricious genres, and a flexible imagination. Lagerfeld in a much quoted statement said the sisters are like the five fingers of a hand, their talents, a mixture of aesthetic diversi ty and a pride of place. During the 1970’s the world discovered Fendi. The Fendi collec tion was a colossal achievement in Florence and Milan, generated pronounced attention in Japan and the United States, with a Fen di boutique opening in Bergdorf & Good man Department Stores in 1975, and expand ed further until its reach was world-wide.

Adele and Edoardo Fendi

Fendi Family Goings

Adele died in 1978, age 81 her nurturing love and artistic upbringing of her five daugh ters, a masterpiece. The Fendi sisters, ce lebrities throughout Italy and the fashion industry, had eleven children and thirty plus grandchildren. Anna’s daughter, Silvia Ven turini, a third generation Fendi, continued the family tradition, working for years in the Maison, managing trunk shows in New York, and created the famed Baguette Bag in 1997 to be carried under the arm like a French loaf, a bag endorsed by Madonna and countless other personalities. Following the death of Karl Lagerfeld in 2019, Silvia was named Fendi’s sole Artistic Director; then Kim Jones, 42, in late 2020, took over the role, with Jones being only the second outside designer to work as Fendi’s artistic director.

Life After The Maison

Incredibly, Delfina Delettrez Fendi, daugh ter of Silvia, and great granddaughter of Adele, with an artistic upbringing similar to the original five sisters, began designing fashion jewelry in her late teens before launching her label in 2007 featuring hand made creations in collaboration with Ro man artisans and goldsmiths, and later ex panding to watches and cutlery. Delfina was quickly labeled, “The Fendi Family Jeweler.”

The Fendi Fountain Foundation

The sisters shared a deep love for Rome and formed a foundation, led by Carla and Alda, for the preservation of Rome’s historically important monuments, restoring five foun tains. In 2019, Fendi committed 2.5 million euros to restore the Temple of Venus and Roma, the largest temple of ancient Rome. Anna also restored the historic Villa Laeti tia, now a celebrated hotel and restaurant,

and was the first Italian woman to be hon ored with the international IWF Hall of Fame Award in Washington, for her commitment to supporting and fostering “made in Italy” beauty. The Italian minister of culture de scribed Carla as a major patron of the arts after the Carla Fendi Foundation became a major patron for the restoration of the famed Trevi Fountain. Carla, nicknamed The General, remained honorary president of the foundation until her death in 2017.

In 1999, LVMH, a French luxury holding company became the sole owner of Fendi, and today Silvia is the only family member still employed by Fendi. The sisters wove their love of family, tight family relation ships, and their determination into a suc cessful multi-generational fashion empire.

Colorado Cider: A Branch Above

Snow Capped Cider apple orchard sits at 6,130 ft. on the West ern Slope of the Rocky Mountains in Delta County, Colorado. The orchard’s high elevation combined with harsh growing conditions creates a fair share of challenges, but these ele ments are nothing new to Owner and Head Cidermaker Kari Williams and her family. These particular orchards, home to the Williams family for over 100 years, have recently pro duced some of Colorado’s finest and most awarded ciders.

In 2014, Kari and her husband initially started Snow Capped Cider as a side project to the family’s fruit growing busi ness. She quickly realized the high elevation gave way to hyper expressive flavors, which were unique to Colo rado grown cider apples. It was important to her to craft a Colorado cider without misrepresenting the bever age with any sort of artificial or additive ingredients. Kari has no formal education in cider making but dedicated her time to studying the craft, sourcing new apple va rieties, developing land and conducting growing trials.

Snow Capped Cider’s flagship ciders have received nu merous awards in national competition including the Gold Rush, a blend of English and French cider apples and the only Colorado cider to receive Number One Best in Class in the 2021 and 2022 GLINTCAP Competition, and the Plum & Lemongrass which received Platinum Honors at the 2022 CiderCraft Competition. Also available is a high-end, single varietal cider line, intended to be sipped similar to wine, with rare and specific cider apples such as Ashmead’s Ker nel, Dabinett, Kingston Black, Blanc Mollet and Harrison.

From apples to peaches to pears, everything is harvest ed by hand and produced on their zero waste family net work properties throughout Western Colorado. The la bor intensive process and trial and error that goes into each batch of cider has paid off with national recognition and expansion to neighboring states. Kari has achieved her original goal of putting Colorado cider on the map, but she will never stop working to perfect her craft.

Uchi Lobster Miso

Chef de Cuisine Andres Araujo

Ingredients:

2 each lobster tails

1 fl ounce yuzu marmalade Lemon juice to taste

Micro cilantro

Maldon salt to taste

Miso Beurre monte

2 ounces White miso paste

.5 lb butter

3.5 fl ounces water

Bok Choy kimchee

1 lb. baby bok choy

3.5 ounces ginger julienne

7 ounces carrots julienne

5.2 ounces green onion 1 ounce salt

.5 ounces sugar

Kimchee dressing

7 ounces Korean chili flakes

10 ounces soy sauce

1.5 ounces mirin 5 ounces rice vinegar

3.5 ounces cooked rice

Kiimchee preparation: Slice the Bok Choy on fine julienne, sprinkle the salt and sugar on top and make sure that is well integrated, let it set outside of the fridge for one day. Strain and rinse the bok choy, add the ginger, carrots and green onions and let it set aside.

Kimchee dressing preparation: Add all the ingredients in the blender and blend on High speed to obtain a smooth texture. Tip: the cooked rice helps to accelarate the fermentation process. Mix the dressing with the bok choy mix, cover with plastic wrap and let it set outside of the fridge for 3 days, after the 3 days mix and keep on the fridge for another 2 days before use.

Burre monte preparation: Mix the water and the miso, take it to high heat until starts boil. Low it to medium heat and add the cold butter little by little, while mixing with a wisk until create a perfect emulsion.

Lobster preparation: Take the lobster out of the shell and remove the vein. Place on a pot and cover it up with the miso beurre monte, and cook a very gentle heat for about 6 to 8 minutes or until it reach an internal temperature 140ºF. Place the tail over a towel paper and let it rest for 2 minutes, slice it.

Plating

Place the pre slice lobster on the plate. Add a few drops of fresh lemon juice. Add the yuzu marmelade on top of the lobster. Add maldon salt. Top it with mico cilantro. Finish the dish puring the hot sauce next to the lobster.

Hilton Los Cabos – Hospitality At Lands’ End

I’m fast becoming a Los Cabos aficionado, having recently enjoyed my third trip to Lands’ End at the very tip of southern Baja. For me, the journey was another huge winner. The Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort shines brilliantly on the Los Cabos Corridor that adorns the coast like a fluttering silk ribbon some 25 miles from San Jose del Cabo to Cabo San Lucas. The Hilton is about half-way between the two towns, resting in a dramatic ocean-front setting designed to highlight the Sea of Cortez and a dazzling horseshoe-shaped bay.

I traveled with my dedicated, nomadic colleague, Wendy, to cover the property editorially and to enjoy some down time, too. Focusing through the viewfinder of my camera before me is the elegant architecture of Mexico and the Mediterrane an expressed in wide, roomy corridors, columns and arches, marble flooring, and beamed ceilings complete with twirling ceiling fans. Rattan furniture and the un derstated yet stylish use of rich earth tones throughout the resort’s décor add a finishing touch.

I was anxious to tour the six-story hotel with camera in hand and was soon informed it had been built on this bluff in 2002 with great fanfare. The open-air lobby on the third floor has a large reflective pond, a Lobby Bar Lounge offering heady cocktails, a balcony with vistas of the coastline and swimming cove, a 24-hour extensive busi ness center, and a boutique with resort items. The property has four, large, outdoor swimming pools and an adults-only infinity design that swirls across the landscape among stands of palms and flaming bougainvillea. I walked the convenient side walk ramp that lead to the beach and passed a few vendors selling silver-styled jewelry. Cleverly, the Hilton has one of only two swimming areas along the entire Corridor, a rare asset indeed as Los Cabos is long noted for a strong undertow and tricky currents that can sweep a swimmer down the coast to Puerto Vallarta in a flash.

Golfers Nirvana

From the moment I arrived, it was impossible not to notice the aptness of the ho tel’s name. The resort is flanked on either side by the Cabo Real and El Dorado Golf Courses, both with sea front greens and magnificent views. Within easy walking distance, Cabo Real, a challenging 18-hole, par 72 beauty designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., has hosted a number of PGA tournaments. Five minutes away is the El Dorado, an 18-hole, par 72 course designed by Jack Nicklaus. Both courses will send a car or cart to pick up golf enthusiasts.

Learning that the property just completed a multi-million-dollar renovation, I saw proof in the 14, private, plunge pool suites and the ubiquitous feeling that everything was A-okay. “Luxurious” was my first thought as I entered my room. My hacienda-inspired suite was spacious with a private balcony offering an expansive view of the Sea of Cortez, the dra matic coastline, and a wide sandy beach. The bathroom was roomy with a Jacuzzi soaking tub and quality bath products set out to encourage the indulgence of time spent soaking away your ills while letting the sparkling sea view lift your spirit. The comfortable bed was dressed in Egyptian Cotton with turn down service, and a nice touch was the divine tropical aroma that you can personally select from an array of bouquets.

Our first day, we relaxed in the infinity pool and enjoyed lunch at the swim-up bar. My feeling at that moment was that travel can alleviate stress and nicely refocus your energy when abetted by an attentive staff and a soothing sea. We popped into Vela for dinner; the tropical ambience, Old World nostalgia, soft candle lights casting flickering shadows on the hand-blown fixtures, and an exquisite mural by a Mexican artist, set the mood. An eye-catching luminous sunset was painting the sky with brilliant cotton candy colors fur ther enhancing an unforgettable evening. The menu created by Executive Chef Mauricio Lopez is inspired by iconic traditions of Italy, France, and Spain, and replete with beloved dishes sprinkled with touches of tapas, and kept fresh by an infusion of local cuisine. Later, falling asleep was easy with images of the intense sunset still lingering in my imagination.

Breakfast on the second day was an incredible and bountiful buffet at Talavera with an open kitchen creating freshly baked pastries, tropical fruit specialties, eggs, and a range of hot dishes enlivened by tangy house-made salsas. For lighter dinerss, another option is to make a selection from their menu of a la carte creations, all sourced from local farmers and fishermen. The name Talavera refers to Mexico’s esteemed and honored, museum-quality tableware and pottery, an ancient Spanish and Mexican tradition crafted and hand-painted in Puebla Mexico, and collected by aficionados throughout the world.

Spa Time

I booked the Eforea Spa, a full-service complex complete with a steam room, and whirlpool. While draped in my bathrobe and sandals, I relaxed in the lounge before experiencing an exquisite 50-minute custom massage. Throughout, I was impressed by Eforea’s staff and their skilled attention to the minute details that are essential in a spa.

Cabo Wabo

It has become tradition, whenever I visit Los Cabos, to spend some time in Cabo San Lu cas and Cabo Wabo. On our third day, we stopped by to listen to the sounds of a local rock band. Cabo Wabo, a restaurant, bar and night club with their own signature brand of tequila. It was launched in 1990 by musician and song writer Sammy Hagar who was in quest of a place to relax with his friends and perform. Hagar’s much quoted explanation of the name is that, after observing a man walk unsteadily along a local beach after a heavy night’s partying, Hagar, using the town’s name Cabo and shortening “wobble” to “wabo,” described the man as doing the “Cabo Wabo.

On our last full day, the highlight was our time at a cliffside cabana at the Enclave beach club. The cabanas are open during the day with snug sofas sunshades, and views of the beach and endless surf below. We had a delicious lunch of fresh sushi and Japanese dishes at one of the other infinity pools. Both Wendy and I ordered the Poke Bowl with colorful cocktails which matched the ambiance perfectly. In the evening, we joined the traditional Dia de los Muertos celebration on the Black Marlin Terrace , enjoying Catrin and Catrina face paintings and time-honored dishes including the famed Pan de Muertos, a sweet bread traditionally baked in Mexico during the weeks leading up to Dia de los Muertos. A talented female mar iachi trio set the tone for the uplifting celebration in honor of friends and family who have passed. The buffet of local delicacies was exquisite and authentic, and it seems to me that the chefs here have forged their own style with lavish care.

Flying back to Denver the memories of Los Cabos were intense. Though I didn’t golf, I adore Hilton Los Cabos, and hopefully I will return again with days to spare.

Salt Lake City Savvy

After much thought and input from my staff, friends, and family, I’ve created a new feature in Denver Colorado Luxury Magazine. Mindful of our readers’ demanding schedules and unrelenting time constraints, the new feature will highlight stimulating destinations three hours or less from Denver. Ironically, I was recently asked to review Salt Lake City’s new downtown Hyatt Regency, a destination that fits perfectly in the “three hours or less” format.

After a quick 40 minutes in the air from Denver via Delta Airlines, we flew in low over The Great Salt Lake and touched down at Salt Lake City’s new airport. A 15-minute drive brought me to the downtown Hyatt Regency which opened October 2022, is ingeniously connected to the Salt Palace Convention Center, and is the largest hotel expansion in Salt Lake in some 20 years. The 26-story property with 700 rooms and suites is following in the footsteps of a city whose hotel history is intriguing.

Salt Lake’s Hotel History

For years, Salt Lake was celebrated throughout the United States for its elegant and palace-like Hotel Utah, noted for architectural beauty and, at the time, recognized as the ultimate hotel in the West. Founded in 1911 on the northeast corner of Main and South Temple Streets, the hotel hosted U.S. presidents, including John F. Kennedy, and many celebrities of the day. Named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, the LDS or Latter Day Saints church (Mormons) closed down the 76-year-old hotel in 1987, though it was considered the cultural heart of the city at the time, and repur posed the building for their headquarters and events. An alternate to the Hotel Utah, although a step down, was the Hotel Newhouse, 1912, but it was demolished in 1983 for a parking lot. The Hyatt Regency is now placing its name in the city’s hotel history book and is the brand’s first Hyatt Regency to open in Utah.

My first impressions of Salt Lake were mixed: our flight path on arrival gave us a clear view of the lake which, sadly, appeared to be drying up, and my first thought was that climate change was again leaving its mark. Later, I was told that the salty lake is in deed in extreme trouble. But the city itself is vital, booming with construction cranes casting long shadows over a downtown area that is reinventing itself with a fresh look. A new chic and modern airport, designed to high environmental standards will soon replace one that was some 50 years old. The city planners also deserve a gold star for the TRAX Green Line, a colossal convenience for residents and visitors alike, that runs from the airport five miles northeast of the city to downtown Salt Lake and connects to the West Valley as well. On the drive to the new Hyatt, the driver said that Salt Lake has one of the best public transportation systems in the country, utilizing commuter trains, buses and light-rail.

Location Location Location

The Hyatt Regency, attached to the Salt Palace Convention Center, is a staggering bonus to the business community, and only two blocks distant is the Vivint Arena, a sports and entertainment center, home of NBA’s Utah Jazz. In another massive windfall for the Hyatt Regency, the Vivint, seating capacity 18,000, is hosting the 72nd NBA All-Star Weekend, Feb ruary 18-19, 2023. Displaying the incredible talent of professional basketball, including our own Denver Nugget’s Nikola Jokic, a four-time NBA All-Star honored with two consecutive Most Valuable Player Awards, and possibly other Nugget players, and a sizable contingency of Denver fans too..

For all the ongoing events, the Hyatt Regency is far from just a convention property. Upon arriving, I toured the property and found that the designer’s clean lines create a modern ambience throughout. A rooftop terrace, heated pool, and cabanas allow visitors to get cozy and enjoy the impressive view, and a 24-hour fitness center made me tired just looking at the extensive collection of treadmills and weights. The rooms and sizeable suites have floorto-ceiling windows with panoramic views of the city and the Wasatch Mountains. I enjoyed a welcome cocktail at the Contribution Lounge and met General Manager Pina Purpero, who has undertaken the huge challenge of overseeing Salt Lake’s newest superstar.

Dinner was planned at the Salt Republic restaurant, located on the lobby level and conven ient for residents to drop by and experience talented, Peruvian-born, Chef Ryan Olivas’ de licious cooking. I was enticed first by his Burrata prepared with a delightful pistachio pesto, dressed with a delightful apple gastrique, and served on grilled sourdough bread, and then by a flavorsome butternut squash soup that could be an award winner. The entrée was an incredibly tender Bison short rib with red eye jus that melted off the bone, seasoned with black garlic and truffles. The unsettling name caught my attention, and I ordered the Funeral Potatoes, to find they are a comforting and delicious casserole dish served at LDS funerals with a base of shredded hash browns, sour cream, chopped onions, cream of chicken soup and cheese. Funerals aside, it’s a delectable dish. The California Meiomi Pinot Noir was also the perfect choice for this special dinner, as was the honey ganache chocolate pie, and a taste of the strawberry jelly pie. I was aware that Salt Lake is honored as a distinguished din ing city and Chef Ryan Olivas is a wonderful addition to the local dining scene.

Copious Neighborhoods

On my second day in Salt Lake, I scampered off to enjoy a city Jeep tour with Ryan Mack, Director of Salt Lake’s Media Communications. The city is clean with wide streets and again I could see the construction cranes rising high, giving silent witness to a city in major tran sition mode. A university city where the University of Utah reigns supreme, there are lots of parks, and some ten designated neighborhoods. The hip Sugar House neighborhood is one of the city’s oldest with a varied mix of restaurants, art galleries, bookstores, boutiques, and the 110-acre Sugar House Park which is crossed by bike trails winding through the bountiful natural landscape. The colorful Granary and Ballpark District was once an industrial area but has been reinvented with restaurants, breweries, and the home of the AAA Salt Lake Bees baseball team.

The affluent Olympus Cove area has winding streets with gorgeous homes, the Capitol Hill neighborhood is anchored by the Utah State Capitol with its rotating art exhibits, and of course there is the booming downtown neighborhood. Following the tour, lunch was hosted at the Franklin Ave restaurant, once home to the Franklin Avenue Variety Theatre, 1891, and serving exceptional entrees from Spain, Italy, Japan, and Thailand.

Mar/Muntanya

Executive Chef Tyson Peterson created a scrumptious farewell dinner in Mar/Muntanya, the Regency’s showcase dining destination. The themed restaurant with floor to ceiling win dows, carried guests to Northern Spain complete with Flamenco music and a female Fla menco dancer with moves the Spaniards love. Along with other journalists, we were pre sented with the executive chef’s tasting menu with tapas starters such as Crispy Brussels Sprouts served with Iberico bacon, hazelnuts and pomegranate honey. Also on the menu were local sherry glazed mushrooms, and crunchy papas bravas, dressed with garlic aioli and salsa bravas. Another version of Funeral Croquettas was created with a cheesy hash, brown casserole fritters, pickled Fresno chiles, and scallion aioli.

The entrees were Grilled Octopus dotted with potato puree, bits of chorizo, garlic and lemon; a roasted elk tenderloin with potato puree, Iberic bacon, blackberry jus, and sage crumbs. For me, the Paella Mar was similarly outstanding. Paella can be prepared in several ways de pending upon the area of Spain, and Chef’ Peterson’s paella was created with la bomba rice, rock shrimp, mussels, piquillo peppers, peas, saffron, confit chicken thighs, and Bilbao chori zo. For dessert, we were offered the classic cinnamon churros, with Leatherby’s hot fudge and caramel on the side, or a delightful sour cream cheesecake flavored with a Spanish Rioja wine Sauce and harvest cherry conserva. Before dinner I had some time to explore Salt Lake on my own. The city is quite progressive, which is contrary to what people might think, with a large LGBQ community, and a flour ishing arts and culture scene. Nature here is wonderfully overpowering with the Wasatch Mountains always looming, and Little Cotton Wood Canyon providing vibrantly colorful fall foliage. Both mountains and canyon are key destinations for outdoor pursuits. In 40-minutes visitors can be in Park City and experiencing some of the nation’s finest skiing. There was hardly enough time to fully experience Salt Lake, but hopefully on my next visit to the city I can dig even deeper.

Palm Springs Modernism

The mistress of weather was kind to me as I landed in Palm Springs, met my friend Roger Hublitz, a journalist who helped me with this article, and was greeted by a sparkling warm sun that thankfully was far from Palm Springs hot. It was my first visit to Palm Springs and I was there along with other media from throughout the world, to cover editorially the Eighth Annual Palm Springs Modernism Fall Show, Friday, October 14th to Monday the 17th. My first and most lasting impression of Palm Springs is that it’s a big, bold, and strik ing region with lingering sunsets and desert splendor that spreads like a great tapestry of textures around the horizon. A sun-blessed city of brilliant low-hanging stars, and long, ever-changing shadows that shift with the sun as they drape across mountain ridges and hidden canyons.

The awe-inspiring setting, attracting celebrities and entertainment luminaries, is a surpris ing and curious marriage of desert and mountains. Towering above Palm Springs and the valley are the prominent Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains, a scenic backdrop giving perpetual testimony to the region’s incredible diversity. In the 1930s, the Hollywood crowd began hanging out at the famed Racquet Club. Created by movie stars for movie stars, it became the “in” place to be, and a celebrity haven for the next 40 years to stars like Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy, Cary Grant, and Marilyn Monroe. Others such as President Ford, Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Kirk Douglas, and Sonny and Cher moved to the Palm Springs area, built gorgeous homes, and became involved in business, the arts, and fund raising.

Palm Springs Modernism Fall Show

Hollywood pizazz aside, we were excited to experience the Modernism Show, a non-profit event that passionately applauds midcentury architecture, preservation, and sustainable contemporary living as embodied in the greater Palm Springs area. Modernism Week also offers twilight and self-guided tours to significant homes, buildings, and neighborhoods.

Architectural Enchantment

The mistress of weather had heated things up to 102 F, but nevertheless we hopped on the double-decker bus tour which offered media representatives a visual feast of Palm Spring’s architecture, blending classic Spanish Colonial Revival and sleek midcentury Modern de signs and roamed the Movie Colony and Frank Sinatra’s Neighborhood, passing Sinatra’s own avant-garde modernist jewel by renowned architect E. Stewart Williams. The tour also highlighted stunning modern architecture with iconic soaring “butterfly” rooflines in the first midcentury neighborhood built by the Palm Springs Alexander Construction Compa ny.

We experienced Casa Cody, a historic 1924 hotel, and learned about the first golf course built by Thomas O’Donnell. Today there are more than 100 golf courses in Greater Palm Springs, the most per capi ta of any place in the world. We enjoyed a lunch pause with other journalists at the lovely Kaiser Grill restaurant, where we were given all the details on Modernism Week in February 2023.

Overall Palm Springs is a splendid din ing destination. Dinner was scheduled at Lulu. Opened in 2011, the hip Bis tro offers home-style California cui sine, and it was easy to appreciate why Lulu is so popular with the residents.

The Modernism Show

Saturday morning breakfast was at Farm’s outdoor patio. The attractive res taurant recalled wonderful memories of a visit to Tuscany. Entering the spacious Palm Spring Convention Center, we were confronted with 30 live events, 45 pre mier national and international decora tive and fine arts dealers, displaying the finest in modern design, and innovative 21st century, along with 20th century vin tage furniture and designs for the home. There were 14,000 guests last year with 74% of them repeat visitors, and to me it seemed most had returned again. The fields of interest listed Architecture at the top followed by Interior design, Land scape design, Photography and Fashion. We observed MCM home décor and art, Disco Inferno, and Casual Concours, the desert’s fabulous midcentury car show, which is an annual collection of signif icant post-war automobiles, with over 200 museum-quality cars on display.

Springs Tennis Club dating to the 1930’s. Their menu features American cuisine with a French-Pacific Rim inspiration.

I ordered a yummy wedge salad tossed with blue cheese dressing, candied wal nuts, bits of bacon, and strawberries.

Sunday, for me, was the highlight of the trip. We began the day at Wilma & Freida’s with a delightful blackber ry stuffed French toast and then expe rienced the House of Tomorrow Home Tour at the newly renovated Alexan der Estate where Elvis and Priscilla. Presley honeymooned in 1967. For those in search of a nifty Palm Springs estate it’s for sale for 5 million plus. Another bus trip took us to some of the neighboring cities such as Indian Wells and Palm De sert to acquire a sense of place and the day ended with dinner at Wang’s in the Desert and a plate of inviting Dim Sum and Beef Chow Fun, cho sen from an enticing menu of excellent Pan-Asian creations for another time.

Monday was getaway day with breakfast at Sherman’s Deli & Bakery in the form of fresh sliced knox lox and a soft cream cheese platter delightful enough to re mind me of my haunts back in Manhat tan. There was time for shopping, and we discovered the Fashion Fix boutique on Palm Canyon and I purchased several love ly hats from Madagascar and matching Maxi dresses before heading to the airport.

Little Nell and the Snowmass Wine and Food Festival

A Lady of the Night?

It was my first ever visit to the Little Nell Hotel and to Aspen’s Snow mass Wine and Food Festival. The drive from Denver took just over three hours, past glorious autumn leaves and a transformation of color that was just reaching its peak. We arrived in late afternoon, the sun sitting low in the sky. The hotel, 175 miles from Denver, located on the fringe of downtown, is absolutely unique to Aspen with ski-in, ski-out access to Aspen Mountain. I was traveling with one of best friends, Erin, and was eager to see first-hand why Little Nell, year after year, is re garded among North America’s top ski resorts, and why Little Nell is Aspen’s only Five-Star, Five-Diamond property. The hotel has hosted Presidents, world-wide celebrities, and international skiers of all levels, nevertheless, for all the hotel’s prestigious honors and accolades, the other question most intriguing me concerns the hotel’s fascinating name. The name Little Nell has been spinning around in my thoughts like a titillating dare.

Mystifying Little Nell

Before my trip to Aspen, I read, repeatedly, that Little Nell was a lady of the night, and perhaps the namesake of a miner’s uphill claim. Mining during the 1800’s was little more than chasing dreams, so was Little Nell someone’s cherished dream? Did the miner and Little Nell slip away to gether? Did Little Nell become wealthy and marry a prominent Aspen businessperson? Charles Dickens had a character in his Victorian novel, “The Old Curiosity Shop,” 1841, named Little Nell Trent, so maybe the Aspen miner during the booming silver rush from 1879 to 1893 read Charles Dickens. Or perhaps Aspen was Little Nell’s final resting place? Certainly, fascinating hearsay has been passed down through the years, but regardless of the yarns that were told at the time, the name Little Nell has become renowned.

Along with my staff, I further researched the mysterious Little Nell, and thanks to the Aspen Historical Society read that Nellie Otis, who was in and out of court at the time, ran a “Temple of Recreation” on the west corner of Durant and Galina. But there was another active lady of the night, Nellie Kirk, called Nellie or Miss Nellie. Perhaps the miner tagged one of them with the affable nickname, Little Nell, and then chris tened his claim the same? In any event, Little Nell has since chalked up a mountain trail to her name, and then years later, in front of a huge gathering on the closing day of the popular Little Nell Ski hangout, an announcement was made: on the following day construction was to begin on the now world-renowned Little Nell Hotel, which opened its doors in 1989. Whoever she was, Aspen’s mysterious lady has claimed a slice of the city’s historic fabric, and her name is alive and well.

Little Nell and the Snowmass Wine and Food Festival

Arriving at Little Nell, we were presented with a champagne toast at check in; there were smiles all around. Just off the lobby in the plush garden courtyard, I was delighted to see a heated swimming pool and hot tub, and then while strolling about the gorgeous grounds I observed lavish landscaping, a blend of modern and classic architecture with chic modern art, and a renewed artistic style incorporating a palette of blues, grays, and tans, offering a feeling of warmth and relaxation. I think Little Nell would approve.

Our appealing room was designed with two queen beds, a fireplace, a bathroom with dou ble basins, and impressive high-quality amenities such as hypo-allergenic bedding, and June Jacobs Bath & Beauty Products, noted for their preservative-free antioxidant blends. There was also a Lavazza Blue Espresso Maker, a Fellow Corvo Electric Tea Kettle with Rishi tea, and a complimentary mini bar with non-alcoholic beverages, refreshed daily. While drop ping off our luggage, the employee explained the room was equipped with Chromecast, a Bose Bluetooth Speaker, wireless internet access upon request, and 24-hour in-room dining, and then offered to unpack our luggage, which we declined. The welcome note, which ac companied a box of Laudre Macarons, my favorite, and a chilled bottle of champagne, was a nice touch.

Snowmass Wine Festival

The following day we popped over to the 20th anniversary of the annual Snowmass Wine Festival in Snowmass Village and Town Park, hosted by the Rotary Club. The Snowmass folks really know how to celebrate. We joined a crowd that was appreciating the festival, danced to live music, and enjoyed wines from the U.S. and Europe while winery delegates shared their expertise. Celebrity Chef, Susie Jimenez, vivacious and striking, created a food pairing with Tequila. Susie’s parents from Michoacan, Mexico were farm workers, and from age six Susie spent summers picking fruit in Central California. She began preparing her own food at the age of nine, later graduated from California Culinary Academy in 2001, and after working in Aspen for more than twenty years, has become a momentous success with her Latin-in spired cuisine with a modern touch.

Back at Little Nell we enjoyed a casual dining experience at AJAX located adjacent to the Gondola. I selected French Onion Soup, Mussels with Fennel, and Wagyu Chorizo in a light white wine broth. The hotel is distinguished for service and the service was superior.

Dining Element 47

Brunch at Element 47 was a highlight. The name appropriately pays tribute to silver, the pre cious metal that first put Aspen on the map. The restaurant is a colossal award-winner offer ing New American, Colorado Contemporary Cuisine. The menu’s highpoint is Wagyu Beef, originally derived from native, carefully selected, Japanese cattle that have become a na tional treasure in Japan. I believe the Element 47 chefs have further broadened the creation. Oenophiles are also at home here with international award-winning programs enhanced by a wine cellar with an incredible collection of 20,000 bottles. The smiling sommelier said, “Each bottle of wine has a distinct personality, and each has a story to tell.” Little Nell has graduated eleven of North America’s Master Sommeliers, the most of any establishment in North America, and for those who enjoy the art of wine, one intriguing option is to dine in the Wine Cellar.

An Overview

Little Nell has the personality of casual ease with elegance at every turn and offers services unique to hotels such as a luggage shipping service, complimentary notary services, oxygen rentals, arrangements for charter flights, car wash service, complimentary skier shuttles to all four mountains of Aspen Snowmass, and the concierge can arrange lift tickets, rentals and lessons, and, in the summer months, complimentary road bikes. On property is a popu lar Health Center with a full range of massages which, unfortunately, we didn’t have time to visit. Another suggested booking opportunity is Residences at Little Nell which are fashion able, privately owned condominiums available by the week or month.

In retrospect, Little Nell deserves its exceptional reputation, and moreover Aspen is fortunate to have an enigmatic Lady of the Night sharing her name with the hotel, the city, and the world.
