A little bit of history

Cheltenham has been described as “the most complete Regency town” due to the large number of Regency style buildings many of them listed Grade II and Grade II*. Cheltenham came to attention after King George III came to the town for 5 weeks in 1788 to take the spa waters as a cure. The town became extremely fashionable from then on especially in the Regency period from 1811 to 1820 when King George III was deemed unfit to rule and his son George IV was created Regent. By 1850 Cheltenham was the largest town in Gloucestershire with 35,000 inhabitants. The building boom continued into George IV’s reign with fortunes being made and lost with some of the most notable examples of the latter being the grand development of Pittville by Joseph Pitt and John Forbes including the Grade I Listed Pittville Pump Rooms, imposing houses and the pleasure gardens and boating lake.

Why move to Cheltenham? The town is home to National Hunt racing with its fabulous race course at Prestbury Park with its backdrop of the Cotswold Hills and is also home to one of the oldest annual cricket festivals and other festivals including literary, jazz and science festival. There are good sporting amenities including gyms and swimming pools, a croquet club, tennis and hockey club as well as a 1930’s Lido swum in by no 8

less than Tarzan or rather by the actor who played him, Johnny Weismuller. The town has 2 theatres including the wonderful Everyman Theatre which opened in 1891. Cheltenham has a council that supports and looks after its trees and we have some very beautiful trees in the town centre including some lovely Cedars. There are plenty of green spaces in the town

including Pittville Park, Sandford Park, Imperial Gardens, Montpellier Gardens, Clarence Square and Wellington Square. Leckhampton Hill and Cleeve Hill are both on the doorstep with acres of green land to walk and the famous Devil’s Chimney to look at on Leckhampton Hill – a stack of rock believed to have been created by the quarry workers.

I deal with the creation of the brief, the design work and negotiations with other professionals, including planners, from inception to planning permission and beyond, if required. Each project is individual and unique and I approach it with an open mind to explore all of the opportunities the property allows. The design must be sympathetic to any existing buildings or context, whether in an identical or contrasting style. I aim to collaborate fully with my clients to develop an appropriate and thorough brief which generates a design solution that exceeds their functional and aesthetic expectations. Tell us about the background of extendArchitecture? Since leaving Sheffield University with a Degree in Architecture, a Diploma with Distinction in Architecture, an M.A. in Architecture, and the RIBA Silver Medal in 1983, I have worked as a design architect with highly-regarded private practices in Bath, Bristol, Dubai and the Seychelles. With over 35 years of experience, I have been involved in the design and implementation of residential, commercial, industrial and health projects of all sizes. I founded extendArchitecture in 2011 to specialise in residential design. Since then, I have designed hundreds of new houses and extensions in the South-West, including work on Listed Buildings and properties in Conservation Areas. What’s your customer process from receiving that initial enquiry? An initial enquiry is followed by a meeting at the property to introduce myself, answer queries, view the building and site and obtain an understanding of the potential clients’ requirements. The brief, which is fundamental to the process, is developed and a planning survey of the property is carried out. Multiple design options are explored prior to commencing detailed architectural design. Preliminary design layouts and sketches are produced to establish a satisfactory scheme, which is then progressed to a full planning submission, or beyond, if required. What characteristics set you apart from other practices? Because I am a sole practitioner, no project is delegated to other staff. I can focus my complete

Could you illustrate an example of a residential development you worked on locally and the outcome for your client? Every project is notable and pleasing in its own way. One local example would be the design of a new house to replace an unattractive 1970s bungalow on a 0.05 hectare site in Charlton Kings. The challenge was to design a very contemporary, detached two-storey four-bedroom home in keeping with its surroundings where neighbouring properties were a mix of bungalows and two-storey detached houses. Collaboration with my clients and discussions with the planners were detailed and complex, but ultimately extremely rewarding. The end result was a very spacious house incorporating light-filled open plan living spaces opening on to a generous private garden. The architectural aesthetic achieved was distinctly modern but the massing and careful use of beautiful traditional materials (albeit in a more abstract manner) meant that the house was sympathetic to its neighbours, creating an elegant addition to the streetscape and a glorious space in which to live and thrive. What is the most pleasing aspect of your job? The most rewarding aspects of the process are: exceeding the clients’ brief through the creation of buildings and spaces that enhance lives; designing buildings that conserve energy and world resources through responsible sourcing of materials, sustainable design and renewable energy solutions where possible; and the design of buildings and spaces with inherent flexibility and future adaptability. Well-planned buildings should be unpretentious yet self-assured, and should make the lives of the users easier, more comfortable and more fulfilling.

Meet coombes:everitt Architects Tell us what inspired you to become architects It was really borne from the desire to bring the benefit of good design to all kinds of buildings – both in terms of creating beautiful spaces to live, while also taking a more holistic approach to design that incorporates the wider issues that we are facing such as the environment and the recent energy crisis. It’s not just about designing new homes, but also about improving and reinvigorating existing properties and looking at how we can bring the best design and energy efficient solutions to these.. How does this translate into the way you work at coombes:everitt? We want to know what’s important to our clients. We take the time to understand how they want to live so that we can create spaces that really work for them. After all, who would have thought five years ago that having an office or study in the house would become the norm for so may of us! We then translate these ideas into sketches, computer aided designs, or virtual reality technology – whatever works best to bring a particular design to life for our client. We do enjoy projects which present an interesting design challenge, whether that’s creating a new dwelling or taking an existing structure and transforming it – coming up with designs that delight our clients.
