Fall 2020

Letter from the Director Dear NMC Community, I hope you are doing well in these challenging times. The Extended Educational Services (EES) catalog represents to me a cornucopia of our incredible community; a collective and impressive set of knowledge, expertise, passion, outreach, and fascinating natural resources. I hope you feel this connection too, as you browse through the following pages.

Registration for Fall classes is open!

Human connection is always significant, and seems especially so during this far from normal COVID world. As we navigate these times together (and apart), thank you for staying connected with our team, with learning, and with this strong community.

Register online at nmc.edu/ees or see forms on page 46. View campus safety guidelines at nmc.edu/keepsafe.

Our team has been busy creating fall classes that provide the variety of learning you requested we continue, with instructors whom you love, delivered in a safe format. Most of our fall classes are livestream or online for your convenience. A few classes are scheduled to meet face to face with safety measures in place. Our website will be continually updated with new classes and safety information. Stay connected with new and upcoming offerings through our enews – subscribe at nmc.edu/ees.

Want to teach a class?

We are extremely fortunate to have an innovative and talented team who has risen to this creative challenge and created new programming such as our new podcast: NMC Driveways. In order to continue the high quality programming you experience with EES, we have also had to make some prudent decisions. As a result, the LIFE (Learning Is Forever) discount is no longer available. We employ a fair pricing model on our classes and programs, and financial assistance applications are available.

Send your ideas along with your background in your topic area to ees@nmc.edu. We are now planning courses for January-May 2021.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES: Chris M. Bott, Chair Rachel A. Johnson, Vice Chair Michael Estes, Secretary Jane T. McNabb, Treasurer Douglas S. Bishop K. Ross Childs Kennard R. Weaver NMC President, Nick Nissley

Benefits of Educating Employees on Retirement Planning (Livestream)

Raising Awareness: Strategy and Evaluation of Advocacy Efforts (Online)

As an employer, there are benefits to keeping your employees informed about their retirement and financial well-being, with responsibility being lifted from Social Security and employer pension plans to the individual employee. The majority of U.S. workers have no idea how much money they really need to accumulate for retirement, and many don’t know where to start or how to develop a plan. By educating your employees, you help increase involvement in employer-sponsored retirement plans and communicate that your company cares about its employees and the type of retirement they will have. Instructor Claudia F. Rodriguez has over 20 years of experience in the finance industry, most recently as a financial advisor with Edward Jones. An Accredited Asset Management Specialist (AAMS), she holds Masters and Bachelors degrees in Business Administration from Davenport University and an Associates from NMC.

Raising awareness is not enough! Social change is baked into the work of many mission driven organizations, but is it effective? Exactly what change are you after? Do you know if your efforts are working? This course is designed to support staff of nonprofit organizations in using planning and evaluation tools to increase the effectiveness of social change advocacy campaigns. You will be guided through case studies, planning tools and evaluation methods specific to advocacy work. This course emphasizes strategy and evaluation.

Marine Technology Student Profile An interview with Kelly Smith, 4th Year, Bachelor of Science - Marine Technology student What brought you to NMC Marine Tech? When I started my college journey, I was completely undecided on what path to take. Out of curiosity, I signed up for the UAS (drones) class and discovered a passion for technology but a dislike of gravity. However, piloting an underwater ROV doesn’t require fighting gravity. This led to enrolling in NMC’s bachelor’s degree in Marine Technology. What has been the most rewarding experience while in the program? Just one? If I had to pick, it would be my work on the Hardy Dam project. The report I wrote provided me the opportunity to present our findings to our client and led to our program being granted $50,000 towards new equipment! This resulted in me being invited to present at the Underwater Intervention conference in New O r l e a n s , wh e r e I m e t various industry professionals, one of which set me up with my summer internship.

Marine Technology student, Kelly Smith, pictured on left Tell us about your summer internship. My internship this summer has me relocating to Buffalo, NY where I will work on various projects for one of the industry’s leading companies. My first project will be in California performing a long tunnel inspection using an ROV. With this degree, you can choose to work offshore, in an office, or a combination of both. Any words of advice for prospective students or someone looking for a new career? The greatest aspect of our program is that class sizes are small and you work closely with all of your instructors. Be active, ask questions, and get to know your instructors and they will be your biggest advocates. And work tirelessly to get the best opportunities for your future career.

INSTRUCTOR SPOTLIGHT

An interview with photography instructor Chris Doyal

Where does your passion for photography come from? For me it’s all about feeding the creative animal. Capturing the perfect moment and telling a great story in a photograph. What do you love most about teaching? I love seeing eyes light up and hearing people say “I always wondered about that!” I once had a student who tried everything to get good results from her camera. She was so frustrated that she was ready to go back to her phone to take photos. After taking the class, and learning some of the basics, she was anxious to spend more time getting to know her camera. She left the class with a huge smile on her face. How has photography enriched your life? Photography has allowed me to travel around the world capturing images of some truly remarkable animals that most people never get to see in person. Sharing those images with others is truly rewarding. If you could only share one tip for photography newbies, what would it be? Get close and fill the frame!

Photography Understanding Your DSLR Camera (Face to Face) Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) and the newer mirrorless cameras are far more complex than ordinary point and shoot cameras. Learn how to identify and adjust the most commonly used functions of your DSLR camera in an actual hands-on outdoor environment. Bring your DSLR camera with a fully charged battery, a memory card and your questions. Not suitable for point and shoot cameras. Are We Becoming Two Americas? (Livestream) Are we concerned about a divided America? Contemporary political polarization dominates the daily news and much of our conversation. Deep political division, however, is only one element of an increasingly divided America. Behind politics, there is an even more serious slide toward “Two Americas.” The broader division is seen in social and economic patterns and threatens to lead to a country very different from what we have known. We will examine the ways this departs from our vision for America and present some possible responses to the issue. 2 Thurs., Nov. 12 & 19 1:30-3:30 p.m. Instructor: Phil Mikesell

Individual Freedom and the Common Good (Livestream) From the beginning, Americans have embraced seemingly conflicting political goals. The Declaration of Independence emphasizes Americans’ “inalienable [individual] rights.” The Constitution sets as one of its purposes “To promote the general welfare.” Historically, public policy issues typically have been less about either/or and more about balance. Throughout US history, finding the ‘right’ balance between individual freedom and collective good has guided policy making. When war or other external threats appear, Americans come together, but in ‘normal’ times we tilt heavily toward our own narrower interests. Today, Americans seem skeptical of government programs aiming at any sort of common purpose. Does that matter? And if so, what might be done to restore a fruitful balance between narrow and broader interests? 2 Thurs., Oct. 22 & 29 1:30-3:30 p.m. Instructor: Phil Mikesell

The First Amendment: Free Speech and Religion (Livestream) The First Amendment to the Constitution states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech.” But what does that mean, exactly? Where does the free speech of one person or group conflict with the sensibilities or protections of another? What about hate speech? Antiwar protests? When does the free exercise of religious beliefs effectively constitute the establishment of religion? We know that debates and controversy rage on issues that touch our deeply held religious and/or philosophical beliefs, such as abortion, war, sexual preferences, vaccinations, whether to preserve certain war memorials, etc. Together, we will discuss the scope of these First Amendment freedoms and cover some of the key U.S. Supreme court decisions on these issues. Reading materials will be sent via email. Be prepared for lively class discussions. 4 Thurs. Oct. 8-29 2-4 p.m. Instructor: Eleanor Lynn, J.D.

Parenting Inspired by Adler (Livestream)

Wellness Building Balance (Livestream) From your foot to your inner ear, your ability to balance can be strengthened in three specific systems. Join experts to learn about these systems and the common issues that affect balance: vision, hearing, strength, medications, viruses, vestibular problems and more. Practice vestibular exercises to strengthen the messages the inner ear sends to the brain, somatosensory exercises to improve the nerve pathways from our muscles and joints to the brain, and discover how our visual system can over or under function in complex environments. Do not wait for a fall to occur to start building your balance!

Why do children act out? Early 20th century philosopher and psychiatrist Alfred Adler’s teachings explain some reasons behind difficult behavior and how to improve the relationships between parents and children. Learn an alternative called the “encouragement approach” to the “praise and rebuke” strategies that many of us use to attempt to change undesired behavior. Discuss practical tips and strategies that aim to help our children accept themselves as they are, see other people as comrades, and develop a desire to help others. We’ll also consider better ways to communicate with our kids during life’s peak stress moments, when anger and frustration can feel overwhelming. INSTRUCTOR SPOTLIGHT Yoga, COVID, and Floods - Oh My! How this Traverse City duo made it through and continue pressing onward Thirty-six years ago, Libby Robold began her yoga teaching career at NMC. That experience and her passion for yoga therapy encouraged her to broaden her training, leading her to a yoga therapy and art teaching position in special education with TBAISD while continuing teaching through NMC’s Extended Education. Her husband, Michael, an avid practitioner and yoga teacher himself, followed suit, and in 2002, the duo opened Yoga for Health Education (YHE) at the Village at Grand Traverse Commons—first business in the development! 19 years later, they remain dedicated to helping people find their creative spark and path to inner peace through yoga, yoga therapy and healthy lifestyle education. In a normal year, YHE offers 50 or more classes a week for people of all ages and abilities. On this journey, they have always remained connected with NMC. “I love teaching at NMC and am delighted to be able to stay connected with the NMC community through Extended Education,” says Libby. “With a background as public school teachers, it was a natural connection for us to bring our curriculum based classes, such as Yoga for Teens, Yoga for Arthritis & Stiff Bodies, and many more, to the community education platform.” -Michael. Through the COVID-19 shut down, the Robolds learned to operate their community yoga school differently. After moving to an online platform in April, virtual learning was a difficult transition. With fine tuning, they were able to roll out a well-rounded schedule of virtual class options. Another challenge hit in the form of a rainstorm in May, flooding the Grand Traverse Mercato and lower levels, destroying floors in six YHE rooms, and doing impressive damage to the studio. “We wondered how we would ever replace 3,000 square feet of flooring, maintain classes and stay afloat,” says Michael. 36 |

Michael & Libby Robold

Co-directors, Yoga for Health Education Just as they were thinking they may have to close the doors, students and friends contributed to a “Restore the Floor Campaign” and, in three weeks time, raised enough money to replace all the floors. Now, over two months later, the studio dazzles with beautiful waterproof cork and the Robolds, YHE staff and their students, will feel at home, again.

“We are beyond grateful. It is a miracle and demonstrates the power of how each of us, giving or contributing a little to any worthwhile cause, can make change in the world; we can make a difference. Our students saved our yoga center. We can all ask ourselves, what is important to us on a daily basis here, in our town, our life, and how can we help?” — Libby All during this journey, NMC’s EES department and YHE remained in sync, as we all were challenged to figure a new way of operating. NMC offered Yoga for Health Education ways to stay connected, offering helpful programs for our community. “As long as we are in motion, and as long as NMC wants to be our community partner, we are on board,” concludes Michael. Qigong to Increase Energy and Reduce Stress (Livestream)

Tapping: Energy Work to Impact Your Life and Health (Livestream)

Qigong is an ancient system of selfcare and self-healing that combines slow gentle movement with breath and intention. It is currently seeing a resurgence because it is simple, easy to learn, can be done by anyone at any age and fitness level, and has tremendous benefits. Learn how to increase your energy, create more balance, and relax your mind. Walk out of the class each week with more vitality, flexibility, clarity and peace of mind. All are welcome!

Want to reduce stress? Tapping is an energy protocol that works with acupressure points, meridians and thoughts to reduce the fight, flight, freeze response to stress. This calms the nervous system, which signals your body to relax. Use the techniques in this class to open the flow of energy and allow your body to naturally heal itself both physically and emotionally. Each participant will leave empowered with personally meaningful techniques and the ability to create more protocols to address future needs. Recommended text, The Tapping Solution: A Revolutionary System for Stress-Free Living by Nick Ortner (available on Amazon, ISBN: 1401939422).

Great communication is the basis of any fulfilling relationship. But most of us will choose someone who communicates differently than we do. Those who need to verbally process often choose those who need to get away and think about it. In the end, it is often not the issue at hand that causes stress in a relationship, but the manner in which each partner communicates. Knowing how to communicate with this person who is put together differently than you is essential for a happy relationship. This FUN, small investment will take your relationship to the next level. ALL adult couples of all ages welcome. Register one individual from each couple so you pay the fee only once (price is $129 per couple).

Audio Technology Student Profile An interview with Silvio Ciccone, NMC Audio Technology student

What brought you to NMC’s Audio Technology program? Working in the music industry has always intrigued me in one way or another. I felt I needed a better education that would not only help my knowledge of audio and music but also help to open doors, and present opportunities that weren’t formerly available. What are some cool/ interesting experiences that you’ve had because of your involvement in the NMC Audio Technology program?

NMC Audio Technology student, Silvio Ciccone, pictured in center What are your plans after graduating? I plan to keep doing all of the things that this program has opened up for me. Currently, I’m working at David Chown’s Lookout Music Production Studio in Traverse City, directing video broadcasts for the Traverse City Pitspitters baseball team, providing A/V Tech for Central United Methodist Church as well as independent contractor work with a few different A/V companies around Michigan.

For more information on NMC’s Audio Technology program, email music@nmc.edu (231) 995-1338

Fall 2020

Over the last two years I’ve had so many amazing experiences. I would have to say that the feeling I had my first time behind a professional live sound mixing board, with sound coming out of a professional PA that I was controlling, was incomparable. Working up at the Grand Hotel at Mackinac Island doing A/V tech is also always an amazing experience.

How did NMC prepare you for your transition into a career in Audio Tech? NMC helped prepare me in the best way possible, with “real world” events that are maintained at a high level of professionalism while also allowing me to learn and ask questions. NMC professors didn’t just show me how to do what I needed to, they made sure I knew and understood the reason why, and in this field of work I really believe that is imperative. What would you say to students who are considering the NMC Audio Technology program? Don’t hesitate! NMC provided me with two life changing years that I will never forget and I mean that in the best way possible.
