Ensuring Accessible Learning for Students with Special Needs

Ensure every student succeeds

As states adopt more rigorous academic standards, schools must define how special education fits into standards-aligned curricula, instruction, and assessment. What will educators find most valuable in the book Yes We Can!? Educators will explore why special education practices evolved the way that they have and then determine the necessary shifts in culture and mindset in order to see improvements. Yes We Can! guides both general and special educators in reconsidering some deeply embedded practices and habits that have been negatively impacting our success in closing the gap.

Why is a collaborative partnership between general and special education important for closing achievement gaps? All means all. Schools will hit a brick wall in their attempt to improve outcomes for kids across the board if they do not begin to shift mindsets and practices around our most at-risk students. When general and special educators stop seeing themselves as living in two separate silos and instead collaborate as members of one team, then we may stop having different expectations for each group of students and see them all as capable of learning at high levels.

What are some practical strategies for building a school culture that believes all students can succeed? Do more than just say you believe all students can succeed. Commit to addressing actions and statements that are not in alignment with this belief. It is critical that individuals in the system or school feel comfortable addressing behaviors that are not in alignment. This takes courage, and courage is contagious. Unfortunately, so is negativity and lack of belief, so it is critical that our energy is focused on living our beliefs versus finding fault in factors we cannot control. It is very easy to say that all students can succeed, but to truly live it is not always easy.

EXPERT

& QA

Beth Pandolpho, author

Why should administrators and teachers of secondary classrooms read I’m Listening? I’m Listening offers strategies for teachers to develop strong relationships with students and create a classroom community in which students feel safe and valued. It provides specific standards-based ideas and instructional activities grounded in the philosophy of social-emotional learning (SEL) that teachers across the disciplines can use to promote literacy development.

What makes this book unique? I’m Listening is both practical and uplifting. Stories and anecdotes from life, literature, and classrooms illuminate how the development of literacy skills is fostered when relationships and belonging are integrated into classroom culture and lesson design. Teachers and students lend their voices to this book, not only to inspire, but also to remind us of the powerful connection between relationships and learning.

What are some strategies from the book that teachers can use in their classrooms tomorrow? The resource provides many cross-disciplinary strategies designed for immediate use across grade levels. For example, the book includes targeted questions educators can ask to help students deepen their comprehension, discover how stories reveal truth, and transfer these understandings to their own lives. In addition, there are prompts offered to help students identify archetypal patterns as well as methods for sparking reflection and discussion.

What inspires your work both as a teacher and an author? I am continually inspired by other people’s stories. I think that learning about others expands and transforms us, and it enables us to envision possibilities beyond our own experience. I am interested to learn how we can harness the power of social connectedness to impact learning and overall happiness in the lives of students as well as each other. To me, the path to real improvement in education is listening—to the research, our colleagues, our students, and ourselves.

EXPERT

& QA

Lauren Porosoff, author

Jonathan Weinstein, author

What do you mean by two-for-one teaching? Our book isn’t a social-emotional learning (SEL) program or curriculum. It’s an approach to instructional design that embeds social-emotional learning into every stage of an academic unit (that’s the “two-for-one” part). The book contains 30 protocols, rooted in evidence-based psychological science and progressive pedagogy, that actively teach social-emotional and academic skills (that’s the “teaching” part). Unlike most social-emotional learning programs, our approach focuses on helping students discover and develop their own values, and connect their assignments and interactions to those values, so that school becomes a source of meaning and vitality in their lives.

Why should educators consider this approach in their everyday practice? For any given academic goal, teachers can choose from a wide variety of learning tasks that will help students achieve that outcome. Why not choose learning tasks that achieve the desired academic outcomes and also help students clarify and commit to the values they want to bring to their learning, their work, and their relationships?

What does values work look like in the classroom? The protocols in this book leverage practices that teachers already use. If you can lead a turn-and-talk, you can lead Collaborative Conversations. If your class can do KWL, they can do the Represent & Respond protocol. Some protocols might include new ideas for instruction, but all of them turn academic learning into a context for students to explore their own values, choose valuesconsistent behaviors, and assess the impacts of those choices.

How will this book help educators in a practical way? Each of this book’s protocols includes a preparation checklist, a step-by-step description of what to do, ways to boost students’ commitment to their values, and ideas for how to use the protocol repeatedly, so it becomes a learning routine. These routines orient students to where they are in a unit, engage them in meaningful learning, and empower them to make their work meaningful for themselves.

EXPERT

& QA

Matt Townsley, author

Nathan L. Wear, author

What is the focus of Making Grades Matter? A number of excellent books exist suggesting why educators should change their grading practices, with several suggesting how it can be done in K−12 schools. Our book fills an important gap, providing a practical guide for middle and high school educators that makes explicit connections between the work of a PLC and implementing standards-based grading (SBG). PLC Connection sections are embedded throughout the book to give teams of teachers and administrators practical steps to collaboratively implement SBG.

Why is implementing a standards-based grading system important? Traditional grading practices have been used for over one hundred years, and to date, there have been no meaningful research reports to support it. Rather than using points and percentages, learning can more transparently be communicated when disaggregated by content standard using a Likert scale. When students see their relative strengths and weaknesses in the grade book, they can take more ownership of their learning. Similarly, teachers using SBG report more focused instruction, which will lead to increases in achievement.

What are some common challenges of implementing standards-based grading at the secondary level? While our book documents a number of standards-based grading implementation pitfalls for secondary teachers to avoid, one overarching question stands out: “How do I get started as a teacher?” Teachers need guidance scaffolding their implementation of standards-based grading rather than merely believing they are “doing it” or “not doing it.” Because we believe learning in secondary classrooms is fluid, not binary, our book helps teachers see their standards-based grading implementation along a continuum.

How does Making Grades Matter address these challenges? We suggest criteria in each chapter for implementing three standards-based grading principles: communicating current levels of learning, repurposing homework as ungraded practice, and providing students multiple opportunities to demonstrate their learning. The criteria included in each end-of-chapter continuua help individual teachers and collaborative teams create an action plan to develop steps for future improvement. In addition, PLC Connection sections are embedded in each chapter to give teams of teachers and administrators practical steps to collaboratively implement SBG principles.
