o you remember the times when Marbella was small, intimate and the private domain of local residents and international jet-set visitors? Probably not, for it was a while ago. Don’t worry, the same loss of virginal authenticity and exclusivity is shared by other beauty spots across the globe, which have long since lost the fight against mass-tourism and largescale development. This makes it all the more exciting to discover an untouched natural paradise, not

in some distant and exotic land, but close to Europe’s summer playgrounds. The name of this virginal coastline backed by wooded groves and little country villages is Comporta, Portugal’s best-kept secret. Though there is a village at its heart, the name and concept of Comporta encompasses a natural and rural zone of some 150km2. The pristine shoreline is an extension of the equally untouched Alentejo coast, which extends north of


the Algarve for over 100 kilometres, much of it part of a protected national park. This almost vertical northward succession of bays, coves, long sandy beaches and pine forests meets the estuary of the Sado River just beyond the old fishing village of Comporta, a quaint settlement of 1,500 souls surrounded by nature and endless views.

PURE NATURE There are no high-rise buildings here, no hotels or property developments. Comporta is a shabby chic village in an idyllic setting surrounded by the sights and sounds of the ocean, pine forest and dunes. Just to the north, the wetlands of the Sado estuary are also part of a natural reserve. It’s sandbanks and natural water canals glisten in the sunlight, a region rich in wildlife and aquatic birds. From Comporta, a long sand bank of beaches and dunes stretches out to the city of Setubal in the

north, touching the point where the estuary meets the Atlantic Ocean. The historic city offers services, sites and famous seafood, but beyond it lies the Costa de Arrabida, a very different but equally beautiful shoreline where cliffs plunge into aquamarine waters. Lisbon is some 45 minutes away, and this is where most of Comporta’s high society visitors have traditionally come from. It has been a secret paradise for a lucky few and therefore protected from mass-development thanks to the fact that

most of the land here belonged to the Espirito Santo family, prominent Portuguese bankers whose Banco Espirito Santo fell onto hard times during the financial crisis. This, in turn, has led to the opening up of Comporta, where zonal planning is however extremely strict. The intention is to allow development, but control it by excluding high-rise structures or clustering of buildings. A few small, ultraexclusive boutique hotels will be permitted, but no major road building or big complexes.

For many who are drawn to it now, this is exactly how they would like to keep it, for in a world of overdevelopment and spoiled former paradises, Comporta offers a natural utopia with simple, authentic pleasures that is a rarity these days. At one hour from Lisbon’s international airport, it is a gem that is free of heavy flows of traffic, crowded beaches and noisy throngs of tourists, though even so the village can become a little congested at the height of summer. In a process that

stretches back to the 1950s, the locals must be bemused by all the fuss, but for those not fortunate to grow up in a natural coastal paradise, where pine groves merge into dunes, which bend into beaches, where the ocean and sky open up before you, this is more special than ever. Nature, space, big skies, simple but delicious seafood, a diversity of natural scenery, and the coming together of a gentrified class of visitor give Comporta an air that is hard to find in Europe. The sea on our doorstep makes up a minnow-sized 1% of the world’s oceans but it’s a big fish in the blue economy, netting 20% of the fiscal catch. But the Med is in deep trouble. A ‘blue goldrush’ of commercial exploitation over decades and six months of coronavirus have created a perfect storm, wreaking havoc on its natural assets and setting the marine economies of 22 surrounding countries on a course for the rocks. In a global SOS to mark World Ocean Day this summer, the World Wildlife Fund unveiled the blueprint for a ‘Blue Recovery’ – one that could deliver healthier ecosystems and economies IF we can increase Marine Protected Areas to 30% by 2030. The Med’s not even a third of the way yet and the clock is ticking. Belinda Beckett reports.

MARINE MIRACLES A short RIB ride from the packed summer beaches of L’Estartit, seven rocky islets rise up above a scuba paradise that has transformed the blue economy of villages along the Costa Brava. Divers and underwater film makers seek out the Illes Medes for their cavedwelling giant grouper. Thanks to a 75-metre cordon of protection thrown around the islands since 1983, which allows limited, well-regulated tourism, biodiversity has returned. This tiny marine miracle is one of 1,200 Marine Protected Areas in the Med. Managed by the countries in whose territorial waters they fall, they offer six levels of protection. They can be

entirely no-fish zones or they can be multi-use, helping to protect ecosystems while supporting local marine industries. The Pelagos Sanctuary allows commercial ships to pass through providing they’re fitted with a system to share sightings of marine mammals so that other vessels can plot routes to avoid them. Running the coasts of Italy, Monaco and France, Pelagos is half the size of all the Med’s MPAs put together. Despite a commitment to protect 10% of their waters by 2020, most countries have ‘blatantly underperformed’, says the WWF. The majority of MPAs still only exist on paper, leaving just 1.27% of waters fully protected – fathoms

The Med trawls in €396 billion a year, counting coastal tourism – equal to half the EU’s post-Covid Recovery Fun. But with too many marine enterprises panning for gold in the same pond, its bounty will run dry without a change of mindset. Belinda Beckett checks out the prospects.

Over the last 50 years, the Mediterranean has lost one third of its fish and sea grass meadows, 40% of its marine mammals and all but 400 of its monk seals, considered pests by fishermen as they tear nets and steal catches. Its temperature is warming 20% faster than the rest of the planet and the amount of plastic we dump into it annually is equivalent to tossing 33,800 plastic bottles overboard every minute. “The slowdown in maritime activities since the pandemic has confirmed that if we ease the pressure on the natural environment, fish stocks and marine habitats may rebuild quickly enough to sustain our socio-economic relaunch,” says Giuseppe Di Carlo, Director of the WWF Mediterranean Marine Initiative. “We need courageous changes if we want to give our young generations the chance to live and work in the Mediterranean of the future.”

CRUISE BLUES The Med is the world’s second favourite cruise destination after the Caribbean. Think 30 million cruise passengers a year flushing waste and producing four kilos of rubbish a day each – not always ecologically disposed of. In a Friends of the Earth Survey only Disney Cruise Lines scored an overall ‘A’ for sewage treatment, water quality, air pollution reduction and transparency. Ships’ anchors tear up sea beds, their propellers scythe through marine mammal populations and their passengers descend in hoards on one place for a few hours like a plague of locusts. Mega cruise ships were still docking in

Venice this year, despite calls to ban them. Covid has sunk this year’s cruise market but specific routes, anchorage zones and tourist limits in sensitive areas is the way forward when the tide turns. MERCHANT MARAUDERS Over 15% of global shipping passes through the Med and traffic is forecast to swell by 4% a year over the next decade, along with a corresponding increase in oil, chemical and noise pollution. Although most motor yachts are under 7.5m, many are still fitted with high-emission twostroke engines. But more than 50% of the world’s superyachts also spend eight out of 12 months of the year in the Med, putting additional stress on ecosystems from habitat destruction and pollution. Billionaire Roman Abramovich’s yacht Eclipse is a whopping 162.5m, bow to stern.

FURTIVE FISHING Around nine million Europeans are licensed to fish for pleasure. Many more cast their lines under the radar. But the real can of worms is not so much the number of recreational anglers as where and what they fish. Vulnerable species poached from MPAs account for half their catch. Threatened grouper, scorpion fish and bluefin tuna are highly prized and 53% of Mediterranean shark species are on the brink of extinction. The use of exotic species as bait, along with lost lines and hooks, pose other threats to marine fauna. Cabo de Gata Nijar in Almeria is a shining example of good MPA management. Recreational fishers are required to report captures via a mobile app, along with where and when they were made.

ENDANGERED SPECIES They’re the small fry of the ocean but family fisheries make up 80% of the 60,000-strong Mediterranean fleet. Fishing is woven into the soul of the region, providing a livelihood for families over generations. However decades of overfishing has put 80% of stocks on the overexploited list and 10,000 small scale fisheries have hauled in their nets for good in the last decade. By-catch caught in their nets also puts vulnerable species at risk, particularly sharks, rays, skate and turtles, while birds, dolphins and whales become entangled in longlines floating on the surface and drown. The good news is that fish revenues come in two to four times higher when there’s a Marine Protected Area nearby, regenerating habitat and allowing stocks to recover – a lifeline for endangered fisheries.

Fish farms are proliferating

AQUACULTURE INVASION Half of the Mediterranean seafood we eat comes from fish farms and more is on the way. If you’re looking for wild-caught lubina or dorada, dream on! Aquaculture is an excellent idea for the most over-fished sea on the planet but it has its downsides: pollution, disease, seafloor damage, the spread of alien species and competition for clean, shallow water with MPAs. Shellfish farming in Catalunya’s Ebro Delta has

introduced the invasive zebra mussel to this important wetland. Spain is one of the Med’s big four fish farming nations – numero uno for mussels and bluefin tuna. But a commercial shift up the food chain from herbivores like grey mullet to predatory species like sea bass and gilt-head bream is aquaculture’s biggest negative. These fish eat other fish and the wild stocks used for fish meal are already at their sustainable limit.

ROLLING IN THE DEEP More people have flown into space than explored the deep ocean. Belinda Beckett dives into its multi-layered ecosystems to discover its darkest mysteries.

THE TWILIGHT ZONE DEPTH: 200M-1KM The deep ocean starts here, in murky depths that have inspired countless scifi thrillers. Sunlight and colours start to fade and fish grow huge bug eyes to see their way. Others use bioluminescence to make their own light, flashing it on and off like a torch to confuse predators, attract prey and lure potential mates. Plankton blooms turn the sea into an eery light show of bioluminescent blues and greens.

THE MIDNIGHT ZONE DEPTH: 1-4KM Too dark for plants to photosynthesise, marine creatures have to compensate for food shortages. They move more slowly to conserve energy and adopt transparent, red or black colours which act like a cloak of invisibility in the darkness. Disguised from predators, they can grow to enormous size – two metre giant squid and shrimp the size of a human hand. Many thrive around hydrothermal vents, converting the mineral magma erupting from the sea floor into energy through their skin. Although the temperature is close to freezing down here, these undersea hot springs can raise it to a scalding 400C.

THE ABYSSAL ZONE DEPTH: 4-6KM Only the hardiest creatures can be found at these crushing depths, where the water pressure is equal to the weight of 48 jumbo jets. Life at this level can survive because it’s made of jelly and cartilage rather than brittle bone, and lacks air sacs that can be crushed. The flexibility also helps with digesting larger prey. Not that there’s much to eat down here except for marine snow, the detritus from dead fish and decaying plants that drift down to the seafloor like manna from heaven.

THE MARIANA TRENCH DEPTH: 11 KM You’ve reached rock bottom. This vast underwater valley in the Pacific off Japan is two kilometres deeper than Mount Everest is tall. Found in the deepest Hadal Zone, only a handful of humans have ever seen it, among them Titanic film director James Cameron who took part in one of only four manned descents in 2012. Regrettably, even at these depths, the last man down found plastic and sweet wrappers, while traces of carbon from nuclear bomb testing have been detected in the few invertebrates that can survive here. e

This spiny sea toad inhabits the Midnight Zone and it’s no amphibian. A relative of the deep-sea angler fish and just as ugly, it can swim upright, walk along the seabed on its fins or freeze to catch its dinner. Resembling the Hogwarts Sorting Hat in Harry Potter, Psychropotes is a species of sea cucumber found in the deepest oceans. This slithering bottom feeder has a sail-like appendage used for swimming during its larval stage which flops over in adulthood like a witch’s hat.

The Casper octopus is a dead ringer for the cute cartoon ghost. Discovered in the Abyssal Zone in 2012, the life cycle of the female will spook you. She wraps her tentacles tenderly around her eggs until they hatch, which can take several years, slowly starving to death

OLD TOWN MÁLAGA There is nothing as exciting as an escapade – a spontaneous trip to a place of one’s desire. Whether visiting for the first time, or wanting to see a place again with fresh eyes, an escapade, like a good laugh, must surely prolong our life. Defined as an act involving excitement, daring or adventure, the concept in itself is so tempting, that I don’t understand why people don’t do it more often. WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY KARETHE LINAAE

T

his year, my husband and I decided to get ‘serious’ about our escapades. We agreed to put aside one day a week for unplanned adventures (not that we really need to get away from our life in Ronda). Friday is our chosen day to run away. We hit the road first thing, travelling by car, bus, train, or on foot, whatever we choose. Any location within a couple of hours' range is on our radar, and might be added to our ever-growing list of potential run-away destinations. It feels a bit naughty or even illicit, taking off for the sole purpose of our own enjoyment. And I have to admit it. I look forward to our Friday outings like a child looks forward to a birthday party. There are always unknown surprises when

escaping, especially if one goes without too many set plans or preconceived expectations. WHY MÁLAGA? This Friday, we decided to explore some hidden alleys and forgotten corners of the old quarter of Málaga. Though we have been in the city plenty of times, it is still one of our favourite urban jaunts. Often ignored by tourists in favour of the smaller beach towns on the Costa del Sol, Málaga is well worth a day of explorative free-style strolling. Plus, being the museum capital of the Spanish south, there are always fabulous art exhibits with a wide selection of works and styles.

However, this time around, we intend to stay off the beaten track. After all, we are here as escapees, about to enjoy the city’s vicarious pleasures of yet to be known kinds. For us who live in a quintessential big mountain village, an occasional city spree is a healthy diversion. Málaga isn’t the metropolitan centre of the universe, but with near 600,000 people, it offers us a much-needed urban fix. The city is just the right size to get lost in and to find one’s way again. It has pretty much the right amount of pollution, city dust, shopping variety, ethnic diversity and population density to tempt us by its urban splendour, while reminding us how lucky we are not to partake in its daily traffic jams. Málaga is only 1.5 hours drive from Ronda, but we decide to leave the car and take a bus instead. Using public transport adds an

additional dimension of freedom to our escape, allowing us to enjoy the journey without thoughts of speed traps or parking fines. Getting chauffeured to our destination, and for a modest fee at that, we can be as reckless as we want to, neither of us being the designated driver. Should we loiter about the streets too long, we can always grab a later bus, jump on a train, or find a place to spend the night. Or maybe we just travel on? One doesn’t want to limit one's options too much, does one, or it would not be a true escapade? BLOOMS ABOUND After having a shamefully cheap breakfast in a place that boasts about serving eight types of café con leche, all in the same type of glass with varying degrees of milk and espresso, we are ready to roll. Our first stop is a completely unassuming park,

which meanders along one of the main traffic arteries leading into the downtown area. One is guaranteed never to meet tourists here, as who, other than I, will insist on walking blocks on end just to see trees. But, it is worth taking this quick detour, as these particular trees are a sight to behold. While they have trunks covered in cone-shaped lethal spikes, their crown is a delicate filigree of pink blooms. Málaga’s flora is something that always impresses me, being so

very different from what one will find merely an hour inland. Wherever you go, there are planters with crimson hibiscus flowers. Even the smallest balconies seem to manage to squeeze in half a dozen pots of geraniums or a trailing bougainvillaea, and the city’s avenues are lined with rows of tall, slender palms. One of my favourite squares here is Plaza de la Merced. You might have passed it on your way to visit the house where Picasso was born,

another of the town’s many museums. The neighbourhood is admittedly becoming a bit worn around the edges. The garbage is not emptied as often as it could be and the spray paint artists work faster than the town’s anti-graffiti squad. However, this raunchiness cannot outweigh the almost childlike joy I feel standing in the middle of the square when the jacaranda trees are in bloom and the plaza becomes awash with purple flowers.

Málaga market, looking towards the old town

POPSICLE COLOURED WALLS Speaking as a designer, the colours of Málaga are one of the city’s true inspirations. Whereas Ronda is one of Andalucía’s Pueblos Blancos or White Villages and therefore stays within a safe all-white colourtheme, Málaga’s architecture is a lively contrast. The beautiful lowrise edifices in the old town can have the most surprising colour combinations. While most remain within the family of warm earth tones, other buildings may combine bold egg yolk yellow with bright Malagueño wine

emerald green or bright pink. I stop and admire one of these 19-century classics with semicurved walls. This one is facing a smaller plaza. It has six stories of flats, each with a French balcony embellished by art nouveau ironwork. The walls are sand dune coloured, with cool khaki green detailing and cream bisque shutters. It is a combination I would have never thought up. Seen apart, they could almost appear clashing, yet when combined, they look nothing short of spectacular, particularly when augmented by the soft rays of a late afternoon sun. I walk on in awe, admiring the playful palettes of aubergine, champagne and over-ripe nectarine. Almost enough to make you hungry… Málaga market


TENTENPIÉ There is never a wrong time to stop for a tentenpíe, which is the Spanish slang for an appetiser or titbit to hold one off until the next real meal. Often, we stop in Málaga’s lovely old public market for this purpose, but this time we want to escape the line-ups. Possibly the best place to enjoy a drink and a couple of appies is in one of the city’s historical almacenes (warehouses). Nowadays, these traditional food

vendors are more like a bar combined with a traditional deli. Their escaparates or shop windows, like the shelves inside, are filled with a tempting array of local wines, cheeses, meats, canned seafood, and other malagueñas specialties. It is no better place to meet the locals while getting a taste of real Málaga. We decide to plop ourselves down outside one of the almacenes, enjoying a break, while sipping a frosty glass of local Fino and some wedges of to-diefor oveja (sheep milk) cheese. Hoards of tourists will come home from their Spanish holiday with an abanico (fan) that hardly opens, castanets that will never be used, or an imitation flamenco apron Made in PRC, but how many will drop by one of these delightfully authentic delis and buy some smoked, ground Spanish red pepper to bring home instead?

RIBBONS, BOWLERS AND CHOKERS In between the dime a dozen chain stores selling cheap shoes and cell phone covers, Málaga still has a few of its traditional family run shops. Some are hidden away in secret alleys, while others can be found squeezed between Italian lingerie emporiums and international frozen yoghurt outlets. Most have discretely faded signs and a dusty window display. But this is where you really can do some authentic shopping. Forget about the Chinese dollarstores that have everything – all poorly made. These stores are the mom and pop kind with over-thecounter service, specialising in one type of item. Their goods are of decent quality and might even be Hecho en España (Made in Spain). One of my favourite examples of these is the traditional Spanish Mercería or Haberdashery. Here, the local housewives will line up to buy 20cm of three different kinds of ribbon. The process of purchase is painstakingly slow since everything has to be brought out from the back room, but it is ever so interesting to observe the tassel-purchasing process from a socio-anthropological point of view. Next are the traditional ferreterías (hardware stores). To be sure that

your chosen location is an authentic one, the wall behind the counter needs to be lined with small drawers. These might contain everything from doorknobs and powdered chemicals, to curious looking rodent-traps and poisons outlawed in 1965. Equally interesting are the old stores that sell church supplies and religious paraphernalia. This is where you go if, like me, you are tempted to buy one of those silver incense burners suspended from chains that they whiff about during Catholic mass. As for my husband, he loves the small shops that remind him of visiting his family in Bilbao as a boy. We are talking way back in the last millennium, when Franco was the autocratic ruler. First, there are the little-old-lady owned perfume shops that sell weird brands of splash-on colognes that nobody uses anymore.

Then, there are the traditional linen stores, looking as far from Zara Home as you can imagine. These will usually have a crowded window display with piles of hideous synthetic blankets, practical polysomething tablecloths and a selection of could be handmade doilies and baby bibs. Though we have never bought anything in the latter type of store, they are always cool to peak into. The prices are also a hoot, as I once noted childrens' cotton undershirts for €1,70 and baby shoes for

a whooping €2,30. Like most large Spanish cities, Málaga also has a couple of the traditional hat stores, where they will still measure your head and display hats on wooden cranium-shaped domes. The owners of these businesses tend to be far beyond retirement age, so it is wise not to wait too long to visit these premises, or they might have closed down. Here is where you will find a Fedora, a genuine Panama hat, or (not by the store owner’s intention) brand new, yet now vintage hats for any festive occasion.

I also enjoy visiting a Flamenco store. I am not speaking about the souvenir shops that sell poor ruffled imitation dresses. This is the real thing, where they design and sew the colourful flamenco gowns from scratch and where you can find a genuine Manton or Manila shawl for several hundred euros. I love their ever so stylish Flamenco leather shoes, though I cannot for the life of me dance the Sevillana. But their outrageously huge loped Flamenco earrings are another matter...

REFUELLING Being quite shopped out, though we hardly have bought anything, it is time for some grub, of which Málaga has got aplenty. The old town is usually crawling with tourists, but you can still find decent restaurants with mostly local clientele, merely a couple of blocks off the main drag. Wherever you go, it is advisable to avoid places that hand you a voucher as you pass by, as well as those who offer a €10 daily plasticised menu written in seven languages with pictures of their sad excuse for a paella and

canned rabo de toro. Though we usually go for ethnic food when in the big city, this time we decide on a new organic place. Located on a corner in a residential street, we appear to be the only out-oftowners. I am certainly the only non-Latina. From our street-side table, we are able to do some quality people watching, as the real malagueños – fashionable, traditional, risqué or retro punk – go about their daily lives. During another escapade here, we got to watch aspiring ‘actors’ and ‘actresses’ enter the casting session for what appeared to be a not completely legit adult movie. This time around, we are just as lucky, catching a band practice in a building across the street. Though we do not see the musicians, we get a free Spanish guitar concert, and this, just a handful blocks from Calle Larios, Málaga’s busiest walking mall.

LOOK UP, LOOK DOWN I should mention that this very same pedestrian-only avenue, which crosses the Casco Histórico, has the most beautiful rust coloured marble paving (for those who manage to tear their eyes away from the wallto-wall shopping bonanza). Each piece of marble is so remarkable that I would take any of them home and put it as art on the wall. The stone looks particularly stunning when it has been recently polished, around Semana Santa and before Christmas. They also look great after a downpour, though water makes the stone lethally slippery, so consider yourself forewarned. Actually, this is yet another great thing about escaping to a place where we usually do not trot daily. We tend to look up more, or down as in the case of the pavement. At home, walking the same old streets, I often forget to see what really surrounds us. During an escapade, on the other hand, my head continually swivels, enjoying both horizontal and vertical splendours. Escaping

allows one to see life from a slightly different angle, inspiring one to observe and sense more intensely, even as one returns to familiar surroundings. The evening has come upon us. Though there is still much urban exploring to be done, such as enjoying the sunset from Málaga’s Cathedral roof or watching a foreign movie in its original language. But we feel more than content. Filled with new sights, sounds and tastes, we wander back to the bus station, where the same driver chauffeurs us home. As I watch the beautiful sculptural landscape of Andalucía flying by, I know that we will escape again a Friday or two from now. If art and design are two of life’s great passions for you, then pencil in two upcoming fairs: Marbella Design and Art Marbella, to be held simultaneously at the Palacio de Ferias y Congresos from September 24 to October 3. These are, hands down, Marbella’s two most prestigious art and design events, though in the past, each was held on a different date. It makes sense to hold both simultaneously, however, since art is such an integral part of interior design in highend homes.

THE THIRD EDITION OF MARBELLA DESIGN BETTER THAN EVER This is the third year that art collector and entrepreneur, Alejandro Zaia, will be bringing Marbella Design to our shores. If you have attended past events, then you know they are ‘the bomb’ in terms of the talent they bring (past attendees include high flyers from the design, advertising, and tourism sectors – including Architect, Teresa Sapey; Mini designer Frank Stephenson, and advertising whiz kid, Borja Borrero). Of course, the visual splendor of the art and design on view is worthy of a visit in itself. The common thread that runs through both fairs is the ‘design for life’ concept – the idea that great design enhances life and, in some cases, it can actually last a lifetime (thereby supporting the idea of sustainability).

Zaia tells me that despite the current health crisis, “this year will have a larger number of participants than last year. Around 150 brands and interior designers have confirmed their attendance, which represents a 35 per cent increase in attendance.” Indeed, the construction industry has continued its activity during the crisis, making the demand for design and art as strong as ever. “We have worked alongside the Palacio de Ferias to ensure that all safety and preventive measures recommended by the government are followed to the letter.”

TALENT ON SHOW

Marbella Design has always had various facets to it and it will continue in a similar style this year. Each exhibitor will have dedicated spaces with a height of over three metres. This will allow them to display their respective concepts and show off cutting edge materials, new efforts in the area of sustainable design, and a plethora of wall and floor designs. Last year, for instance, some of the most talkedabout spaces included the bathroom by Erico Navazo for Villeroy & Boch (featuring nature-inspired wall prints and backdrops, a standing bath, and gorgeous relaxation spaces)

MCLAREN ELVA SPORTS ROADSTER One thing’s for sure about the upcoming McLaren Elva. It won’t be your first choice to take your partner and the family dog on a road trip. It’s unashamedly a two-seater roadster offering pure driving fun and excitement by the bushel but little else by way of creature comforts. Don’t even ask about any kind of roof. There’s no windscreen whatever and cargo space amounts to almost nothing, though there is space under a rear tonneau for two helmets. he Elva name goes back to a British sports car manufacturer of the 1950s and 1960s whose cars were once modified for racing by the great Bruce McLaren. It’s an interesting nod towards nostalgia that McLaren should revive the Elva name for such an awesome product. The Elva is exceptionally light being, in fact, the lightest road car McLaren has ever built. The chassis is carbon fibre, as is the bodywork. The seats

are carbon fibre too and the brakes are of sintered carbon ceramic. It all adds up to a highly exotic car in every respect. The missing windscreen is covered by aerodynamic body design elements that direct air over the cockpit aided by a deflector at the front of the bonnet that rises automatically. A fixed windscreen is available as an option, but that would seem to work against the real point of this car. As might be expected, this McLaren boasts some mightily

impressive performance figures. Behind this pace is a 4.0-litre twinturbo V-8 that develops 804-horsepower. It drives the rear wheels via a 7-speed dual clutch automatic. The zero to 100 km/h figure of under three seconds should give the driver an experience much like piloting a Formula One car at the Monaco Grand Prix. The car will top 200 km/h in 6.7-seconds but no top speed is given by McLaren. It should certainly be beyond 300 km/h. McLaren describes the car as ‘ferociously fast’ and nobody’s going to argue with that. Although performance is the Elva’s first priority,

the car doesn’t entirely lack comfort and convenience features for the driver and passenger. A centrally mounted high-resolution 8-inch touchscreen acts as a hub for all vehicle functions, including satellite navigation. The screen is mounted on a carbon fibre arm and tilted towards the driver. As far as cockpit trim goes, McLaren offers a broad portfolio of interior materials for buyers to choose from, including full aniline leather specially developed to meet the requirements of an open cockpit car. There’s no

audio system as standard since many buyers will reason that there’s little point in a car like this. For customers who can’t live without a sound system, McLaren will throw in a bespoke stereo at no extra cost. There’s no point in trying to justify what many people would regard as an outrageous roadster. For those with the means, it’s vast


amounts of fun with a Formula One driving experience thrown in. Even McLaren wouldn’t describe it as a grand touring car but few owners would make it their sole set of wheels. It’s a machine that functions superbly in good weather and it’s guaranteed to upstage all those mundane Ferraris and Lamborghinis. For many, that’s what makes it worth the money. e

Sometimes you don’t know exactly why you love a product, you just do! Equally, there are well-known brands that have featured in favourite films that have drenched your psyche with admiration. As a result, you have become a passionate supporter. WORDS MARK WILKINS PHOTOGRAPHY SHUTTERSTOCK

ne such product is Harley Davidson Motorcycles. I am readily prepared to admit that big motorbikes scare the bejeezus out of me. I had a Vespa for several years in London. While two-wheeled aficionados will scoff, it was very easy to enjoy. Big motorbikes are heavy, and I perceive them to be unwieldy and, above all, dangerous. Several friends, owners of Ducati, Indian and Triumph, have waxed about the open road

on their two-wheeled companion; I am yet to be convinced. Harleys, for me, are altogether different. They sound wonderful, a throaty growl that can be heard several streets away. They are bulbous, resplendent in chrome or matt black with a wide-butt sprung leather saddle that looks thoroughly inviting. HARLEY-DAVIDSON EARLY YEARS Harley-Davidson, Inc. was founded in Milwaukee (Wisconsin) in 1903 by

a team of four including William S. Harley, and his childhood friend, Arthur Davidson. They worked together on a design for a simple engine that would sit inside a bicycle frame. Initially, it was not a great success and required pedalling! A later and much bigger version proved more successful and an early prototype – the very first HarleyDavidson – was raced in September 1904, at Milwaukee’s State Fair Park.

JUNEAU AVENUE – HOME TO HARLEY-DAVIDSON FOR MORE THAN A CENTURY In 1906, Harley-Davidson built their first factory making an initial 50 cycles a year. Production was expanded to 150 per year by 1907. The factory was on Juneau Avenue (Milwaukee) and is still the location of HarleyDavidson’s corporate headquarters. The V-Twin engine – with a 45-degree angle between the cylinders – was the next major development in 1909 and by 1913 the majority of Harley-Davidsons were V-Twins. 1912 heralded the arrival of the patented, and very recognisable, adjustable sprung seat which was used until 1958. 1917 saw the US military purchasing over 20,000 motorcycles. They survived the Great Depression by controlling expansion and by the late 1930s, Harley-Davidson was again producing motorcycles for the US Army. They delivered more than 90,000 for military use.

Off London’s King’s Road, at the Wandsworth Bridge Road end, is a showroom named Warrs. It is home to the oldest Harley-Davidson dealership in Europe, founded in 1924 by Captain Frederick James Warr, the same year they became an official HarleyDavidson outlet. The business is still run by the Warr Family, with John Warr as MD. In 1941 the FL was introduced to the HarleyDavidson model line with its Knucklehead OHV engine that was changed to the Panhead engine in 1948 with aluminum cylinder heads and improved cooling.

THE POST WAR DECLINE In 1949, the FL – being renamed the Hydra Glide in 1950 – was given a new front suspension featuring distinctive hydraulically damped telescopic forks. The third and final change given to the basic FL model occurred in 1965 when Harley-Davidson engines were equipped with electric starters, an innovation that resulted in a new model name of the Electra Glide. Post War the company struggled and in 1969, American Machine and Foundry (AMF) bought Harley-Davidson, rationalised production and reduced the


workforce. Sadly this resulted in a reduction in quality. Additionally, their products failed to compete with the cheaper Japanese imports. HARLEY-DAVIDSON’S REBIRTH In 1981, AMF sold the company to a group of investors led by Vaughn Beals and Willie G. Davidson, a relative of the founders. They conscientiously built models that exploited the brand’s retro appeal. The iconic Softail series of motorcycles was introduced in 1984 and in 1990 this was joined by the Fat Boy. In doing this, they regained their preeminence in the heavyweight market. In 1994 the company

unsuccessfully sought trade-mark protection for the distinctive sound made by a V-Twin engine. In 2008, a 12,000m2 HarleyDavidson Museum opened in the Menomonee Valley which houses the company’s heritage collection. HARLEY OWNER’S GROUP It is said that the experience of driving a Harley-Davidson, with its telltale rumble, is more than merely riding a powerful motorcycle. Many commute on their preferred two-wheels and spend their evenings and weekends pursuing their passion. The Harley Owners Group (or HOG) is a community-orientated

club operated by HarleyDavidson. It has a worldwide membership in excess of one million and its merchandising offer gives those who are not yet owners the chance to indulge in branded leather jackets, Tshirts and bandanas. Founded in 1983, it is said that HOG members spend around 30% more than non-member owners on events and merchandising. To become a member of HOG there is, as you’d expect, one rule. You must be an owner of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. There are valuable membership benefits including discounted insurance. Once you are a HOG member you can

join a local Chapter that has a link to the local Harley dealership. The Chapters organise events and may collect dues from members. In 2007 the Marbella HOG Chapter was founded. It now has over a hundred members from eighteen different nationalities. It was the 4th Chapter in Spain. As of 2013, it holds an annual Costa del Sol Rally. HELLS ANGELS Another club with worldwide membership is the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club, many of whose members ride Harleys. The Club was founded in 1948 from the ashes of World War II and now has 500 chapters in 60 countries.

To join, the applicant requires a driving license and a minimum 750cc motorcycle. Following a lengthy and seemingly democratic process, the applicant is described as ‘Patched’ as a full member, which allows them to wear the iconic Hells Angel woven patch. The Hells Angels have been beset by accusations of criminal activities and in 2019 the entire club was banned in the Netherlands.

STARS OF SCREEN No matter what your age is, a Harley will have appeared in one of your favourite movies. These include Peter Fonda’s 1951 Panhead Chopper, ‘Captain America’ in the cult 1969 movie Easy Rider; Bruce Willis’ character Butch’s Chopper in Pulp Fiction; Arnie’s Fat Boy in Terminator 2; Chris Evans’ character, Softail’s Cross Bones in Captain America: The First Avenger and

the 1973Aermaachi HarleyDavidson 350 S in Live and Let Die. This is a combination of very clever product placement, if such a commercial concept had been properly developed by the late 1960s, and the recognition that HarleyDavidson is simply the coolest motorcycle ever made! There is little wonder that hordes of celebrants of 25th Wedding anniversaries, 50th birthdays, or recent divorces, head to the open roads of the US, Route 66 and Highway 101 in particular, to drive a Harley in its homeland. The aim is to relive, albeit temporarily, a sense of visceral freedom that only the combination of wind and petrol fumes in your face and the open road can offer. Giving my above comments, I really prefer to look at and listen to these alluring vehicles, as they have a wonderful aesthetic quality. Sadly for me, however, they are at their very best when ridden by someone else! e

WHY EIZA GONZÁLEZ IS A STAR TO WATCH OUT FOR

Eiza González may be new to international cinematic audiences but in her native Mexico, she has been a huge star since her early teens; the lead in the series Lola: Érase una vez, in which she played the role of Lola, a sassy teen from a humble background who falls madly in love with a real-life ‘Prince Charming’. The show is fun, emotional and a little comical, and despite being quite a light, teen-centric series, it put Eiza’s many talents to the test. It was during her time playing Lola that she began to shine at singing as well. In Mexico and other Latin American countries, young actors are often required to show musical talent, with many holding concerts that are attended by thousands of teens in the summer season.

iza seems to have landed in Hollywood ‘out of nowhere’ and she somehow fit right in. Firstly, her English is amazing; she speaks with an American accent, the product of her education in an Englishspeaking school since her childhood. Her mother,

famous Mexican model (now model agency owner) Glenda Reyna, prepared her well for ‘the big leagues’, ensuring her language skills were up to scratch (Eiza speaks fluent Italian as well). Eiza is close to her mum, and the latter can often be seen

When Eiza graduated from the American School Foundation, her mother encouraged her to study at the prestigious Centro de Educación Artística. Eiza would complete two out of three years of study, since by the time she was 16, she had landed the principal role in Lola: Érase una vez. In 2008, Gloria made another brilliant ‘momager’ move: she sent Eiza to complete an acting course at famous ‘method acting school’, the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. Eiza didn’t move straight to Hollywood, however. She returned to Mexico to record

She completed various TV roles afterwards, appearing in her first English-speaking role in American horror TV series, From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series. Eiza’s big break was undoubtedly in smash teen/young adult hit, Baby Driver, starring the fabulous Ansel Elgort as a getaway driver whose only wish is to escape from a life of

crime. Eiza played the wife of a crime boss – a character she described as a “crook space-cadet woman who has no attachment to reality.” Things have been all uphill for her since then. She has shone in films like Paradise Hills (costarring Emma Roberts) and Fast & Furious: Hobbs and Shaw (with Jason Statham and The Rock). She is appearing in three films in 2002: Bloodshot (with Vin Diesel), Cut Throat City (alongside Ethan Hawke and Wesley Snipes), and Love Spreads

(with newcomers Alia Shawkat and Chanel Cresswell). Next year will be even more exciting; it will see the release of Godzilla vs. Kong, an homage to nostalgic monster flicks that co-stars Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown as well as Woody Allen muse, Rebecca Hall. Eiza may be a big presence on the screen and a top-class singer, but for this writer, the very best thing about her is her infectious personality. If you have seen her TV interviews

then you probably have already perceived how bubbly, empathetic, and fun she is. She is indeed reminiscent of her Disney counterpart, Miley Cyrus, who is always willing to take on a fun challenge, tell an embarrassing true story, or sing or dance at the drop of a hat. Eiza is a show woman through and through and with her preparation, ambition, and work ethic, we have no doubt she is only on the first rung of what will hopefully be a very long ladder. e

Cinemagoers are once again venturing forth to their favourite theatres. The list of releases is a little smaller than in years past but there are always a few gems that are worth leaving Netflix at home for. We suggest the following. COMPILED BY MARISA CUTILLAS

TROUBLE

This is a fun one for kids, directed by Kevin Johnson (The Jungle Book). It tells the tale of Trouble – a pampered pooch who is living the good life in a palatial home with his owner, Sarah (his trainer is none other than Cesar Millan). One day, his beloved owner passes away and he is left alone in the mansion, unaware of her death. Sarah’s greedy family members soon arrive to claim their inheritance and they get rid of Trouble, only to discover that they must bond with him for a specified time if they are to inherit Sarah’s estate. The result is a goose chase aimed at finding the dog and convincing the authorities that they do, indeed, ‘love him’.


THE KING’S MAN

Matthew Vaughn (Kingsman: The Secret Service) directs a talented cast that includes Ralph Fiennes, Gemma Arterton, Rhys Ifans, Tom Hollander, and more in this dramatic film about the origins of the firstever independent intelligence agency. It tells the story of a man who races against time to stop an allegiance of the world’s deadliest tyrants as they gather to plot a war that would wipe out millions of human beings.

A QUIET PLACE PART II

A Quiet Place, written and directed by talented actor John Krasinski, was a mindblowing film which left one completely glued to the screen despite its ostensible simplicity. Krasinski and real life wife Emily Blunt played a couple forced to remain completely silent or risk being destroyed by a monster that sensed the presence of humans via sound. The last film ends rather tragically, with the husband getting mauled to death while the wife and children flee to safety. This film follows the family from that point onwards, as they struggle to live, love, and find joy in a life that is utterly devoid of sound.

TWO OF US

Nina and Madeleine, two retired women, have been secretly in love with each other for decades. Everyone else thinks they are nothing more than neighbours and the ladies are happy to keep their romance under wraps‌ until an unexpected event makes it impossible for them to move freely between their apartments. This film is directed by Filippo Meneghetti (Deux) and stars Barbara Sukowa and Martine Chevallier.

FALLING

Viggo Mortensen’s directorial debut, Falling, received great acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival, where it was first presented. Did you know that Viggo, best known for his role as Strider/Aragorn in Lord of the Rings, is also a talented musician, photographer, painter, and poet? He not only directed, but also penned Falling. The film delves into the fractures and secrets that characterise many modern-day families. Viggo stars as a gay man who lives with his partner and adopted daughter in California. Their peaceful life is put to the test when his

father (a farmer tied to traditional ideas of family) comes to Los Angeles for an indefinite stay and their two worlds collide. Starring alongside Mortensen are Lance Henriksen and Sverrir Gudnason.

With over 70 million books in print worldwide, Harlan Coben has hit the number one spot on the New York Times’ bestseller list 31 times, with gems like The Boy from The Woods, Run Away, Fool Me Once, Tell No One and the Myron Bolitar series. His works have been translated into 43 languages and many have been turned into films and series – including No Second Chance (a Netflix miniseries whose finale broke a 10-year record on the network, as it was viewed by nine million people) and Stay Close (a Hitchcockian mystery that was made into a feature film). This series is the latest in the line-up. It is based on the novel of the same name and it tells the story of Pawel Kopinski – a prosecutor whose sister went missing in the woods near her summer camp 25 years ago. He never quite gets over the loss but when the boy who disappeared with her is suddenly found, he becomes hopeful that she is still alive. As the

episodes progress, the audience becomes privy to more and more family secrets and Pawel is forced to remember many things – including his first love, Lucy, his mother (who abandoned his family),and the secrets that his Russian parents were hiding even from those they loved the most – their children. Pawel must decide which secrets need to be revealed, and which are best kept undercover.

THE STRANGER

Another more recent gem is The Stranger, released in January, 2020. Hannah John-Kamen (of Ant-Man fame) plays a mysterious woman (‘the stranger’) who shares a secret with family man, Adam: his wife, Corinne, faked her pregnancy and he should get a DNA test as soon as possible. When the man’s wife goes missing, a police investigation commences to find out the connection between this event and the stranger. Co-stars include Richard Armitage as Adam, Siobhan Finneran as Detective Sergeant Johanna Griffin, and Dervla Kirwan as Corrine.

Those subscribed to Netflix can catch various Harlan Coben-based series on the platform – including Safe, which stars the magnificent Michael C Hall (from Dexter). When one of his two daughters goes missing, he puts all his energy into finding her, discovering shocking secrets along the way. Starring alongside Hall are Amy James-Kelly as Tom’s elder daughter, Isabelle Allen as his younger daughter, and Marc Warren as Pete – the town doctor and Tom’s best friend.

No, we haven’t got our dates wrong – the original Glastonbury Festival cropped up on a farm in southwest England 50 years ago this month. Locked down by Covid to an online party for its Big 5-0, it’s the perfect excuse to revisit the wildest and (frequently) wettest greenfield gig in the world, writes Belinda Beckett.

SOWING THE SEEDS In 1970 an eccentric Somerset dairy farmer snuck through a hedge to see Led Zeppelin play at a neighbouring festival and decided he could put on a much better one. “I was playing Lola to the cows through a sound system in the

milking parlour when the idea struck,” explains Michael Eavis, an 84-year-old true son of the soil. “I had a better site, facing Glastonbury Tor in the Vale of Avalon – it was all a bit romantic. So I phoned the Kinks and booked them for £500. My favourite band

Now held during five days and nights over June’s summer solstice, tickets for this year’s cancelled gig cost £265 apiece and all 135,000 sold out in 34 minutes! It would have been the 37th edition, counting fallow years to allow the farmland to recover from the aftershock. The record crowd was 300,000 in 1994, including fence jumpers.

MASSIVE APPEAL Sprawling over as many fields as can fit into 500 football grounds, you have to climb the 17-metre Ribbon Tower to appreciate the scale of Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts. Interspersed between a patchwork quilt of tents are 80 stages headlining every genre from jazz, trance and indie pop to RnB and electronica, each with their attendant music bars, food stalls, themed nightclubs and electronic sculptures fashioned from last year’s rubbish. Arcadia’s fire-breathing 50-tonne scaffold spider stole the show for 17 summers. Shangri-La is a postapocalyptic walkthrough ravecum-art-gallery;

Cineramageddon offers drive-in movies in vintage cars; learn to trapeze and take in a comedy show at Theatre & Circus; or follow cryptic coded signposts to The Rabbit Hole, a secret underground Wonderland where Prince Harry and Kate Moss boogied the night away in 2013. If you’re not packing a tent, you can hire a tipi with solar showers and a log-fired yurt sauna a stoner’s throw from your wigwam flap. MYTHOLOGY AND MYSTICISM Glasto takes its cue from the farm’s setting in the kingdom of King Arthur, a

rural idyll steeped in legend and covered in ley lines. Glastonbury Tor inspired the island of Avalon where the sword Excalibur was forged, while the ancient Abbey was once said to house the Holy Grail. Glasto’s Healing Field keeps the spiritual vibe alive with naked yoga, therapeutic gong baths and solstice rituals enacted around a contemporary Stone Circle. It’s a nice little earner for Glastonbury town’s thriving New Age community of crystal healers, tarot readers and chakra aligners. Gardeners too. WORTHY CAUSES Starting in 1981 when it championed the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, the Worthy Farm festival has raised millions for Oxfam, Greenpeace, Water Aid and local charities. A lot of it’s down to the 2,000 volunteer stewards, litter pickers and cleaners who have to muck out 4,000 loos. Glasto is also lot greener than the days when everyone left their rubbish and tents behind. PRINTED ELECTRONICS MAKING LIFE SAFER, SMARTER, AND MORE EFFECTIVE FOR KEY INDUSTRIES

The printed electronics market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 21.5% from 2020 to 2025, according to a Top Markets Report. Print is overtaking everything from health to engineering, with solutions such as printed Magnetic Resonance Imaging Coils ensuring a perfect fit in machinery and significantly reducing costs. What are the top 5 industries in which printed electronics are making their presence felt? WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS PERSONAL HEALTH AND BEAUTY Printed electronics are doing plenty to prevent disease and reduce medical errors, driving down costs and improving product performance while doing so. A fine example of their use in the beauty sector is Estée Lauder’s printed electrophoretic skin patch, which transmits active ingredients that reduce blotching and creasing in skin up to 16 times faster

than manual application can achieve. In the health sector, printed electronics are being used to develop medicated patches, biosensors, and wearables for wellness purposes, as well as self-monitoring of health issues for preventive care. For health and beauty purposes, printed material needs to be lightweight, comfortable, and adaptable to the human body. This is

achieved through the use of metallic inks which, when placed through a screen printer, result in organic polymers that have a lower metal content. THE AUTOMOTIVE SECTOR Print technology is being used in modern vehicles for technologies such as ‘smart interior surfaces’, in which car interiors feature switches, sliders, and electronic controls that are


seamlessly integrated into door panels, instrument panels, and steering wheels. They are also being used for flexible printed heaters, in-mold electronics (in which printed electronics are designed to fit in with traditional components), and presence detection (i.e. to detect the presence of human beings close to the vehicle). THE INTERNET OF THINGS In a study by L Zheng et al, researchers state: “Due to its flexibility, bendability and deformability, flexible large area printed electronics (FLAE) has found a unique position for smart things, and it becomes a coretechnology that bridges the real world things to cloud.” Just a few ways this technology can be used alongside the IoT include intelligent packaging (for instance,

to advise users when items are about to expire), medical wearables (including the use of printed electronic pressure sensors at the bottom of feet to prevent diabetic foot ulcers or of Tshirts that measure your heart rate), and intelligent packaging of medications (which inform the user when they need to be taken). In many ways, printed electronics bridge the gap between the provision of products and services, since they provide continuous feedback throughout a product’s lifetime.

SMART BUILDING Printing can be used to create flat home appliance touch controls, but it can also be used on floors and in walls. Major parts of buildings can be made with materials that have embedded printed sensors and special components that are used for various functions – including the measurement of temperature, building quality, moisture levels, gas levels, and the like. These can be aligned with home automation systems to control and adjust heating and ventilation.

CONSUMER ELECTRONICS 5G promises to bring faster data transfer capabilities to modern consumer electronics and printing will also be making these devices more design-friendly. 3D printing, for instance, can be used to create gorgeous curved or folding displays (think of an iPad you can fold in two). Another application of printed electronics are electrophoretic displays. The latter combine low power consumption and high daylight suitability. Their ideal use is for e-readers and smart price tags. They can also serve as secondary displays for the indication of important notifications and

messages when your gadget’s main display is deactivated. This allows for significant energy savings. The only way is up for printed electronics, which is set to play an important role in everything from preventive health to ßbermodern car interiors. We will also have smarter buildings that rely on real-time information to control our indoor temperature, tell us it is time to ventilate, or warn us if there are dangerous gas readings within our homes or offices. e

office environment, we attended to clients through Zoom, Skype and email, providing design solutions as normal. Although nothing replaces personal contact and selecting materials together, working from a home office works too. We took the opportunity to streamline our processes and improve our service, and we also designed new collection pieces. I believe the confinement made people realise that they are more comfortable with working from home and shopping online than they were aware of, so the trend is here to stay. With this in mind, we had already created a furniture E-shop platform dedicated to the

AALTO furniture collection before Covid-19 struck, and we’ll continue to expand the offer with more items. WHAT SERVICES DOES THE AALTO DESIGN STUDIO PROVIDE? Since Ness Yammine took over the ownership and management of the company in collaboration with myself a year ago, AALTO has created a series of customised interior design services for both residential properties and commercial projects. Many critics pointed out that they were hardly experts on formulations and chemical compositions of makeup when they launched their own lines. Others stated that celebrities, of all people, were fully in line with the transformative effects of makeup and many were quite expert at ‘beating’ their

own face. Why shouldn’t they launch beauty lines if their passion lay therein? In the end, there truly is room for everyone to make a killing, since fan bases vary considerably in age, backgrounds, and tastes and, at this precise moment, squabbling seems to be the last thing that interests any serious beauty fan. Z HAUS LABORATORIES BY LADY GAGA: A small but cool collection featuring lip liners, glosses, eye palettes, shimmery liquid eyeshadows and lash and brow toppers. The selection is high quality, long-lasting and practical in nature. For instance, the Glam Room Palette No. 1: Fame is not exactly something you might expect from Gaga, since it contains mainly neutral shades that can be worn every day. The second palette, called Stupid Love Eyeshadow Palette, contains mainly blue hues, with a few neutral and orange/bronzey shades thrown in for good measure.

Z GOOP BY JUICE BEAUTY BY GWYNETH PALTROW: Her name is much maligned owing to her ability to say the wrong thing at the wrong time, but there is no doubt that this Oscar-award-winning actor is as knowledgeable about beauty as she is about food. She has a small range of organic products that includes a replenishing night cream, enriching face oil, perfecting eye cream, and exfoliating instant facial. These products don’t come cheap (most cost around €100) but at least you know they don’t contain any toxic components.

Z KORA ORGANICS BY MIRANDA KERR: Without a doubt, I recommend this brand, having tried quite a few items – including the Noni Glow Face Oil (a lovely way to seal in serum and other anti-ageing products), the Noni Bright Vitamin C Serum (great for targeting dark spots), and the Turmeric Brightening & Exfoliating Mask (a fantastic shortcut to smooth, glowing skin). My favourite of all their products is the Calming Lavender Mist, which I use after cleansing skin; it is especially wonderful in the summer so keep it in the fridge for a refreshing boost. The mist also comes in Balancing Rose and Energising Citrus. Most products made by Kerr’s company contain a ‘secret ingredient’ called Noni, derived from the noni fruit that is super high in antioxidants.


WHAT CAN ALICIA KEYS BRING TO THE GAME? The details of Alicia Keys’ beauty line are still being kept under wraps, but e.l.f. has announced that it will represent “”a culmination of Keys’ personal skincare journey and her passion for bringing light into the world; this new lifestyle beauty brand will enable Alicia to further explore conversations about inner beauty, wellness and connection.” Moreover, it will be inclusive, authentic, dermatologist-developed, and cruelty-free. It definitely sounds like something exciting and new, reminiscent of ethical companies like Isun Skincare, which respect the connection between the natural and human worlds and which deem sustainability and kindness to be core values.

INFLUENCERS STILL ROCK The world of beauty influencers seems to be far removed from that being delved into by celebrities like Alicia Keys or Gwyneth Paltrow. For one, influencer brands like Jeffree Star, James Charles for Morphe, Manny MUA and the like seem more centred on makeup than skincare. ONE DISEASE, SEVERAL FACES!

Everybody has heard about heart attacks, strokes and clotted leg arteries but people rarely realise they are all pretty much the same thing just affecting different parts of the body. The disease is called atherosclerosis, the thickening and calcification of arterial walls, causing decreased blood flow to wherever the artery is leading. When a heart artery clots up completely, the result is a heart attack; when the same thing happens in the brain artery, we call it a stroke, and when a leg artery is occluded, we get black feet and toes called gangrene.

ther organs can also be affected, like the intestine or the pelvic arteries causing even sexual impotence in certain cases. Sometimes the problem occurs only in the heart, in others just in the legs, but in many patients we do find it in different places at the same time. The good news is, modern technology has made it quite easy to screen for the presence of atherosclerosis and treatment has also seen tremendous progress – if the patient makes it to the doctor in time! The journey starts with a symptom. This is mostly pain in the area where blood flow and oxygen delivery is being decreased: chest pain is the red flag of the coronary artery disease, leg pain is the symptom of leg arteries being occluded, and stomach pain can

be induced by diseased abdominal vessels. Even impotence can be a cause of atherosclerosis of specific pelvic arteries. Cardiovascular centres use high tech equipment to evaluate all the vessels of the body and report the damage: where it is exactly and how bad is it! The Eco-doppler examination is the best known to most of us. Ultrasound waves produce clear pictures of our arteries and the extent of protruding, calcified plaques can be measured accurately, for example in the vessels going to our brain. In addition, the actual blood flow can be analysed and quantified, providing a good picture of the real issue. Angio-CT scans of coronary arteries or body arteries are also very accurate in showing where exactly the problem is to be found. For early detection and

risk stratification doctors use the IMT measurement of the carotid artery (neck artery), which gives a reliable prognosis of the patient's risk for developing significant atherosclerosis in the future. The same applies to the ABI measurement (Ankle Brachial Index of blood pressure) performed on arm and leg arteries. The results of these simple tests help formulate individual risk profiles leading to the optimisation of risk factors derived from our personal lifestyle and our genetic predisposition. As for the risk factors that we can influence ourselves – they are no secret and surely the most published and propagated in the medical and lifestyle literature. There is hardly anyone who is not aware of the danger of smoking, being over-weight and the lack of physical exercise.

Elevated blood pressure, sugar levels (diabetes) and cholesterol levels are medical risk factors screened by doctors regularly because the optimisation of treatment will help reduce the risk for atherosclerosis tremendously. As for the genetic predisposition, it can be determined in certain cases but cannot be changed – at least not today. The treatment also involves high tech equipment. Endovascular procedures are the gold standard in most cases nowadays. Instead of opening the chest surgically for a coronary bypass operation, the interventional cardiologists/radiologists are entering the arteries through a small puncture in the wrist or groin, then using small straw-like catheters and wires to navigate to the culprit calcified plaque lesion, opening the narrowed area with a balloon and

placing a stent. The same kind of procedure is being performed in the case of other atherosclerotic arteries in the leg or neck. These procedures are very well tolerated by patients nowadays, the hospital length of stay is mostly only one day and there is no convalescence period involved due to the minimally invasive approach. Nevertheless, it is always best to opt for early detection and prevention, rather than fixing the damage. Optimal control of chronic diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure and cholesterol are important measures reducing the risk of

developing atherosclerotic disease or progression of the same. There was an energy inside me that wasn’t being channelled into helping myself or others. I decided to leave the industry, sell my car, and prepare with the best trainers in Spain. It was the hardest but also the best decision I have ever made. I had always had a deep sense of empathy and although my life wasn’t easy, I developed resources to bounce back from difficulties. I realised that my purpose lay in coaching – something I grew passionate about.

LEAVING A STABLE JOB TO PURSUE YOUR DREAMS IS ALWAYS A RISK… It was a challenge but it was also the first time I was listening to my inner voice. Precisely because I had burned bridges with the past, I didn’t give myself permission to fail. When you promise yourself that you will achieve a goal and you put your heart and soul into it, you obtain the results you are hoping for. When I started out, it was the year 2011 and we were in the midst of a global financial crisis. Then, in 2018, I started writing my book. Its success opened many doors for me. Precisely because I had taken such a big leap myself, I felt

Every day is different and it can involve visiting companies to train management, or coaching individuals in my own office. Since COVID I have been doing a lot of tele-coaching. BACK TO LA TIERRA Dr. Paul Arts and his wife Marina de Boer have opened a rural getaway in Mijas; one that is conveniently close to the hustle and bustle of urban life yet ensconced in a secret natural nook that seems like a whole other planet. RURAL GETAWAY AND PERMACULTURE PARADISE

W

hen we first featured Dr. Paul Arts in our report focused on something very different: aesthetic dentistry, a profession which seemed genuinely fitting for a Renaissance-type man who was also an artist and keen follower of the permaculture movement for some 25 years. I remember Dr. Arts telling me what a big difference a smile can make and recalling an episode in which one of his patients cried with happiness when seeing his new smile. At that time, I didn’t know he was housing a secret of his own: his own

discomfort at perceiving tension in his patients. “I can’t wait to get to the dentist,” no-one ever said, and Dr. Arts, an empath through and through, absorbed this anxiety. Over the years, it became evident to him that it was time for a change. A few years after our last meeting. Dr. Arts (whom most people simply call ‘Paul’ nowadays) headed back to Holland, where both he and his lovely wife Marina hail from. Their children were at the stage between adolescence and adulthood. Holland was convenient for their schooling and for Dr. Arts

to work freelance while exhibiting his artwork (one of his paintings, called Daniel – a semiabstract portrait of a child with a soul-searching gaze – was one of 200 selected to be exhibited at the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam from almost 10,000 works). Paul’s work is a spectacle of colour; mysterious, contemplative, and profound as the artist is himself. “When I started painting,” he says, “my style was more figurative. As time went on, I began approaching the abstract as a way to add an interactive element to my art. I enjoy seeing

people guess at what the painting expresses as ultimately, their truth is the ultimate judge of what they are contemplating.” Paul comes from an artistic, inquisitive, and active family. His twin brothers built both the heating system at home and Paul’s art house, perched above the garden. The shed was made using sustainable chestnut wood from Jubrique. “I work in the garden in the morning then paint in the afternoon,” says Paul, who takes part in art fairs and who is just about as passionate about art as he is about sustainability. A BEAUTIFUL RETREAT Paul and Marina have a lovely finca, called Back to La Tierra, in Mijas, comprising three main houses. They live in the top house, since their children, now aged 20 and 21, live independently.

There are, additionally, two accommodations used for holiday rentals, retreats, and weekend breaks. THE BACK TO LA TIERRA APARTMENT This two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment can house four guests. Measuring 68m2 and boasting floods of natural light and views to the lush garden, it also affords direct access to a beautiful pool and to the orchard itself. The Apartment is divided into two suites: Sienna and Ochre, both of which contain beautiful antique furniture pieces, many of which hail back to former generations of the family. Here, natural materials like wood and clay abound and Paul’s gorgeous art graces signature areas in the suites. For instance, Marina shows me an antique chair once belonging to her family. “We were always looking for the


perfect spot for it and we found it here. We acquired cushions that complement its upholstery beautifully and I am so happy others can now enjoy and rest on it.” The Apartment has all the amenities you could wish for – including air conditioning, heating, a kitchen and lounge, washing machine, and more. The ensuite bathroom and beautiful corner-side bathtub in the Sienna Suite is just about as Instagrammable as it can get. Ask Marina about the little details such as the handles on the kitchen cabinets made by Paul using cane obtained from the garden, which is fitting in a place where nothing goes to waste. So many magical parts of this luxurious yet totally sustainable oasis were designed and created by different members of the family – including the gorgeous table setting beneath the 300-year-old oak in the garden or the poolside relaxation area, covered with a palm leaf roof.

THE SAND STUDIO This is a smaller abode, comprising one bedroom, one bathroom, and a kitchen. It can be rented alongside The Apartment or on its own and it is ideal for couples and BFFs, since it accommodates two guests. It has a kitchen, ensuite bathroom, air conditioning and heating, and all essential amenities. There are some lovely details here as well that I have to inquire about when talking to Marina – including the stonework in the shower

that look as if they are picked from the garden but are in fact bought at a DIY shop and then turned into something artistic. “We love to turn natural elements into artistic touches by combining them with other materials.” WORKSHOPS AND COURSES DURING YOUR STAY Paul and Marina are so laidback and eager to inform guests about their unique lifestyle that it is a joy to be around them. Marina tells me that she

teaches yoga classes in the spacious outdoor yurt, made of canvas and placed directly into the Earth. Guests can also check out Paul’s artwork at the gallery, though many stunning works are also casually placed around the houses. You can also opt for an introductory permaculture course and lunch, lasting four hours, which delves into how you can make the transition from being a dependent consumer to a responsible producer.


A FAMILY WITH HEART Paul and Marina take me through the gorgeous garden. Here, ‘swales’ (or channels) built by the family collect rainwater. Vegetables, trees and shrubs grow boundlessly and their son works endlessly alongside a HelpX volunteer, using cardboard to block the sun and kill weeds without the need for pesticides (since the sun doesn’t reach the weeds, they simply die, and can then be used for mulch – a necessary ingredient in this permaculture ‘forest’). Regarding volunteers, Marina tells me, “We invite them to stay in the camper van for free and we share meals with them, and in turn they work on the land a few hours a day. Most people who ask to stay are those interested in setting up a permaculture system back home.” THE SWALES Paul explains a bit about how water is collected: “When it rains, our lower driveway turns into a river. If we do nothing, the water runs off the land again and that is a waste because Andalucía is so dry and we need to conserve water. Permaculture techniques allow us to slow down the water, spread it, and soak the land. THE COMPOST TOILET Back to La Tierra has its own well. Moreover, as part of various ongoing experiments, the property has a compost toilet in the garden which means no more flushing and a valuable gain for the compost heap. If you know little about compost toilets then you might think they smell. I checked it out and am pleased to say there was literally no smell at all. The solution is super simple and you should check out Back to La Tierra’s website if you wish to know more about it.

THE REED BED FILTER All the home’s waste water goes into a three-chamber septic tank. Solids and grease stay behind and the dirty water runs into a deposit with a pump. From there, it runs in small quantities and in short time intervals to the filtre bed. Paul says, “for the reed filter, we built a 9m3 basin, laid all the required tubing and filled it with rock wool as a substrate for the plants.” The rock wool, he adds, was obtained from a greenhouse in El Ejido – Spain’s largest agricultural

area. “It meant two long journeys with a van to one of the most depressing landscapes you have ever seen: plastic, plastic and more plastic, as far as you can see.” The rock wool was then covered with marble gravel (to eliminate smells) and the pump placed. The dirty water goes through the oxygen-supplying reeds and is released as clear, odourless water that can then be used to water the plants. THE SWIMMING POND As I sit beneath the ancient oak and happily chat with Paul and Marina, life suddenly seems infinitely more positive and beautiful. It is a joy to watch their son working relentlessly. I’ll admit that I know people this age and you wouldn’t catch them working outside or separated from their devices and phones for


more than a few minutes. Paul’s son beams with a huge smile when he sees me; he has every inch of the kindness and gentleness of his parents, who are doing this, Paul says, “not for ourselves but to leave something to them.”

he truth is that those who attend smaller private schools are lucky indeed; in many of Marbella’s top international schools, classes are small in size, with some having no more than nine or 10 students. This makes the idea of social distancing more doable, but of course, many parents are still concerned about how much distancing will be respected between students themselves, plus issues such as surface germs, shared materials, and the like. The matter of masks is another thing; in my

school we have been told that they will be required when we are in hallways and other spaces in which social distancing is impossible or difficult. However, it seems that within our classes, we won’t have to wear masks – something that my mum in particular is worried about, since it is precisely in small gatherings and in airconditioned rooms that many people have been infected. I have no doubt that this year will be different, particularly in terms of classes like physical education, where in the

past much of the activity was centred around contact sports. We will most likely be engaging in more individual types of sport, something that suits me as I am into running and other ‘lone ranger’ means of keeping fit. I also wonder how things will be for senior students. Last year, of course, there was a big issue in the UK when the closing of schools meant that students were not able to take their A-levels. As many of you may know, teachers were told to submit the grades they thought each student


would have received if they had sat for the exams and the grades were later reviewed by the regulatory body, Ofqual. The latter felt that the teachers had been too generous with their grading and worried about the possibility of ‘grade inflation’. They therefore created an algorithm to decide grades instead of trusting the teachers. The new algorithm resulted in around 40 per cent of the teachers’ predicted grades being downgraded (only two per cent of students’ marks improved). This led to public outcry, with many students complaining that the algorithm punished high achievers from less affluent families, whose schools had not achieved high A-level scores in the past. They also argued that the algorithm appeared to favour students from exclusive private schools (since the percentage of students from feepaying schools who had obtained high marks was more than double that of those awarded to students from public schools). There were many heartbreaking stories of students who had already been accepted into top universities, only to lose the chance to do so because the offer was contingent on them achieving the requisite number of A grades (something they would in all likelihood have done if they had actually sat the exams). Finally, Ofqual

changed its policy, allowing students to use whichever estimate was higher (i.e. the teachers’ estimate or the algorithm results). All’s well that ends well but the process certainly caused much upset. There is no doubt that next year will be another unique one. Some predict that part-time attendance will eventually be the norm (i.e. students attending school in person twice a week or so instead of every day). Others think the government will once again impose online learning. In reality these drastic measures can be reduced if we all just do our share. Less parties, less risk-taking, less denying the evident problem. The way each of us behaves has such a big impact on everyone else so, as far as I am concerned, this is more a matter of duty than discretion. e

Many families will tell you that their pooch can sense when a baby is on the way – even though exactly how much they know is conjectural. The American Kennel Club reports that because dogs have a keen sense of smell, they can most probably detect changes in a woman’s body when she is expecting. Dogs have 60 times as many smell receptors as humans and they can differentiate up to 100,000 aromas! This might explain why they suddenly become more clingy, hypervigilant, and protective of pregnant women. The humancanine bond is a mysterious and wonderful thing indeed.

The world seemed to have ended for Ms. Jennifer, a 53-year-old tortoise, when her owner passed away due to COVID-19. The reptile was taken to an animal adoption centre in Boston and it wasn’t long before floods of calls came in from people wanting to take her home. Ms. Jennifer’s previous owner was a woman who “absolutely doted” on her, “showing her off to friends and strangers alike,” the adoption agency said. Staff recently held a birthday party for the sweet tortoise, who will soon go to a worthy owner who can give her the love she deserves. Pet tortoises have an average lifespan of more than 70 years, so they are a long-term commitment indeed!

n my recent visit to Protec, I was impressed by the sheer scale of their operations. They have three large warehouses and offices, with numerous departments filled with dynamic teams of technicians. Silvia explains, “We specialise in top quality windows and doors, offering discerning clients features like thermal insulation, anti-theft protection, and energysavings.” Windows that are made-to-measure

It’s happening thanks to people such as Jesper Wiberg who, drawn to the area by its quality of life, are sharing their international knowledge and working in tech-based companies with the ambition of becoming market leaders in their industry. Michel Cruz talks to one of the founding partners of TraceMyFile about an innovative service that helps web users protect and recover not just their data, but their privacy too. he Internet gives us a world of knowledge, news, entertainment and the ability to connect with friends and make new ones, but it comes at a price. Privacy is increasingly a thing of the past, and while mass marketing companies use your online behaviour to profile your interests and direct accompanying advertising at you, there are other, more sinister forces at work too. Think

not only of hackers who steal your data, your intellectual property and even blackmail people, but also of trolls and bullies who spread personal information and images across the internet. The cloud is meant to offer full protection against this, but it is primarily designed to hold vast amounts of information in a protected environment, like money in a bank,

and it doesn’t entirely work as a fireproof vault, so like a bank it can be attacked and robbed. A SAFE DATA STORAGE AND RECOVERY SERVICE TraceMyFile was founded by Swedish couple Gunnar and Diana Nilsson in Marbella with the belief that online privacy should be accessible to everyone, not only to professional players and established companies that can afford it. Though the company is now based in London, a lot is done from Marbella thanks to Danish business and sales professional Jesper Wiberg. Jesper’s working career led him through Denmark, England, Australia and the USA to Marbella where he joined TraceMyFile shortly after it was founded. “Our Swedish developers have created state-ofthe-art image recognition technology that has many potential applications – from guarding trademarks and rights-protected material, not to mention the reputation of large corporations, to helping the police and security agencies in their work. Yet our initial focus is not so

much on commercial and institutional clients but on everyday internet users like you and me,” says Jesper. Most new firms of this kind would use a top-down approach that begins with lucrative big corporate clients and then gradually trickles down to private users, but TraceMyFile has adopted the opposite approach, focusing for now on creating a range of data protection and recovery services aimed at normal people. The service is under full development, with new applications being launched all the time, but at present the core service consists of providing comprehensive image protection in its storage, sharing, tracing and monitoring. These services protect the digital assets, copyright and intellectual rights, privacy and reputation of its users, and in addition to placing your new material in an online ‘vault’ safe from hackers and trolls,

This summer, much-loved teacher Ms Anne Smyth retired from Swans School, after an amazing forty one years of service. Over all those years of incredibly meaningful and loyal contribution to the school, she saw generations of children arrive as nervous three year olds and leave as confident, educated adults with a bright future ahead of them. She had been their teacher, their swimming coach but, more importantly, she had been a wise, positive, inspiring and stable presence in their lives, someone they could always turn to in moments of doubt. A

nne arrived in Marbella from the UK in 1979, feeling (by her own admission) a little disillusioned with teaching. She had worked at a tough British school and had begun to wonder if the career was right for her. She had set off travelling around the world, but she met Ms Tessa Swan-Liggan, founder and owner of Swans School, who encouraged her to work for just a few terms at the school, which was still fairly new. Ms Tessa has many wonderful memories of that time, in which the school was housed in just a few small

buildings in El Capricho, and had an impressive number of school pets including donkeys, horses, goats and rabbits. Those few terms that Anne had originally intended to work at the school before going off travelling turned into a few more terms, and then into years, and then into decades. Swans School has always been very much a family affair. It is family-run and owned, and many former students grow up and send their own children to the school. Unsurprisingly then, Anne has watched generations of families pass through the school

(including her own two sons). One of her former students was Jayne Hunter, now Managing Director of Swans School. She remembers vividly her inspiring geography lessons, earning swimming badges under Anne’s tutelage, the weekend camping trips, and being taught karate by Anne’s husband Mick. Jayne chose to educate her two daughters at Swans, and very much values the meaningful role Anne has played in their lives too, as well as the privilege of working alongside her. More recent years have seen Anne branch out into

charity work. As Director and School Liaison Officer for charity RifCom, she has travelled many times to Morocco, to the Rif mountain range, where she oversees projects that improve the lives of poor rural populations. This desire and determination to make the world a better place is something she has brought to the school – over the years, she has led many trips to Morocco, where students have had the opportunity to see the disparity between their lives and those of

people in a country that neighbours their own. Even those students who haven’t travelled themselves have been encouraged to do what they can, either by donating money, clothes, shoes, stationery, toothbrushes, or by helping to sort and pack the goods that are collected to be taken to the projects. The philosophical effect this has had on the entire culture of the Swans community cannot be understated – we all think of the world differently now that we have been inspired

by Anne’s can-do attitude. We can make a difference, we can change the world – it starts with a single step. Fellow longstanding staff member and primary teacher Janice Adamson said that Anne is “the person that everyone turns to for honest advice and support, always there to listen.” On behalf of Swans’ current Student Council, Teresa Urbano said Anne “embodies the word encouraging; she always tries to help everyone, and always manages to make

everyone’s day much better,” and Deputy Head Student Alexia Collot D’Escury said “if there is one thing that all Swans students can agree on, it’s that Ms Anne is a role model for all of us. I don’t think that words can truly describe what an inspiration she has been for our generation.” Ms Tessa says that Anne is “a part of Swans’ history and its future,” and we are so glad that Anne will continue to oversee Swans’ collaboration with RifCom and be a part of enriching our students’ school experience. She is a one-off, who truly practises what she preaches, living the life she means to inspire in others. Just like the fact that she isn’t just a swimming coach – she is a member of a local swimming team who swims competitively and wins races for her age group regularly – she isn’t just someone who talks about the

importance of charity, she lives by it. Long after graduation, it has always been Ms Anne that alumni remember. When her photograph appears on the school Facebook page, it gets more likes and comments than any other, and for good reason. HARNESSING THE FLAVOUR OF CUISINE WITHOUT FRONTIERS He is one of Spain’s best-loved and most highly lauded chefs. Quique Dacosta, born and raised in Jarandilla de la Vera, is the founder of an eponymous restaurant in Dénia, Alicante – an establishment that has garnered an enviable three Michelin stars and a reputation for cuisine that blends vision and tradition to perfection. One of the most striking things about this chef is that he is entirely self-taught. Curious and passionate about food since his youth, he recalls discussing this profession when he was 14 years of age with his mother. uique decided to put all his time and effort into being a chef in 1986 (at El Poblet, now Quique Dacosta restaurant). Back then, all he really wanted was “to make a living in a simple way; to run a humble, artisanal business; to give our clients food and drink, to feed the soul as well as to provide fuel for the body.” Many days have passed since then but, interestingly, he says that his team’s ideology remains virtually the same. “Our territory is our signature; tradition and memory lend us stability and authenticity… the table is the best place to express identity.”

In 2012/2013, Quique Dacosta restaurant received three stars from the Michelin Guide and it has featured consistently in Restaurant Magazine’s The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list. It was also named Best Restaurant in Europe (2012 and 2013) in the prestigious list, Opinionated About Dining, by Steve Plotnicki. In 2013, the chef was declared Doctor Honoris Causa in Fine Arts by the University Miguel Hernández. These are just a tiny representation of the many awards garnered by Quique and his team. Without a doubt one

5TH GENERATION OF BODEGAS MÁLAGA VIRGEN & FOUNDER OF MARBELLA BLUSH ROSÉ TELL US ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE MARBELLA BLUSH ROSÉ Firstly, for those not familiar with our winery (Bodegas Málaga Virgen), we are a family winery founded in 1885, so we have more than 135 years as experts in the refinement of Classic Fortified Málaga wines from the Pedro Ximénez and Moscatel grape varieties. recent varieties grown in the region such as Syrah, Merlot, Tempranillo, Chardonnay, Verdejo, etc. We now have more than 35 wine references, comprising the two categories (Fortified and Still). The new Marbella Blush Rosé wine is a very personal project with a historical connection. Back in the old days we also produced Marbella Verde, which was a sweet white wine. So, the expertise for the production of


Marbella wine has been within our family for many years. As regards the innovative Blush Rosé, I would simply say that it has been developed for the same reason as all the good things happen in life, because of a woman, the woman of my life. Together, we have enjoyed many of the beach clubs and restaurants around the area, and I was always surprised how often she would order Rosé wines from one specific region outside of Spain. And the explanation was quite simple too, it was a pale wine, light in

aroma and taste and at the same time very lively and refreshing. Therefore, it was clear that there existed an opportunity in the market to produce something locally.

I strongly recommend a food pairing with Thai food and Sushi but also as a quality drink to enjoy with friends on an afternoon or evening. HOW COME IT IS NAMED MARBELLA? As mentioned before, our family was also previously producing a Marbella wine, but we wanted to do something special. And if we were going to make a Blush Rosé, there is not a better brand to name it after than ‘Marbella’ as it consists of more than just a place, synonymous with a lifestyle which matches very well with the Rosé vibe! Also, we have been very careful in designing the presentation, from

the spectacular sensual bottle, silkscreened label, and the exclusive crystal vinolok closure. WHERE CAN WE FIND THE WINE? This may not be the best year to release a new product onto the market but here we are! We already had the production in our wine tanks so we had to bottle it and launch it. We can say that we are very proud of the tremendous acceptance Marbella Blush Rosé is having since its release back in May. For the time being, we are present in some of the most exclusive restaurants, clubs and beach clubs in the area such as Trocadero, Lov Olivia Valère, Occo, Naô Pool Club, Naga, Divot Gastro Grill, La Sole del Pimpi, and many others.
