The Burrell ...

THE Burrell Collection has been described as ‘one of the most remarkable assemblages of works of art ever brought together by one man’ and ‘one of the greatest gifts ever made to any city in the world’.

The collection of over 9000 works of art were given to the city of Glasgow by Sir William Burrell in 1944. Sir William added to the collection regularly until his death in 1958 and purchases continue to be supported by a trust he established.

Sir William Burrell focused his collecting mainly on northern European medieval and renaissance art, Chinese art, Islamic Art, contemporary European painting and antiquities.

His deep understanding of these subjects and his eye for quality enabled him to build up an exceptional collection of outstanding international importance. Some parts of the collection are comparable in quality and significance to the best of the V&A, London and the Metropolitan Museum, New York.

The Must See Attraction

The Burrell Collection’s renaissance is providing the opportunity to redisplay and reinterpret this wonderful collection. When the museum re-opens, over a third more gallery space will allow more important and unique works of art, which have not been seen for decades or have never been on permanent display before, to go on show.

This ambitious refurbishment will allow visitors, for the first time, to explore all three floors in the building, set out as galleries, visible stores and special exhibition spaces.

Enhanced catering facilities will encourage all park users to stop and take in this magnificent collection.

The fabric of the building is being improved with additional entrances to improve access. A dedicated learning and education centre will provide an unprecedented opportunity to understand the collection, alongside technology to better connect and interact with the works of art on display.

While the Burrell has been closed, the most comprehensive outreach programme ever undertaken by Glasgow Life Museums has established new links between thousands of people living near the Burrell and Pollok Country Park, to support and inform the development of the new displays.

Acting as a catalyst for the transformation of Pollok Country Park within which it sits, the museum will connect with the city and its beautiful park setting. Work with local commuities has helped shape the redesign and remove many barriers to access.

Along with displays and public programming, the Burrell Collection will be a place of learning, of inspiration and a museum of which Glasgow can be proud, highlighting the city’s cultural standing in the world.

∞ Pollokshaws West: Located on Pollokshaws Road, the nearest entrance to Pollok Country Park is at 2060 Pollokshaws Road, less than a 5 minute walk. Exit station, turning left onto Pollokshaws Road and you will see the park entrance shortly after on your left.

∞ Shawlands: Located on Pollokshaws Road, 10 minute walk to the Pollokshaws Road entrance of Pollok Country Park. Exit station, turning right and follow Pollokshaws Road to park entrance on your right.

PARK SHUTTLE BUS

A free electric shuttle bus is now operating in the park. The bus runs 7 days, 9.30am-6.30pm in a 20-30 minute loop, linking the park entrance at 2060 Pollokshaws Road to The Burrell Collection and Pollok House.

BY CAR

Pollok Country Park and The Burrell Collection can be accessed by car at 2060 Pollokshaws Road, via junction 2 of the M77. The postcode for the museum is G43 1AT. Access to Pollok House is via Dumbreck Road, near Junction 1 of the M77.

Ride along and take in some sightseeing with Glasgow Bike Tours. Visit locations where you can see spectacular views of the city, not possible by bus or car. The whole tour is outside and the route is generally flat and has been designed using cycle paths, river and canal pathways and minor roads with very little traffic. Appropriate safety measures have been put in place with guides wearing face coverings where distancing can’t be maintained and bikes and helmets are sanitised between every ride. Making space for cyclists

Glasgow City Council’s Spaces for People programme has been developed to give cyclists and pedestrians more space to roam in the city centre and encourage more active travel. It aims to deliver 36km of new cycle lanes across the city and cycle parking at 50 new locations. There is already a new Clydeside pop-up cycle lane which provides dedicated space for cyclists travelling west and runs for 1.5 miles between Saltmarket and the Clyde Arc, and more cycle parking has been installed in George Square. This spectacular museum was designed by the internationally renowned architect Zaha Hadid and sits on the banks of the River Clyde, site of the famous Clyde shipbuilding industry. The museum features the largest object in Glasgow Museums’ collection, the South African Railways locomotive 3007, as well as the world’s oldest bicycle and a recreated early 1900’s street. This is no conventional transport museum though – the stories of the people who made, drove and used transport are centre-stage with the objects.

The Mackintosh House is a meticulous reassemblage of the principal interiors from the Mackintoshes’ Glasgow home. The couple lived at 78 Southpark Avenue (originally 6 Florentine Terrace) from 1906 to 1914. Substantial alterations were made in 1906 as Mackintosh remodelled the proportions and natural lighting of the Victorian end-of-terrace house. The principal interiors were decorated in his distinctive style, remarkable then, and now, for the disciplined austerity of the furnishings and decoration.

Glasgow Museums’ art collection is one of the finest in the UK. It consists of some 60,000 objects covering a wide range of media including paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture, metalwork, ceramics, glass, jewellery, furniture and textiles. It provides a comprehensive overview of the history of European art and design and includes masterpieces by major artists such as Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Whistler and Dali. The art from non-European cultures includes an internationally renowned collection of Chinese art.

The Human History collection in Glasgow Museums encompasses a range of disciplines including ancient civilizations, anthropology, archaeology, religious studies Scottish history and social history. It includes a very significant collection of arms and armour, an extensive collection of world cultures and a representative collection from the Ancient World. The extensive holdings relating to the history and prehistory of the west of Scotland are supplemented by equally important, though less comprehensive, collections of Scottish history and prehistory, with additional elements of archaeology and history from across Britain and its former empire.

The natural history collection at Glasgow Museums is the most outstanding natural history collection in a civic museum in Scotland and is also one of the largest natural history collections owned by a Local Authority anywhere in the UK. Specimens range across a broad spectrum of zoology, botany and geology. Many of the specimens relate to Glasgow and the west of Scotland but there are also extremely important collections from other parts of Scotland and all over the world. The Gallowgate, that stretch of Glasgow's east end that begins just a few minutes' walk away from Buchanan Street has a couthy charm mixed with a growing modern vibe that makes it unique in the city.

It has been said that Gallowgate retains "much of its distinctive earthy charm" despite wholesale demolition and regeneration and provides a taste of the city's authentic character.

Over at Calton Entry, the thriving BAaD - Barras Art and Design - includes a fish restaurant, A'Challtainn, as well as concerts and a Sunday indoor market.

The once famous Baird's Bar has reopened as a restaurant, 226 Gallowgate, and in Bain Street, close by the Barrowland, there is Saint Luke's, a noted livemusic venue, and the award-winning Winged Ox Bar & Kitchen.

Other key local venues are the Van Winkle Bourbon BBQ Grill, at 267 and the award-winning pub. Hielan' Jessie, at 374 and ,of course, WEST Brewery, at the Templeton Building on Glasgow Green.

'Barras Queen' Maggie McIver started a market that became a legend

The original Barrowland Ballroom opened in 1934 in a mercantile area east of Glasgow’s city centre and was built by “Barras Queen” Maggie McIver and her husband James.

The Barrowland building includes large street-level halls used for the weekend markets, with a sizeable weatherproof hall above.

The front of the building boasts a distinctive neon sign which is believed to be the biggest of its kind in the UK.

Bowie, Biffy Clyro, Oasis, U2, The Stranglers, The Clash, The Smiths, Big Country, Muse, Foo Fighters, Franz Ferdinand, Texas, Simple Minds, Snow Patrol, SLF, The Vatersay Boys and many others have played the Ballroom.

Adjacent to the Ballroom is the Barrowland Park where there is a pathway which features the names of many artists ,who have played at the Ballroom over the decades.

The Glasgow Murals ... wall to wall entertainment

The street murals are helping to rejuvenate streets and revitalise buildings and vacant sites that look a bit tired, reincarnating them as beautiful pieces of public street art.

The murals are also having a major impact on our city centre by creating splashes of colour which brighten up lanes and streets. This helps make them more inviting for locals and tourists alike to visit and supports local businesses.

Now Glasgow has created a Mural Trail featuring the diverse range of art within easy

walking distance of the city centre. The huge range of artwork on display has something to suit all tastes - conservative to radical, quirky to bizarre.

Artists are encouraged to get involved in this Glasgow City Council initiative through application to the city centre Mural Fund.

Discover the Merchant City ...

Glasgow Merchant City is a neighbourhood with its own identity located within the city centre area. Like many inner city areas throughout the world, the Merchant City has transformed itself from a former commercial trading area into the cool, chic haven of style that exists today. But it wasn’t always that way.

The Merchant City is one of the oldest quarters of Glasgow and has been the home to monks, merchants and merry makers for centuries. In medieval times orangeries and rose gardens once scented the air, but as the city developed this pretty little area is where the dog and bird markets, bowling greens and places of entertainment could be found.

Throughout the eighties and nineties the Merchant City has been revitalised. Old warehouses became modern fashion houses; empty market buildings have been given new

life as restaurants or bars and loft living and the birth of a strong and vibrant community arrived in style.

Artists colonised run-downworkshops and empty shop units; vacated merchants houses became hotels and restaurants while redundant churches have found new congregations in the theatre-going and music-loving audiences of the city; namely the Tron Theatre and St. Andrew’s in the Square.

Today the Merchant City is a remarkable mix of

stylish bars, boutique hotels, luxury apartments, restaurants, shops and artists galleries. And amongst it all there still survive a few hidden gems, such as the Britannia Panopticon Music Hall where Stan Laurel made his debut or the architectural splendour of the magnificent 18th century St. Andrew’s in the Square or the sublime City Halls and Old Fruitmarket.

Whatever the content of these buildings the style and elegance of the architecture remains to be enjoyed by all.

Hard Rock Cafe Glasgow is located in the heart of Glasgow’s historic Style Mile in the restored, renaissanceinspired Athenaeum Theatre. Hamiltonhill Claypits Local Nature Reserve is an urban oasis, just a mile from Glasgow city centre. An inner-city parkland, the Claypits is a 950 hectare greenspace, home to an array of plants, trees and wildlife including roe deer, peregrine falcons, whitethroat warblers and a host of waterfowl. Originally the home of a clay quarry used when the Forth and Clyde Canal was first built in the late 1700s, it was also the site of a foundry, glassworks and boat-building yard. The Claypits are now open providing access to new pathways, boardwalks and a pedestrian bridge which connects the west and east sides of the canal north of Applecross Basin. Glasgow’s West End district is only about two miles away from the city centre but a world away in terms of its unique character and style. From culture to horticulture - let Glasgow flourish

Glasgow Botanic Gardens is a botanical garden located in the West End of Glasgow, Scotland. It features several glasshouses, the most notable of which is the Kibble Palace.

The Gardens has a wide variety of temperate and tropical flora, a herb garden, a chronological bed with plants arranged according to their introduction to Scotland, the UK's national collection of tree ferns, woodland copses, riverside walks and a world rose garden officially opened in 2003 by Princess Tomohito of Mikasa.

The River Kelvin runs along the north side of the Gardens and continues through Kelvingrove Park, the Kelvin walkway providing an uninterrupted walking route between the two green spaces.

Kibble Palace is a magnificent glasshouse designed by John Kibble and houses the national collection of tree ferns whil plants from tropical rainforests grow in the palm house.

Thomas Hopkirk, a distinguished Glasgow botanist, founded the Botanic Gardens with the support of a number of local dignitaries and the University of Glasgow in 1817.

The Gardens were originally laid out on an 8 acre site at Sandyford at the western end of Sauchiehall Street (at that time, on the edge of the city).

The Royal Botanical Institution of Glasgow owned and ran the Gardens and agreed to provide the University of Glasgow with teaching aids, including a supply of plants for medical and botanical classes.

Stewart Murray, the first curator, laid out the grounds and Hopkirk donated three thousand plants as the nucleus of the collection. In 1821 William Jackson Hooker, one of the most eminent botanists in the world at the time, was appointed Professor of Botany at the University of Glasgow.

The Gardens flourished to such an extent that in 1839 a new site, to the west of the city on the banks of the River Kelvin, was purchased to house the rapidly expanding collections. In 1842 the new Gardens opened on their present site. Members of the Royal Botanic Institution of Glasgow had a right to free entrance. The public

were admitted only at weekends and had each to pay a fee of a penny.

The Kibble Palace which now houses a forest of tree ferns was originally a private conservatory located at Coulport on Loch Long. It was moved to its present site in 1873 and was first used as a concert hall and meeting place, hosting celebrated speakers such as Gladstone and Disraeli.

Glasgow Corporation took over the Gardens in 1891, agreeing that they should continue as a Botanic Garden and maintain links with the University.

The Tearooms can be found in the former Curator’s house near to the Kibble Palace. In addition to the comfortable indoor seating area, visitors can take advantage of the summer weather and enjoy the surrounding plants in the outdoor refreshment area in front of the house.

There is also a children’s play area within the gardens.

Th gardens host many events from the Bard at the Botanics to te annual orchid fair and a series of guided walks.

BALLOCH is the gateway to Loch Lomond and the truly stunning beauty that is the area around Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park.

Getting here is easy. Balloch is less than forty minutes from Glasgow Airport and has good bus links as well as a regular, half hourly direct train service from Glasgow Queen Street Station.

Balloch is a thriving, bustling village where you can enjoy a great range of activities.

Visit Balloch Country Park, enjoy a loch cruise with frequent departures throughout the day or simply wander into the lovely shops and restaurants along the main street. Take a short walk along to Loch Lomond Shores where you will find shopping, dining and family fun.

Cardross is one of Helensburgh and Lomond’s hidden gems. Not immediatly obvious as a fruitful stopping place Cardross actually offers great value for time spent with a wealth of wonderful history and options for sport and great dining thrown in. Included in the package are the wonderful old parish church ruined by a stray bomb during the Clydebank Blitz,

the once magnificent brutalist St Peter’s Seminary and the wonderful medieval St Mahew’s Chapel which is still in use. On a less ecclesiastical note there is the beautifully situated Carman Trout Fishery, Cardross Golf Club, the National Trust for Scotland’s Geilston Gardens and the quaint Geilston Hall which is now thought to be an early C R Mackintosh design.

OVERLOOKING the River Clyde, the towns of Dumbarton and Clydebank were both noted for their shipbuilding – a story told at the Denny Ship Model Experiment Tank in Dumbarton.

Dumbarton’s shipbuilding heritage includes the building of the famous clipper ‘Cutty Sark’. Dumbarton Castle on its fortified rock has long guarded the Clyde approaches. A ruined chapel in the grounds of Levengrove Park boasts the final resting place of part of the remains of Robert the Bruce whose home was once

nearby and the town also lays claim to the bard Robert Burns who was made Freeman of the Burgh.

HELENSBURGH is approximately 20 miles north west of Glasgow. Sir James Colquhoun designed the town in 1780 and named it after his wife Helen.

An elegant town, with streets laid out in a grid pattern many of which are tree-lined, the most notable ones with Japanese Cherry.

Helensburgh has an outstanding collection of houses designed by famous architects including Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Leiper and Honeyman. Mackintosh’s Hill House is the most well known and sits high above the Clyde

commanding fine views over the estuary. Other famous local connections include Henry Bell who pioneered the steamship “Comet”, whose maiden voyage was from Helensburgh to Greenock.

The original fly-wheel memorial can be seen on the east seafront esplanade. John Logie Baird, the inventor of television was born here, and a memorial to him can be found on the seafront.

The West Highland Line ...

The world famous West Highland Line with its quaint Swiss chalet stations was voted the World’s Best Railway Journey by readers of the Wanderlust travel magazine ... and not without reason.

The route from Glasgow to Mallaig and Fortwilliam snakes its way through stunning countryside and across breathtaking ravines spanned by stunning concrete structures which were record breaking and revolutionary when they were built.

Borrodale Burn bridge became the world’s longest concrete span at 127 feet, and Glenfinnan Viaduct was a huge structure in concrete at 416 yards long with 21 arches.

This historic route combines the romance of the Scottish Highlands with the breathtaking beauty of the rural countryside and adds a little bit of Harry Potter magic along the way.

Glasgow to Crianlarich

From Glasgow Queen Street station the train travels uphill towards the Kilpatrick hills, providing impressive views of the Erskine Bridge and down the Clyde Estuary towards the Firth of Clyde.

Pass through the small villages and towns on the Clyde – such as Bowling, Dumbarton (with its celebrated castle), Cardross (where Robert the Bruce lived) and Garelochhead – you will be treated to your first glimpse of the ‘Arrochar Alps’.

At Garelochhead station you get stunning panoramic views of the Gare Loch, with Loch Long just starting to come into view. The jetty below is Finnart deep-water terminal, built by the US Navy during the Second World

The World’s best train journey

War. Tankers discharge their oil here to be pumped by pipeline to Grangemouth, 60 miles away to the east.

Approaching Arrochar, look left for great views of the celebrated ‘Arrochar Alps’, including such craggy peaks as the Beinn Narnain, Beinn Ime and the well-loved Cobbler. Shortly after departing Arrochar

& Tarbet station, the world-renowned bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond appear on the right.

Across the loch, dominated by the towering presence of Ben Lomond, this area was once home to Rob Roy MacGregor, legendary warrior, robber and folk hero. He used to question captives in a nearby cave – and wasn’t averse to dipping them in the loch to extract information!

Enjoy the magnificent scenery surrounding Loch Lomond before arriving in Crianlarich.

Here the train line divides, with the western route turning towards Oban, and the north continuing up to Fort William and Mallaig.

Mallaig

Just beyond Upper Tyndrum, the northbound fork of the West Highland Line navigates the massive sentinels of Beinn Odhar and Beinn Dorain in the unique Horseshoe Curve.

Next stop is Bridge of Orchy - well known to walkers and climbers alike as a landmark hamlet on the West Highland Way – where nearby you’ll find the ruin of Achallader Castle.

Passing Loch Tulla on the left, the line starts to cross the wild Rannoch Moor, a vast wilderness, where the railway ‘floats’ on top of the moor on a mattress of tree roots, brushwood, earth and ashes. Arriving at Corrour, you are now 1350 feet above sea level - the highest mainline station in the UK. The station is one of the most remote in Britain (the nearest road is 10 miles away) and is also famous for appearing in the hit film ‘Trainspotting’ (and the sequel) starring Ewan McGregor.

After passing through Tulloch and shortly before arriving in Roy Bridge, look out for the foaming waters of Monessie Gorge on the left. Once you have passed through Spean Bridge, just before the train pulls into Fort William, the massive bulk of the Nevis Range comes into full view. At just over 4,400ft, Ben Nevis is not only

Britain’s highest mountain but covers a huge land area with a base circumference of 24 miles.

From Fort William you’ll soon be heading off on the final section of the Line, en route to Mallaig. Almost as soon as your journey begins the line crosses part of the Caledonian Canal, Britain’s longest inland waterway, which links Fort William with Inverness. To the right is Neptune’s Staircase, a series of eight canal locks.

The curve of the 100ft-high Glenfinnan Viaduct sweeps you past the head of Loch Shiel and the monument to Bonnie Prince Charlie, marking where he landed and unfurled his standard in 1745 to start the Jacobite Rebellion.

After passing through the beautiful lochs and hills surrounding Lochailort and Beasdale, you arrive in Arisaig – a popular tourist spot with due to its spectacular views over Loch Nan Ceall where you can see the islands of Rum and Eigg. Less than 10 minutes

later you’ll see the spectacular silver sands of Morar, made famous in the 1983 film ‘Local Hero’ starring Burt Lancaster and Peter Capaldi. You’ll also cross Scotland’s shortest river, which runs out of our deepest loch - Loch Morar.

As you approach Mallaig take in the breathtaking jagged peaks of Skye.

Crianlarich to Oban

The Oban line passes through Tyndrum Lower and takes you through beautiful Glen Lochy to Dalmally; and just beyond stands the ruin of Kilchurn Castle, ancient stronghold of Clan Campbell.

Around the head of Loch Awe is the Pass of Brander, which skirts the towering bulk of Ben Cruachan – the Hollow Mountain – which conceals a fascinating secret; the mountain caverns house an innovative hydro power scheme inside. To the left is the River Awe, setting for Sir Walter Scott’s romance ‘The Highland Widow’.

Nearing Oban now and approaching Connel Ferry, you can see the Falls of Lora, a tidal race at the narrow entrance to Loch Etive. This natural occurrence, caused by a fast-moving tide, produces white rapids that can last for up to five days.

Your final stop on this section of the Line, Oban, is a popular tourist destination, well-known for its many seafood restaurants.

Escape to the country with Highland Explorer

ScotRail is opening up some of Scotland’s most beautiful areas to tourists, cycling fans, outdoor pursuits enthusiasts and local commuters with its new ScotRail Highland Explorer service.

Three carriages, which are a first of their kind for the UK rail network, will operate along the world famous and iconic West Highland Line from Glasgow to Oban, from Monday, 19 July, allowing customers to escape to the country. There were complex challenges to overcome, such as the lack of space on public transport for carrying large sporting equipment.

But, working with Transport Scotland, cycling groups and outdoor specialists, the design team at ScotRail came up with an innovative solution to accommodate up to 20 cycles and bulky sports gear.

The redesigned carriage boasts space for ordinary bikes, a limited number of tandem cycles and an e-bike charging socket – unique on a train in the UK.

The carriages had a full interior and exterior refresh including installation of free WiFi, at seat power points and USB sockets, and a refurbished toilet.

The West Highland Line was chosen for the initial launch because of the access it provides to the rest of Scotland.

Starting in Glasgow, the line takes passengers through Loch Lomond and The Trossachs to Oban. From here they can travel to majestic western isles such as Barra, Islay and Tiree.

Customers must book their cycle’s space to guarantee its place on board. To support physical distancing the train operator will adopt the same approach as the rest of their network allowing customers to choose their seat once on board.
