sweet memories MEET OUR

HOTTIE DAD 2019!

But, as I reflect on the school year and the summer fun that is here, it dawns on me… these years of craziness will end, and sooner than I am ready for. Of course, I don’t think I will miss screaming out the phrase “Is your homework done?” But, I am slowly realizing that the years are going by quickly… way to quickly. And, when I am in the thick of it, it is hard to stop and smell the peanut butter and jelly. As my oldest embarks on high school in the fall and my youngest enters middle school, with no more kiddos in elementary school ever (sniff, sniff), the panic that my tribe is getting one day closer to leaving and embarking on new adventures is settling in.

And, just like every modern day family, we move fast, even through the summer time. Sometimes the lazy days of summer are “rushed” in between camps, work and life. It’s sad, but true, right? Before we know it, the summer will be coming to a close, back to school shopping lists are printed out and old lunch boxes are thrown away while new ones are sitting poised on the counter, ready to be filled. My word… time must slow down.

Slowing down is what I have in store for this summer. Dinners, playtime, snuggles and movie nights will be longer. Summer will be a time to disconnect and reconnect with the kids, maybe against their will sometime, and to create some memories that will hold this momma bear through the years when they are off on their own adventures (sniff, sniff)!

Cheers to an amazing summer of memories!

I think many parents can agree that it has been a race to this year’s finish line… AKA SUMMER! Between the homework x3, lunch x3, sports practices x3, their games x3 and everything in between… I. AM. DONE! Summer cannot come fast enough this year, and I am welcoming it with open arms. And, as I type these words, I slowly realize that with summer, comes a whole new set of challenges. Camps x3, summer work x3, sunscreen applications x3. Huh, I guess the saying is true, “a mother’s job is never done!”

Whitney Spellicy PHOTOS BY SHANNON AUSTIN PHOTOGRAPHY

Whitney Spellicy is the practice manager of three UFHealth Pediatric offices: Magnolia Parke, Tioga and Tower Square. She and her husband, Kevin, have two daughters, Harper (5) and Austen (3), as well as a dog, cat and three chickens.

MORNING 4:45 a.m. Mornings come early in the Spellicy house. I’m

usually woken up around this hour to either let out our dog, Mick, or to the sound of “Mommy- MOVE over”, which means our youngest, Austen, has snuck into our room, for who knows how long, and has been sleeping on only my side of the bed. After getting everyone settled, I’m back to sleep for a little bit longer.

6:15 a.m. My alarm goes off, I hit snooze for just one more minute.

6:45 a.m. Shower time. Like any other mother, this precious

10 minutes of quiet is interrupted with Harper and Austen asking me how their outfits look. I crush their dreams by telling them their clothes don’t match and to go get changed again.

7:25 a.m. I check my phone before leaving to make sure there have been no provider or staff call-outs for the day at work. The Spellicys are ready to head out the door. Kevin buckles the kids

NEW FEATURE! bit. Kevin has dinner ready, so we quickly sit down to eat and tell each other about our days. Harper tells us about her new sight words at school and Austen tells us who she played with today.

7 p.m. Bath time and slowly settling

down for the night. The girls decide to watch some Disney Junior, and Kevin and I check emails from the after work hours.

7:30 p.m. It's time for bed for Harper

in and we scramble everyone in my SUV. Harper and Austen argue about what we should listen to on the radio – I win, so today it’s Garth Brooks and we sing along as we drive to school.

7:35 a.m. My favorite part of the day.

Day care drop off. I help the girls have breakfast and sit down with them for five to 10 minutes. I catch up with the other day care moms, and laugh at the crazy conversations that the kiddos have with their friends. After breakfast, I walk the girls to their individual classroom and grab a quick hug and kiss.

12 p.m. Lunch time! I usually have

working lunches. Today, it's a Blue Highway salad and throughout my lunch I'm updating my medical director on how things are going in the practice, and what the plan looks like with for the rest of the week. After our quick lunch, I run home and briefly let my dog out and then it's back to work before 1 p.m.

AFTERNOON 1 p.m. Time to work on staffing and

7:45 a.m. Fight the Gainesville traffic on the way one of my offices. While I sit in traffic, I call my mom to check in.

scheduling interviews for front office staff at my other location. I'm reviewing resumes sent to me by HR, scheduling first round interviews, and figuring out when we might be able to have applicants come in.

8:15 a.m. Check in with my staff –

3 p.m. I decide to get ahead and work

including providers, nurses and front office staff. I walk around the practice checking for any major issues, making sure our schedules look good for the day, and touch base with our medical director.

10 a.m. I have been investigating

insurance issues and making sure our billing and coding for office visits is on target. I also run my weekly reports. After all my reports are done, I call over to my other two offices to check in, make sure there are no urgent needs and try to address any emails. My inbox tends to fill quickly during the day so I try and combat it.

through the next few weeks of staffing schedules. This can be a struggle with so many different sites, different schedules, providers taking time off and staff wanting time off. It's a challenge, and it's like working on a 500-piece puzzle.

5 p.m. Woohoo! It’s the end of the day, and time to rush over to Orange Theory for my dose of exercise.

EVENING 6:30 p.m. Kevin has picked up the

kids from school. I head outside to let our three chickens out of their coop for a little

and Austen... the worst part of our day/ night. Several bathroom trips, tucking both kids in (at least four to five times) and the process seems to go on forever. Each girl has their own quirks and it is mentally and physically exhausting.

8 p.m. Bedtime is still going -- Kevin

and I, at this point, have given our fair share of hugs and kisses, tucked in both girls at least 10 times now, and have told them both to be quiet and rest. Austen is currently singing "Old McDonald had a Farm" to her Pooh Bear toy and Harper is asking for us to tuck her in... again... we're at the 11th time now. I wonder if I'm the only mom who has kids that are this hard to get to bed.

8:30 p.m. Silence -- we did it! Both

girls are finally in bed. Kevin and I watch "The Office" or "Parks and Recreation" on re-run and chat about our day. We figure out our plan for the next day including who has meetings after work, who will drop off and pick up the kids, and thoughts on what our weekend plans will be. I grab a glass of wine from our wine cabinet and relax.

9:30 p.m. I've fallen asleep on our

couch, a nightly ritual at our house. I'm on one end, and Mick is on the other. I'm not sure which of us snores the loudest, but Kevin says it's a tie.

10:30 p.m. Kevin wakes me up off the couch and tells me it is time to go to bed. I let the dog out, crawl into bed, set my alarm, and off to sleep... again. 4:45 a.m. comes early.

NEW FEATURE!

We all know that the hardest job you can have is being a mom! The days are definitely long and the years are astonishingly short, and some days you might feel like you’re going through the struggles alone. But, we are here to share with you that in the rise of technology and “life hacks,” there are a lot of tools and gadgets out there that can make being a mom a little less stressful! Check out the gadgets our Giggle moms can’t live without!

Gadgets We Can't Live Without "My Owlet was by far my favorite item we had! I was actually able to sleep knowing it was tracking her heart rate and oxygen levels."

"When you have to pumpthese bags [Medela Quick Clean Micro Steam Bags] were so great to quickly sanitize your pump parts daily!"

- LONDON CROMWELL

- LINDSAY RODRIGUEZ “Our baby monitor. Video with really great night vision and even plays music.” Our Tula carrier and Boba wrap! Lifesaver with first baby, essential with second baby and trying to chase around a toddler! Love our carriers! - CARLIE SCHREINER

"Baby Brezza!!....oh and sandwich bags for those dirty diapers and clothes when you're on the go.”

“A tablet. When he [her son] is acting his worst and I need to calm him down, I take out the tablet and he sits on the bed and plays his games and it calms him down tremendously. I only take it out when he starts screaming and crying.”

- BETSY LANGAN

-LOURDES ROCHA

- KARA THOMAS

Being a mom is TOUGH! No doubt about it! So, naturally, a common response to gadgets our Giggle readers can’t live without was a wine bottle opener! Accompanied by more mommy friends that love wine and supporting and lifting each other up!

mom's corner | moms tell all

NEW FEATURE!

momstellall

All moms have that dreaded moment when your child throws themselves on the floor and completely loses their mind – in public! Though you may think it’s the end of the world in the moment, it will definitely become a funny story to tell in the long run. Our Giggle moms share where their toddler lost it and why, in this edition of Moms Tell-All!

Where Was Your Toddler's Worst Meltdown & Why?

KELLY WYNNS: “My girl recently lost her cool because she didn’t want her waffle cut into squares!!!”

SUZY CARLISLE: “Where did my toddler NOT have a meltdown is the real question... Once I had to carry a screaming 3-yearold, Emarie, football-style out of Pink Narcissus because she had a massive meltdown in the store. The reason? They didn’t have her size in the Lilly Pulitzer McKim sandals she wanted.”

18

NICOLE TAFT: “My son and I frequent UF Shands medical plaza for specialists. Donovan is almost 2 years old and uses a small, modifier bumbo seat wheel chair. One day, he was having a blast rolling around their floors in the lobby. I told him let’s go, we are leaving and he started yelling, “NOOOOOOO, NOOOO!” He would roll his wheels forward very dramatic and then collapse his arms and upper half of his body down. Everyone is of course staring and equally telling me how cute he was. I had to carry him, his chair and his stuff, plus my coffee to the parking garage!

GIGGLEMAGAZINE.COM | JUNE/JULY 2019

CARYN TABOR: “My boy lost it when I told him his favorite babysitter was getting married, while baking the cake for her bridal shower!” STEPHANIE FRANK: “In the middle of Target, my fiery little red head (3 years old) threw a massive tantrum. Trying to climb out of the cart, me trying to hold her in so she wouldn’t fall, screaming at the top of her lungs, tears, the whole shebang. Three different moms laughed at it and said they understood and had been there before. Even after I left the store, it continued the whole way home in the car, a total tantrum time of 45 minutes. The reason for the tantrum... she wanted to hold my hand (which she didn’t say at any point during her tantrum). Carrying her younger sister (about 10 months old at the time) and pushing the shopping cart didn’t leave me with any free hands either.” MEGHAN HENEHAN: “In the middle of Disney World.... laying on the ground in front of the 'It's a Small World' ride. It was amazing.”

Illustrations by Grace Downey.

APRIL TISHER: “Andrew, 18 months old. Had the worst meltdown ever on a plane from Atlanta to Gainesville. It was the worst. We didn’t fly again until he was 6.”

LAURA HOLLEY: “After 18 months of obnoxiously bragging that my child was perfect and that I could “take her anywhere” she showed her true colors. We were at a restaurant on Hilton Head Island and the server brought her food, which included smiley-faced French fries. We think they may have scared her. She lost her mind and threw them at the server. Then began to grab whatever else she could find. Someone at a nearby table thanked their child for “not acting like that.” We took our food to go and stayed in the house for a solid 6 months after.”

As a mom, you quite literally do it all! Between working and making sure your kiddo gets to school with a matching pair of shoes, it proves to be the toughest job anyone could do. Our Giggle moms have shared with us what makes them a #BossMom, and we are all for it!

Cassandra Polcaro Cassandra Polcaro is a mom who showcases the definition of a #BossMom while balancing life, school and her son. At 28 years old, and with a 2-year-old son Wesley, by her side, Cassandra recently finished her associates degree and currently is enrolled at the University of Florida where she expects to complete her bachelors degree.

When Cassandra is not bartending at Lillian’s Music Store in downtown Gainesville, she enjoys being a mom to Wesley. She shared that her favorite part about being a mom is knowing that she is creating happy childhood memories for her son, and thinking about when he will look back on them one day. Being a mom is no easy job, but at the end of the day, Cassandra has some fun to look forward to. “My favorite thing to do with my son is run around and be silly before winding down at night,” she said. “No matter how bad the day might have been, it’s always better when you end it with lots of laughs.”

DAD TO KEZIAH (9), KAI (7) AND KEILANI (3) What is the best part about being a dad? Being able to watch my children grow into whom God created them to be.

What is the hardest part about being a dad? The hardest part about being a dad is having patience at times with them and being understanding.

Do you have any special “dad” routines?

Every night when my kids go to bed I hug them, pray over them and put anointing oil on their foreheads to protect them from “nightmares.”

What part of parenting scares you the most?

Not knowing who they will become in this world, even though my wife and I try our best to instill the right morals and values. We want the best for them and we pray they take heed to everything we teach them. We pray they know the Lord as adults.

Photos by SincerelyGone Photography.

What is your most memorable “dad” moment?

My most memorable moment has to be three times, when Keziah, Kai and Keilani were born. Seeing them come into this world and holding them for the first time, is my most memorable “dad” moment; God entrusted me to care for them.

What is your favorite family outing?

Hands down my most favorite outing is when we go to theme parks, we have so much fun there. From Volcano Bay, Aquatica, Islands of Adventure, Universal to Magic Kingdom. We love traveling any opportunity we have.

IN THE WORDS OF WIFE, KRISTINA "On days that I work, [Obadiah] does everything from cooking, cleaning, even our daughters' hair. He is a role model to our son and in the community... [plus] he is a hottie with a six pack!"

Which TV or Movie dad is most like you? I would have to say Damon Wayans, from the show, “My Wife and Kids.” His humor and love for his family are similar qualities of what I try to portray.

What is your go-to breakfast?

My go-to breakfast would be my famous grits and eggs with sausage and some jelly bread.

Who was/is your biggest influence on your parenting style?

I would have to say God and my grandfather, who is no longer with me. He passed away this year, in April 2019. He was an amazing man of God. He taught me not only to love the Lord with all your heart, but also how to be a father. It’s not just about working to provide, there’s a lot more to it than that.

I have become a better man through my relationship with God, because of him I am the man that I am today. God’s word taught me how to love, to be patient and much more. God taught me how to be a father to my children! I can’t say I get everything right, but I know with God, He makes me better!

What is your favorite show to bingewatch?

My favorite show would be “My Wife and Kids” or “Dragon Ball Z.”

If you could have one super power what would it be?

If I had one super power it would have to be having the ability to read minds. With that power, I could get insight on how or why people think.

DAD TO KATHRYN (9) What is the best part about being a dad? Watching her do something she once thought was too hard.

What is the hardest part about being a dad?

Allowing my daughter to fail and determining if /when to step in and help. I want her to learn to be resilient by adapting to setbacks, but I also hate to see her struggle.

Do you have any special “dad” routines? Storytime at night – I retell movies (mostly 80s action flicks) as a series of bedtime stories.

What part of parenting scares you the most?

She’s always watching and listening to my wife and I, using us as examples…so reacting poorly to something on a bad day can have a long-lasting impact.

What is your most memorable “dad” moment?

Which TV or Movie dad is most like you? Tim Allen – Last Man Standing

Do you have a special activity that you do with your kid?

UF’s Family Fishing days – catching some blue gills!

What is your go-to breakfast?

“Daddy-Daughter Donut Day,” every couple of weeks at Donut Connection.

IN THE WORDS OF WIFE, ERIN "[Jason] takes [Kathryn] to school everyday and treats her to daddydaughter donut days once a month... They are best friends and watching their relationship grow is what makes him such a HOT dad!"

Photos by SincerelyGone Photography.

Going on a neighborhood “safari” walk through our neighborhood at the time - Suburban Heights. We kept a list of everything we saw such as different birds, dogs and squirrels. Kathryn kept hoping we’d see a snake that day, as we’d seen some racers from time to time. As we were nearing the end of the walk, I was looking up in the trees for hawks when Kathryn said, “There’s a snake, Daddy!” I looked down to see a brightly colored snake about six feet ahead, slithering directly in our path. After stopping dead in our tracks, I looked closer and confirmed that the red bands were touching the yellow bands!

DAD TO BRIELLA (2) AND BRADLEY (ARRIVING IN JUNE 2019!) What is the best part about being a dad? The relationship and experiences I get to create with my children.

What is the hardest part about being a dad?

Sadly, learning how to put Briella’s clothes on correctly. I’ve never encountered so many buttons, straps and different types of clothing in my life. My wife and Briella find my struggles quite entertaining.

Do you have any special “dad” routines? Whenever Briella sees me she says, “Daddy, run!” which is her way of telling me to chase her around the house. It doesn’t matter the time of day or what I’m doing. After endlessly chasing her, it’s only a matter of time before she asks for a piggyback ride. When my wife works on Saturday’s, we have our daddydaughter dates. I often push her around the neighborhood in her pink trike while listening to our acoustic music playlist. Lastly, each night before bed I cuddle with her and read a book before my wife and I lay her down.

IN THE WORDS OF WIFE, GIGI

Photos by SincerelyGone Photography.

"[Scott] dances with his daughter in the living room, makes up songs for her, cooks her special meals and dresses her up in her cutest outfits. He truly treats her like a princess."

Who was/is your biggest influence on your parenting style?

My mom and dad. My mom was the most selfless and loving person. She taught me to not only be there as a parent for my children but also as a best friend. My dad taught me how to be cool and collected. He also taught me the importance of working hard to provide for my family.

What is your funniest parent moment so far?

One day I taught Briella to say “Wuzzzzzupppp!” after I say “Hey, yo Bri Bri!” Later, in the week, my wife was home napping her and heard the monitor go off. It was Briella, continuously saying “Wuzzzzuppppp!” to herself over and over until she finally fell asleep.

What is your go-to breakfast?

Scrambled eggs with melted cheese.

What is your favorite family outing? Any outdoor activity!

DAD TO BLAKE (8), SETH (6) AND CHASE (4) What is the best part about being a dad? Having people that love you unconditionally and come to you for guidance. Also, with 3 boys I’ll always have someone around to watch sports with.

What is the hardest part about being a dad?

Never having a dull moment. With three small boys, someone always needs something. There is very little downtime. Thank God for early bedtimes!

What part of parenting scares you the most? If any of my kids enroll at FSU! Go Gators!

What is your funniest parent moment so far?

Do you have a special activity that you do with your kid(s)? I enjoy taking them to Gators sporting events.

What is your go-to breakfast?

I commute to Ocala four days a week, for work. The employees at the Dunkin’ Donuts on my way to Ocala probably know my order of hot medium coffee and wake-up wrap by heart.

What is your favorite family vacation?

We love to stay in cabins and go off the beaten path. The farther we are from other people the less likely we are to disturb the neighbors!

When my oldest son was five, we went to the beach for the weekend. When he told me that he had to pee, I told him to go ahead and pee in the ocean. A moment later I was talking with my wife and heard laughter from some other people. I glanced over and saw my son standing on the beach with his pants around his ankles peeing into the ocean. I guess I should have been more specific when I told him what to do!

What is the hardest part about being a dad? Sometimes letting your kids make mistakes so that they can learn for themselves.

Do you have any special “dad” routines? Getting Carter ready for bed – pajamas, brushing his teeth and reading books.

DAD TO BENNET (5) AND TRUMAN (3) What is the best part about being a dad? I love seeing their curiosity about the world and answering their “why?” questions.

What is the hardest part about being a dad? Keeping up with their limitless energy, balancing work, family and personal interests and supporting my wife.

Do you have any special “dad” routines? Giving them baths and letting them pick the songs we listen to during that time. Unfortunately we listen to a lot of "Baby Shark."

What is your most memorable “dad” moment?

The moment my sons were delivered and the doctors lifted them up – seeing and hearing them for the first time – that memory still gets to me. You realize, then, your life has a much bigger purpose; you’ve got to prepare the way for them.

Who was/is your biggest influence on your parenting style?

What is your funniest parent moment so far?

Trying to change a “blowout” diaper in an airplane bathroom, holding the baby on the table with one hand, holding the door open with one foot, and trying to get my wife’s attention for a change of clothes that I’d forgotten to bring in with me.

Do you have a special activity that you do with your kids? I like taking them out in the stroller for a run on weekend mornings. We get to enjoy being outside together and sometimes they even run a little while with me.

I love American history and always admired Theodore Roosevelt as a father. He taught his children a love of sports and the outdoors, books and being moral people. DAD TO ETHAN (10) AND CAMILA (3) What is the best part about being a dad?

The feeling of true and unconditional love – the type of love that only being a parent can inspire. (Not that I don’t truly love my wife, and my mom and my family…but with your kids it’s just different.)

What is the hardest part about being a dad?

The fact that you worry constantly, even when they’re completely fine. And also, having to saying “no” because its for their own good.

Do you have any special “dad” routines? I’m known as the breakfast king – so on the weekends, I make my signature pancakes and eggs, which are the kids’ favorite.

What is your most memorable “dad” moment?

IN THE WORDS OF WIFE, LAURA

Photos by SincerelyGone Photography and Nikki Rinc Photography.

"[Waldemar] has had his nails painted, had slumber parties with Minnie Mouse and Olaf... or busted into a 'floss' move with Ethan, just to see their smiles."

Holding Camila for the first time. She came after several attempts with IVF, and for a while there, we weren’t sure if we were going to be able to have her. Ethan came into my life when he was almost 2 years old, so I never got to experience the feeling of holding him as a newborn. I’ll never forget that feeling – there may have been ugly tears.

What is your funniest parent moment so far?

When Ethan was around 3 or 4 years old, he went on a huge Harry Potter kick. Around home, I’ve always been known as “Waldy” or “Papi,” so I don’t think Ethan ever knew my full name. One afternoon, Laura was trying to call me and I couldn’t hear her so after a few times of trying “Waldy,” she yelled out “Waldemar!” Ethan was in the hallway and came running out and said, “Mom! Don’t call him that…. he’s not the dark lord!” To this day we all remember the ‘Waldemort episode’ and laugh!

Do you have a special activity that you do with your kid(s)?

Camping is probably the biggest one. Laura had no interest in getting an RV, but I really wanted our kids to have these childhood memories of our camping in different places. GIGGLEMAGAZINE.COM | JUNE/JULY 2019

JOHN "PIERCE" SENKARIK Assistant State Attorney

DAD TO JOHN BARRETT (3) AND COLIN (NEWBORN) What is the best part about being a dad? Having the love and support that being a family man brings. I’ve got my wife and my two boys that keep me grounded and they remind me of what’s really important.

What is the hardest part about being a dad?

The most difficult thing for me is making time for my family and ensuring they are my priority. Life gets busy, but being present and in the moment with my family is something I make a conscious effort to do.

What is your most memorable “dad” moment?

After Colin was born, Barret came to visit in the hospital. I talked him through what he should do as a big brother, and he told me he was going to be the best brother because he loves his baby brother so much. That was a great moment.

Who was/is your biggest influence on your parenting style?

Which TV or movie dad is most like you?

That’s difficult to answer, since I’m not up to speed on my pop culture. I always liked Uncle Phil from “The Fresh Prince of BelAir.” He cared deeply about his family, even his nephew, and made no apologies about giving his family the best life he could through his hard work.

Do you have a special activity that you do with your kid(s)? Barrett and I like to roughhouse quite a bit. It’s good to get down on the floor with him and hear him laugh when he’s getting tickled or trying to climb all over me. That’s also a great way for him to expend some energy at the end of the day.

My dad is a big one. Seeing how he handled the controlled chaos of four boys in the house was impressive. Also, I had a Sergeant Major when I was in the Army that epitomized “stern but fair” and always led by example. If I can be like either of them then I’m doing all right.

Summer At Sea! Seafood Dishes That Are Kid & Mom Approved

2. Add the shrimp, garlic and

BY AMANDA ROLAND

Seafood is a superfood! It is packed with nutrients and healthy fats, like the omega-3 you can find in salmon, that keep you full all day long, and it is a great source of energy for your little rascals. However, sometimes it seems impossible to serve seafood to your children without them turning up their nose. Here are a few seafood recipes that are sure to have your kiddos screaming for more!

Sophisticated Fish Sticks

This is a twist on those boring fish sticks you find in the frozen section. For glutenfree households, use shredded coconut instead of breadcrumbs for a crunchy coating that tastes just as good! You can serve these fish sticks with your kids’ favorite veggies like roasted carrots or green beans. 1 large egg, beaten 2 cups panko breadcrumbs (or shredded, unsweetened coconut) 2 tablespoons oil of choice 1 tablespoon seasoning of choice (i.e. Old Bay) 1 1/2 pounds tilapia fillets, cut into wide strips 1 teaspoon of olive oil Coarse salt and ground pepper

Directions 1. Heat oven to 475˚F, and line

your baking sheets with aluminum foil.

2. Pour the beaten egg in a medium

bowl and season with salt and pepper. Put your fish coating, seasoning and oil in a separate bowl and mix. Dip your fish strips into the egg, shake off the excess and then dip the strip into the fish coating, pressing it onto the

34

fish, so that it sticks. Place each fish stick onto the baking sheets about an inch apart from each other.

3. Bake the fish in the oven until

they are lightly brown for about 13 minutes. Rotate your baking sheets after 5 minutes to ensure even cooking. Serve your fish sticks with dipping sauces and veggies. Enjoy!

Spaghetti with Bacon and Shrimp

Most kids love pasta, so this might be an easy one for them to enjoy. It is a simple spaghetti dish with the addition of bacon and shrimp to give it flavor. The taste of bacon can mask the shrimp if you have some picky eaters, and you could even add-in other family favorites like peas or cherry tomatoes to give this dish some color.

Ingredients

2 strips bacon, chopped 6 scallions, chopped 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 12 ounces spaghetti 8 ounces large peeled and deveined frozen shrimp, thawed and halved horizontally 2 garlic cloves, minced Coarse salt and ground pepper

Directions 1. Bring a large pot of water to boil, and cook the pasta to preference.

GIGGLEMAGAZINE.COM | JUNE/JULY 2019

scallions to the skillet and cook until the shrimp turn pink. Now, add the cup of reserved pasta water to the skillet and cook until it comes to a boil.

3. Add the shrimp mixture, bacon,

and lemon juice to the cooked pasta and toss to combine. Top with some Parmesan cheese and enjoy!

Simple Salmon Burgers

This version of a hand-held classic sneaks some omega-3’s into your kid’s diet! Burgers are easy to make and easy to eat, making them the perfect weeknight meal. Season your salmon burgers however you’d like, and pair them with some sweet potato fries or oven-baked potato chips.

Ingredients

1 pound salmon fillet ½ cup panko bread crumbs (or almond meal for a gluten-free option) 1 egg, beaten ½ cup chopped yellow onion ½ cup chopped, dried red pepper ½ teaspoons salt ½ teaspoon pepper

Directions 1. Remove the skin from the fish and

finely chop the salmon. Add salmon and remaining ingredients to a bowl, and combine. Form the mixture into 4 patties that are ½ an inch thick.

2. Heat a skillet to medium heat, and

cook burgers about 4 minutes on each side until the center feels firm.

3. Serve the burgers on your choice of bun and top with your favorite toppings. Enjoy!

While the pasta is cooking, fry the bacon in a skillet and set aside to cool on a paper towel. When the pasta is done, reserve a cup of pasta water and drain the pasta.

Welcome to Florida, where the sun shines bright (on most days), and many summers are spent at family barbecues by the pool. Tips FOR CLEANING YOUR GRILL

SOUTHERN BARBECUE SAUCES BY STATE The term barbecue is the technique of cooking meat outdoors over fire. Southern barbecue is the makeup of traditions from the southern states, and is often what we eat at typical barbecue restaurants. While there are many different styles and traditions, here are the more commonly known barbecue sauces by states in the south!

GEORGIA Georgia-style barbecue is known for its thin sauce, which is similar to Carolina-style barbecue. The Georgia sauce, however, uses more tomatoes than the Carolina sauces. Both are savory and tasty on your meat!

TEXAS Texas has four different types of barbecue styles roughly due to its size. East Texan’s enjoy their barbecue in a tomato-based sauce. Its bordering country Mexico inspires south Texan barbecue sauce and cooking.

NORTH CAROLINA This type of barbecue is known for vinegar! Yes, you heard that right; a spicy vinegar-based sauce is added to this cooking style.

SOUTH CAROLINA This barbecue style is definitely different from its neighboring state, because it uses a sauce that is much sweeter and tangier. South Carolina barbecue uses a mustard-based sauce to add some flavor to their meat.

ALABAMA Barbecue in Alabama is sometimes referred to as the “White BBQ,” because of its mayonnaise-based sauce. This sauce is both tangy and creamy and it accompanies the various meets in an Alabama barbecue like grilled chicken, fish, burgers, and of course, pulled pork.

TENNESSEE Memphis defines the barbecue style in Tennessee. Pork is the main staple here and you can get it dry or wet. Dry means spices and herbs to flavor the meat before smoking, and wet means that they are doused in barbecue sauce, which is tomato-based.

KENTUCKY Kentucky barbecue varies across the state, but it’s also popular for one specific barbecue and that’s mutton, or more commonly known as sheep! You can find pork barbecue popular in east and west Kentucky, and across the state you will find a vinegar-based sauce like the one in North Carolina!

health | get healthy The method of hiding tablets or opening capsules and sprinkling the contents in pudding, smoothies, yogurt or applesauce can work, but it can backfire as well. If your child doesn’t consume all of it then they won’t get the full dosage. You also have to make sure it is an extended release capsule that won’t affect the dosage delivery. Other strategies to make dosing children go smoothly, include a reward system for agreeing to take it drama-free. Try giving older children some sense of control by allowing them to choose their flavor or method, my youngest never liked liquid medication so she opted for tablets from a young age and by varying the delivery method.

Does a Spoonful of Sugar Really Help the Medicine Go Down? BY APRIL TISHER

The answer is yes, it probably does. Let’s face it, kids usually don’t want to stop what they are doing long enough to eat meals, so asking them to take medicine, which usually doesn't taste very good, is an even bigger challenge. However, medications are sometimes necessary, so what can we do to make it easier on everyone? We all remember the pink bubble gum tasting medicine of our youth. Yes, that’s still around, but there are also other, new and improved alternatives. Most retail pharmacies give you the option of flavor add-ins for your liquid medications (for an additional cost of approximately $3, which is not always covered by your prescription insurance plan). Publix and Walgreens pharmacies offer the FLAVORx brand that indicates they are dye-free, sugarfree, gluten-free, diabetes-safe and hypoallergenic with flavor choices such as: apple, orange, banana, watermelon and grape just to name a few. Jessica Jonas, PharmD, with Walgreens Pharmacy, explained that while using juice or applesauce to help children take their medication is sometimes beneficial, you

42

should always check with your provider first because some medications lose their integrity when combined with acidic beverages or calcium containing foods. She also advised in always asking your pharmacist or doctor before crushing or breaking medication that may be extended or sustained release medications. Those type of medications can “dose dump” when they are broken and cause overdoses or inadequate dosing in children. Instead, Jonas said you should ask your pharmacist when picking your Rx (or even over-thecounter medicines) if the dosage can be cut or crushed for easier dosing. Then write those “yes or no” instructions on the bottle itself so that you will remember later when you are trying to treat a fever in the middle of the night.

GIGGLEMAGAZINE.COM | JUNE/JULY 2019

Maybe your child doesn’t like the look of the syringe and would be more comfortable drinking it from a dosing cup where they have control over how fast it comes out. Allowing them to drink an otherwise prohibited beverage only to take their medicine with, can entice them. I knew a tween who wasn’t allowed to drink Coke, except when she took her required daily seizure medication.

Sprinkling the contents of a medicine capsule into food can backfire if your child does not consume all of it for the full dosage. The most important thing is that however it happens, your child receives the proper medication as it has been prescribed. Start out with a positive attitude and have your child listen to their doctor’s instructions about why it is important to take the medicine. That might stop any problems from the start! *Always check with your pediatrician before trying new methods of delivering medications.

Broad-Spectrum

Sun Protectors:

Protect Your Child from the Sun’s Harmful Rays BY JENNIFER JENSEN

Nestled in the middle of the sunshine state, Gainesville provides plenty of opportunities for people to enjoy the outdoors. But, parents have to be careful about sun exposure and make sure they are protecting their children, especially infants. Nothing dampens a great day spent outside more than being stuck with a terrible, painful sunburn. And, sunburns can also lead to skin blistering, chills, fevers, headaches and overall sun damage, which typically occurs during childhood, said Dr. Maria Kelly, pediatrician and medical director of UF Health Pediatrics-Tioga.

Infants less than 6 months old should avoid direct sunlight because they are extremely susceptible to sunburns. Parents should place infants under the shade of a tree, an umbrella, their stroller or car seat canopy. Clothing can also be used to decrease sun exposure. This can be lightweight clothing or a cover-up to cover the arms and wide brimmed hats to protect the face and neck. Dr. Kelly said parents can apply a small amount of sunscreen with a minimum SPF 15 to infants who are less than 6 months old to smaller exposed areas, including the face and extremities, if shade is not available. Parents need to keep in mind that sunscreen can take up to 30 minutes to be truly effective, she added. Older infants and children should also try to avoid direct sunlight, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. because this when

44

the sun’s rays are the strongest. If they will be exposed to sunlight during that time, they can also use protective clothing or sunscreen. Kelly suggested purchasing clothing that offers additional sun protection, which is labeled with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF). Sunglasses with UPF protection are also recommended for infants and children during periods of sun exposure.

Thinkbaby Sunscreen Stick: SPF 30 $8.99, gothinkbaby.com

Parents also need to remember that sun protection is not just important on a sunny day. The sun’s rays can reflect from sand, water, snow and concrete. And they should beware of cloudy days as well. “These harmful rays, up to 80%, can still penetrate through clouds on an overcast day, so sun protection is essential even when it is cloudy outside,” Kelly said. Kelly suggested using a water-resistant sunscreen and reapplying every two hours and again after swimming or sweating. If children

are continuously swimming, sunscreen should be applied every 30 minutes. Make sure you liberally cover every area that is exposed, including the feet and face, avoiding the eyelids. “Most sunscreens work by absorbing, reflecting or scattering sunlight,” Kelly said. “When choosing a sunscreen, it is important to look for the words ‘broad-spectrum’ on the label.” This ensures the sunscreen will protect against the sun’s ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B rays. She also suggested parents select a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. Anything above SPF 50 has minimal additional benefits, she said. And while parents should look for ones with zinc oxide in it, they should steer clear of those with the chemical oxybenzone.

TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF TO WITH

“It should be avoided as this chemical has been shown to have undesired hormonal properties,” Kelly said. It has also been known to cause allergic skin reactions.

When choosing a sunscreen, it is important to look for the words ‘broad-spectrum’ on the label. If your child does end up getting a sunburn, you will know six to 12 hours after sun exposure, Kelly said. The greatest time of discomfort for your little one will be during the first 24 hours. Kelly suggested avoiding any home remedies for sunburns and stick to cool compresses, cool baths, additional fluids and moisturizing creams, such as aloe vera. For painful sunburns, parents can relieve the pain with medication, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. If a child receives a sunburn that is blistering, the child is in severe pain or has a fever, they should contact their pediatrician, Kelly said. “Opening blisters from a sunburn can result in infection so this should be avoided,” Kelly said. “Infants and children with sunburns should avoid sun exposure until the sunburn is fully healed.” Parents should encourage day cares and schools to adopt sun protective policies and discuss their children being allowed to use sunscreen, sunglasses and hats while outdoors. They should also discuss any concerns they have about sun protection with their pediatrician.

Move Out, Measles! BY TRACY WRIGHT

The United States is experiencing a measles outbreak and has broken the record number of measles cases since the vaccination since the disease was declared eliminated in 2000. The number of cases of measles is already the highest it’s been since 1994, with 22 states, including Florida, reporting cases. The primary hub of these cases has been in New York City where cases occurred among unvaccinated people in Orthodox Jewish communities, according to CNBC News. These outbreaks were associated with travelers who brought measles back from Israel, where a large outbreak is occurring. Other reasons for the increased cases include a growing number of parents in certain communities where anti-vaccine activists have spread false facts about the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine, leading to doubt or hesitancy of parents who are choosing for their children. Since measles is a highly contagious disease, it spreads quickly, especially among unvaccinated or immune-compromised people like young children and the elderly. Giving babies and children their recommended vaccinations helps to protect communities from these types of diseases, hence why many doctors and schools recommend your child gets certain vaccinations before starting the school

year or being out in public. Immunity occurs in the human body when it starts to produce antibodies to respond to foreign germs that have entered. By destroying the germs that make you sick, they help you get better faster and also remain in your blood stream by protecting you from a future infection. Childhood vaccines work to protect people by injecting these same types of germs from potentially deadly diseases that have been killed or weakened, so they won’t actually make you sick. This allows the human body to produce antibodies that protects it from contracting the disease in the future. According to the Immunization Partnership, “the measles vaccine is among the most effective vaccines,” with a 97% success rate from those who have received the two recommended doses, and 93% effective for those who have only received one dose. In the past 10 to 15 years, claims of vaccinations being linked to autism or having other adverse effects have led many parents to stop or delay vaccinations

against potentially deadly childhood diseases. However, science has not proven there to be any direct link to autism or other conditions. Between 2011 and 2018, more than 25 major studies published in medical journals have been conducted to examine whether vaccinations had an adverse effect on health, including autism. Thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative used to prevent contamination of multidose vials of vaccines, was an ingredient of concern to many that used to be found in vaccinations. Research shows that thimerosal does not cause autism spectrum

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) strongly recommends parents vaccinate their children. “Claims that vaccines are linked to autism, or are unsafe when administered according to the recommended schedule, have been disproven by a robust body of medical literature. Delaying vaccines only leaves a child at risk of disease. Vaccines keep communities healthy, and protect some of the most vulnerable in our society, including the elderly, and children who are too young to be vaccinated or have compromised immune systems.” Florida requires that children have a certain set of vaccinations before entering preschool, which includes diphtheria tetanus and acellular pertussis (DTaP), inactivated polio vaccine (IPV), MMR, varicella (chickenpox), hepatitis B (Hep B) and haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib). To enter elementary school, children are

!

required to have had four or five doses of DTaP, four or five doses of IPV, two doses of MMR, three doses of Hep B, one tetanus diphtheria and acellular pertussis (Tdap) and two doses of varicella. To enter middle school, children should have a booster of Tdap.

American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP):

The AAP understands that parents want the best for their child, so they urge pediatricians and parents to have open and healthy conversations about vaccination concerns. Parents should never feel hesitant to discuss any questions they may have about safety issues and the Henry Ford Health Institute encourages them to explore medically sound research on the topic.

The Hobby You Didn’t Know You Needed! BY AMANDA ROLAND | PICTURES COURTESY OF SHIRLEY BAKER, BRITNEY ESCOBEDO AND STACEY STEINBERG

Knitting is back and better than ever. This hobby that you may have learned as a child but quickly forgot, could be the pastime you need to help calm anxiety, reduce stress, increase brain function and so much more. With a few materials and some patience, you will impress your friends and yourself with your new knitting skills and you can get your little one started and knit through the summer, together!

You'll need to gather your materials. Knitting is done with two kitting needles and yarn. It’s important to find needles that are comfortable for you and that will be easy to learn with. Many beginning knitters use bamboo needles because they allow the yarn to stick to the needle to prevent dropping stitches.

Local knitters!

I really like knitting because it eases my mind and allows me to just sit and relax without thinking too much about my other stresses in life. - BRITNEY ESCOBEDO

I started knitting about seven years ago. I went to Seattle to visit my dad who was in a rehab center for a while, and I knew I needed something to do. So, my best friend from high school taught me to knit and I spent the week practicing. Haven’t stopped since! - SHIRLEY BAKER

Patterns

Learning common knitting abbreviations early on can save you some trouble in the future. When you start reading patterns, you will need to know what the different abbreviations mean. Start with the basic stitch abbreviations like k, KB1, p and PB1 so that you can start navigating patterns and creating masterpieces.

When it comes to yarn...

Soon you’ll have a pattern and your knitting materials in hand to become the next family knitter!

Stay away from the glittery, fancy yarn for now, and stick with a basic, light colored yarn until you have more practice. More advanced yarn can pull and snag which could get in the way as you master the technique.

Over time, jewelry can start to look dull, tarnished and dirty. However, there are simple, affordable remedies to get your jewelry looking good as new- and keep it that way!

DIY

Jewelry Shine BY CAROLINE STROGIS

SERIOUSLY TARNISHED JEWELRY

PEARLS

Soak your dull jewelry or diamonds in a cup of warm water mixed with one tablespoon of dish soap. Mix the soap and water until bubbles form, and then soak the jewelry in the solution for three to four minutes. You can also softly brush the jewelry with a soft bristle toothbrush.

A mixture of a tablespoon of salt, baking soda and dish soap respectively, with one cup of water microwaved at two minutes, is a stronger solution. Put the warm water mixture in a bowl and place your jewelry on a sheet of aluminum foil in the bowl. Let it soak for five to 10 minutes, then rinse with cool water.

Mix a small amount of mild dish soap with lukewarm water. Then, dip a soft cleaning cloth and wipe your pearls. It is advised not to submerge a pearl necklace in water! You should also wipe your pearls with a dry, soft cloth after every wear for prevention of any dirt buildup.

There are also affordable products available online or in-store that cut out assembly time and get right to work. Cleaners, sprays, wipes and cloths can be used to instantly spot-clean jewelry for the night as you’re getting ready, or to quickly and effectively clean your entire collection.

Once your jewelry is looking good as new, there are steps you can take to prolong the newfound shine and keep your jewelry cleaner for a longer time. Proper storage of your jewelry is key. Exposure to moisture and sunlight will wear down your jewels quickly. It is a good idea to dry off jewels before storing them. When storing them, you can even place them in a bag with anti-tarnish strips that absorbs the surrounding moisture.

Navigating Life When Mom and Kiddo are Both in School! BY APRIL TISHER

My mom went back to school to get her RN degree when I was a child, so I remember us both at the kitchen table studying. The slow cooker was her best friend and her study groups came over to our house on weekends. We even graduated from college during the same year! Now as a mom myself, I can better understand the hardships she faced, and I often wonder how she managed to do it all. Going to college as a young adult without a family to be responsible for has its own challenges; but doing it when you are older (albet it wiser) and have a home and children to care for is a different experience all together! Time management and a strong support system is a must, but how do real mom’s handle it in today’s world? Going back to school as an adult definitely has its advantages. You’re usually pretty confident of what you want to do with your degree, have more defined goals and self-discipline. You most likely have a plan of how you can pay for it and a better idea of what it will mean for your career. It has its disadvantages as well. The worries about how it will impact your family and home life are a top concern. It will mean an adjustment for everyone’s routines. You have to decide if the benefits outweigh the consequences. In many cases they do! More parents than ever before have taken the plunge and gone back to the classroom! Krista Ott is a single mom to an 8-year-old, William, and the current fire and life safety coordinator for the City of Gainesville. After receiving her bachelor’s degree over 10 years ago, she decided to go back to school to receive her master’s degree in Emergency Management and Disaster Preparedness. Ott explains that the fire department is the lead agency for emergency management so furthering her education is a bonus for her employer. In fact, she said it is the city’s “Tuition Reimbursement” program that was a main factor in her moving ahead with going back to school in the first place.

66

Another main factor was the ability to obtain her master’s degree online. “It’s a lifesaver,” Ott stresses, “between my work schedule and William’s activities, attending traditional classes wasn’t possible. The online option means I can do my school work from home on a flexible schedule.” Krista says her number one piece of advice to other mom’s considering going back to school is to, “Be prepared to reprioritize your life.” Things that used to be super important to her, like making sure all the dishes were put away before going to bed, are no longer her top priority. Now, she says, “Before going to bed I have to make sure my assignment has been turned in. The dishes will still be there in the morning to put away.” Another piece of advice she gives is that there is never a perfect time to go back to school. “I kept thinking I would go back after I got married, after my son was born, after he started kindergarten, etc., but life just kept happening. There is no good time, you just have to make it happen.” Ott says she did worry about how her returning to class might negatively impact her son, but just the opposite has happened. She said he is excited to hear about what she is learning. He is witnessing adults learning

A Sensible Summer:

Home Schooling Doesn’t Have to Stop BY CRYSTAL LADWIG, PH.D.

With most parents and children in Alachua County looking forward to the fast approaching summer, you may be wondering what home-schoolers do during this time. After all, we often brag about our flexible schedules, right? Well, summers are no different. A quick poll of home schooling parents will find just as many varieties of home schooling over the summer, as there are home schooling styles throughout the school year. Several parents in the Gainesville Area Homeschoolers group said they home-school throughout the summer. It’s “our most productive time since school year activities have stopped,” said one mom.

Home-schoolers who keep schooling during the summer see a lot of benefits, as it provides structure and consistency for children who need it.

Juli Stewart, moderator of the Titus 2 homeschool newsletter, said “we have always schooled year-round. Then vacations, birthdays, illness, holidays could be no school days!” Some home-schoolers take a hybrid approach, doing some (but not all) of our usual course load during the summer. There’s no need to worry about the summer slide. We just keep going with our curricula at a slower pace. For example, our family continues to do two or three learning activities per day, but we also take time off for camps and typical summer fun outdoors. Even home-schoolers who choose to home-school year-round have to take breaks. Home-schoolers have a goal to live life with our children, not to overload them. It’s important, no matter what time of year, to give yourself and your kids a break from time to time. We all need that! for children who need it. “It’s also real life. Very few adults have the opportunity to take off the entire summer,” said homeschooler Heather C. When it comes to summer curricula, some parents stick with their usual programs. Others may take advantage of community events or allow their children extra time to explore areas of interest. Home schooling parents who do activities said they frequently include classes or camps, regular trips to the library, extra read-aloud time and field trips that coincide with family vacations. Life is a learning opportunity, and home-schoolers take advantage of that no matter the time of year. Summer is also typically a big planning time for many home schooling parents. After attending spring home school conferences, attending used curriculum

sales with other parents and selecting curricula, most home-schoolers are excited about the coming year. Summer provides a great time to plan for the next year, get organized, pack up the previous year’s materials and organize the family home school room and materials for the coming year. Remember, Florida law requires you to keep a portfolio for the past two years. Summertime for home-schoolers can be just as much fun as it is for everyone else. But that doesn’t mean it has to look like everyone else’s summer! Whether you choose to do additional science experiments, explore new interests, or just take it easy, make summer home schooling your own, enjoy your kids, snuggle up with them for some extra reading and have fun!

Math-lete’s Assemble! Buchholz High School Mu Alpha Theta Gets Ready for Nationals BY TAYLOR MCLAMB | PHOTOS PROVIDED BY BUCHHOLZ MATH TEAM

it’s fun, you learn a lot of things, which is definitely why I think our practices are so effective,” said Tadesse. Being part of the Buchholz team is not an easy feat. When it comes to a competition like nationals, it takes countless hours of preparation and endurance, but for many of the students, an opportunity like Las Vegas means more than just winning.

“There are a lot of people on this team who’ve been working really hard this whole year and I want to see everything they’ve done pay off for them,” said Nagoshi. “I want them to feel like what they’ve did has culminated into a win.” Buchholz High School’s math team is notoriously competitive, having won its 13th state championship in the last 15 years. While their meticulous work ethic is definitely a large factor, the teams supportive, close-knit environment is the real secret behind their success. The addition of rigorous work ethic, determination and relentless strive to succeed, make the success of the Buchholz High School Math Team an easy equation to solve. After two close losses in the last two years, the 56-student math team returned to the Mu Alpha Theta state competition with a vengeance, consequently winning by a margin of 278 points over their close competitor, American Heritage School. Will Frazer, who founded the team in 1998 and continues to coach, said the win was a shock beyond their wildest dreams.

state competition is going to give us a good boost of energy, so we’re expecting good things to happen.”

While the team reined champion in all three divisions of the state competition, which include Algebra 2/ Geometry, PreCalculus and Calculus, as well as earning a winning sum of $3,000, it’s not quite time for the team to take a break. They need to start preparing for the national competition in Las Vegas in mid-July.

The students on the team partake in an intense math camp, where, for three to four weeks, they’ll diligently train for four hours a day, dissecting and practicing past competitions. Yared Tadesse, who is an 18-year-old senior on the Buchholz team, noted that the most important part of their practice is that they’re having fun while they’re doing it.

“We’re pumped up, we’re working hard and we expect to win,” said Frazer. “I think the momentum and the psychological edge of coming out of the

“I find that the most enriching part of these competitions isn’t actually the competition itself, it’s more the memories you make,” said Tadesse. “I think I’m going to remember the times I had with my friends more than any individual math problem, which is really the magic behind the entire team.”

Can a Healthy Diet Influence Fertility? BY JENNIFER JENSEN

Infertility has become a more common topic to speak up about since celebrities began sharing their struggles through social media. The fact of the matter is, one in eight couples will deal with infertility and have trouble conceiving according to Resolve, the National Infertility Association. The good news is, studies show that couples may increase their fertility levels by maintaining a healthy diet and weight. Two big proponents of this theory are Drs. Jorge Chavarro and Walter Willett of the Harvard School of Public Health who wrote a book called, “The Fertility Diet: Groundbreaking Research Reveals Natural Ways to Boost Ovulation and Improve Your Chances of Getting Pregnant,” which was based on their data analysis of the Nurses’ Health Study, a study of 18,000 women's health in America. In their book, Chavarro and Willett recommend strategies that could improve the chances of a woman becoming pregnant and increase ovulation. These included avoiding trans fats, using unsaturated vegetable oils, eating more vegetable protein and less animal protein and avoiding highly refined carbohydrates. The authors also recommended switching to whole milk and full-fat dairy products. There were other, more obvious, recommendations, like no smoking, limiting caffeine and alcohol and staying away from sugared sodas. They also recommended becoming physically active if you aren’t already, and the importance of getting to a healthy weight. Dr. Ashley Walsh of Gainesville OBGYN completely agreed. “Being in overall good health is important when trying to conceive,” she added. “Not smoking, drinking alcohol in moderation or not at all, and maintaining a healthy diet can contribute to success when trying to conceive.”

She recommended sticking to whole grains, fish, food that is high in omega-3 fatty acids, lots of fruits and vegetables and healthy oils and fats to maintain a healthy diet. She also suggested staying away from processed food and excess sugar and simple carbs. Women trying to become pregnant should also take a multivitamin that includes folic acid. Other supplements she recommended were vitamin D3, vitamin B12 and omega-3 fatty acids. “Refined, processed carbohydrates and sugar itself can be associated with decreased fertility,” Walsh said. “High insulin levels in the body impact normal hormone function in the ovaries and may impact egg quality.” In the "Nurses’ Health" study, women who had the highest intake of a “fertility diet” comprised of plant protein from vegetable sources, full-fat dairy foods, iron, and monounsaturated fats during the preconception period were found to have a 66% lower risk of infertility related to ovulatory disorders and a 27% lower risk of infertility due to other causes compared to women with the lowest intake of this diet. If a couple has been trying to conceive for six months with no such luck or if woman is 35 or older, Walsh said they should visit their gynecologist for a consultation. *Please remember to consult a doctor anytime you wish to make a change in your diet, and if you are experiencing concerns about your fertility.

‘Kangaroo Care’: The Importance of Skin-to-Skin Contact BY GEORGINA CHONG-YOU

When my first child was born, I read all the books, blog posts, articles and personal testimonies, while also watching every television show or documentary on parenting and babies. Overwhelming as they were, I managed to discover some really useful information, and one constant message was the importance of skin-toskin contact immediately after birth. That was definitely something I looked forward to doing. Who doesn’t love the snuggle and warmth of a new baby against your chest, so thankful for a healthy new life in the world? It came naturally to me once my son was born and the doctor laid him on my bare chest. But, my husband didn’t have that immediate experience with our new baby and I wanted him to. So those couple of days in the hospital, then the first few weeks at home, we made sure to let daddy enjoy skin-to-skin contact as well. My husband’s voice was soothing for my son and helped to calm his anxious cries, but also laying on daddy’s bare chest provided the reassurance for him that everything was okay. So, what is skin-to-skin baby contact and why is it important? It is when a baby’s naked skin is placed directly onto the mother’s naked skin/chest in an effort to soothe and encourage attachment and bonding between the baby and mother. This method was encouraged in an effort to mimic what kangaroo mothers do with their young when they hold them in a pouch attached to their bodies for safety, warmth and ease of feeding. It’s best when it happens immediately after a newborn has been delivered from their mother’s womb. Yet, it is encouraged to continue well after delivery and into the initial weeks/months of the newborn phase. Remember when I mentioned earlier that skin-to-skin contact was not only beneficial for mommies and babies, but also for dads as well? Well, there has been scientific evidence to support this claim. According to the US National Library of Medicine, just as there is a positive impact for infants when there is skin-to-skin contact with their mothers immediately after birth, the same impact is had when fathers are able to have skin-to-skin contact with baby. Baby’s response is calm and a peaceful quiet when their fathers soothe them by holding them skin-to-skin. Having a baby carries with it its own set of anxieties, so, it’s reassuring to know that just from feeling you close to their skin, your baby is able to be calmed and feel safe.

78

GIGGLEMAGAZINE.COM | JUNE/JULY 2019

The Benefits COMFORT Baby cries less because they feel safe WARMTH Baby’s temperature is regulated and they are warm INFECTION PROTECTION Skin-to-skin contact before baby is even cleaned off, allows baby to be less prone to infection because he/she has more time in contact with the beneficial bacteria transmitted from mommy during a vaginal birth. EASIER BREASTFEEDING Baby will smell mommy’s milk and turn their head directly to the breast. NEUROLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT AND GROWTH Stabilizes baby's heart rate, breathing patterns and blood oxygen levels. It also helps with sleep time, weight and crying of the baby.

The Send Off BY SELENA GARRISON

Summer is in full swing and although it may be hard to believe, in just a few short weeks, our Facebook and Instagram feeds will be full of first day of school photos. For parents whose toddler may be starting preschool for the first time in the fall, there are often a mix of emotions surrounding this new life transition. For some, it is exciting to launch their littles into this new chapter, while others have feelings of sadness or anxiety about the change. For all parents, though, it is important to have the knowledge and tools needed to prepare your toddler (and yourself) for preschool. Kim Sellers, director at the College of Central Florida Learning Lab School, and Marlana Rawl, infant/toddler program coordinator at Gainesville Country Day School, have some great tips for parents of first time attendees. First, Sellers suggests that parents bring their tot along for a tour of the new school. This allows the child to become familiar with their new school, as well as meet the teachers and other children. An additional idea that Rawl suggests in helping with these preparations at home is for parents to sit with their child and draw or paint a picture of their child’s school or classroom. “During this activity, parents can discuss with their child the various things they should expect when they start preschool and use their picture as a guide in the conversation,” Rawl explains. Over the summer, Rawl encourages parents to get their toddler on the same, or similar, schedule as their future preschool. “If possible,” Rawl says, “parents should request the daily schedule for their child’s future class and spend the summer following the schedule as best as possible.” This is a great way to prepare the child for the upcoming school year, since familiarity with the routine will lead to a smoother transition. For additional learning experiences at home, Sellers suggests using daily routines within the household and turning them into educational opportunities. For instance, when it is time to get dressed, you can help to foster independence by allowing your child to choose between two outfits and then working toward them being able to put their clothes on by themselves. When it is time to unload the dishwasher, you can teach about categorization by having your child group non-sharp utensils, cups, bowls, plates, bakeware, etc. Daily reading is also at the top of the list for routine things to do with your child.

80

GIGGLEMAGAZINE.COM | JUNE/JULY 2019

You can also turn everyday routines into games with your child to continue preparing them. For instance, when you get home from the grocery store, you can make a game of sorting items into categories such as fruits, vegetables, meats and boxed items. You can play games like “Simon Says,” to help your child build skills in learning and following directions. You can help your child with identifying patterns and colors by turning laundry sorting in to a matching game and letting them sort darks and lights or match socks and other items by size and color. If you have specific concerns for your child, Sellers suggests keeping the lines of communication open between yourself and your child’s school. Talk to the school leadership now on your child’s specific needs and things you can be doing to help your child with the transition to their new routine. “Consistency in routine is so important,” says Sellers, “and parents need to remember that it takes some little ones a bit longer to adjust than others.” “To make the transition smoother,” Rawl says, “children should get to school at a set time during the day.” She explains that it will be much harder for a child to transition when the start of their day at school constantly fluctuates. “Parents should also never sneak out during drop off,” Rawl explains. “Instead, they should have a proper goodbye that consists of hugs, kisses, waves, and a reassurance that they will see them after a specific transition throughout the day.” Lastly, remember that your child will pick up on and feed off of your emotions. “If you are anxious about your child beginning preschool, then chances are your child will be anxious, as well,” Sellers says. Presenting school as a positive and fun adventure will help with possible first day jitters and prepare your child for a successful start in their education.

Good Oral Health Starts Early! BY TRACY WRIGHT

Brushing your teeth is an everyday task and comes naturally (to most), but as parents we know how hard we struggle to make sure that our children have done their part in cleaning their teeth. It may seem like some sort of phase that our child is going through, but as you sit down and start looking at the facts, the truth can be quite daunting. Tooth decay is 20 times more common than diabetes and five times more common in children than childhood asthma. It should be an important focus of our attention when maintaining childhood health. It’s vital that we establish a pattern for children early on to ensure proper hygiene habits. “Starting to brush early in life helps children make brushing a part of their daily routine. As a matter of fact, we advise parents to wipe their infant’s gums with a soft wet cloth or gauze after feeding them and start to brush and clean as soon as the first couple of teeth erupt,” said Gayathri Raju, D.M.D., a pediatric dentist at Tioga Dental. “This way the child becomes accustomed to parents brushing their teeth and over time there is less resistance.” For infants and toddlers, Raju advises having them lie in your lap facing you, supporting their head and start brushing. With older children, brushing and flossing after breakfast and before going

BEING DILIGENT WITH

brushing & flossing WILL PAY OFF IN THE

long run

82

GIGGLEMAGAZINE.COM | JUNE/JULY 2019

to bed is ideal. Also, Raju suggests commercially available flavored toothpastes that can make brushing a fun experience. Once children get braces, the areas of the teeth and gums that are close to or under wires and brackets are more difficult to clean. When teeth aren’t cleaned carefully, food particles can get trapped in these areas. This allows dental plaque to accumulate, which increases the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. “It is imperative that children with braces maintain good oral hygiene. All the extra metal prevent access to the tooth surface— creating a challenge to brushing and flossing,” Raju said. “Being diligent with brushing and flossing will pay off in the long run because otherwise you may end up with straight teeth and cavities.” Raju also suggests that children with braces can add a fluoride mouth rinse to their routine to offer an extra layer of protection. Overall, good oral hygiene habits will contribute to a child’s overall physical and mental wellness. When we don’t brush and floss regularly, a domino effect begins to occur, Raju said. “When we don’t brush, plaque will accumulate and bacteria will continue to thrive and overwhelm your defenses tilting the balance in favor of cavities and gum disease to develop. White spots, cavities, bleeding gums, tartar buildup and bad breath are symptoms of this imbalance. The mouth is truly the mirror for your body and having healthy teeth and gums are part of your overall general health.” A diet high in sugars, inconsistent oral hygiene and the type of bacteria that thrives in the oral cavity can create the “perfect storm,” resulting in decay and the burden of fixing the damage can be stressful on your health, time and resources. Raju recommends establishing a dental home for your child with a pediatric dentist early to help parents to concentrate on the preventive aspect of dental care, thus keeping all the complex problems associated with childhood decay at bay. “Initial visits to the dentist can be informative and fun if the child’s exposure to the dental setting is not when they are in pain,” Raju said.

Stars, Stripes and Summer Fun! An Easy DIY Flag Craft Activity For You and Your Kiddo BY RENEE CASTRO

Summer is here and that means so is the Fourth of July! This patriotic flag wreath is the perfect craft to do with your little ones when it’s raining outside and they’re parading around the house that they’re bored. Whip out these materials and get ready to add some red, white and blue to your front door!

Materials Needed:

• 3 packs of 24 wooden clothespins • One pack of multi-sized wooden stars • Red, white and blue acrylic paint • Red, white and blue glitter (optional) • 4 plastic bags (like the ones from the grocery store) • Gloves • Wire wreath (We used a 16 inch one!) • Glue gun and glue sticks

Here’s how to make it!

1. Assemble the wooden clothespins on the wire wreath. As you put the clothespins on the wreath, arrange them so that two are on clipped on the first two wires and two are clipped on the bottom two wires.

2. Once your wreath is completely filled with the clothespins,

on the upper left side of the circle count out 21 clothespins and label them as blue. Then, in groups of four clothespins, label each group alternating red and white. (Start with red.)

3. Once you have labeled all of the clothespins, take them off of the wreath and set them apart in the plastic bags. (One bag will hold all of the red clothespins, etc.)

4. Put on your gloves. Then, in its appropriate bag, drop about

half of the bottle of acrylic paint into the bag. Close the bag up and shake it, so that the paint coats all sides of the clothespin. Take each clothespin and lay it out to dry. As it begins to dry, generously sprinkle the pertaining glitter on the paint. Wait for it to dry.

Giggle Tip: You can make this wreath without glitter for less of a mess. It will still make any door pop!

84

GIGGLEMAGAZINE.COM | JUNE/JULY 2019

5. Repeat step 4 with the wooden stars. The amount of stars and sizes of each are up to you and your little ones!

6. Once the paint and glitter have dried, arrange them on the

wreath as you did the first time. (It should now begin to resemble the American flag)

7. Using the hot glue gun, glue your stars onto the blue wooden clothespins, in whatever order you and your tot prefer!

8. Let dry completely, and hang it on your door for a complete patriotic look!

*Please be careful when using the glue gun around your little one. The gun can get very hot!

HAPPY

Fourth OF July!

The Truth About Dad's Best Friend, His Daughter BY CAROLINE STROGIS

The relationship between fathers and daughters can often be hidden in the shadows of the “father-son relationship” and “like-mother-like-daughter” references. However, the influence of a father on their daughter can have a major and life-lasting impact on girls, especially throughout their teenage years. Improved academic performance, greater amounts of self-confidence and successful relationships are just some of the qualities that are measurably greater within females who have had strong relationships with their father. A father’s involvement in his daughter’s life starts to change throughout the years. One day, it’s coaching her soccer team and watching piano recitals, and then suddenly puberty hits- and can take a hit on the relationship. Even the best of fathers may unintentionally start to turn away during this awkward stage of life, but according to Psychology Today, this may be the time when girls need their father the most. Girls with actively engaged fathers tend to be more successful academically, according to the Institute for Family Studies. A dad’s interest in their daughter’s schoolwork demonstrates the importance of education. According to Girls Inc., girls with strong relationships with their fathers are more likely to go to college and create successful careers. Loving fathers can also greatly impact the future confidence and self-esteem of their teenage daughters. The support and praise of a father gives a daughter the ability to go forward in life with confidence. This applies to many areas of young adulthood, including body image and romantic relationships. As girls go through puberty, the majority will most likely go through a phase of feeling uncomfortable in their bodies. For most, this is a normal part of growing up, but for others it can escalate into social anxiety or eating disorders. Fathers can play an important role in this, by realizing that what they say impacts their teenage daughter more than they realize. Fathers who speak highly of other women and of their daughter and her abilities, create an environment where young girls are more likely to base self-worth off factors unrelated to their bodies and carry themselves with confidence.

GIGGLEMAGAZINE.COM | JUNE/JULY 2019

Teenage years are also when girls start to become more interested in romantic relationships. According to Psychology Today, a girl’s early relationship with her father shapes her conscious and unconscious perceptions of an acceptable romantic partner. It is not uncommon for girls to pick partners with similar attributes to their fathers from appearance to personality traits. Although it may be hard, as differences between dads and daughters become more apparent, the support and influence of a father is critical during these adolescent years. According to Georgia Spinner, a 21-year-old student at Santa Fe College, maintaining a relationship with her father throughout her teenage years made them even closer in the end. “I came to appreciate my dad more and spent more time talking and hanging out with him,” said Spinner, “we became closer the older I got.” Georgia’s father, Bill Spinner, raised three daughters through their teenage years. According to Bill, he knew these difficult teenage years were a natural progression, and they came out stronger in the end. So, encourage your teen to hug her dad a little tighter and encourage a healthy relationship between the two! After all, Father’s Day is right around the corner!
