Cars in driver-assist mode hit a third of cyclists, all oncoming cars in tests
According to a recent study conducted by the American Automobile Association (AAA), cars equipped with driver-assist technology may not be as safe as initially thought. The study involved testing three popular models of cars – a Hyundai Santa Fe, a Subaru Forester, and a Tesla Model 3 – and found a significant risk of collisions with both cyclists and oncoming cars.
In the tests, the cars were equipped with their respective driver-assist technologies, including lane-keeping assistance, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. The cars were then put through a series of scenarios, including driving on suburban and urban roads, as well as rural highways.
The results of the tests were alarming. In scenarios involving a cyclist, the cars hit the cyclist in 33% of cases, while in scenarios involving oncoming cars, the cars collided with the oncoming car in every test. The study found that the driver-assist technology failed to prevent these collisions in most cases.
