INDIANAPOLIS — An arrest has been made after a deadly shooting in downtown Indianapolis over the weekend.
A 29-year-old suspect is behind bars accused of murder. Tyler Newby is being held without bond in Marion County.
At the same time, the victim’s brother is trying to make sense of the violence.
During a chaotic few hours early Sunday morning, IMPD officers were called to the intersection of Pennsylvania and Market and found 18-year-old Dorian Murrell shot one time.
Murrell died after being rushed to the hospital, devastating his younger brother.
“We’re going through a lot because he was like the glue that held us together,” said Murrell’s brother, Armon Mathis.
Mathis describes his older brother as a loyal friend who just turned 18 in March and had his whole life ahead of him.
“He had a big heart. He cared about everybody. If he said he had you, he had you for real,” said Mathis.
Mathis says his family is relieved to know that Newby is behind bars accused of the killing.
According to court records, Newby claimed he was pushed the ground and saw Murrell standing over him so he shot Murrell one time.
Newby then turned himself into police and explained what happened.
Witnesses told police Murrell did not have a weapon on him when he was killed and Newby couldn’t be sure Murrell was the one who pushed him to the ground.
In a separate shooting just a hours earlier in downtown, former Indiana University football player and local entrepreneur Chris Beaty was also shot and killed.
No one has been arrested for Beaty’s murder.
