EW.com says: For Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John), summer lovin' with Danny Zuko (John Travolta) happened so fast — but it still wasn't as speedy as her physical transition into a bona fide badass. Yet the most rewarding thing about watching Sandy go through this process in the late 1950s was getting to experience the expansive sampling of music that accompanied her different looks. The tunes used in this fun-loving musical turned out to be as timeless as the clothes she wore.

InStyle.com: With a swipe of red lipstick, a teasing comb and some skintight spandex, Sandy shook her good girl image once and for all. Thanks to a broken zipper, Newton-John had to be sewn into those red-hot vintage 50's pants.

EW.com says: Behind the scenes and socially, this Dustin Hoffman starrer was plagued by well-chronicled drama, including budget issues and script problems. But in the end, a classic, cross-dressing farce was all that stood, and you don't need much more to justify the no-doubt taxing process of turning actor Dustin Hoffman as out-of-work actor Michael Dorsey into a Dorothy Michaels. Also, all the Oscar nominations help.

InStyle.com: Transforming Hoffman into Dorothy was a process that involved a 4-lb. silicone bosom, three hours in the makeup chair, and costumes designed to conceal the actor's Adam's apple. Hoffman's performance was so convincing, it scored him an Oscar nomination and a spot on Mr. Blackwell's annual worst dressed list.

EW.com says: ''Basket case'' Allison (Ally Sheedy), one sixth of a band of teens serving a weekend detention sentence in this quintessential John Hughes flick, found an unlikely friend in pretty girl Claire (Molly Ringwald). First order of business for the besties? A makeover, of course! Though some later argued with the transformation (hey, some people like freaks!), it was an important bridging moment between the two girls from very different worlds.

InStyle.com: Growing up can be painful—so can growing out your bangs. But Claire takes Allison from freak to chic by pulling her hair away from her face and teaching her one totally genius lipstick trick.

EW.com says: So much of this David Bowie starrer is about submitting to fantasy—so it's totally fitting that a magic-peach-induced trance would finally allow ever-dreaming Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) a chance to get out of her mom jeans and step into something as magical as the world she'd found herself navigating.

InStyle.com: When your costar is Bowie, you've got to step up your style! ''I wore a beautiful silver ball gown, which was a refreshing change from the blue jeans I wore in almost every other scene,'' Connelly once said of the fairy tale dress her character dons in the movie's masquerade sequence.

EW.com says: The most wonderful thing about this painfully romantic rom-com—if we had to choose just one—was that Nicholas Cage's Ronny didn't need to see no-nonsense accountant Loretta (Cher) at her very best in order to fall in love with her. (Of course, if the whole, ''You're engaged to my brother'' thing doesn't put you off, a little salt-and-pepper hair probably won't either.) But when he did finally see her dolled up, all bets were off.

InStyle.com: After covering up her greys and having her unibrow plucked at the not-so-subtly-named Cinderella Beauty Shop, Loretta shops for a new dress, matching heels and red lipstick. When she reveals her new look to Ronny, he doesn't recognize her. Now that's what we call a makeover.

EW.com says: Plucky—but clueless—Beverly Hills newbie Tai (Brittany Murphy) needed all the help she could get when she first crossed paths with Cher (Alicia Silverstone). One makeover montage (and massive hair rinse) later, she was practically a carbon copy of the privileged peers she's so suddenly found herself among. Key word: practically. Though her look said chic, her inner grunge-lover still had eyes for social leper Travis (Breckin Meyer). Luckily, in the end, the surprise-beauty still got her burn-out beast.

InStyle.com: ''I am going to take that lost soul... and make her well-dressed and popular. Her life will be better because of me,'' the well-meaning Cher says of pet project Tai in this 1995 flick, dubbed the fashion movie of the year by Women's Wear Daily.

EW.com says: Proving once again she's the queen of the makeover, Sandra Bullock's Agent Hart was tough as they came. But when she had to trade her glock for a gown in order to go undercover at a pageant, they called in the big guns.

InStyle.com: Pageant consultant Victor Melling (Michael Caine) and his team of beauty professionals are charged with transforming awkward, ill-mannered undercover agent Gracie Hart (Sandra Bullock) into a passable Miss New Jersey. Once their work is done, Hart emerges as a viable contender and an absolute knockout.

EW.com says: Is there a sadder sight than a frizzy princess? Not to the (fictional) country of Genovia. So when the Queen (Julie Andrews) saw the state of her heir's hair, she put her royal team to work. They blow-dried, straightened, and plucked till they couldn't any more. The result? Anne freaking Hathaway. Lovely.

InStyle.com: Anne Hathaway got her very first movie makeover (see also Ella Enchanted, The Devil Wears Prada, One Day) playing the role of a reluctant royal heir. While she struggles with the decision to take her rightful place on the throne, Mia certainly looks the part after a take-no-prisoners transformation by Italian hairstylist Paolo (Larry Miller).

EW.com says: Toula Portokalos (Nia Vardalos) was a little rough around the edges when we were first introduced to her in this runaway smash indie pic. But her revised look set her on the path to a new, happier life. If that's not a makeover to cheer for, we don't know what is.

InStyle.com: Toula proves that it's never too late to go from ugly duckling to swan. After deciding to take control of her life, she enrolls in college, pulls off an impressive D.I.Y. makeover, and scores the leading man.

EW.com says: The teen set found a new Cinder-figure in this Hilary Duff movie, when the former Disney star played likable Sam Montgomery, who gussied up to bag herself a Chad Michael Murray. There weren't any groundbreaking changes made to get Duff into princess-for-the-night-shape, but it did prove the power of spiral curls.

InStyle.com: It's all there in the title of this modern movie retelling of the classic fairy tale. After enduring years of torment at the hands of her evil stepmother and two jealous stepsisters, Sam takes a night off from being ''Diner Girl,'' puts on a white gown and heads to a high school masquerade dance to meet her Prince Charming. And they all lived happily ever after.
